Sealab: America's Forgotten Quest to Live and Work on the Ocean Floor, by Ben Hellwarth

Sealab is the underwater Right Stuff: the compelling story of how a US Navy program sought to develop the marine equivalent of the space station—and forever changed man’s relationship to the sea.

While NASA was trying to put a man on the moon, the US Navy launched a series of daring experiments to prove that divers could live and work from a sea-floor base. When the first underwater “habitat” called Sealab was tested in the early 1960s, conventional dives had strict depth limits and lasted for only minutes, not the hours and even days that the visionaries behind Sealab wanted to achieve—for purposes of exploration, scientific research, and to recover submarines and aircraft that had sunk along the continental shelf. The unlikely father of Sealab, George Bond, was a colorful former country doctor who joined the Navy later in life and became obsessed with these unanswered questions: How long can a diver stay underwater? How deep can a diver go?

Sealab never received the attention it deserved, yet the program inspired explorers like Jacques Cousteau, broke age-old depth barriers, and revolutionized deep-sea diving by demonstrating that living on the seabed was not science fiction. Today divers on commercial oil rigs and Navy divers engaged in classified missions rely on methods pioneered during Sealab.

Sealab is a true story of heroism and discovery: men unafraid to test the limits of physical endurance to conquer a hostile undersea frontier. It is also a story of frustration and a government unwilling to take the same risks underwater that it did in space.

Ben Hellwarth, a veteran journalist, interviewed many surviving participants from the three Sealab experiments and conducted extensive documentary research to write the first comprehensive account of one of the most important and least known experiments in US history.

From Booklist
In the 1950s, naval medical doctor George Bond evangelized a vision of submarine habitats that was realized in the 1960s in three successive projects called Sealab. A deadly accident with Sealab III, however, terminated a program that journalist Hellwarth reconstructs. Sealab’s genesis lay in Bond’s research into the physiology of diving, though Hellwarth underscores that Bond’s imagination ranged far beyond devising safe procedures. To Bond, “inner space” was as significant a frontier of exploration as outer space, an idea supported by the addition of Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter to his team. Dozens of others completed the Sealab rosters, many of whom Hellwarth interviewed. With details of their submersible activities, Hellwarth strives to animate a narrative about the Sealabs—stationary, pressurized vessels that were lowered by crane to the seafloor and ran in place until something went wrong. Such perilous incidents supply Hellwarth’s dramatic peaks, while, overall, his assemblage of living memory about Sealab constitutes important historical preservation of its place, possibly as cover for deep-sea espionage activities, in the annals of the U.S. Navy. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
“During the same period that NASA was working toward putting a man on the moon, the U.S. Navy was testing ways for people to thrive underwater. This tale of the ill-fated Sealab project (whose impact is still felt in deep-sea diving) is as captivating as an adventure novel.”
—Parade

“It’s Hellwarth’s eye for anecdote—pranks the aquanauts played on their commanding officers, the sparkling wine they drank at 200 feet below sea level even though the high pressure forced out the fizz—that brings this long-shuttered program back to life.”
—Discover

“A thrilling, true-life adventure that transports the reader to a place as foreboding, exciting, and dangerous as outer space. Ben Hellwarth’s Sealab is more than a great history of unsung American explorers. It is a tale of man’s deepest desires and grandest ambitions, and his willingness to risk it all for dreams as vast as the ocean floor itself.”
—Robert Kurson, author of Shadow Divers

“[Hellwarth] combines the work of a diligent investigative reporter with that of a feature writer . . . Ben Hellwarth has produced a fascinating history of man in the sea. It is a book well worth reading, whether you are an aficionado of undersea operations or a casual reader who likes a great sea story.”
—Naval History

“Sealab is a must read for anyone who wants to know the true story behind America’s Man-in-the-Sea Program, complete with all of its triumphs and tragedies.”
—Dr. Robert D. Ballard, Deep Sea Explorer and author of The Discovery of the Titanic

“I grew up with Sealab and Conshelf. Our decisionmakers need to focus on the importance of one of our vital life support systems—the ocean, 70% of our planet. This incredibly detailed, precise book should be read by those who care about our future so they can start planning by basing their passion and decisions on solid foundations.”
—Jean-Michel Cousteau, founder and president, Ocean Futures Society

“A remarkably stirring narrative filled with an awe-inducing cast of scientific adventurers who risked life and limb to not only explore the ocean’s depths, but to make them their own. What Tom Wolfe revealed in such riveting detail of the space program in The Right Stuff, Ben Hellwarth matches here for underwater discovery.”
—Neal Bascomb, author of The Perfect Mile and Hunting Eichmann

“Ben Hellwarth’s engrossing, meticulously researched chronicle of America’s quest to live underwater doesn’t merely recount a forgotten chapter in contemporary history. It reminds us of a time when the country had big, larger-than-life ideas—and the Right Stuff-sized characters to plunge into them.”
—David Browne, author of Fire and Rain: The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, CSNY, and the Lost Story of 1970

“Painstakingly reported and beautifully written, Sealab is proof that American literary journalism is alive and well. How deep under the water can man go, and how long can he stay there? Sealab is Ben Hellwarth’s fascinating answer.”
—Robert S. Boynton, Director of Literary Reportage Concentration, Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, New York University, and author of The New New Journalism

"Intelligently and accurately recorded, Ben Hellwarth's Sealab finally brings the historically significant story of America's daring aquanauts out of the long shadow of the nation's astronauts. Jules Verne himself would have been proud to tell this tale of teamwork and raw courage, with its colorful cast of divers boldly attempting to go far deeper into a hostile ocean and stay down far longer than ever before. Sealab is a magnificent book that honors those who risked all for science and their country.
—Leslie Leaney, Founder and Publisher, The Journal of Diving History

Very well-written, very comprehensive account
By CJ
This is a very good book for several reasons:
- The writing style is excellent. The author tells a story with a good balance between the personalities, the challenges, and the science/physiology of underwater habitats. The story-telling is first-class. There are some larger-than-life personalities involved like Jacques Cousteau and astronaut Scott Carpenter, and this history is set in an interesting environment of exploration and competition.
- The detail is amazing. The author leaves no stone unturned, and covers every aspect from the design of the habitats to the medical science of saturation diving and decompression. The book covers every step in the process of bringing the idea of underwater living to reality, including all of the pressure chamber tests conducted prior to the first Sealab deployment.

Overall: I gave this rating 4-stars because it is so detailed, so exhaustive, that it will probably only satisfy readers with a very strong interest in underwater habitats. There are a lot of non-fiction books out there that take a subject and make it available to the average reader. "Sealab" is too detailed and its coverage of the subject too thorough to qualify as a book to capture the interest of an average reader. That is not necessarily a bad thing, it just depends what you're looking for. I thought the account got bogged down by the details, but other readers may object to a broader survey of events that are just not covered in other works.

NOTE: I put a lot of effort in capturing the strengths and weaknesses of this book as I perceived them and I welcome comments and feedback on this review.

Forgotten History
By Alan Dorfman
Anyone who has ever watched Star Trek has heard the narration proclaiming outer space to be the "Final Frontier." It might be a great sound bite for the times but even while astronauts were circling the planet and landing on the moon and as the famous "space race" with the Russians was in full throttle there was another frontier waiting to be explored. This was Earth's inner space, otherwise known as our oceans. Ben Hellwarth's new book "Sealab: America's Forgotten Quest To Live And Work On The Ocean Floor" is the compelling true story of America's attempt at dominion over the seas.

In the early 1960s, Navy Doctor George Bond authored a proposal to explore and make a presence on the ocean floor. He felt it would not only be beneficial to the Navy in terms of military and rescue acumen but there would also be spin-offs into civilian life, much like the ongoing space program led to Teflon and Tang, as well as "endeavors such as mineral mining, marine biology, and marine archaeology" (although it would be oil drilling that would be the greatest beneficiary). As the author says about Dr. Bond, he "believed that undersea exploration would bring the next generation of antibiotics, and that massive supplies of fresh water that boiled up from the continental shelf could be tapped. He believed, too, that the very survival of the human species depended on our ability to take up residence on the seabed and learn to harvest the ocean's edible protein."

Even though the concept of living on the ocean floor goes at least as far back as Jules Verne, Dr. Bonds' "Proposal for Underwater Research" with his exploration and exploitation ideas was rejected by the Navy. A former country doctor used to working on his own, Dr. Bond ignored the official rejection and began sub rosa experiments on the ability of animals (and ultimately man) to adapt to and work in the increased pressure under the ocean, recruiting a small team of like-minded scientists and divers. "Sealab: America's Forgotten Quest To Live And Work On The Ocean Floor" is the story of how Dr. Bond and his ever-changing cast of co-workers went from humble, unapproved experiments - often paid for out of their own pockets - to an always underfunded, often jury-rigged, project which ultimately would change the world while not necessarily turning out the way it's principals imagined.

And it's a great story and a wonderful read. There are heroes and villains, triumphs and tragedies, lives, deaths and near-deaths, joy and sorrow, blame and fault-finding, fascinating characters including a former astronaut, surprising outcomes with a dose of international espionage to boot.

Chock-full of facts from government documents (though certain details of the project remain classified) and drawn from author Hellwarth's personal interviews with many of the remaining living individuals involved in the Sealab projects, "Sealab: America's Forgotten Quest To Live And Work On The Ocean Floor" is an incredibly detailed history, crisply written and abundantly footnoted. The writer makes all the arcane details (and there are many) understandable and gives the reader the feeling of being present as the events occur, a major success for Mr. Hellwarth. It also made me wonder about not only how different our understanding of the effects and extent of climate change might have been had the Sealab program had not been discontinued but also whether America should once again take on this challenge of living and working on the seafloor. The benefits haven't changed but a half century's worth of technological improvements have occurred that could make the further exploration of the ocean a wise investment in the Earth's future.

Fascinating and exceptionally readable, Ben Hellwarth's "Sealab: America's Forgotten Quest To Live And Work On The Ocean Floor" is well worth your time and effort.

Sunken Treasure
By JB
This is a terrific story about a barely noticed but remarkable undertaking: the Navy's attempt to create useful habitats for divers farther and farther down under the ocean surface. The author does a fantastic job of describing how the program started, who conceived it, how it evolved, what milestones were reached, what obstacles it faced, who partook in the events, and its ultimate fate. Interesting histories of the diving technology that preceded and post-dated the experiments are woven throughout. It's especially impressive how the complicated science involved in 'saturation diving' is explained in easy to understand terminology. I can't imagine the amount of work that went into collecting the years of data, and then reducing it all down and presenting it in a way that reads like a novel. From page one we meet an extremely interesting cast of characters; there is always someone to pull for. Although this is ostensibly an account of a series of underwater experiments it is really a story about personalities, ambition, and achievement. 'Sealab' is quite an accomplishment: a work of non-fiction that is truly informative but written with all requisite suspense, surprise, tragedy and triumph attendant to classic adventure stories -- highly recommended.

From Publishers Weekly
The many uses Marken has for "fix" indicate how fun and thorough his sequel is to How to Do (Just About) Everything. From chapters on how to "Fix a Lamp" and "Fix Your Kid Lunch" to "Fix Your Dog or Cat" and "Fix a Poker Game," the author of three Dummies books creates the go-to tome for life's little calamities. He and his 12 contributors strike an even tenor as they group crises under such headings as "Computers & Home Electronics," "Everyday Annoyances" and "Occasional Disasters"; they structure each nuisance therein with brief introductions, lists of items for tackling the problem, steps for solving it, icons denoting difficulty levels, tips, warnings, tables, illustrations and suggestions for further assistance. Occasionally readers will catch the Marken team throwing its hands in the air ("Rescue a Burned Cake or Pie" suggests using unburned portions as ice-cream topping) or engaging in overkill-"Get Rid of Red-Eye in Photographs" asks that users purchase an "anti-red eye pen, scanner, image-editing software, tissue paper or a white filter, and a flash diffuser." The book may sometimes comes across as rather fusty (compared to the hit Worst-Case Scenario handbooks, whose readership Marken seems to be courting) but, by and large, most predicaments are resolved thoughtfully and creatively, and a few-such as "Soothe a Sunburn," "Put Out a Kitchen Fire" and, yes, "Get Out of a Fix"-can even prevent harm.

From Library Journal
Like Courtney Rosen's How To Do (Just About) Everything, Marken's manual is aimed at the amateur needing brief, step-by-step instructions. Entries on repairing objects, improving skills, and even mending relationships are included in 13 broad categories. To find help quickly, readers can use the index to locate entry numbers, though some patrons will prefer browsing. For the most part, the entries are categorized logically, although two categories ("Everyday Annoyances" and "Occasional Disasters") seem to be catch-all sections combining things as diverse as fixing a wobbly table and eliminating bad breath. Most entries include a margin note ("What You'll Need"), while some also have "Tips" and "Warnings" when appropriate. Some 300 illustrations are included for clarity. Marken, a former editor of Sunset magazine, has 30 years of experience in how-to book and magazine publishing, and it shows here. Though there is some overlap with the previous title and with other general household manuals, this book's focus on problem-solving, enumerated instructions, and clear layout make it worthwhile. Recommended for most public libraries. Bonnie Poquette, Shorewood P.L., WI

From Booklist
Marken, a former editor-in-chief of sunset magazine, has produced (with the help of a dozen contributors) a better-than-average fix-it-yourself tome. Quietly funny, it overflows with information: its 551 solutions, divided into 13 different categories, address everything from everyday annoyances and occasional disasters to cooking and cars. What's the difference between this and, say, Heloise's hints? Quite a bit: an articulated level of difficulty, warnings about products or processes, tips, and numbered short steps to mend quickly without heartbreak or heart attacks. Giving Barbie a makeover (make sure you don't blow-dry her hair) gets just as much prominence as disentangling pasta. On a more serious note are both typical tasks, such as fixing a wobbly table, and most unusual achievements ("remember love is a verb" when mending bad relationships). To cherish--and to chuckle at. ...you need this book. While it lacks the narrative arc of, say, Moby Dick, it's just about as long -- and a heck of a lot more useful. Just the thing for an impromptu Nantucket sleigh ride (see p. 347). Look, what with what plumbers charge these days, you'll save the price of admission just as soon as you've saved $27. Extra bonus tip: If you have a table with one leg about 6 inches shorter than the other three, you can use the book itself to fix the table!

Think of England: A Novel, by Alice Elliott Dark

Two cataclysmic events occur on February 9, 1964. The Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show and later that night, nine-year-old Jane MacLeod's life changes forever. It has been said that children are good observers but poor interpreters. Jane's interpretation of the events of that evening shapes her life in ways she doesn't recognize. Think of England follows Jane from an intense love affair in the ex-pat scene in punk-era London to working motherhood in New York to a family reunion in the country -- and a reckoning with the ghost that has stood between her and her dream of a happy family.

From Publishers Weekly
Dark's stark, emotionally honest debut novel (which follows her short story collections In the Gloaming and Naked to the Waist) traces one woman's reckoning with a childhood tragedy, set against mid-1960s America and swinging 1970s London. In rural eastern Pennsylvania, nine-year-old Jane MacLeod is writing a book about the happy family she desperately wishes she had. Her mother, Via, is dissatisfied and petulant, always resentful of the time Jane's father, Emlin, a heart surgeon, must spend with his patients at the hospital. One night in 1964, the family (including Jane's two younger brothers and sister and Via's homosexual brother, Uncle Francis) gathers to watch the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. All goes well until Emlin discovers that someone has taken the phone off the hook, so that he can't receive emergency calls. Angrily, he accuses Via (who accuses Jane) and rushes off to the hospital. He is killed in an automobile accident. Fifteen years later, Jane has moved to London, where she's become friends with bohemians Nigel and Colette. A political bombing and an affair with aloof (and married) American writer Clay West lead Jane to confront her long-buried guilt over her parents' unhappiness and father's death. Dark uses cultural icons and historic events to give texture to the pivotal moments in her characters' lives. Although Jane's final revelation is no surprise, the author's languid yet affecting style and true-to-life dialogue make this a satisfying read for the baby-boomer set.

After two shining story collections, a first novel about young Jane, who thinks that she is responsible for all the family tension.

From The New Yorker
Everything in this spare, eccentrically paced book is a pleasure to read, from the exposition of nine-year-old Jane MacLeod's home life in Pennsylvania to a family reunion, thirty-six years later. Jane's father is a heart surgeon, and he's not at home enough to please his wife, stuck with four children and a grand sense of romance. Jane, who adores her father, is unsympathetic to her mother's yearnings, especially when her mother walks out on him, dragging the children with her. Only many years later, when Jane is in England as a young aspiring poet, do we learn exactly how tragic this event was, and how it shaped Jane's life. It's almost impossible to write about the kind of subtle, inward sorrows and tensions that animate this story, and the author manages the challenge handsomely.

By Brent Holcomb
Humorous, devastating, and completely satisfying, 'Think of England' tells a story that bridges a generation gap in its characters and readers alike. It's obvious that Dark is most comfortable in writing the shorter form, for her book reads like 3 short stories. That is, until the subtle conclusion ties each section together brilliantly. As I closed the book, I realized that I had no questions. Every element of the story had been perfectly uncovered - each wound, each joke, each character. Unlike most novels I read, I had no doubts...that is a rare occasion, and I urge you to read this book.

Like "Atonement"--only better
By A Customer
This book is similar to Ian McEwan's "Atonement" in several respects: Both take place in sections over three different years in the course of a lifetime; both focus on a female protagonist with writerly ambitions who comes to terms with tragic events; and the bulk of both take place in England, though Dark's characters are mainly Americans. McEwan uses obfuscation and trickery, which ultimately renders his story false. Dark 's novel, in contrast, is bracingly honest, yielding far deeper and more resonant insights. Concise, beautifully written, and emotionally poignant, this quiet, wise book deserves a large, McEwan-size audience and regard.

well written character study
By A Customer
In 1964 Wynnemoor, Pennsylvania, nine-year-old Jane MacLeod escapes from her unhappily married parents by writing about happy families coming together. However, on the night the Beatles appear on TV, her mother unable to stand the way her surgeon husband constantly deserts her to care for his patients, takes the children and leaves. Jane blames herself because she informed her father the phone was off the hook, something her mother did to keep the hospital from calling.

Now in her mid twenties, Jane is visiting London, heeding the advice of her grandmother to always THINK OF ENGLAND when depressed. She makes friends there, but feels guilt from what she caused to her family. Jane remains disconnected and still yearning for a happy family.

Thirty-six, Jane is a single mother of nine-year old Emily. At her mother's sixty-fifth birthday bash, Jane and her mother discuss that fateful day for the first time since it happened. Jane begins to finally come to grips with the underlying cause of why she lives s life filled with guilt. Perhaps now she can heal and shower the love of a happy family on her child?

THINK OF ENGLAND is at his best when Jane takes center stage, as she is a wonderfully complex character. When the story line places her in a back seat (during the middle years), the tale loses focus spinning in a different direction. However, the plot rights itself for the final segment. Alice Elliot Dart's tale is a well written character study that is intended for those who want to know the answer to is that all there is?

The Heart of the Soul: Emotional Awareness, by Gary Zukav, Linda Francis

New York Times mega-bestselling author of The Seat of the Soul, Gary Zukav takes a giant leap forward in his message, with this guide to the next level of spiritual growth.

"THE LONGEST JOURNEY YOU WILL MAKE IN YOUR LIFE IS FROM YOUR HEAD TO YOUR HEART."

With the rare combination of profound psychological insight and deep spirituality that has already drawn millions of readers to his two great national bestsellers, The Seat of the Soul and Soul Stories, prizewinning author Gary Zukav now joins with his spiritual partner Linda Francis to help us develop a new emotional awareness that is central to our spiritual development.

In The Seat of the Soul, Zukav brilliantly set forth his fundamental concepts, explaining how the expansion of human perception beyond the five senses leads to a new understanding of power as the alignment of the personality with the soul -- "authentic power." In Soul Stories, he showed how such concepts as harmony, cooperation, sharing, and reverence for Life express themselves in other people's lives. Now, in The Heart of the Soul, he and Francis take the next major step forward in showing us the importance of emotional awareness in applying these concepts to our own daily lives.

Amazon.com Review
We are all students in the "Earth school," according to authors Gary Zukav and Linda Francis in The Heart of the Soul. And the time has come to create a whole new lesson plan. For thousands of years we were outwardly focused, as we mastered the tasks of cultivating food and building shelter. Unfortunately, we are still outwardly fixated, obsessively accumulating more wealth, material objects, and power. "What enabled our species to survive so long is now bad medicine. In fact, it is poison," according to Zukav and Francis. What we need now is an inward focus, in which we cultivate the heart and live in alignment with our souls.

As it turns out, The Heart of the Soul is a timely guidebook, with a release date exactly three months after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. "The pursuit of external power produces physical violence and destruction between nations. You can see this in every newscast," the authors write: Billions of people live in poverty, are hungry, and suffer oppression, and brutality. Changing these circumstances requires our hearts. It requires the ability to feel the pain and joy of others, and to take their needs as seriously as we take our own. And here is where the heart lessons come in. "As long as there are parts of yourself that reach outward to make you feel safe, valuable, and loved, you need to identify them and heal them." The authors include numerous exercises and activities to help readers feel and understand their emotions in order to "empower the soul" and live a more rewarding and joyful life. The words and intentions are indeed poignant and worthwhile. The numerous boxes, diagrams, and passages in bold print create a self-help structure that some will find simplistic and others will find inviting. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Asserting that "our species is undergoing an unprecedented transformation," Zukav (The Seat of the Soul; Soul Stories) urges people to focus not on "external power" but on "authentic power," and to seek to align their personalities with their souls. People should learn to read emotional pain (manifested in physical symptoms) as energy being released in "fear and doubt" rather than "love and trust," Zukav says. He includes a diagram of "your energy system," which he doesn't acknowledge as the seven chakras common in ancient Eastern religions. In fact, while drawing on Hindu and Buddhist thought, Taoism, Christianity, psychology and many other sources, Zukav credits no previous study or tradition. Reincarnation, detachment, present-moment living and bringing unconscious emotions to the surface are not original concepts, but the author's lack of references implies that they are. Questionable claims "a new human species is being born," for example, or "energy continually flows into the top of your head" are also offered as indisputable facts. Zukav's abundance of vague metaphors and lack of specific personal stories leaves the reader wondering how (or if) the concepts he presents might be applied to everyday issues and events. This book could be another adequate tool in the pursuit of New Age spirituality, but it is hardly the complete and final word the author suggests. Still, with Zukav's track record and Oprah-readiness, expect hefty sales.

From Booklist
The premise of this new book by the best-selling author of The Seat of the Soul (1999) and Soul Stories (2000) (now writing with coauthor Linda Francis) is that human society, the world over, is changing. "Old aspirations are being replaced by new," the authors aver. "Comfort and influence are no longer goals that inspire, even those who live in poverty. The new goal is spiritual development." To promote spiritual development, Zukav and Francis offer a program that teaches how to become aware, at all times, of what one is feeling. Learning to experience emotion, so the authors insist, creates "authentic power," which is defined here as "the alignment of your personality with your soul." To that end, Zukav and his collaborator offer a series of techniques--a full course, in other words--for achieving an emotional awareness that will lead to authentic power, which is different from external power (big jobs, lots of money, big houses, etc.). The authors warn that the creation and accumulation of authentic power require a lifetime of practice and pursuit, and their book is the first step in a long-term realization process. Readers will be arriving in droves to request this surefire best-seller. Brad Hooper

Reflection of yourself in this book
By RaDragonfly
I must say I don't understand the other negative reviews. I found this book to be absolutely wonderful. Gary and Linda tackle the seeds of addictive behaviors, be it food, alcohol, drugs or sex. They also tackle issues such as perfectionism and work-aholism as well as others. I love the gentleness with which this book presents itself. It is not a book that you quickly read through and/or skim along. You need to read a section and actually think about what is stated to receive the full and rich benefits. Yes, it is written in a simple language and does repeat certain concepts; however, the concept is written to further stress that we need to look inward rather than be constantly reactive to our outside stressors. It offers yet another way of looking at our emotions by focusing on the energy of them and where that energy is released in our bodies. It also offers more seeds of self reflection. I loved this book and will recommend it to others whole-heartedly.

Do some research Gary!
By A Customer
Although this book surely has some good stuff to offer, with all due respect, it is a painful divergence from the well researched and intelligent works such as Dancing Wu Li Masters. Although it does extend the perspectives of the Seat of The Soul, it largely misses the boat on actually dealling with the source of emotions. It leaves the reader burdened with intense bodily attunement and perhaps riddled with guilt about not "releasing their energy properly" yet without any effective corrective tools. If Gary is to act as a public authority ..., taking the time to investigate the emotion literature would be the authentically empowered thing to do. Works like this simply muddy the waters. The high price of fame and publication deadlines are also readily apparent. The repetition is excrutiating.

Chapter 1: What Is Rootwork?

Rootwork is a form of folk magick that uses the elements of nature to create change in ourselves, others, or our environment. It is an African-American form of shamanism that makes use of herbs, stones, rocks, and other organic material to heal the body or the mind, or to solve a problem. Like all other forms of shamanism, Rootworkers believe that we can use the unseen forces of nature to manipulate the tangible world.

Rootwork is also known as "Hoodoo" in the southern part of the United States. The word Hoodoo is probably derived from the word juju, an African word meaning "magic," or from Voodoo, a corrupted version of the Fon word Vodun, meaning "spirit" or "god." But unlike Vodun, Lukumi, Candomble, Shango, Batque, etc., Rootwork is not a religion. It has no pantheon or priesthood. It refers only to a set of healing and spell practices, and the practitioner can be whatever religion they wish. The theology behind the spells has been lost, thus there are no formal initiations to become a Rootworker. However, a good practitioner is traditionally referred to as Doctor, Mother, Uncle, or Aunt out of respect for their vast problem-solving knowledge.

Prior to the great migration of blacks to urban cities, these shamans were equally feared and respected, and usually lived away from the "regular folks" and made a profitable business off people who would sneak to see them under the cloak of darkness for help in resolving their issues. Most people lived by the saying "You want salvation, go to church. You want something done, go to the Rootworker."

Rootwork also served a practical purpose in the black community. Many Africans had experience working with herbs in their homeland and transmitted their botanical knowledge to their children. This information was passed on orally and was used to cure the sick and ailing. The most common afflictions Rootworkers treated were smallpox and digestive disorders, by boiling down the roots of certain herbs like the spikenard (hyptis suaveolens) or the sensitive plant (mimosa pudica) and making a tonic for their clients to drink.

All blacks in the South had to know basic healing techniques because traditional health care was too expensive for slaves to afford. In fact, many whites couldn't afford a traditional doctor either, and would often turn to their slaves' botanical knowledge for cures.

Native Americans and Rootwork

African slaves would often seek refuge among Native Americans because they had a similar worldview and they were willing to teach them how to survive in the New World. Although Africans were knowledgeable about African plants and their uses, they had no idea what to do with the herbs found in this strange land. Native Americans taught them the properties of local herbs and roots. The depiction of Native American chiefs and warriors on the packages of many "luck drawing" floor washes are testimony to the impact Native Americans had on rootwork.

These floor washes are simply a combination of water mixed with different perfumes and contain no herbs or roots at all. Most people don't read the ingredients in these products but just assume their effectiveness because of the clever packaging. Certainly if there is an image of a Native American on it, the product must be "magical," right? When, in fact, it's about as magical as Mop-n-Glow.

Rootwork Today

When African Americans migrated north, many left Rootwork behind. They were seeking better opportunities and a more sophisticated way of living, and Rootwork was considered "backward" or "country" and was frowned upon. This theme was dealt with in Julie Dash's cinematic masterpiece, Daughters of the Dust.

As standard medical care became more available, fewer people had need for the Rootworkers. But many still consulted them to perform divination or spell work.

Today, because of miseducation and the media's negative portrayal of any spiritual system based in Africa, most people avoid Rootwork. Everything that is African is feared, ignored, and rejected because of a deep and painful history of erasure of Africa as a major contributor to world culture. Even with the vast knowledge accumulated in the last century, when most people think of African spirituality and its practices in the New World, the mind usually conjures up images of spooky witchdoctors, bloody cannibalistic rituals, and evil curses. The media still transmits this propaganda through cartoons and movies, especially in the horror genre such as The Serpent and the Rainbow, Child's Play, Voodoo Dawn, and Tales from the Crypt to name a few.
A case in point is Webster's dictionary definition of Hoodoo:

Hoodoo: 1. voodoo 2. bad luck 3. A person or thing that brings bad luck.

Inaccuracies such as this pervade our culture, resulting not only in a negative psychological effect on African Americans and others in the Diaspora, but also in preventing others from understanding the true nature of these practices. This book is an attempt to correct these inaccuracies by placing Rootwork in its proper historical, cultural, and spiritual context.

Very little meat to this book
By Celene
This book has very little meat to it - it is a skinny book with big print and it really qualifies more like an essay on the subject instead of a book. The information is very basic and simplistic and it completely misses the point on the more subtle complexities behind rootworking. The impression I get is the author just did a quick internet search and then gathered what she found in an essay and voila - book. It may be that she knows a lot on this subject, but her writting does not reflect it. Some of the spells here are more common knowledge and old wives tales than actual rootworking spells.

All in all - this book is a waste of money. If you are looking for information on the subject just about any book out there on Hoodoo and Herbal magick is better than this book. Hell, if you do a google search on Rootworking, you will probably get more information than you would in this book.

Very Vague
By durmac
I bought this book to introduce myself to a part of my culture, but while the history of Hoodoo was ok (could have been a little more detailed), the spells were very vague. A beginning pratitioner would not do well to use this book because of the vagueness of the spell instructions & the inability to contact the author (her contact info does not work--tried several times including doing an online search). This book is ok as a quick, but not as a sufficient, resource tool. Use it for a brief intro to Hoodoo & nothing more. I would advise spending the extra money on a really indepthed book on Hoodoo tradition & spells to get a good understanding of the history & pratice before delving into this dynamic culture.

Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945, by Evan Thomas

Sea of Thunder is a taut, fast-paced, suspenseful narrative of the Pacific War that culminates in the battle of Leyte Gulf, the greatest naval battle ever fought.

Told from both the American and Japanese sides, through the eyes of commanders and sailors of both navies, Thomas's history adds an important new dimension to our understanding of World War II.

Drawing on oral histories, diaries, correspondence, postwar testimony from both American and Japanese participants, and interviews with survivors, Thomas provides an account not only of the great sea battle and Pacific naval war, but of the contrasting cultures pitted against each other.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Thomas, Newsweek's assistant managing editor, turns his considerable narrative and research talents to Leyte Gulf, history's largest and most complex naval battle. He addresses the subject from the perspectives of four officers: William Halsey, who commanded the U.S. 3rd Fleet; Adm. Takeo Kurita, his Japanese counterpart; Adm. Matome Ugaki, Kurita's senior subordinate and a "true believer" in Japan's destiny; and Cdr. Ernest Evans, captain of a lowly destroyer, the U.S.S. Johnston. The Americans believed the Japanese incapable of great military feats, while the Japanese believed the Americans were incapable of paying the price of war. Both were tragically wrong. Halsey steamed north in pursuit of a what turned out to be a decoy, while Kurita's main force was positioned to destroy the American landing force in the Philippines. Evans repeatedly took the Johnston into harm's way against what seemed overwhelming odds. His heroism, matched by a dozen other captains and crews, convinced Kurita to break off the action. With Halsey's battleships and carriers just over the horizon, Kurita refused to sacrifice his men at the end of a war already lost. Ugaki bitterly denounced the lack of "fighting spirit and promptitude" that kept him from an honorable death. Evans fought and died like a true samurai. As Thomas skillfully reminds us, war is above all the province of irony. (Nov.)

From Booklist
The biographer of John Paul Jones adds another valuable book to naval historiography with this study of the Pacific Campaign of World War II, the greatest naval campaign in history. He relates its events through the actions of four naval officers, Americans Admiral William Halsey and Commander Ernest Evans and Japanese admirals Takeo Kurita and Matome Ugaki. As their stories unfold, Thomas discloses the development and corporate cultures of two navies openly preparing to fight and finally getting down to it in 1941. The climax comes at Leyte Gulf, where Halsey's overaggressive tactics exposed the invasion fleet off Leyte to Kurita's surface force, which Evans' destroyer Johnston helped repel (see James D. Hornfischer's Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, 2004), and where Ugaki's Kamikaze Corps debuted. Thomas has a notable knack for researching and writing tales of the sea that are entirely accessible to comparative landlubbers yet also enthralling for readers weaned on Samuel Eliot Morison and C. S. Forester. Heads up, WWII maritime collections, in particular. Roland Green

Review
"Thomas's prose keeps pace with the fight and captures its eerie quality...The result is both a naval adventure story and a striking meditation on the nature of military courage." -- The New Yorker

With this exemplary book, Evan Thomas has set a benchmark for historical writing -- and analysis -- against which subsequent work will be measured." -- Michael J. Bonafield, Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

"One of the most insightful analyses yet written of personalities and military cultures at war...An exciting read...Thomas draws the battle scenes with exquisite precision...Those who would direct military strategy and policy should be well warned -- and should have Thomas's book, well-worn, at their bedsides." -- Wesley K. Clark, The Washington Post Book World

Now that these events are 50 years in the past, much more material is available and the readers benefit. The author is at his best making sense of action spread across the Pacific and the personalities that shaped the battle. Well done.

Occasions (New Series of Lifestyle Books), by Kate Spade

Every occasion calls out for something extra, whether it's flowers you set on the table, foods to honor a special gathering, or the selection of music. For both hostess and guest, consideration of those around you is among the most important qualities for any enjoyable occasion. A smile and sense of humor are also essential, and before the canapés and night lighting a good hostess is ultimately defined by a welcoming and gracious demeanor.
In Occasions, designer Kate Spade invites you into her world of easy, festive entertaining, where the emphasis is not on "the perfect meal" but on having "the perfect time." It's a world where laughter and conversation at dinner parties are encouraged and where spilled red wine on the couch is no reason to stop the music. As Kate says, "Making your guests feel at home is truly an art and it's one worth cultivating."
Any occasion begins with preparation, and at the outset Kate describes such basic components as lighting (votive candles are a must); table linens, flatware, and glassware; flowers (trimmed short and tightly massed); even bedding for overnight or weekend guests. Party shopping lists, hors d'oeuvres and cocktail favorites, and dinner party menus are all included. An "Alphabet of Special Events," from baby showers to tailgate picnics, is both anecdotal and useful for would-be hostesses everywhere.
Whether you entertain a lot or a little, and whether your style is casual or formal, Occasions, with more than 230 charming watercolor illustrations, is a handy and fresh approach to the subject, a book to be treasured today and over the years. Above all, at any gathering "hospitality makes for infectious fun."

Amazon.com Review
Back in 1993, the editor-turned-designer Kate Spade made a splash in the fashion world by turning out a small collection of boxy, utilitarian handbags, each elegantly accented with her name stitched in discreet, lowercase letters. As a result, the simplicity and unabashed refinement of the Spade moniker on those Lilliputian labels has come to define the very foundation on which the designer has since built a fashion empire, one that now, in addition to handbags, includes shoes, clothing, and smart home things, all of which embody the Spade formula of timeless style--a seamless merging of cheerful colors, clean shapes, and well-chosen embellishments.

Not bad for a Kansas City-born girl who used to comb vintage stores for fun. Having perfected and expertly marketed her own brand of personal style (one that has famously been counterfeited throughout the world), the designer has emerged with an equally elegant trio of books whose topics Spade has become a virtual authority: Style, Occasions, and Manners.

Applying a personal touch to everything you do is Spade's mantra, and leads us off to parties big and small in Occasions. Just like its sister volumes Style and Manners, Occasions has the spirit of a light-hearted scrapbook, but it still packs a bounty of inspired entertaining ideas into its slim proportions. From classic cocktail recipes and setting a sparkling table to seasonal menus, party themes, and the art of the perfect toast, Spade offers all the ingredients for making a party memorable (and maintaining grace under pressure). While she often spotlights the wisdom and flair of famous party stars she loves (Truman Capote and his Black & White ball among them), Spade in her own words resonates as the real tastemaker, getting the balance between girl-next-door and bon vivant just right. --Christene Barberich

From Booklist
Moving from creating handbags to dispensing advice, Kate Spade, of the eponymous fashion house, plunges into publishing with a smart little book akin to Coco Chanel's oh-so-classic little black dress. Surprisingly, her volume yields a goodly amount of verve and veracity, wit and wisdom. It begins with a few questions and answers (called "Have you ever wondered?"), which function as teasers to what lies within. The book is divided into three sections; two are filled with direct advice and the third is a collection of miscellany . The advice is classic and always in the best of taste. Barbara Jacobs

Occasions Give Everyone the Opportunity to be the Hostess with the Utmost Style
By Lisa Plancich
The cover and design are bright red. It's a perfect color for all occasions with a white paint brush look depicting a woman sitting among boxes. The cover opens to this quote, "Occasions always gracious, sometimes irreverent". Well stated.

The book opens with little nagging questions a host, hostess or guest may wonder but seldom ask. Kate Spade tackles the questions and addresses the answer before you are saddled with dilemmas like a non-alcoholic drink at a cocktail party or what to put into a well-stocked bar.

The topics include three main chapters titled, Setting the scene, Party standards and Specific events. The book helps you along, in little pieces, to consider details like lighting, flowers and music. It then moves forward to setting the table and how/what to serve. Finally Spade closes in on the specific event and how to differentiate the occasion by making it extra special.

In setting the scene, Ms. Spade discusses décor such as linens, stocking the cupboard with basics like flatware, dinnerware, glassware etc. She also graciously supplies shopping lists for the newbie entertainer. Music and lights, such as votives vs. tapers, invitations and even being a good guest is addressed.

In the party standards chapter Ms. Spade discusses the mixed drink, wine and beer. She helps the host along by deciding on hors d'oevores and then assists with a shopping list and timeline. Aside from food hints and helps, she discusses the guest room and how to entertain beyond just a few hours in your home.

"Occasions" fills itself out in the closing chapter with special events. Brunch and birthdays and how to make them special are contrasted with picnic and even the "un-occasion". What Kate Spade seems to want her reader to know is that any occasion is doable. Certainly there is the possibility of challenges but the payoff is so much greater. Life is more interesting when you look past what might go wrong and go for it.

A lot is covered in this little book. Detail is sparse yet to the point. Ms. Spade omits fluff and details. Entire books could be devoted to many of these topics. Kate Spades pared down style, much like her accessory designs, makes her reader aware of considering these details. If you need more information you are now armed with your topic and the internet will allow you, the reader, to zero in on specifics.

This would be a great book for a bride to be or a new homeowner. Kate Spade encourages someone to open their home and embrace the ease that comes with having people over. She implies that anyone can be a great hostess and put on a great party. It isn't difficult. It just takes a smile and consideration for the guests. Unlike many "experts" who leave their viewers/readers questioning if they can do it, Kate Spate let's us know that with just a little planning we can pull it off.

Great book!

A great book for a hostess gift, shower gift, etc. I received a copy for my birthday and then decided to get it for a friend for a wedding shower present. Very classic ideas and a must for a Kate Spade lover!

Re-hashed Work
By A Customer
I agree with the other reviewer. I bought all of the books in this series and am shocked at how much of the advice has been taken from previous authors on these topics. She is copying classics like Emily Post and simply re-wording the text. Except for the cute drawings, this series is a waste of money. If you want to know how to do things "correctly", read Letitia Baldridge's "The New Manners For the '90's". It covers everything and is written by a woman with the education and experience to know of which she speaks! Not someone who using her fashion connections to flood the magazines and talk shows with her "discovery" of this information.
