A Heart, a Cross, and a Flag: America Today (A Wall Street Journal Book), by Peggy Noonan

On the morning of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan sat down to write -- and produced at least one essay every week through September 11, 2002. The candid and sometimes heart-wrenching pieces collected here are full of insights and observations on how the events influenced our perceptions of what it means to be a New Yorker, an American, a patriot. By training our gaze on everyone from firemen, the President, and Catholic and Muslim mourners to news anchors, bus drivers, and school kids, these essays depict America in all its beauty, diversity, and strength. With a sharp but compassionate eye, Noonan balances the immediacy of the tragedy with its broader meaning for our world.
At once outraged and tender, street smart and down-home wise, A Heart, a Cross, and a Flag is a first draft of history and an apt tribute to everything we lost and learned.

From Publishers Weekly
Noonan is the kind of whimsical romantic who likes to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at five in the morning simply because "it is fun." Her take on life and world events is refreshingly different from the usual political commentary. She writes as if she were conversing with her readers; unpretentious and warm, she lays out her soul for the world to see. The former Reagan speechwriter offers a collection of her weekly columns from the Wall Street Journal spanning the year from September 11, 2001, to September 11, 2002. Many of the essays address the tragedy that changed our world. Sometimes Noonan plays the role of the daunting pessimist, warning we are not safe; "we are all soldiers now." And yet, she tells us, life is wonderful, we are lucky. She shares her passion for the small and grand details that make life worth living: her "darling subway," watching Kevin Costner eat Raisa Gorbachev's dessert, meeting the pope. Beware: Noonan (When Character Was King) does not hide her political conservatism. At times her warm persona takes on a rough urgency. Many of her opinions on such sensitive issues as profiling men of Middle Eastern descent and the invasion of Iraq may rankle some readers. But Noonan's book stands out because it is more than an exercise in right-wing political discourse. It's a testimony: a record of history as it was actually lived by real people. It is a celebration of America, a reminder that life is meant to be embraced.

From Booklist
To say the year between September 11, 2001, and September 11, 2002, was one of tremendous upheaval is a massive understatement. Noonan, a former Reagan assistant, has collected the columns she wrote during that period of time. From the column she wrote just two days after 9/11, full of shock and raw emotion, to the reserved but determined piece she wrote on the one-year anniversary, Noonan's essays are thoughtful, introspective, and deeply patriotic. Although she is devastated by the horror of 9/11, her spirits are lifted by the heroism and kindness she sees in her fellow New Yorkers, from the firemen who bravely raced into the doomed towers to the people who turned out to cheer on the rescue workers and firemen who toiled in the wreckage. She sees Bush as a president who has risen to meet the challenge he and the country face; he is not unlike Harry Truman, she states in "The President Within," an unlikely leader who is steering a course with determination and resolve. Most of the essays address the effects of 9/11 on the world, but she also tackles a few other timely topics, such as the Enron scandal, the sex-abuse charges against the Catholic Church, and even movie stars. Noonan's columns are often extremely optimistic--she sees the best in the people and the leaders of the U.S., which makes this an inspiring collection. Kristine Huntley

The Way It Really Is Out There
By H. F. Miglino
This book was given to me by a very good friend of mine, MaryAnn. On 9/11/01 we sat next to each other in work in New Jersey. We watched and listened in horror as the events of 9/11/01 unfolded and realized from that moment on the world as we know it will never be the same. The following year, we actually picked that specific day to fly on a business trip, 9/11/02, to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to show the terrorists we are not afraid of them. Ms. Noonan actually discusses how people are afraid to fly today in the last chapter. For some people this book will not be politically correct, so be aware of this. Ms. Noonan can not heap enough praise on the firefighters who responded on 9/11 (MaryAnn's brother was one of the brave firefighters who responded on 9/11, a real hero). I enjoyed and re-read over several times the chapters that referred to the 9/11 events. I agree with Ms. Noonan that we are in a war with terrorists, even though there may not be people who realize this. I enjoyed how other subjects were interwoven into the book, the Pope, how life went on after 9/11. Ms. Noonan described how she walked across the Brooklyn Bridge the morning of 9/11/02. Her descriptions and how she captures her feelings are written beautifully, each of us should have tried to capture our own moments. I know some people picking up the book may not want to read about President Bush or the Pope but the descriptions on the weather, how people continued to live their lives after 9/11 were great. If anyone feels as though their civil rights are being violated, just read Chapter 18, "Everybody's Been Shot", even if you are in a bookstore just read it. I've updated this review on 11/30 after I saw on TV people feel as though their rights are violated when they are searched boarding a plane, wake up people remember 9/11 and days afterwards, the shoe bomber, Everyone's been shot, read this section. If nothing else read the poems on pages 23 and 24 (they were tagged for me, thank you) and the poem on page 79, Two Thousand One, Nine Eleven (read these several times). Ms. Noonan describes Brooklyn Heights and beauty (I went to St. Francis College in the Heights). The past two years MaryAnn, other co-workers and myself have gone to Brooklyn Heights to view the Blue Light tribute to 9/11/01. Everyone should see this from Brooklyn Heights and everyone should read this book. Thanks for writing the book Ms. Noonan. This is an awesome gift.

An inspiring tome during a fateful year
By R. J. Riggs
Peggy Noonan's columns that appeared in the pages of the Wall Street Journal during the year that followed the attacks on September 11th were not only some of the best writing of her career, but served as a source of weekly comfort during those early months.
Her first piece, "What I Saw At The Devastation" still stands out as the finest account of what it felt like to be there. The descriptions are vivid, the feelings are real, and as the weeks continued, as we routed the Taliban out of Afghanistan, as we came together as a nation, only to see divisiveness pull us apart, Peggy's words captured the moments.
The oddity that became an FBI invesigation, the declarations by the left wing media declaring our failure in Afghanistan as smoke still rose from lower Manhattan, and perhaps the most poignant tale, of a subway ride to the World Series a month after the attacks. . .
Peggy's columns were wonderfully written, and this collection captures it perfectly.

Catharsis in print
By Piety Hill Booksellers
Having been a Peggy Noonan fan for some time, I was excited to read her collection of essays in the aftermath of 9/11. I was not dissapointed in the least.

Ms. Noonan offers readers her particularly personal and charming perspective on everything from firefighter admiration, to anger, to faith, to the politics of terrorism. In doing so she reminds us why she should be considered among the best essayists of our generation.

In the interest of fairness, there were times when I wished the book was more cohesive. The lack of cohesion is a natural consequence of these writings being stand-alone essays. Still, at times this distracted from her otherwise brilliant writing.

When A Heart, a Cross, and a Flag shines (as it so often does), it is a therpautic and prosaic look at our country's most challenging moment. An excellent choice for like-minded conservatives as well as reasonable patriots of the left.

Our Mothers' War: American Women at Home and at the Front During World War II, by Emily Yellin

"Our women are serving actively in many ways in this war, and they are doing a grand job on both the fighting front and the home front."

-- Eleanor Roosevelt, 1944

Our Mothers' War is a stunning and unprecedented portrait of women during World War II, a war that forever transformed the way women participate in American society.

Never before has the vast range of American women's experience during this pivotal era been brought together in one book. Now, Our Mothers' War re-creates what American women from all walks of life were doing and thinking, on the home front and abroad.

Like all great histories, Our Mothers' War began with an illuminating discovery. After finding a journal and letters her mother had written while serving with the Red Cross in the Pacific, journalist Emily Yellin started unearthing what her mother and other women of her mother's generation went through during a time when their country asked them to step into roles they had never been invited, or allowed, to fill before.

Drawing on a wide range of sources, including personal interviews and previously unpublished letters and diaries, Yellin shows what went on in the hearts and minds of the real women behind the female images of World War II -- women working in war plants; mothers and wives sending their husbands and sons off to war and sometimes death; women joining the military for the first time in American history; nurses operating in battle zones in Europe, Africa, and the Pacific; and housewives coping with rationing.

Yellin also delves into lesser-known stories, including: tales of female spies, pilots, movie stars, baseball players, politicians, prostitutes, journalists, and even fictional characters; firsthand accounts from the wives of the scientists who created the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, African-American women who faced Jim Crow segregation laws at home even as their men were fighting enemy bigotry and injustice abroad, and Japanese-American women locked up as prisoners in their own country. Yellin explains how Wonder Woman was created in 1941 to fight the Nazi menace and became the first female comic book superhero, as well as how Marilyn Monroe was discovered in 1944 while working with her mother-in-law packing parachutes at a war plant in Burbank, California.

Our Mothers' War gives center stage to those who might be called "the other American soldiers."

From Publishers Weekly
After years of planting Victory gardens, volunteering at USOs and coping with increased home front responsibilities, in early 1945 Yellin's mother quit her desk job at Reader's Digest and shipped out to the Pacific Front to join the Red Cross. Wartime manpower shortages were bending gender rules, and many women seized the opportunity to try something different. While feminist historians have analyzed the meaning of their war experience, ?ournalist Yellin takes a more subjective approach. This nonjudgmental, anecdotal account covers the usual range of topics—women in war industries, in volunteer work, in the armed forces, in undercover operations—but Yellin avoids retelling the familiar. Thus, she discusses the experiences of Lena Horne and Julia Child more fully than those of Eleanor Roosevelt, and delves deeper into the anti-Semitic Mothers' Movement and Hawaiian prostitutes walking picket lines than more mainstream organizations like the CIO women's committees. Yellin describes the exclusion of African-American women from most military units and the internment of Japanese-American women, but adds little to present scholarship on minority women's participation. Indeed, since her most original material comes from interviews with relatives, family friends and contacts, the book is strongest on the experiences of educated white women, which were surprisingly diverse. For WAVES director Mildred McAfee—the president of Wellesley College before the war—life in the navy took her out of her "cloister" and thrust her into a world where "women are women and men are men." For others, like Yellin's mother, the war let their genies out of the bottle.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–An exceptionally well-written, exhaustively researched book. During World War II, females were confined to auxiliary roles. Yellin reveals all of the responsibilities held by women, including helping to manufacture aircraft, ships, and other munitions; and, in the process, outproducing all of America's allies and enemies, by far. Readers see war brides who worked hard to maintain the morale of their husbands while surviving long separation, fear, and shortages of virtually everything necessary to support a family. Yellin writes about performers like Betty Grable, who traveled to combat theaters to raise the spirits of soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Our Mothers' War is an important book because the role played by women in World War II has been regularly ignored.–Alan Gropman, National Defense University, Washington, DC

From Booklist
Yellin, motivated by the discovery of a journal her mother kept while serving in the Red Cross in Saipan during World War II, began researching the experiences of a wide cross section of women during the war years. Women from a variety of social, financial, religious, and cultural backgrounds answered the call to serve their families and their country in heretofore unthinkable ways. Proving themselves to be equal partners in the fellowship of the "greatest generation," these wives, daughters, mothers, sisters, and friends forged new identities for themselves while breaking down significant gender barriers for subsequent generations of women. Drawn from letters, diaries, and interviews, these first-person accounts and^B reminiscences are woven together and placed into historical context by Yellin's unobtrusive narrative. Allowing her subjects' eloquent voices to speak for themselves, she provides a fascinating slice of social history. Margaret Flanagan

They deserve more credit than they have gotten.

A great read!
This book is full of surprising, well-told stories of heroic, courageous, and fascinating women. Not just another history of the "supporting roles" of women during the war. This book goes far beyond the stock portrayals of WWII women to take you into their private thoughts and fears. There are pilots, war photographers, disc jockeys, spies, soldiers, members of congress -- so many women who stepped up and took part in the war, often in spite of great opposition. (And it doesn't shy away from telling about a few women who were not so noble during the war either.)
I had never seen the women of WWII placed in this light -- as equal partners in fighting and winning. This book will make you want to know more about your own mother, your aunts, and your grandmothers. (Hopefully you still have a chance to discuss this book with them!) It should be read by every son, daughter, grandson and granddaughter of the Greatest Generation.

Astonishing
By R. Williams
This is a unique compilation of astonishing research and
personal history that takes the crust off our mothers' wartime persona. Even the high profile women of WWII ? Dietrich, Lombard,
Davis, et al ? are illuminated in thoroughly surprising ways. I read slowly and savored each page, and by the end I knew my mother and grandmothers and the human spirit, better. Kudos to Emily Yellin.

Excellent Resource
By Dewey
The voice of women veterans is one too seldom heard. Now, with WWII veterans dying at a rate of over 1,000 per day, those voices will all too soon become silent. WWII was the first time women joined the military, and they encountered prejudice and hardships every step of the way. The women and nurses who served in the military witnessed horrors that many of the men encountered, but with much less preparation and little resource for healing after the war. All but forgotten for the roles they performed, this book brings to light their stories by both the women themselves, as well as the author's research and study. Much of the information is rarely found in available books, and "Our Mothers War" is an excellent resource for that information- particularly on the lesser known women's roles on the homefront, in espionage, and those who were taken as prisoners of war. Women volunteered to help the war effort in every possible way. The accounts tell stories of war as well as stories of the lighter side of day-to-day living that was the human side of life during WWII.

An excellent overall account of women in the 1940's, and one that will likely encourage the reader to delve deeper into our nation's history of female veterans, women's roles and the women's movement.

Introduction

A baby's most natural state is bliss. Open, curious, and content, babies are designed to give and receive love. However, sometimes a baby's true state falls a little off kilter and needs help to rebalance. Since babies do not come with instruction manuals, I teach parents and caregivers simple yoga-based movements and techniques to help free babies from suffering from digestion troubles and liberate their restlessness into peaceful sleep and happiness. You, as the caregiver, don't need any yoga experience to calm your baby and help him or her grow strong. All you need to do is breathe, love, and move!

What Is Yoga?

The word yoga has acquired many translations over the centuries. According to The Heart of Yoga, by T. K. V. Desikachar, meanings of the word include "to unite," "to come together," "to tie the strands of the mind together," and "acting in such a way that all of our attention is directed toward the activity in which we are currently engaged." Yoga gives us insight. The practice of yoga with a baby can help parents and caregivers bond with the baby more deeply, and understand how best to care for them. When parents come to my yoga studio, they are not distracted by the outside world. Yoga can bring moms and dads closer to understanding and supporting their child's intentions, needs, and desires. Through yoga, babies sense their parents' trust and deep commitment to understanding and responsiveness as they move forward in developing their physical, social, intellectual, and emotional skills in the way that is aligned with each child's highest destiny.

What Is Itsy Bitsy Yoga®?

Itsy Bitsy Yoga is a unique blend of yoga postures, infant developmental movement, and parent/child bonding. In this book, you will find nearly seventy easy-to-learn and practical poses and techniques that benefit your child from birth to twenty-four months old. I have intertwined the cross-cultural jewels from the wisdom of an infant's moving body, yoga, and the latest research in the field of infant development to deliver a developmentally nutritious movement program for a parent and baby to enjoy together.

In teaching yoga to facilitators and thousands of babies, toddlers, and parents, I have seen firsthand the benefits of yoga for babies: better sleep, improved digestion, relief from gas pains and mild colic, a stronger immune system, and an increase in body awareness and self-confidence.

The Birth of Itsy Bitsy Yoga

As a certified yoga teacher and infant developmental movement educator, I examine Hatha Yoga postures with the intention of adapting them for the nonverbal baby to do with or without a parent's help. The culmination of my professional background, twenty years of yoga and meditation practice, and a lifetime of study and experience in caring for babies and toddlers, is evident in Itsy Bitsy Yoga. Itsy Bitsy Yoga teaches parents how to support their baby's physical development and movement as nature intended. As much as possible I will tell you the role yoga plays in your child's development so that the experience and rewards are richer for you.

Not everything in this book is yoga in a traditional sense. I also translate the movements of an infant's natural developmental progression into playful practices. Many of my students are especially impressed that my poses and techniques are able to calm their babies so well.

I will show you how certain positions play a necessary role in your baby's physical development. I'll help you support your baby's physical development and the natural flow of unfolding gross motor skills. Lack of awareness in positioning, holding, or moving an infant can result in future lower back problems, reading difficulties, and challenges in focus.

The History of Baby Yoga

It is my belief that over thousands of years ago when yoga was first developing, yoga masters studied the movements of babies to create postures, or asanas. Through the practice of yoga, adults are returning to the unrestricted innocence and bliss of infancy. In a sense, yoga for babies has always existed. It is part of what babies do naturally. However, the natural movement babies need to experience is being reduced with the overuse of confining baby-holding devices such as infant car seats, walkers, seated activity centers, and strollers.

Yoga Is Natural for Babies

This photograph illustrates how an infant's development mirrors Classical Hatha Yoga postures developed more than five thousand years ago. For example, a baby coming up to a walking stance reflects the Downward Facing Dog Pose in Yoga.

Babies who are new to walking move into Downward Facing Dog repeatedly to transition from the floor into standing. Down Dog (as I like to call it in Itsy Bitsy Yoga) also occurs earlier in development when a baby is almost crawling. Throughout the book, I will explain what role Down Dog and other traditional Hatha Yoga postures play in your baby's development.

Top Five Reasons Why Babies Are Natural Yogis (yoga students)

1. Like yogis, babies prefer to breathe through the nose.

2. Like yogis, babies are only concerned with the present moment.

3. Like yogis, babies love unconditionally.

4. Like yogis, babies practice nonviolence.

5. Like yogis, babies practice yoga postures naturally as part of development.

Is It Too Early or Too Late for My Baby or Toddler to Start Yoga?

No. You're never too young or too old to start the practice of yoga. Parents and caregivers are invited to start practicing the postures in Itsy Bitsy Yoga with babies anytime between birth and twenty-four months. See Chapter 2 to get you started.

Yoga Takes as Little as Twenty Seconds and as Long as Twenty-five Minutes

The time you spend doing Itsy Bitsy Yoga is a vacation from the rest of your day. This developmentally nutritious activity also enhances your bond with your baby. A baby's or toddler's yoga practice can last twenty seconds to twenty-five minutes, depending on the baby's needs and your schedule. One of the book's nine Magic Poses (explained on page 10) can reduce fussiness almost instantaneously. In five to ten minutes you and your baby can engage in any one of the book's thirty-five Itsy Bitsy Yoga Series. Each series playfully combines three to seven postures to help you calm your baby, help your baby sleep longer, and grow stronger. Finally, you may choose to practice a number of the book's seventy yoga postures that are appropriate for your baby's current developmental stage.

No Yoga Experience Needed

No experience is necessary to share yoga and its benefits with a baby. Many people have always wanted to try yoga but thought they were too busy, until they became parents. In fact, more than half of the parents I teach had never done yoga before expecting a child. When a woman becomes pregnant she has more reason to pay attention to and care for her body in ways she might not have previously. Parents come to my classes to bond with and learn about their babies. After all, the word yoga means "to unite." When people learn how beneficial yoga is, they want to share it with their families. Also, my students have found yoga to be useful for enhancing the bond between a new baby and older siblings, grandparents, other family members, and nannies.

Molly and her fourteen-month-old son, Trevor, came to my class on a friend's referral. Molly had never tried yoga, but had known that someday she would like to. She thought it would be a good activity to share with her son, and it was! It turns out that Molly loved the time she spent practicing yoga with Trevor. Now, every time Trevor hears the words "Tree Pose," he assumes the Tree Pose in yoga! Molly has also begun practicing yoga for herself and finds that she has more energy to keep up with her growing toddler.

Great book!
By Blissful Mama
I love this book. I started using it when my baby was 4 weeks old. After trying to do "mommy baby" yoga (using Baby Om) I decided it was much easier to do yoga with my baby separately from my own practice, though there is some overlap. Realistically, you have to stop a million times usually to wipe spit up, nurse, burp, etc, and for me it worked better to have all my attention on my baby. This book gives simple exercises, and great tips to make the experience enjoyable for baby. My baby has gotten more and more used to it the more we do it, and she is very calm, relaxed and peaceful when we do it now. I also like this book because it gives new exercises based on lots of developmental steps (head holding, almost sitting, etc) instead of just yoga for a baby - we all know that a 4 week old is much different from a 4 month old! I highly recommend this and plan to use it until my baby is 2!

I really did not want to like this book
By J. Plummer
Okay, when I picked this book up, I rolled my eyes and thought, "oh brother." As if there aren't enough things for a baby to learn. But I was curious about the activities that the book would provide so I read through it anyway. I admit I was skeptical from the start. I'll tell you that this book is chock FULL of self promotion and I found that incredibly irritating. More than half of this book is just trying to convince the reader how wonderful yoga is, especially itsy bitsy yoga. Fine. I got it. Yoga is good. Itsy Bitsy Yoga is better. I do understand alot of yoga is the mind set (which is a topic beaten like a dead horse in this book), but I'm gonna tell you, I'm a mom of a toddler and a baby, and I just don't have time for the "tranquility" of yoga. I wish I did, but I don't. I have to be a pretty flexible lady. (no pun intended) I just want some activities I could personally do with my 9 month old and my 2 year old. When you get past all the cheerleading in the book, the activities are terrific. They are personal, and simple, and fun to do. And like the book states (over and over) you can spend as much time as you can afford with the "poses." The book itself is easy to follow and have some terrific tips to add along with the poses (like songs and variations, etc) They have plenty of photos, and the book is divided by major milestones instead of ages. At the end of each chapter is a quick reference of what poses work for whatever situation you are in. That is so handy. I really like this book as a reference guide. This book is meant for children from birth to 24 months, so I took a quick glance into the older tot chapters to see what they were like. When my oldest was between 1 and 2 years I don't think she would've copied what I did, nor would she have done any poses with encouragement, so I checked out how you were supposed to interact with the older set. Alot of the poses for the older kids still have parental interaction (which I think she would've liked) so I think this is a pretty realistic guide on what your child can and would want to do (since kids can be so different). There is nothing extreme (yoga-wise) in this book, and if you can't make your home have a nice tranquil atmosphere, alot of the poses can be done in a playful way. So as much as I don't like the writing in the book, I really liked the poses.

My Baby Loves It
By Yoga Nut
What a fun and enjoyable workout for baby and mommy. My daugther is 14 months old, and feels so relaxed during the mellow poses, and laughs during the "happy baby" poses. You can tailor the session to meet your needs and the time of day.

This book is well-written and organized by baby's age from birth to 24 months. The author writes with a real love and respect for babies.

Some of the poses are based on traditional yoga, and some are more like massage therapy. Most of the poses have a cute little song to go with them to keep the interest and attention of the baby.

Chapter One

Been there, done that. If you're considering applying to graduate school or business school, then you've already seen all the math you need for both the GRE and the GMAT. You would have covered the relevant math content in junior high. In fact, the math that appears on the GRE and GMAT is almost identical to the math tested on the SAT or ACT. You don't need to know trigonometry. You don't need to know calculus. No surprises -- it's all material you've seen before. The only problem is, you may not have seen it lately. When was the last time you had to add a bunch of fractions without a calculator?

No matter how much your memories of junior high algebra classes have dimmed, don't panic. The GRE and the GMAT test a limited number of core math concepts in predictable ways. Certain topics come up in every test, and, chances are, these topics will be expressed in much the same way; even some of the words and phrases appearing in the questions are predictable. Since the tests are so formulaic, we can show you the math you're bound to encounter. Some practice on testlike questions, such as those in the following chapters, will ready you for the questions you will see on the actual test.

Here is a checklist of core math concepts you'll need for the GRE and GMAT. These concepts are vital, not only because they are tested directly on every GRE and GMAT, but also because you need to know how to perform these simpler operations in order to perform more complicated tasks. For instance, you won't be able to find the volume of a cylinder if you can't find the area of a circle. We know the math operations on the following list are pretty basic, but make sure you know how to do them.

GRE and GMAT Math Basics
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. (Chapter 2)
Convert fractions to decimals, and vice versa. (Chapter 2)
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide signed numbers. (Chapter 2)
Plug numbers into algebraic expressions. (Chapter 3)
Solve a simple algebraic equation. (Chapter 3)
Find a percent using the percent formula. (Chapter 2)
Find an average. (Chapter 2)
Find the areas of rectangles, triangles, and circles. (Chapter 5)

How Math is Scored on the GMAT

The GMAT will give you a scaled quantitative score from 0 to 60. (The average score is 30.) This score reflects your performance on the math portion of the test compared to all other GMAT test takers.

You will also receive an overall score that reflects your performance on both the math and the verbal portions of the test. This is a scaled score from 200 to 800.

How Math is Scored on the GRE

The GRE will give you a scaled quantitative score from 200 to 800. (The average score is 500.) This score reflects your performance on the math portion of the GRE compared to all other GRE test takers.

Test Overview

The GRE and the GMAT are pretty similar in terms of the math they test. However, there are significant differences in the way the tests are administered. The GMAT and GRE are now available only as a Computer Adaptive Test, or CAT. You take this test on a computer at special centers. Here's a quick overview of the math sections of the GRE and GMAT CAT.

Problem Solving Questions on the GRE and GMAT
Problem Solving questions are the simplest you will see on either test. You are given a question (and sometimes an accompanying chart or diagram) and asked to choose the correct answer from a list of five answer choices.

Quantitative Comparison Questions on the GRE
Quantitative Comparisons are found only on the GRE. You are given two quantities, one in Column A, and one in Column B, and you must decide if one in particular is larger, whether they are the same size, or whether you need more information to make the comparison. There are four answer choices, which are the same for every Quantitative Comparison question. Sometimes you will be given additional information about the quantities being compared. This will be centered above the columns.

Data Sufficiency Questions on the GMAT
Data Sufficiency questions are found only on the GMAT. In Data Sufficiency, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. Your task is to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. All Data Sufficiency questions have the same five answer choices.

Math on the GMAT CAT
One Quantitative section:

There are 37 questions to be done in 75 minutes.

Approximately two-thirds of the questions will be in the Problem Solving format, and the remaining questions will be in the Data Sufficiency format.

About 10 of the questions in the GMAT CAT math section will be experimental questions. These are questions that are being tested for use in future tests, and are not scored. However, there is no way of telling the experimental questions from the scored questions around them, and so you should treat all questions as if they are scored.

Math on the GRE CAT
One Quantitative section:

There are 28 questions to be done in 45 minutes.

Approximately half of the questions will be in the Quantitative Comparison format and the remaining questions will be in the Problem Solving format. About a quarter of the Problem Solving questions will ask you to interpret a set of charts or graphs.

Math Content
The GMAT and GRE test similar skills and knowledge. As we mentioned, it's basically junior high school level math. The emphasis is slightly different between the tests, though. Most test takers find the math on the GMAT to be slightly more challenging.

Here's how the approximate number of questions break down by content area for the two tests. (By the way, this book contains chapters devoted to each of these subject areas, so you can focus on the most relevant material.)

GMAT Math by Subject Area
Arithmetic -- About half of all questions.

Algebra -- About a quarter of all questions.

Geometry -- About a sixth of all questions.

Graphs, logic questions, and other miscellaneous question types occur from time to time.

About half of all questions are presented in the form of word problems.

GRE Math by Subject Area
Arithmetic -- About a third of all questions.

Algebra -- About a sixth of all questions.

Geometry -- About a third of all questions.

Graphs -- About a sixth of all questions.

About a quarter of all questions are presented in the form of word problems.

Computer Adaptive Testing
The GMAT and GRE CATs are a little different from the paper-and-pencil tests you have probably seen in the past.

You make your way through the GMAT and GRE CATs by pointing and clicking with a mouse -- in fact, the tests are mouse-only. You won't use the keyboard in the math portions of the tests. Each test is preceded by a short tutorial that will show you exactly how to use the mouse to indicate your answer and move through the test. If you have used a computer and mouse before, you will probably find the procedure to be very simple.

How a CAT Finds Your Score
These computer-based tests "adapt" to your performance. This means the questions get harder or easier depending on whether you answer them correctly or not. Your score is not directly determined by how many questions you get right, but by how hard the questions you get right are.

When you start a section the computer:

  • Assumes you have an average score.
  • Gives you a medium-difficulty question. If you answer a question correctly:
  • Your score goes up.
  • You are given a harder question. If you answer a question incorrectly:
  • Your score goes down.
  • You are given an easier question. After a while you will reach a level where most of the questions will seem difficult to you. At this point you will get roughly as many questions right as you get wrong. This is your scoring level. The computer uses your scoring level in calculating your scaled score.

Another consequence of the test's adaptive nature is that for the bulk of the test you will be getting questions at the limit of your ability. While every question is equally important to your final score, harder questions generate higher scores and easier questions lower scores. You want to answer as many hard questions as possible. This is a reason to concentrate your energies on the early questions. Get these right and you are into the harder questions, where the points are. The sooner you start to see harder questions, the higher your final score is likely to be.

There are a few other consequences of the adaptive nature of the test that you should consider.

  • There is no preset order of difficulty; the difficulty level of the questions you're getting is dependent on how well you have done on the preceding questions. The harder the questions are, the better you are doing. So, if you seem to be getting only hard questions, don't panic: It's a good sign!
  • Once you leave a question, you cannot return to it. That's it. Kiss it good-bye. This is why you should never rush on the CAT. Make sure that you have indicated the right answer before you confirm it and move on. The CAT rewards meticulous test takers.
  • In a CAT you must answer a question to move on to the next one. There's no skipping around. If you can't get an answer, you will have to guess in order to move on. Consequently, intelligent guessing can make the difference between a mediocre and a great score. Guess intelligently and strategically -- eliminate any answer choices that you can determine are wrong and guess among those remaining. The explanations to the questions in this book will demonstrate techniques for eliminating answer choices strategically.
  • One final, important point. There is a penalty for unanswered questions on the CAT. Every question you leave unanswered will decrease your score by a greater amount than a question that you answered incorrectly! This means that you should answer all the questions on the test, even if you have to guess randomly to finish a section.

    Went from 39 (57%) to 50 (96%) for a 760 GMAT finish.
    By A Customer
My quant score killed me the first time I took the test--57 percentile. I had thought I was prepared with the general Kaplan GMAT book with CD-ROM. Wrong.
For the quant-challenged, there are two general prep strategies. One, you can dish out a couple grand for Kaplan tutoring. Personally, I recommend the following three-book approach, assuming you have time. Get the ARCO GRE-GMAT Math Review. It is basic, but trust me, if you don't know/review the basics cold, you are done. This book would also be a fine starting point for people who would score less than 57%, so don't let that put you off. The section on word problems was particularly helpful. Each topical area (such as factoring) has practice problems, and each section (such as Algebra) has a practice test to reinforce what you are reviewing (or learning).
The second book I recommend is the Kaplan GRE-GMAT Math Workbook. It will take you the next step, assuming that you know the basic math and getting more into how to manipulate certain figures and math concepts to get the answer you need. Test taking strategy is also addressed in this book, which it is not in the ARCO. There are far more practice problems in the Kaplan than in the ARCO, and they are divided into "Basic", "Intermediate" and "Advanced."
I used only these two books, and my quant score went from 57 percentile to 96 percentile. I reviewed for two weeks, one book a week, about 4 hours per day.
I called this a three-book approach; the third book is one that I wish I had bought--GMAC's current edition of previous tests. Practicing in this book would probably have increased my confidence a bit more going into the test--I must admit that I did not fully trust Kaplan's problems to be truly representative of the real GMAT. Judging from my results, this mistrust was unfounded. I did use GMAC's PowerPrep software, which you get when you register for the GMAT. A big drawback with PowerPrep is that it uses the questions from a paper test, and just levers them into the CAT format. The questions don't really get harder if you answer them correctly (as of November 8, 2002). Use them for math practice, but keep in mind that the CAT is designed to challenge you by offering you harder and harder questions as long as you keep getting them right. Don't learn a time managment strategy on the paper tests and expect to use it on the CAT. Don't expect your CAT to be as easy as the paper tests.
I also got Kaplan's GMAT 800 at a local bookstore, and returned it two days later. After the other two books, I could not see that it was helping me much at all. I don't recommend that one. Not for math anyway--I am not addressing verbal anything in this review.
One final note--none of the books address probability, which exists on the GMAT in rudimentary form. I didn't need to know permutations or combinations either time I took the test, but that's not to say that you will not--I just don't know. I did need to know basic probability calculation, and that's not in any of the books above. So, spend an hour at the library and nail that down--it's not difficult.

Great Review of GRE Math Concepts
    By A Customer
This book provides an excellent review of most of the math concepts covered on the GRE. Each chapter begins by clearly explaining a concept, and continues by offering TONS of practice exercises and tests. Using this guide and the questions from "GRE: Practicing to take the General Test" by ETS, I was able to score 780 on the GRE Math.
One warning about this book: It does not address some of the more advanced concepts that may appear on the GRE CAT when you are scoring in the 700-800 range. For example, I encountered several questions about probability and statistics, two topics that I did not find in this guide.
The great thing about this book in comparison to the Kaplan GRE Exam 2003 is that it's not just about Kaplan test-taking strategies. Instead, the author goes to great lengths to make sure you are prepared to handle the vast majority of the actual math concepts found on the GRE.

Excellent! I raised my score almost 200 points!
    By A Customer
Before I began reviewing for the GRE, I had not used many mathematical concepts since high school (almost 4 years ago). After reviewing with a General Test review book, I took a practice test and scored a 440 and almost gave up my dreams of going to grad school for clinical psychology. Fortunately, I bought the Kaplan GRE-GMAT Math Workbook.
The book consists of 5 main sections (arithmatic, algebra, word problems, and geometry) and a section that is geared toward sections specifically on the GRE or GMAT (like quatitative comparisons, data sufficiency, and graphs). Each of the main sections is divided into subsections, focusing on specific mathmatical concepts such as triangles, percentages, ratios, etc. Each subsection begins with approximately 3-5 pages of clear and useful tutorial on each of the topics. Following the tutorial section are many practice problems at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels with explainations.
I especially recommend this book if you learn the best by applying your knowledge. General books seem to give a brief explanation, but very little practice. Because this book containes many, many practice problems that are similar to the problems on the actual GRE, it is a very good form of preparation. An extra bonus is that if you are pressed for time, you can probably finish it in a weekend if you are committed. Yesterday I took the GRE and scored a 620 on Quatitative and now have a good shot at going to grad school.

    The Smoking Gun : Day

From America's foremost criminal defense lawyer and author of the bestselling How to Argue and Win Every Time comes this riveting, true account of a trial that adeptly exposes the unrelenting power of the state, which so often crushes those -- guilty or innocent -- who come before the bar of justice. It could happen to you.

When Sandy Jones and her teenage son were accused of murdering a real estate developer on their hardscrabble Oregon farm, the prosecution had an eyewitness to the shooting and a photograph of Sandy holding a smoking rifle. County officials kept Sandy in jail while they awaited the trial, despite ballistic evidence that strongly suggested she hadn't fired the fatal shot. The case erupted into an epic struggle between Sandy -- who was poor, different, and a woman -- and the "good old boys" of Lincoln County, Oregon, who held all the power.

Though the Joneses' guilt seemed eminently clear to the county and the prosecution, Gerry Spence, renowned for his work on the cases of Karen Silkwood and Randy Weaver at Ruby Ridge, took the case pro bono and the courtroom battle exploded into three years of intensely moving jury trials, recounted here from the record of the case. The Smoking Gun follows Gerry Spence through his passionate arguments with two different judges and two different prosecutorial teams, his exacting jury selection, his expert questioning of the witnesses, and his incredible rapport with the jury as he fights for the rights of Sandy and her son.

With a superb sense of drama and an intimate knowledge of the court system, Spence highlights the pitfalls that every defendant faces, making The Smoking Gun extremely relevant today, when our rights are being eroded and when the average American, even if innocent, is hard-pressed to obtain a fair trial.

Gerry Spence, the loud, large, imposing Wyoming lawyer who became a household name during the O. J. trial, lends credibility to the Sixth Amendment "right to counsel" by taking on unpopular clients and going up against the mighty machine of the state. Here, Spence recounts in chilling detail the case against a poor mother and her son, both accused of murder in Oregon. Once the state has its suspect, Spence argues, watch out, for all the stops are pulled out so as to prove that the police, the D.A.'s office, and even the judges did not make a mistake. Feeling for this family, Spence agrees to join the defense team pro bono, helping two talented court-appointed attorneys. We have the privilege of getting inside Spence's head, from the heartfelt compassion for his client to the analysis of the evidence to his clear disdain for many aspects of our legal system, especially how the accused is treated as guilty until proven innocent. A true maverick, Spence is someone you'd want on your side. Mary Frances Wilkens

Wow ! This was a page turner. I don't often stay up until the wee hours of the morning to finish a book that I can't put down.
Gerry Spence is a wonderful story teller. This makes him a superb communicator. It works on many levels...as a suspensful story, as a model for effective story telling, and as an example of effective trial lawyering. Most of all it mirrors how our criminal justice system works and doesn't work. This book is a must for someone who wants an insight into our criminal justice system.
As always, Gerry Spence addresses us at a very human level.

You Got Screwed!: Why Wall Street Tanked and How You Can Prosper, by James J. Cramer

    You've been screwed.
You've been bludgeoned, skewered, crushed, mutilated by the stock market. Every day you read about another corporate scandal: loans to CEOs that didn't have to be repaid, accounting "irregularities," profits that never existed. You think the stock market must have been rigged. And you're right.
You were betrayed by the stock promotion machine -- the mutual fund managers, the brokers, analysts, strategists, and stock gurus who brainwashed you into buying and holding and believing that stocks, like parents, always come through and bail you out in the end.
So now what do you do? Where do you put your money? You can't just leave it in the bank or stuff it under the mattress.
For fourteen years Jim Cramer ran a hedge fund that compounded money at a rate of 24 percent annually after fees, and then he got out at the end of 2000. He knows that there are ways to make money, smart ways that don't require you to own stocks blindly. There are other investments that won't send you to the poorhouse.
This book will tell you what went wrong, who the bad guys were, and what you have to do to restore your financial health. You can't just close your eyes. Ignoring Wall Street isn't the answer. Cash alone isn't the answer. This book has the answers.

    From Publishers Weekly
If you invested money in the last five years, chances are you lost some of it. Or even all of it. Rounds of layoffs at ill-conceived dot-coms may no longer be making headlines, but the toppling of behemoths WorldCom and Enron have alerted investors to the pitfalls of unprincipled accounting. In this little book, the outspoken commentator and cofounder of TheStreet.com breaks down how such widely touted companies got away with blatant fraud and why investors got screwed in the process. Cramer (Confessions of a Street Addict) uses WorldCom's Hindenburg-like plummet to illustrate how unscrupulous analysts hyped stocks they knew were already overvalued in return for hefty compensation. He goes after Jack Grubman, former analyst for Salomon Smith Barney, who "was the chief proselytizer for unrelenting, ineluctable, telecommunications growth." Grubman's success as an industry cheerleader got the better of WorldCom after he hyped its competitors. Turning his gaze to Enron, Cramer dissects this infamous corporate disaster. He examines who was really at fault, considering Ken Lay, Arthur Andersen, the SEC and Congress. He concludes, "maybe it was just everyone because Enron represented... a wholesale breakdown of every aspect of the legal, accounting, governmental and regulatory bulwark meant to keep corporate America honest." Without condescension, this compact volume serves as an easy-to-read manual on prudent investing as well as a deep-if opinionated-analysis of major bungles in recent business history.

    Chapter One: What Happened?

"Stocks for the Long Run...Buy and Hold...Next stop, Dow 36,000...Stocks as the only asset class worth owning...Tech Blue Chips...Stocks always come back...Don't ever sell...Selling's for losers...Why not put Social Security into stocks, after all they are the safest investments..."

Ahh, that litany, that rock-solid litany of reassurance about equities. Is there a soul on the planet who didn't suffer from the multiple brainwashings that the media, the academics, the brokerage houses, and the mutual funds mercilessly beat into our heads for a decade? Amazingly, after trillions were lost, we still have no regrets, no apologies, nary a mea culpa from those who heartlessly led us to the financial slaughter that outranks even those of the nightmare generations 1973-1974, and, alas, 1929-1934 -- that's right, the Great Depression. These one-note charlatans would, even after every penny of life savings had been lost, still recite their bogus mantras meant to take our eyes off the ball, and our wallets, even as they suffered not a penny for their admonitions. They haven't learned a thing about the havoc they have wrought. They are still out there shilling their wares, except now they are saying that the stock market is even more undervalued than before. Dow 36,000? You better hope they've perfected cryogenics by then. That's the only way you will live to see it.

This book is meant not as an epitaph to your hard-earned savings, but as an epitaph to their cynical reassurances and pseudo-scientific claptrap. This book should serve as an antidote to their sweet nostrums that have separated you so viciously and silently from your money. In short, they thought that if they got you in, you would never get out, and they would make fortunes off you before you figured out what the heck happened to your nest egg. The charlatans wrote their assurances of ever-higher stock prices when the market skyrocketed daily. Now that it has nosedived, their illogic seems deceitful if not downright larcenous.

Oh sure, the temptation to demonize seems far-fetched to some, particularly those who need stocks to go higher to make a living or have a successful venture. But as someone who has worked in the money business for more than three decades, and compounded money in his own fund at 24 percent after all fees, someone who has seen it all and done it all when it comes to stocks, I can tell you that exorcising demons may be the only way to assure you that it doesn't happen to you again.

Why were the odds stacked so against the individual investor? Why was the bloodletting so incredibly worse than it would have been if the sole cause of the downturn were the economy? Put simply: money, greed -- there was so much money to be made simply by keeping you in the dark about the practices of Wall Street. There were fees to be taken by managing assets; there were underwriter fees, initial public offering fees, fees from advertisers, mainly mutual funds and brokers; there were fees from lobbyists, accounting fees, lawyer fees, and fees from publishers. There were returns, outsized returns, that no one wanted to give up, including the public itself, and there were those huge gains that insiders generated by selling common stock against their options at the very top of the market and long after, enabling them to take out billions upon billions of dollars in gains, some right before their companies collapsed, leaving workers and pensioners holding nothing, not even a bag. The sums appropriated were so fabulous, and the penalties for abuse so small that the temptation to rig individual stocks and even the market itself, in the name of earnings "management" simply grew too great for all but the most holy of chief executives, which, alas, turned out to be too few to be noticed or to matter to battered 401k's. What started as a few apples turned into the whole orchard, but no one in a responsible position in government wants to admit that harsh but true judgment.

The actions taken by the federal government subsequent to the prodding by elected officials such as Eliot Spitzer, the attorney general of New York, who got the ball rolling, certainly helped clarify the conflicts, and even shed harsh light on the most revolting of them. But within weeks of these actions, the complex of interests that kept you in the dark about how the stock market really works was right back in action.

Which is why you need this book and need it now, because if you are going to rebuild your nest egg or fix your 401k, you first need to understand which forces destroyed it. Only then, once you understand the subtle means by which you were fooled into coughing up vast sums, will you be in a position to work your way back to where you were, regardless of the overall market's direction. It won't be quick -- after all, those overnight methods were what got us in this mess. Rebuilding your investments may not even be exciting, but we should have left the excitement for the ballpark or the movie houses. I will recommend to you a steady, solid way to make things back that can't be corrupted by the cavalier forces that coalesced into the current brutal bear market for stocks.

First, though, let's slay those nasty villains, those bear enablers that allowed the ursine capital destroyers to roam just about anywhere they wanted and take from you with reckless abandon. This will be a difficult task, but I intend to help you make your paycheck and your retirement money grow, not shrink, and I don't want your fees, your commissions, or your capital gains. I just want your losses to stop and the capital appreciation to begin.

Acerbic Wit meets History's Hamster Wheel
    By Edward J. Barton
This book was written by CNBC personality and former hedge fund manager Jim Cramer after the crash of 2001 and the subsequent scandals of Enron, Adelphia, Tyco, et al.

Jim's wit and cynicism comes through in spades, as does his (then) investment philosophy of focus on PE and dividend. The book is a light and easy read, and can evoke some emotions - both in the memory of the dot com/tech blow up and the subsequent financial services blow up, as well as the scandal that everyone vows will never be repeated, yet always is.

The couple take aways are that here we are 6 years later, and the game's the same - most of the issues Jim raised remain. And I am not sure that Jim didn't get a little swept up in it himself in 2007-2008. Secondly, that the reactions coming out of a financial crisis are soon forgotten - and those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

A cautionary tale, and unforunately one that seems to be on a continuous playback loop through modern economic history.

Candid, but too little too late.
    By A Customer
Cramer is candid in this book, but, unfortunately, it is too little too late. It would have been a pretty good read had this book come out three years ago. At this point, however, does anyone really need to be told that Enron and World Com were companies fraught with fraud. Is anyone out there still so naieve that he/she is not aware that Wall Street is plagued with charlatans and shenanigans.
