This is a gem of a book

First a disclaimer: I've been a student of Tom's for over 10 years, both as martial artist and a practitioner of Chinese medicine. (In fact, I became an acupuncturist partly as a result of having had my martial arts injuries sucessfully treated with Chinese medicine.) So, I am most definitely a biassed reviewer!

I'll focus on a small portion of the book, one which is of primary interest to martial artists: the use of herbal training formulas (Die Da formulas) to heal and prevent injuries:

However, Tom's book excells insofar as he provides very concise and accurate information about WHY and WHEN to use different Die Da formulas (based on Chinese medicine theory). Having taken many of Tom's "Kung Fu Traumatology" courses over the past ten years, I can definitively state that A Tooth From the Tiger's Mouth provides the very best, fundamental, and practical information available to the athlete and martial artist about treating sports and martial arts injuries with Chinese medicine. I remember hearing Tom talk about these formulas for the first time, making or buying them, and then trying them out on myself or on friends and training partners as we got injured during our training. The bottom line is - they work.

However, Tom's book is much more than a discussion of Die Da formulas. There are detailed chapters that describe the principles of Chinese sports medicine, injury prevention with respect to excercise, diet and health preservation, the various therapies of Chinese sports medicine, (including the management of cuts and lacerations, cupping and bleeding, acupressure, massage, and moxibustion), and the treatment of common sports injuries (over 30 are described). Moreover, the book is well-written, logical, and easy to follow. This is a gem of a book and would be welcome addition to any martial artist's book shelf. The fact that all of the therapies described in the book can be sucessfully applied to the treatment of sports-related injuries, makes it that more especially valuable.

Finally an "Eastern" book that's practical!

I had been looking everywhere for a book which is practical and yet espouses the wonderful "goodies" of Chinese medicine, and this is it! I was surfing through Amazon and found this book, bought it, read the entire thing in a single weekend, and I am awestruck by how practical and easy to follow it is. I've already used it as a reference twice for some minor ailments/injuries I had. And now I plan on using it to learn the "internal energy" exercises that are recommended.

Absolutely GET THIS BOOK! It's as necessary for the home as is a first-aid kit and/or a fire extinguisher. Amazing, and that's coming from someone who didn't know squat about Chinese medicine before reading this.

A Practical work that is Past Due

This book discusses injury management and rehabilitation in direct simple language. It's content is profound and yet is without artifice. Simply put, it is practical, easy to access, and serves not only the needs of martial artists, but other athletes as well. It's the kind of book I always wanted to see offered, but never was able to find. Anyone interested in managing injuries (including their own)should read this book!
Addendum: Since my original review, I have been in practice in acupuncture and Chinese medicine for two years, and this book has not lost one bit of its value. For example, I have used the rib fracture formula on several patients who came back to me raving about how much better they felt. This book has useful and easy to follow instruction. Don't miss it!

Coping With Challenge, Having a Gaggle of Good Friends

I bought this book for a friend who has been stricken with Guillain-Barre and read it myself first. I do not know how much knowledge and treatment about GB has changed since this book was written in 1986 and has been updated in 2004, but that is not the edition I read. The chapters alternate being written by Joseph Heller and his friend Speed Vogel who went through it all with Heller, along with the camaraderie of a host of friends that the two of them have fostered through their lives. Despite the horror of Guillain-Barre, well into his recovery Heller recalls the first year of it as being one of the most memorable of his life.

No Laughing Matter

This book is good it jumps around a little to much between chapters from Joseph Heller who had GBS in the early 80's and Speed Vogel his friend that really helped take care of allot of the things Joe couldn't take care of. It gives both meets perspectives. There was allot of good information obtained from the book and there was also some humor even though this is a bad situation to be in... I did benefit from reading this book. I have a friend who has GBS and I wanted to better understand how he and some others have recovered from it....

Warm, funny, scary and vivid all at the same time

NO LAUGHING MATTER is a very informative and entertaining piece of writing. Co-authored by Joseph Heller and Speed Vogel (who write alternating chapters) it details the effects of the rare debilitating affliction called Guillain-Barre syndrome. This autobiographical/biographical chronicle passes along a lot of information without once falling into obscure medical dullness.
Guillain-Barre is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, rendering the victim completely paralyzed. Although what Heller contracted was a mild form of the disorder, in an extreme case mentioned a patient was only able to move their eyes. Recovery is possible from this disease; if it's caught early enough, the patient can be hooked up to a respirator if need be and then slowly rehabilitated. NO LAUGHING MATTER is two stories. The first is that of Joseph Heller the patient who goes from being in (seemingly) perfect health to being utterly bedridden in a matter of days. The second part of the tale is told by Speed Vogel, a friend of Heller, who took care of virtually all of his financial, legal and personal obligations.
From reading some other reviews of the book, one might be under the impression that this is a light and fluffy feel-good story of friendship where one will be forced to read numerous passages on the deeper meanings of love and caring. People learning great life lessons by sacrificing much that they have purely in the name of camaraderie. Chicken soup for the soul and novocain for the brain. Fortunately, one couldn't be further from the truth. While the two authors obviously have a great fondness for each other, you won't find any obvious soliloquies on the healing power of friendship. What you will find are people who care a great deal, but aren't afraid to share a lot of good-natured abuse. While in sickness and on the road to recovery, this never feels false or sugarcoated. It's an honest account of what real friendships are made of.
Despite the title, much of the book is laugh out loud funny. Heller may have been bedridden but he didn't lose any of his trademark wit. Celebrity cameos of everyone from Dustin Hoffman to Mario Puzo to Mel Brooks help to liven up an already interesting narrative. Both authors have a warm and engaging style of writing that makes even the more incomprehensible medical jargon understandable. The jokes are great and serve also to counterpoint the feelings of desperation and of loneliness.
The book is extremely intriguing, though there are one or two sections that don't quite work. Heller was going through what appeared to be a fairly messy divorce and the legal proceedings got a little bit complicated. For a section, Heller even reproduces a few pages of the court transcripts in order to show his lawyer in the right. As justified as he may be in including these segments, they aren't nearly as interesting as the rest of the book and pale in comparison.
NO LAUGHING MATTER shows us illness from two viewpoints. From Vogel we see the outward appearance of the disease and its effect on Heller. From Heller we experience the sickness firsthand. It's a fascinating dual look at the nature of the affliction. Well worth a read.

Maybe too optimistic, but nothing helps as much as basics

I got 99th percentile on my GMAT 750(49, 42) and i used 3 books: this one, Kaplan's book with CD and Verbal Workbook. I had access to PR book and PP, but I did only tests from those. I found Kaplan's materials of quality and difficulty. Some whine that Kaplan is too hard, but that's good - if you can handle Kaplan, you can handle old good GMAT.

My favorite things about this book:

- Very short and condensed math reviews - straight to the point

- No smart-aleck advice about some stupid tricks - only math review - exactly what I needed

- Fabulous problems that illustrate a lot of traps and multiple ways of solving them

- Starts with the basics - arithmetic, integers, primes, etc - the stuff that anybody can uses a review of. A lot of applicants underestimate how much they forgot the basics and skim/skip them. I would not do that, and that book does not either.

- Finally, the number of questions and quizzes in this book is impressive. I am giving a short summary of some of the sections of the book and number of quizzes and test questions. Quiz questions are math only; Test questions are GMAT-type questions.

- I went through this book at least 3 times (helping others) and I found that solutions don't include some of the most genius ways to handle the problems. I think the authors of the questions went beyond themselves.

- No probability or combinations review, which would be very helpful. Get something. I bombed my probability question on the GMAT.

Excellent but incomplete

Kaplan's Math Workbook clearly explains most of the math skills tested by the GRE and includes a large number of practice exercises in all areas and at all difficulty levels. What's more, it guides you incrementally from the easy to the hard, so even the math-phobic will find it approachable. It's main flaw --inexplicable, inexcusable and potentially dire--is it's lack of probability and coordinate geometry review. Both of these concepts will be on your GRE exam and if you don't review them from another source source, you will be underprepared. Overall, though, it's an excellent book.

This workbook rocks!

With no review and almost 20 years since I last looked at algebra and geometry I got 360 on the GRE math section. With 4 weeks of review using this book I got 570! Imagine what you could do with longer! I highly recommend this workbook. Its easy to follow, the methods are very clear and detailed. It teaches you a few tricks of the trade that are simple and effective. Well worth the money.

In his introduction to Everything's Eventual, horror author extraordinaire Stephen King describes how he used a deck of playing cards to select the order in which these 14 tales of the macabre would appear. Judging by the impact of these stories, from the first words of the darkly fascinating "Autopsy Room Four" to the haunting final pages of "Luckey Quarter," one can almost believe King truly is guided by forces from beyond.

His first collection of short stories since the release of Nightmares & Dreamscapes in 1993, Everything's Eventual represents King at his most undiluted. The short story format showcases King's ability to spook readers using the most mundane settings (a yard sale) and comfortable memories (a boyhood fishing excursion). The dark tales collected here are some of King's finest, including an O. Henry Prize winner and "Riding the Bullet," published originally as an e-book and at one time expected by some to be the death knell of the physical publishing world. True to form, each of these stories draws the reader into King's slightly off-center world from the first page, developing characters and atmosphere more fully in the span of 50 pages than many authors can in a full novel.

For most rabid King fans, chief among the tales in this volume will be "The Little Sisters of Eluria," a novella that first appeared in the fantasy collection Legends, set in King's ever-expanding Dark Tower universe. In this story, set prior to the first Dark Tower volume, the reader finds Gunslinger Roland of Gilead wounded and under the care of nurses with very dubious intentions. Also included in this collection are "That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French," the story of a woman's personal hell; "1408," in which a writer of haunted tour guides finally encounters the real thing; "Everything's Eventual," the title story, about a boy with a dream job that turns out to be more of a nightmare; and "L.T.'s Theory of Pets," a story of divorce with a bloody surprise ending.

King also includes an introductory essay on the lost art of short fiction and brief explanatory notes that give the reader background on his intentions and inspirations for each story. As with any occasion when King directly addresses his dear Constant Readers, his tone is that of a camp counselor who's almost apologetic for the scare his fireside tales are about to throw into his charges, yet unwilling to soften the blow. Eyebrows arched in literary circles when, in 1995, the New Yorker published Stephen King's "The Man in the Black Suit," a scorchingly atmospheric tale of a boy's encounter with the Devil in backwoods Maine. The story went on to win the 1996 O. Henry Award for Best Short Story, confirming what King fans have known for years that the author is not only immensely popular but immensely talented, a modern-day counterpart to Twain, Hawthorne, Dickens. "The Man in the Black Suit" appears in this hefty collection, King's first since Nightmares and Dreamscapes (1993), along with three other extraordinary New Yorker tales: "All That You Love Will Be Carried Away," an intensely moving story of a suicidal traveling salesman who collects graffiti; "The Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French," about a woman caught in a fatal loop of deja vu; and "The Death of Jack Hamilton," a gritty, witty tale of Dillinger's gang on the lam. Together, they make up what King, in one of many author asides, calls his "literary stories," which he contrasts to the "all-out screamers" though most of the stories here seem a mix of the two, with the distinction as real as a line on a map. King's talent doesn't always burn at peak, of course, and there are lesser tales here, too, but none that most writers wouldn't be proud to claim, like the slight but affecting "Luckey," about a poor cleaning woman given a "luckey" coin as a tip, or "L.T.'s Theory of Pets," which King cites as his favorite of the collection, but whose shift from humor to horror comes off as arbitrary, at least on the page (the story first appeared in audiobook form).Then there's "Riding the Bullet," the novella that put King on the cover of Time and rattled the publishing community not for its content a suspenseful encounter with the dead but for its mode of delivery, as an e-book, and "The Little Sisters of Eleuria," another resonant entry in King's self-proclaimed "magnus opus" about Roland the Gunslinger (Roland will return, King lets on, in a now-finished 900-page Dark Tower novel, Wolves of the Calla). Stephen King at his best

I was an avid Stephen King reader in high school, but I haven't really liked some of his later stuff. It seems like he gets really involved and I lose interest. I'm not trying to be insulting, it's just me, and obviously he's doing just fine without my business. But, and that's a big but, I loved this book!!! Apparently short stories from Mr King are perfect for me. I felt like I was reading a book he'd written in the seventies or eighties. Every story, except one, had me riveted to my seat. My kindle died and I just moved closer to the outlet and continued reading. 1408, the main reason I bought this book, was worth it. I'm reading, wondering when anything scary is going to happen, only to realize it's already happening and I'm terrified. Trust me, especially if you loved Stephen King like I did (Salems Lot, Carrie) then this book is for you.

Strong Collection

This book is a collection of 14 shorts stories by Stephen King. The longest story is a prequel to the Dark Tower series and will doubtless be of interest to fans of that series. In recent months, a number of people have likely bought this collection to read "1408" so they can see the story that the movie was based on. I confess that this was my motivation and it's certainly worth reading. Because it is a true short story, it doesn't involve nearly as many twists and turns as the movie, and ends more cleanly.

The title of this collection comes from what may well be the finest story of the lot. It's a quirky tale of a young man with the ability to affect other people using symbols and writing. He narrates the story himself, sounds like the village idiot, and has just about the strangest job imaginable.

L.T.'s Theory of Pets is a second standout. It's a story of marital difficulties, pet incompatibility, and the art of storytelling. It's quite good and much better than any description of the plot could ever do justice to. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll enjoy it.

Autopsy in Room 4 may be the most suspenseful story. It features a paralyzed man on an autopsy table and you don't have to be the most imaginative person in the world to see how frightening that prospect would be.

Reviewing a collection of short stories can be tricky because there are so many stories in the book and each one is its own experience. Three or four are truly outstanding, and most of the rest are still quite good and well worth reading. There were two or three that didn't grab me but the beauty of a short story is that you don't invest that much time so the weaker stories don't take much out of your enjoyment of the book. I'd recommend thins book to all fans of King or the short story format.

Good collection of short stories

Stephen King, one of the best pure storytellers of the past couple of decades, is not one to be restricted by a particular story length: he'll write short stories, novellas, short novels (such as the Different Seasons collection), long novels and epic series (the Dark Tower). Thus, he can appeal to the reader with almost any amount of time and can deliver.
Everything's Eventual, a collection of stories that King wrote in the 1990s, is designed for the reader who wants a good single-sitting work. King is an author who has had his quality peaks and valleys, but fortunately, these stories were written while he was at one of his peaks. As a result, most of these stories are good and a few are downright great.
Although King states the stories were chosen in random order, I noticed the weakest stories seemed to appear earliest. The very first story, "Autopsy Room 4," is not bad but is probably the weakest in the bunch; it is essentially a reworking of an old Alfred Hitchcock TV story and though given the King touch, is not very original. The next three stories, "The Man in the Black Suit," "All That You Love Will Be Carried Away" and "Thee Death of Jack Hamilton," are a bit better, but still not outstanding.
After that, the stories begin to get really good. I particularly enjoyed "The Road Virus Heads North," a take-off on the haunted picture story and "1408" where King explores another haunted hotel, this one with a single bad room unlike anything found in The Shining.
For King fans, this is a must read, but I would also recommend it to other readers, in particular those who enjoy short stories, which are a form of writing that is sadly on the wane. King shows that there is still a lot of good material left in short fiction.

a rich understanding of childhood trauma for therapists

Roth and Batson clearly explicate the complicated inner realities of trauma survivors, and they provide rich and helpful insight into working with them in the therapeutic setting. Highly recommended for psychotherapists and for anyone wanting a more clinical understanding of what actually happens to the human mind when one undergoes and adapts to severe sexual abuse. This is a book for treatment providers, not really the survivors themselves, unless they have a psychologically oriented mind.

Practice doesn't make perfect

What people might write in a book about "treatment" and how they actually treat people can be two very different things. The lies we were told, and were told about us, as children can be easily translated into lies that a therapist may tell us, or tell about us.
Anything that comes from "therapy" via certain "professionals" who are in business, after all, to make money from other people's suffering, needs to be looked at with a very cautious eye. I highly recommend the Incest Survivors books by Ellen Bass and others who lived through it. Her books saved my life.

Cute, but that's about it

We all know that there is a plethora of items out there with ridiculous warning labels on them. Everything from the hair dryer that warns you not to use it while in the shower to the contraceptive jelly that warns against ingestion. This is the litigious nature of our society. Some of the warnings in this book are truly funny, a few will get a chuckle out of you, but most are just kind of blah. More fun is to go out and find the ludicrous warnings yourself and then try to imagine the person/people to whom these warnings are directed. It will likely make you wonder how the human race has survived this long and just how much longer we can make it.

Not as good as i thought would be

I brought this book for my reading while on the "porcelain throne" collection. I thought this book would be hilarious. In all actuality its kind of corny. It has 1 warning per page and just overall was a waste of my money. I mean some of them are funny. But out of 101, i skimmed through it in one sitting, laughing at probably 5 at most. I guess i expected too much from this book when i ordered it

Get it from the library, if you must get it..

I borrowed this book from the library expecting a lot more. Too much more, maybe. It reads like one of those meditation-a-day style books with a meditation (dumb label) on each page and really isn't very funny. Sure, there were a few good cracks on really dumb labels, but for the mostpart I felt that the authors were far reaching into labels that had every right to be attached to the particular product. I found myself thinking.. "What's wrong with that?" and "I understand why they have that label there".
Who knows.. maybe I've become immune to labels in a country where everyone is suing everyone else!

BORRRRRRRRIIINNNNNGGG!!!!

Boy! Was I disappointed!! This book deserves a negative number! How many times does the word "Flyy Girl" have to appear on one page? I was so innundated with the word that it gave me a migraine! I also despise when authors pump themselves up by reffering to themselves in their own book! How tacky!!! I struggled to get through this book, and NO! it was NOT an easy read! I kept picking it up and putting it down again trying to will myself to finish this tragedy! This is coming from someone who can finish a "GOOD" book in 5 hours. Don't get me wrong, I liked Mr. Tyree's other books but my gosh, man, u coulda done better than this! What? were the publishers hounding you to hurry up and finish a book? Does anyone want my copy? This book was all over the place.A whole lot of plugging and marketing ploys. The only thing i got from it was reminiscing about the ol' days when I grew up in Philly and how much I really miss cheesesteaks and hoagies!!

I read the entire book, but at one point I was going to stop. I have read all of Omar Tyree books, but this one I will probably not read again. It could have been better. I didn't like the ending.

Mad I brought this book

I brought this book thinking that it was going to be as good as the first two but I was very very wrong. I'm sorry to say but this book boring. I had to force myself to read it. The only reason I read it was beacuse of a 6hr car ride and I had finished the other books I hade with me. I don't know what Omar was thinking with this one. He must be trying to get a movie deal, and then there is a web address[...]I think he was just trying to promote his clothing line and record label.

The body "in question" here--Barnard writes, after all, traditional British whodunits--is not Aunt Clarissa's but, as it turns out, that of the old family patriarch who died years ago. Barnard's novels may be traditional, but they are certainly not tired. His latest Police Sergeant Charlie Peace tale is a fresh take on family inheritance, at the same time exhibiting all the author's greatly appreciated traits, including charm, wit, and excellent pacing. Murder as a family affair.

After more than two decades abroad, Merlyn Docherty has returned to the bosom of his family, the Cantelos, to attend the funeral of his beloved Aunt Clarissa. However, the Cantelos are less than thrilled to see Merlyn. Some of them are even accusing him of being an impostor who wants to get his hands on Clarissa's estate. Merlyn soon suspects that the Cantelo family is hiding something from him, and he intends to find out what it is--unless, of course, someone kills him first.

Robert Barnard's "The Graveyard Position" is a talky and occasionally amusing psychological mystery about a dysfunctional and mean-spirited family. Grandfather Cantelo, the patriarch, was a vicious and self-centered man who brought up his large brood to compete with one another. As a result, the Cantelo family is comprised of bitter and suspicious misfits rather than loving and cooperative relatives. When Merlyn gets to know the Cantelos, he finds them to be a repellant bunch. However, he needs to stick around long enough to prove that he is indeed Merlyn and to claim his rightful inheritance.

Most of this book consists of long-winded conversations between Merlyn and his family, the police, and people who knew the Cantelos over the years. In addition, Merlyn reminisces about his troubled childhood, and he does his own research into the Cantelo family history. Ultimately, he unearths an explosive secret that his family has been taking great pains to hide for many years. All of this adds up to an intermittently engrossing, but rather tame, novel, in which the author tries to be funny and serious at the same time. Barnard's story does provide valuable insight into the stresses that can tear families apart, and there are some genuinely funny moments here and there. However, the "The Graveyard Position" lacks the suspense and the satirical bite that has made Barnard so effective in the past.

An odd little book...

When his beloved Aunt Clarissa dies, Merlyn Cantelo returns home after decades abroad to claim his inheritance. He's welcomed by his dysfunctional extended family with suspicion and acrimony, which is par for the course, really, for this family: historically the Cantelos have only united in purpose when that purpose was a malevolent one. Merlyn sets to digging up old scandals and consequently makes himself a target, which is something his prescient Aunt had in fact long worried about, the reason for his being sent abroad in the first place. The Graveyard Position is an odd little book with a number of problems. The conversations are implausible, and assumptions are jumped to without good reason--even if they do prove to be true. The degree to which the police get involved in Merlyn's predicament--even before a crime is committed--is surprising. A manuscript is discovered that could shed light on much of the Cantelo family's history, but that thread peters out after a while. What's so odd about the book, though, is its general tone. Although published just a handful of years ago, it reads like something from Agatha Christie's era. Only a few modern references suggest that it wasn't. Readable enough, but the more you think about it the more small problems you're likely to spot.

more a bittersweet family drama than an amateur sleuth tale

Attorney Merlyn Docherty returns to England after twenty years living in Brussels for the funeral of his Aunt Clarissa Cantelo, a noted spiritualist. He is also the heir to the Cantelo empire, which angers his extended family; many of whom feel he is an imposter as the real Merlyn has been assumed dead for years.

Rather than sit back while his relatives pick apart his bones like vultures and believing that a dark secret is being concealed from him, Merlyn investigates the Cantelo clan. He especially wants to learn what is being hid and to ascertain the complex coalitions so as to determine who might prove a trustworthy ally. As Merlyn begins to put together the puzzle, one of his loving relatives tries to kill him, upping the ante.

THE GRAVEYARD POSITION is more a bittersweet family drama than an amateur sleuth tale. Merlyn is the only sympathetic character as his clan is used as hyperbole as the family from hell, making the case of nurturing can be hazardous to one's well being. The support cast is so ugly especially towards Merlyn but also somewhat with one another that each illicit scorn from the reader. Thus the dialogues, which are the key device of the plot, are amusing but also overdone, losing somewhat Robert Bernard's sharp wit. Though no BONES IN THE ATTIC, fans will cherish his latest family skeletons in the closet mystery.
