From Publishers Weekly
No longer satisfied with gentlemanly intelligence gathering, with the advent of WWII the United States changed its espionage policy and opted for more daring tactics like decoding secret messages and detonating exploding cigars. Under the guidance of decorated WWI hero William "Wild Bill" Donovan, the Office of Special Services, the CIA’s predecessor, assembled a motley assortment of agents who set the stage for the Allied armies’ most important missions, like the invasion of North Africa and the storming of Normandy. Through first person narratives from a slew of OSS operatives, O’Donnell explores the thrilling world of spying before satellites and computer hacking boxed agents into cubicles. The WWII OSS hauled hardened criminals out of jail to burgle enemy embassies and culled spies from the Free French who fled to England and North Africa. The sophisticated seductress "Cynthia" used her sex appeal to gather ciphers for breaking Polish, Italian and Vichy codes from high-ranking military men. Elsewhere, Virginia Hall supplied the French Resistance with arms and continually sabotaged the Gestapo while limping with a wooden-leg. The book also chronicles psychological operations by the Allied "Sauerkraut agents" who demoralized German troops by spreading rumors of defeat, disease and desperation. The chapter on the OSS’ covert weapons, like exploding baseballs and umbrella pistols, vividly recalls 007’s pre-mission encounters with "Q." This book is far more than a simple historical survey and reads like a satisfying cloak and dagger yarn, making it a good choice both history and mystery buffs.

From Booklist
O'Donnell, author of two books on U.S. elite units in World War II's European and Pacific theaters, turns to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and as in his previous books, writes from the perspective of the men--and in the OSS, some women--on the front lines. For the OSS, those lines were largely in German-occupied Europe, where operatives gathered intelligence and provided weapons, communications, and leadership to a wide variety of resistance organizations. The danger from the ruthless and frequently effective German forces was great, particularly for the local personnel. So, too, was the risk of being caught in factional quarrels in France and Italy and outright fratricidal slaughter in the Balkans. O'Donnell doesn't denigrate the OSS as do some other historians, who prefer other agencies and services that had turf fights with it throughout the war. Instead, he argues persuasively that the OSS made both material and psychological impacts on European resistance and, through it, on the Germans. Roland Green

Interesting, if a bit superficial
By David W. Nicholas
Patrick O'Donnell has now written three of these books. Each is a collection of oral histories from World War 2, the first following elite units in Europe, the second covering the same ground in the Pacific. This third volume is a collection of oral histories covering the Office of Strategic Services, or OSS, in Europe.
The format is simple. The author collects the histories into a coherent narrative, provides some context, and pads the narrative with some text. The result is a recounting of various campaigns or actions from the ground level, right at the tip of the bayonet.
The difficulty, such as it is, comes from the context. There's nowhere near enough of it. The author (as noted elsewhere) speaks in this book as if the OSS did all or most of the infiltration into France and Germany during WW2, only briefly mentioning the French and British infiltrations that were more prevalent. The author focuses on the American forces, as he did in the previous two books, but here it's a bit more egregious. For one thing, the intelligence world is somewhat murky and indistinct, and its effect on the larger campaigns in the war is, to say the least, controversial. Given that we're not sure how much effect these actions had on the campaigns, the author's presentation is problematic. He tends to take whatever a spy says about the effect of an intelligence coup at face value, and expects the reader to do likewise. This is a bit much, at times.
Other than that, the book does feel a bit incomplete. One reviewer made an unfavorable comparison with M.R.D. Foot's SOE in France (which by the way should never have been allowed to go out of print); this comparison is unfair, as Foot's book was written in the Sixties, and the author had unprecedented access to classified documents and was allowed to interview a great number of people who were then alive. Though it was a great success, Foot's book cause such a controversy that critics succeeded in blocking publications of any further books by Foot or anyone else. O'Donnell's book is nowhere near as comprehensive, and couldn't be, given the differences in the way they were written.
This is a good book, if you understand it's limitations and gee-whiz-look-what-we-did attitude. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

A GRAND SLAM IN STORYTELLING
By Stephen Haas
I bought the book and couldn't put it down after reading it straight through over the weekend. So much of O'Donnell's book contains new information on OSS and WWII. O'Donnell does a masterful job capturing OSS's most important missions and the incredible exploits of these men and women agents most of them untold until now. The narrative style of this book combined with oral history, allows it to read like some of Ambrose's classics like D-Day or Citizen Soldiers. O'Donnell has changed his style compared to his other books yet he still allows the voices of these incredible spies and Special Forces troops to speak

I was really stunned with what OSS did during the war: everything from creating the first SEALS; to blowing up bridges in Greece; to operation CROSS a team of 100 ex-German POWs trained to kill or kidnap Hitler. Some of the best chapters revolve around Greece and the Balkans which have hardly been touched by most historians. Also entertaining was the chapter revolving around spy gadgets created in OSS labs. OSS made everything from umbrella guns to cigarettes that were .22 caliber pistols to something called the "Truth Drug." The missions into Germany itself made my hair stand up in the back of head, especially, the stories from Jewish-American veterans that went back facing almost certain death if they were captured.

This Book is Great
By Mike Horn
Pat O'Donnell has done it again. I read this book from cover to cover in just one day, and I think it's his best work yet. The stories of these real American heroes, told in their own words, really shows the emotions these men and women felt, and the hardships they endured 60 years ago. Most have maintained their vow of silence that long, both out of respect for the work that they did, but also because of some of the bad memories these experiences evoked. Pat O'Donnell got these heroes (no other way to describe them) to open up and relive some of their adventures and missions. The way that Mr. O'Donnell interwove their stories into his book made me wish that I had heard these stories first-hand, or even lived the adventure with them. Mr. O'Donnell has definitely succeeded in his mission to pull us into their world. I can't wait for the next book in his series.

Holy War, Inc.: Inside the Secret World of Osama bin Laden, by Peter L. Bergen

On September 11, 2001, the world changed forever as more than three thousand men, women, and children lost their lives in the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil. The attack was masterminded by Osama bin Laden and his Jihad group -- an organization that CNN's terrorism analyst Peter Bergen calls Holy War, Inc. One of the few Western journalists to have interviewed bin Laden face-to-face, Bergen has produced the definitive book on the global Jihadist network, revealing:

How bin Laden lives, travels, and communicates with his "cells."
How his role in the crushing defeat of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan made him a hero to Muslims all over the world.
How the bombings of the American embassies in Africa and the USS Cole in Yemen were planned and executed.
What we can expect from Islamic extremists in the future.

Above all, Peter Bergen helps us to see bin Laden's organization in a radically new light: as a corporation that has exploited modern technology and weaponry in the service of global terrorism and the destruction of the West.
Both author and publisher will donate a portion of the proceeds from this book to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

From Publishers Weekly
There's a lot of new information in this well-written examination by CNN's terrorism expert on the man believed to be behind the events of September 11, though some of its revelations have already been reported elsewhere in the media. What distinguishes this account is its depth: Bergen has long tracked the Islamic world the book opens with the account of his 1997 interview with bin Laden, the terrorist's first TV interview and it shows. He sheds light on several outstanding questions, arguing, among other things, that it's unlikely Iraq was involved in the September 11 attacks, and that it's a myth that the CIA directly funded and trained bin Laden during the war in Afghanistan in the 1980s. According to Bergen, the CIA gave its money to Pakistan and then let that country's intelligence agency decide what to do with it, which was to fund those they viewed as the most strictly Islamic groups among those opposing the Soviet Union. He also adds some details about bin Laden's rise from his wealthy childhood in Saudi Arabia to his current career, and the global spread of Al Qaeda's terrorizing tentacles. The information on what is known about September 11 added hurriedly after the original manuscript was completed, as Bergen admits gives the book a slightly jagged feel. But those looking for a balanced, comprehensive look at bin Laden and his crew as well as an answer to the now preeminent question "why do they hate us so much?" will do well to start here. (Nov. 13)Forecast: Given the piling up of books about bin Laden, etc., on bestseller lists, it's a foregone conclusion that this will join them, with first serial to Vanity Fair and selection by the major book clubs.

From Library Journal

As CNN terrorism analyst Bergen avows, this journalistic study of Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terrorist network was rushed to publication and thus lacks some editorial smoothness in its delivery. Nevertheless, this book offers a mature, balanced description of bin Laden's background; a concise summary of the organization of the al-Qaeda terrorist network as it has developed in the Middle East, Europe, and America; and a brief narrative of terrorist events through September 11. Bergen asserts that bin Laden's hostility emanates from his religious opposition to an American military presence in Saudi Arabia, American policy toward Israel, and the "un-Islamic" behavior of Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Bergen personalizes his story with an account of his 1997 interview with bin Laden and the contacts he made with bin Laden's militant Islamic associates. Here, an interesting story drifts a bit from bin Laden to accounts of al-Qaeda operations. Bergen has, however, pulled together a significant amount of solid information, which he presents with perception and without grand swings of passion. This is an important initial glimpse of bin Laden, al-Qaeda, and the associated Taliban of Afghanistan and is strongly recommended for all libraries. John F. Riddick, Central Michigan Univ. Lib., Mt. Pleasant

From Booklist
Books rushed out in the wake of historical calamities tend to be a patchwork of sloppy research and poor writing. But Bergen, who spent 10 years reporting on the Islamic world as a producer for CNN, has written a penetrating examination of al-Qaeda, which he compares to a multinational corporation with Osama bin Laden as its CEO. One of the few Westerners to have met bin Laden, Bergen understands radical Islamist movements and their tangled histories. There is extensive reporting here of previous al-Qaeda plots, from the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole last year to bin Laden's possible role in the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993. Bergen discusses the September 11 attacks at length, but what makes this an important book is his history of al-Qaeda, a story most people haven't read in newspapers or magazines. Equal parts harrowing travelogue and social history, this is likely to be the best book on Islamist terror for some time to come. Although it may be impossible to fully understand bin Laden, Bergen does an admirable job of portraying him as a person, not just the face of terrorism. Readers will come away from this book understanding why bin Laden has been successful and how difficult it will be to dismantle his organization of terror. John Green

Keep your cool
By Douglas Picket
This is the ticket if you want reality. But it shows us how evil the terrorist is, how unconscious! These terrorists come to life in this book in that it shows you how they actually do believe in their cause. I now am convinced Laden thinks he is doing gods will, but how he became that way is beyond me. I cannot go into all the details here but you need to read this to understand how the situation came about, there are many facts here, including CIA and USA policies I would never of guessed that left me aware. I want to also recommend another good book like this but also predicted the WTC events and the Bio war and a few other events that have come to pass as well as more predictions. Readable journalistic overview
By Dennis Littrell
If you don't know the difference between al-Qaeda and the Taliban (and before September 11 ‛01, I sure did not) or if you're a little fuzzy about where Yemen is in relation to Afghanistan, this an excellent book. Peter Bergen is CNN's terrorism analyst and an experienced reporter. He uses a wide range of sources including his own experience to describe the al-Qaeda terrorist organization. There's even a map of the Middle East that you can refer to as you read.
But those with some expertise in the world of the mindless jihad masters and the issuance of pretentious fatwas will find this rather limited, I would imagine. We don't really get "Inside the Secret World of Osama bin Laden," but rather are provided with a narrative distilled from numerous news accounts augmented with Bergen's interviews and travel experiences. Essentially, we stay outside the organization (but so did the CIA). Furthermore, Bergen's "Holy War, Inc." characterization of al-Qaeda as a kind of multinational corporation is exactly the sort of catchy, but superficial and misleading designation that irritates the cognoscenti. Al-Qaeda does not turn a profit, nor does it look to turn a profit. It exists on funds raised from charities, from donations from Muslim fat cat businessmen, from bin Laden's inheritance and from funds siphoned from various commercial enterprises, both legal and illegal, and from what it can beg, borrow and steal. It would perhaps be more accurate to designate al-Qaeda as a Mephistophelian service organization. Perhaps "The Black Crescent" would be an appropriate agnomen.
Nonetheless, to Bergen's credit this is not the usual sort of "rush to judgment" volume churned out by book publishers to take advantage of a major news event. Bergen had the book finished in August and apparently was working on the proofs when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center buildings on September 11. At that point of course the book was reshaped and spun to tie in with that event so that Bergen's interview with bin Laden (aired on CNN May 10, 1997) forms part of a Prologue entitled, "How to Find the World's Most Wanted Man."
The strength of the book is in its readability and in the sense that Bergen gives us of what it is like to be an international journalist today (and for those out in the field, it is dangerous to be sure). Characteristically, Bergen describes his trek to and into Afghanistan including the wearing of blindfolds during the last leg to bin Laden's hideout. This personal experience view continues throughout the book and is one of the book's strengths--although of course Bergen does want to make sure we understand that he is more than a "put on the make up and read the cue cards" sort of journalist.
What Bergen notices, and what he reports to us, tell us as much about Bergen as about the world of the terrorist. He reports on the food and what the taxi drivers say. He notices the terrain, the weapons, the dress of the men he meets, and he gives us a good feel for the conditions he and other journalists encounter. What is missing, at least from my point of view, is a cohesive overall understanding or perspective. Perhaps the events are so new, and the trees of the forest so mesmerizingly vivid that it is impossible as yet to discern the larger picture.
But Bergen does attempt a larger understanding. He compares al-Qaeda to the infamous Assassins, founded as an Ismailian sect in what was then Persia in 1090. Supposedly under the influence of hashish, the Assassins brought death and destruction on Christian Crusaders for upwards of two hundred years. (It remains to be seen how long al-Qaeda lasts.) I found it revealing to learn that the head of the Assassins was referred to as "the old man of the mountain" (according to Webster's Second International), just the sort of personage that bin Laden would idolize and try to emulate.
Bergen also attempts a little political philosophy by critiquing Harvard professor Samuel Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" thesis in the Afterward, but not very successfully, I might say, since the tribal and fundamentalist world view of the Taliban and al-Qaeda supporters really is in a monumental collision with Western modernity.
Bottom line: this is a good book, a little superficial and a little thin, but then, so's the news.

Holy War, Inc.
By James Patterson
Peter Bergen's aptly titled book "Holy War, Inc", draws a stunning portrait of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda organization. He depicts al-Qaeda as a multi-national terrorist network, with members everywhere from Egypt and the Philippines to Disney World and the suburbs of London. Bergen takes the reader on a fast-paced journey around the world to try to understand the minds of these Islamic militants.
Bergen's first contention is that Osama bin Laden is grossly misunderstood by the West. Bergen begins by dispelling various rumors circulating around bin Laden. For instance, it was falsely speculated that bin Laden received an engineering degree from an American University, teamed up with Iraq to plot the 1998 African embassy bombings, and was receiving funds from the CIA. The first step Bergen, a journalist by profession, takes to give the reader a clear understanding of bin Laden is to lay out the factual aspects of bin Laden's life.
Bergen argues that it was misunderstanding that led to, what he deems as, countless blunders in U.S. foreign policy, especially the actions of the CIA, with regard to the Muslim world in the 1980s. He does not go as far as to claim that the CIA "created" bin Laden and al-Qaeda, however he does argue that the CIA committed a "significant tactical error" in giving the Pakistani Intelligence Service, the ISI, carte blanche authority over the distribution of about $3 billion to the Afghani resistance against the Soviets. The ISI, according to Bergen, mostly supported anti-Western mujahedin, including Pashtun General Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who is a known associate of bin Laden.
Bergen does an excellent job of conveying the pervasiveness of al-Qaeda throughout the globe. He identifies many members in the United States, including a Disney World Employee, a California undergrad, a military advisor, Boston cab driver, and "several African-Americans." All the while he links the actions and influence of these people, and others on almost every continent, to acts of violence going back to the 1980s, in places including, but not limited to, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tanzania, New York, Egypt, Afghanistan, Yemen, Kashmir, Kenya, and Sudan. Most poignant, is Bergen's small biography of Ali Mohamed, whom is describes as an al-Qaeda "sleeper" who was able to "penetrate one of the U.S. military's most secretive establishments and plot terrorist attacks on American soil."
"Holy War, Inc." does, however, have its shortcoming. In may places the writing seems thrown together and even sloppy at times. Bergen, in his afterword, apologizes saying that the book had to be revised and rushed to press after September 11th. Bergen also often takes the reader on tangent after tangent into everything from the lives of minor characters to camels copulating in the middle of the road. An additional, but perhaps unavoidable, difficulty is the alphabet soup of Muslim names that gets thrown at the reader. Presumably this book is targeted toward a Western audience and an attempt to mitigate the confusion over which Mohammed did what would have been helpful.
Toward the end of the book Bergen attempts to debunk Professor Samuel Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" theory. Bergen rejects Huntington's argument on empirical grounds and maintains that nationalism and power politics are still the best predictors of rivalry in the post-Cold War world. However, his feeble arguments make it grossly obvious that Bergen is a journalist and not a political scholar. He never actually addresses any of Huntington's core arguments, but rather simply lists several loosely interpreted counterexamples.
To finish his book, Bergen recommends several pragmatic steps that the United States needs to take to effectively battle al-Qaeda. First, the United States needs to leave behind its Cold War mentality and rethink everything, especially the employment of military force and the business of intelligence gathering. He argues that our reliance on electronic intelligence is not effective against a man like bin Laden who has stopped using telephones since 1997. Also, the U.S. should not rely as heavily on intelligence from the Pakistani ISI, since many members are sympathetic to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The U.S. should therefore develop more human intelligence sources, specifically recruiting agents from the many rival tribes in Afghanistan, such as the Northern Alliance. Also, the world needs to be ever vigilant with the existing nuclear stockpile to ensure that nuclear material does not find its way into the hands of al-Qaeda. Bergen does not believe the problem would go away if bin Laden were to be killed, however he acknowledges that his organization would "be dealt a severe blow if bin Laden were ushered from the world."
Finally, Bergen argues that the best way to eliminate al-Qaeda is to "shut down permanently the Afghan training camps where the foot soldiers of Holy War, Inc. learn their deadly skills". It is these camps that turn unskilled, undisciplined Arab men into professional terror soldiers. Without the camps the recruits cannot easily learn how to make bombs or organize themselves into cells capable of carrying out elaborate plans.
"Holy War, Inc." is a good book for someone who wants to transcend the pro-Western rhetoric surrounding Osama bin Laden and simply get the straight facts. Peter Bergen's journalist flair allows the reader to take in a heap of information and draw their own conclusions. That is not to say that Bergen does not advocate his own opinions, but he does not allow his personal biases to obscure the facts. An enormous strength of this book is Bergen's in-depth knowledge of his subject matter. He personally travels all over the Muslim world to track down facts and interview key personalities. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning the facts about al-Qaeda , or anyone who would like to get some insight into the inner workings and motivations of Osama bin Laden.

    Amazon.com Review
Communication coach Tony Jeary estimates that we make one hundred presentations every day. He tells readers, "Whether you are talking to a soccer coach or potential client, the way you present your thoughts and ideas to people have a profound effect on the shape of your life." Jeary paves the road to friendly persuasion with theory and practice in Life is a Series of Presentations.

Drawing upon established research in the psychology of influence and neuro-linguistic programming, he guides readers to define their "presentation universe" by using a "3 Dimension" (what-why-how) outline. Although Jeary introduces eight general practices of successful presenters, he shines in describing the practical nuances of presentations including how to: do homework to understand an audience, cut tensions that interfere with rapport, give an audience breathing space, handle hecklers, wrestle stage fright to the ground, and build a presentation arsenal of anecdotes.

A call to self-awareness adds depth to his strategies. For example, one insightful chapter lists eight inhibitors (such as perfectionism, desire to please, aloofness, and good student syndrome) that sabotage presentations. Another section focuses on the anatomy of how to say "thank-you"--and what it communicates about a speaker’s self regard. At times, the chapters suffer from too many theories backing up Jeary’s smart suggestions. But this is an insightful book on how to change someone’s mind. --Barbara Mackoff

    From Publishers Weekly
The title might be a bit of an overstatement, but the basic idea is solid: executive coach Jeary (with the help of media coach Dower and former Doubleday editor Fishman) convincingly points out that presidential elections, careers, fortunes and even lives can hang in the balance between a good presentation and a bad one. This remarkably thorough book extends the art of presentation beyond mere delivery skills to the work of anticipating (and preparing for) the mind of an audience, predicting typical personalities in a crowd (not just hecklers, but also "snipers," "cheerleaders," "vacationers" and "convicts"), and promoting audience involvement. (Jeary himself, aka the trademarked Mr. Presentation, carries a stack of one-dollar bills that he peels off and hands to audience members when they contribute to his talks.) Cognizant that public speaking ranks alongside death and flying as common fears, Jeary stresses rigorous practice and preparation in order to eliminate problems and banish nervousness. Another useful chapter draws upon the work of Dr. Robert Cialdini to outline the six "most successful techniques for influencing people": reciprocation, commitment and consistency, social proof, liking, authority and scarcity. Jeary's book also manages to avoid the stodginess of most Toastmaster guides and public speaking manuals, making this volume a helpful and readable guide to presenting in public.

    Packed with Knowledge!
    By Rolf Dobelli
The book jacket bills author Tony Jeary as "coach to America's top CEOs." It doesn't identify them, but the author clearly has a certain bold presentational style, and stressing his identity as a expert coach could be both a strategic and an educational tactic. The book's content is evergreen, a mixture of hortatory slogans and amusing anecdotes, all designed to make you a better presenter - whether your audience is one listener or an auditorium full of people. The author's advice is, for the most part, solid, detailed, practical and conservative. Don't be too put off by a few dated examples (Bill Clinton and Gary Condit) and if you're pressed for time just read the handy lists of "very important points" that close each chapter. We assure you that you can't waste time reading this book. It's that useful.

It's 1568, and Mary, Queen of Scots, is Queen Elizabeth's captive. Forced to flee Scotland after her husband, Lord Darnley, dies mysteriously, Mary is now a "guest" at Bolton Castle in northern England, where she plots her escape and covertly pursues her claim to her cousin's crown. Rarely have the historical stakes been so high, and rarely has Mistress Ursula Blanchard been caught in such dangerous territory. Herself an illegitimate daughter of King Henry VIII and half sister to Elizabeth, Ursula has served in the past as a lady of the bedchamber and, more important, as a spy for the Queen. Now, Elizabeth once again sends Ursula on a perilous and secret mission. She must carry a confidential message from Elizabeth to Mary, who is a woman of legendary charm and charisma. Will Ursula, too, fall under Mary's spell? Can Ursula trust Mary's promises? Did Mary have her husband killed? Ursula travels north with her young daughter, Meg, and her ward, Penelope Mason. Penelope has disgraced herself at Elizabeth's court, making advances to a married man, and now Ursula must take her young charge to the girl's Yorkshire estate -- located conveniently close to Bolton Castle and Mary -- and help her find a husband. There's no shortage of candidates for the wealthy young woman, but will Penelope become a pawn in the royal chess game? In confronting Mary and her supporters, Ursula discovers that she's inherited more than just her father's royal blood. Surrounded by possible traitors, Ursula must make difficult and poignant choices to serve her Queen and to save herself and those she loves. Set in some of the most turbulent years of English history, "The Fugitive Queen" takesreaders on an enchanting journey filled with authentic period color and riveting suspense. Ursula Blanchard's lively mind and courage make her a heroine to remember in a historical series that ranks with the best.

    From Publishers Weekly
Smooth modern prose with only an occasional "strewth" for period flavor and an ingenious but easy-to-follow plot lift British author Buckley's seventh historical (after 2002's A Pawn for a Queen) to feature Ursula Blanchard, half-sister, confidant and agent of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1568, the queen summons Ursula to court ostensibly because Ursula's ward, Penelope Mason, has been paying too much attention to a married music master. Ursula travels with Penelope to the north of England to find a husband for her ward, but her real mission is to convey a very private verbal message directly to Mary Tudor, formerly Queen of Scots, who's held captive in isolated Bolton Castle. Ursula also seeks to learn what role Mary may have had in the recent mysterious death of her husband, Lord Darnley. Ursula suffers considerable pain, anxiety and concern for her own daughter in the process. Readers familiar with the mineral deposits in Yorkshire will have an advantage in solving one of her problems. Intrigue and suspense reign supreme in another tautly constructed Elizabethan mystery featuring Ursula Blanchard, illegitimate daughter of King Henry VIII and sometime spy for her half-sister, Queen Elizabeth. When the queen summons Ursula to court on the pretext of dismissing Penelope Mason, Ursula's flirtatious young ward, from the royal service, she intuitively senses that Elizabeth has more on her mind than youthful romantic high jinks. Confiding her suspicions about her imprisoned rival, Mary Queen of Scots, Elizabeth charges Ursula with the task of delivering a secret message to Mary. Shortly after Ursula's arrival at Bolton Castle, Mary escapes, Penelope is kidnapped, and Ursula is inextricably drawn into an ever-widening web of danger, deceit, and murder. Ursula must summon all her considerable wit and courage in order to foil an intricately plotted act of high treason. An artfully executed period piece. Margaret Flanagan

A Historical narrative which happens to have a mystery!
    By Gwen Orel
I have read and enjoyed some historical fiction in this period, particularly the Chronicles of Lymond by Dorothy Dunnett, but generally am skeptical of mysteries. So often mystery writers spend a lot of energy deliberately misleading the reader and the payoff ("Oh, it was a red herring") leads to frustration at time wasted.
Not in this case. I picked up this book without realizing it was one in a series and enjoyed it so much I went back and read the first novel (and will be making my way through the rest). The way this book is written, it seems more like a historical novel whose main character is reluctantly involved in a mystery, than a book in which the mystery is the point.
Ursula Blanchard is an engaging, strong, sympathetic woman, and her point of view is sensible and shrewd. All of the minor characters are fully drawn-- including poor man-crazy, plain Penelope who keeps getting into trouble through her romantic nature. I knew this book was going to be good when Penelope's embarassing crush on the music teacher was never explained away-- it really WAS a poor teenage crush (so often something like this would be used as a red herring in which the music teacher was involved in a plot too etc. etc.)
Great sense of menace once Ursula gets to the countryside, but nobody is a cardboard villain.
I read this after having completed a disappointing collection of mystery short stories called "Much Ado about Murder," so Buckley's winning me over is even more impressive as I was skeptical that merely setting something in a historical period could make the story interesting... and of course, it isn't the merely the period that's interesting.
Buckley is a terrific storyteller and Ursual is a wonderful narrator. Really enjoyable in every respect!

Great blend of fact and fiction
    By Valerie Fletcher Adolph
This is the latest in an excellent series of mysteries set in England during the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth. The writer shares a comprehensive understanding of the uneasy political and religious dynamics of the time, as well as life at court and the (very different) life in every-day Elizabethan England.
The plot is well designed and carried through and the characters are well-drawn and memorable. I enjoy the fact that the protagonist is a woman and the viewpoint is feminine rather than masculine. It's all too easy, when writing historical fiction, to gravitate to the masculine, with the hero mounting his steed and dashing off in all directions, with exciting chases and plenty of swashbuckling fights and battles. You'll find a little of that here, but mostly you'll find a woman just trying to do her best for her susceptible young relative and for her queen. It's just that she has an exciting time doing it.
Blending historical fact with dramatic and readable fiction is no easy task but the writer accomplishes it beautifully in this book. You feel the sad magnetism of Mary, Queen of Scots and the dedication and frustration of Sir Francis Knollys, her host and/or jailer.
I found this to be a really good read from a writer who really understands this period in history.

    a journey into Elizabethan times
    By SDRTX
Ursula Blanchard, now Ursula Stannard is back for another adventure of political intrigue. It's not an adventure that she particularly wants. She had given up spying for her half-sister Queen Elizabeth or so she thought. She is sucked back into the antics of court when there is some trouble with Ursula's ward, Penelope Mason. Pen, one of Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting has fallen in love with a married man. Elizabeth is not amused. Elizabeth uses this to have Ursula to go visit Mary Queen of Scots at the northern castle where she is held captive. Ursula does not want to accept her assignment, but much to her surprise her husband Hugh urges her too. She, her daughter Meg, and her ward set out on their journey north. Things do not turn out well when Meg is kidnapped and one of her men is killed. This is the first of mishaps and misadventures that the group faces.
Fiona Buckley skillfully interweaves historical fact and fiction. Ursula Stannard is portrayed as a strong independent woman who can hold her own with any man. Most of the characters are richly drawn and the setting gives you a real sense of time and place. The story line was interesting and kept you reading. Overall, this entry is an entertaining addition to a well-received series.

Travels with Barley: A Journey Through Beer Culture in America (Wall Street Journal Book), by Ken Wells

Do beer yeast rustlers really exist? Who patented the Beer Goddess? How can you tell a Beer Geek from a Beer Nazi? Where exactly is Beervana? Does Big Beer hate Little Beer?Ken Wells, a novelist, Pulitzer Prize finalist, and longtime Wall Street Journal writer, answers these questions and more by bringing a keen eye and prodigious reportage to the people and passions that have propelled beer into America's favorite alcoholic beverage and the beer industry into a $75 billion commercial juggernaut, not to mention a potent force in American culture."Travels with Barley "is a lively, literate tour through the precincts of the beer makers, sellers, drinkers, and thinkers who collectively drive the mighty River of Beer onward. The heart of the book is a journey along the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana, in a quixotic search for the Perfect Beer Joint -- a journey that turns out to be the perfect pretext for viewing America through the prism of a beer glass. Along the river, you'll visit the beer bar once owned by the brewer Al Capone, glide by The World's Largest Six Pack, and check into Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel to plumb the surprisingly controversial question of whether Elvis actually drank beer. But the trip also includes numerous detours up quirky tributaries, among them: a visit to an Extreme Beer maker in Delaware with ambitions to make 50-proof brew, a look at the murky world of beer yeast rustlers in California, and a journey to the portals of ultimate beer power at the Anheuser-Busch plant in St. Louis, where making the grade as a Clydesdale draft horse is harder than you might imagine. Entertaining, enlightening, and written with Wells's trademark verve, "Travels with Barley" is a perfect gift -- not just for America's 84 million beer enthusiasts, but for all discerning readers of flavorful nonfiction.

    From Publishers Weekly
Thoreau said, "The tavern will compare favorably with the church." Following this premise rather closely, longtime Wall Street Journal writer and novelist Wells (Junior's Leg) searches for his preferred house of worship: the "perfect beer joint." Setting out to follow the Mississippi River, Wells writes, "I would begin in Minnesota among folk who, geographically speaking, are practically Canadians and by reputation descended from good beer-drinking Swedes and Germans. I would slide down soon enough into the Great Beer Belly of America, for, by lore at least, Midwesterners are presumed to be the mightiest of U.S. beer drinkers." Full of profundities ("One thing you can say about lagers: the good ones don't make you work very hard to like them"), the book also lends historical, scientific and cultural insights into the $75 billion industry—from the likes of beer behemoths like Budweiser to newfangled Extreme Beer, which has bottle values comparable to fine Bordeaux. Along the way, Wells encounters quirky characters, and the pages he devotes to describing brewers, bar proprietors, bartenders and plain ol' beer drinkers prove he's more interested in beer people (84 million Americans drink beer) than the industry itself. Wells's storytelling abilities complement his journalist's eye for stats and facts, making this a humorous, lively and informational tour.

This account of journeys through the soft beer belly of America exudes that expansive happiness that springs from a guy who is truly enjoying his bottle of brew. Wells, a Wall Street Journal reporter, has crisscrossed the U.S., visiting breweries and bars to find out just what makes beer the nation's leading adult beverage. In the wake of the "lager wars" that drove so many midsize breweries to extinction in the late twentieth century, Wells finds newly prospering microbreweries. He visits the deceptively down-market Flora-Bama Lounge on the Gulf Coast to find out how it maintains its record consumption levels. He travels the length of the Mississippi to assess the heartland's appetite for brewskis. Wells delves into the history of the giant breweries such as Anheuser-Busch with its trademark Clydesdale draft horses and Miller with its phenomenally successful campaign to encourage that quaffing of "light" beer. As one would expect from a reporter of his background, Wells focuses his eye less flatteringly on the economic, social, and political role of beer, whose powerful lobbyists jealously guard industry prerogatives. Great idea, mediocre execution
    By Thomas Reiter
I have borrowed the title for this review from another reviewer, who I completely agree with.

First, the book is fairly entertaining and has a lot of info about beer, the beer industry, the popularity of home-brewing, etc.

That said, the book suffered from the following major flaws:

    1) the author was supposedly seeking to find the "perfect beer joint" and drove down the Mississippi from Minnesota to New Orleans to conduct this search. Actually this "search" was totally perfunctory and uninspired--he essentially drove to a new town every day, stopped in one or two bars, usually in the middle of the day when no one was around, asked the same question ("what is the perfect beer joint?" to whoever he happened to bump into there, and then moved on to the next town. Often the people he met said things like "you have to come back tomorrow to go to bar x or meet person y", but no matter, he was on an expense-account determined schedule and would leave the next morning for the next day's tedious "adventure". I didn't count, but it sounds like in the course of this "search" he went into maybe half a dozen bars at night, on a weekend, where you might have any expectation of finding something interesting to write about.

    2) While I can't say that the book is dry or overly boring, it is almost completely devoid of actual humour, which I found difficult to believe. When you're writing about beer, bars, and drunks, it seems inevitable that some pretty funny stuff would creep in, but such is not the case.

CONCLUSION: This book was evidently conceived and executed as a quicky, check-the-box type of exercise rather than a true labor of love. This is a book that begs to be written by someone like Bill Bryson.

A Smooth Ride on the River of Beer
    By JJ the Beer Guy
Wells is smooth writer with a good sense of humor and a talent for telling a good story. I'll admit I'm what he calls a beer geek but you don't have to be a beer geek to enjoy this book. He ambles down the Mississippi River searching for The Perfect Beer Joint but he finds some nice slices of the real America along the way. His encounters with various "Beer Goddesses" are pretty hilarious. He peels off the river and discovers a place called Beervana and people who spend their free time poaching beer yeast. The book is full of good travel writing. And if you do like beer and are interested in the subject, this is a great book to get up to speed on beer in America as it stands today. Wells is a real reporter and the book is filled with stats and observations but never in a dull way. You'll learn about the evolution of the beer joint, why Budweiser rules American beer and why the Mayflower REALLY landed at Plymouth Rock.

    Chapter One: Begin the Journey

I am a cardiac psychologist. For nearly twenty-five years I have been helping people recover from heart disease by teaching them and their loved ones how to contend with the emotional ravages of the illness. This book is the fruit of countless hours I've spent with thousands of heart patients and their families -- men and women like you, with loved ones like yours. My message will knock your life back onto its feet because I'm going to tell you something about heart disease you may not have known before: it's not the severity of the illness but how you cope with it that will determine how long you will live and how happy you will be. Not only can you survive heart disease, you can actually thrive with it for many, many years. In fact, if you cope well and follow the advice I give you in this book, you can live as long as you would if you didn't have the illness.

That's right: you can live as long as you would if you didn't have the illness. And you can lead a full and vibrant life, a life of challenge and discovery. You don't have to live like an invalid, propped up in a corner of the couch while your days diminish into a series of bland, limited routines. You don't have to tiptoe through your nights and days, anxious that a backfiring truck or a spin on the dance floor will throw you into the hospital with a heart attack. And you don't have to suffer from New Age guilt because you couldn't swallow the diet of the month or stick with the latest exercise fad.

What you do have to do is acknowledge the gift you've received: the infinite bounty of a second chance. The fact that you are holding this book and reading these words confirms your place among the privileged, the lucky ones who got the wake-up call, resisted the urge to slam the snooze button, and chose to embark on the journey toward a newly conscious life. Because living with heart disease is a journey -- a journey forward toward the healthy life you were meant to live, not back to the one you were living when the illness struck. It's a journey you take one moment at a time -- breakfast by breakfast and conversation by conversation, embrace by embrace and, yes, conflict by conflict. It's a journey you'll be taking for the rest of your life -- which, I remind you, can be a long, long time -- and the people who love you the most get to come with you.

That's the thing that astonishes so many of my patients: the degree to which their illness is a family affair. Heart disease can cause a seismic shift in even the most stable relationships, rattling a family's foundation and leaving its members shaky and grim. It's always unsettling but worst when the illness strikes without warning, which happens more often than you might think: All known cardiac risk factors combined account for only three out of four cases of heart illness -- the others are attributed to unknown causes.

If you are like most heart patients, your notion of normal changed forever the instant heart disease invaded your world. Suddenly, nothing was the same for you or your family, and everything ended in a question mark:

    • Am I going to die?

    • Why did this happen to me?

    • What happens now?

    • How will we manage?

    • Will things ever be the same?

You all probably have had to deal with unfamiliar people (doctors, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, technicians), unfamiliar places (hospitals, waiting rooms), and unpleasant experiences (procedures, tests, surgery). How you manage these experiences -- as a patient and as a family -- will determine the quality of your life and how long you hold on to it. Thriving with heart disease isn't only about a muscle, it's also about how you manage your emotions, your attitude, and the intricate web of human connections, secure and tenuous, that bind you to the people you love and interact with.

And thriving doesn't stop with family relationships: the way a patient interacts with others can determine how long and happily he or she will live. A married loner with no close friends, few acquaintances, and a not-very-serious heart condition may never recover fully, while a quiet person who lives alone but has vibrant friendships and cordial family relations may resume an active life even after a whopper of a heart attack.

That's what pulled Rena and Tom through: strong family relations. The topography of their marriage had changed forever three years earlier, when Rena suffered a myocardial infarction, or heart attack.

Tom stands well over six feet tall, weighs about 230 pounds, and has one of those steel gray crew cuts that makes some men look like unusually mature marines. They had come to my office to talk about how they as a couple were living with heart disease. As Tom rose from the waiting room chair, he offered a large, open hand to Rena. I was struck by her presence; her handshake was as firm as her gaze. Tom spoke first:

"It was simple: I knew Rena was going to die. I was so frightened of losing her, I didn't even allow myself to think she might pull through. I just wanted to try to prepare myself for the worst, so if it happened, it wouldn't be a complete shock.

"In the hospital, I just waited and waited for her to open her eyes. I kept wondering, why did this happen? Rena's family didn't have heart problems. I thought it must be a mistake, that they'd made the wrong diagnosis. The kids came every day, they took off from work...we surrounded each other with love; that's how we got through.

"Rena made it over the first hurdle -- she got out of the hospital. Then we had another surprise -- coming home. Boy, those first few months were a shock. At first I tried to do everything -- the cooking, the laundry, the marketing, everything. Then, later on, I slowly let her take over, little by little."

Now Rena looked up and began to speak:

"The first six months were the worst. Some mornings I'd wake up not caring about anything. One day, I didn't even fix my hair. I remember thinking I must be losing my grip; I'd always paid attention to my appearance. But I figured, what's the difference? I wasn't going anywhere, no one was going to see me except Tom.

"I also worried that I couldn't rely on my body anymore. One day I needed a blanket up in the linen closet, and I was afraid to get up on a step stool to get it down. I thought I'd lose my balance and fall -- off a step stool, for goodness' sake! So I sat down on the floor and cried for half an hour.

"And then there were the panic attacks. Whenever something felt different in my chest area I immediately thought, oh, no, something's happening -- another artery is blocking up, and I'm going to end up in an ambulance. For a few months, I was a nervous wreck.

"Tom and the kids were very worried about me. They didn't let me do anything, even things I wanted to do. One Sunday I got it in my head I wanted to clean out the pantry. It was the first time in weeks I'd felt like doing anything, and it made me happy. The kids were over that day, and, well, they wouldn't let me do it. The more I insisted, the more they fought me. I finally gave up and went to lie down, and Tom and the kids cleaned out the pantry. It took me three weeks to find the oregano because they put stuff back in the wrong place.

"Here they were, trying to spare me from stress and causing me so much aggravation I had to go lie down. I loved them for all they were doing, but I knew I could do more than they thought I could -- especially everyday, normal things."

As Rena and Tom learned, the future is seldom determined at the hospital. The vast majority of heart patients' futures develop gradually, like photographs in processing solution, as they return home and get back to normal -- a normal that may be a far cry from what they knew before. And that's precisely the point: when heart illness strikes, a person must abandon the well-trodden path he or she used to follow, blaze a trail, and begin a journey toward a new way of living. Heart disease is an invitation to create a different way of life -- a new normal -- that heals the heart by tending emotions and mending human connections.

As Tom put it, "We've been married for over forty-two years. We've grown up a lot in that time, and we're still growing. Living with this illness has taught us to keep things in perspective, to be more flexible, and to pay attention to each day we have together. When you do that, life gets better. You know how, early in marriage, sex is such a big deal? I still love sex; it's great. But intimacy is greater."

    Starting the Journey

Living long and well with heart disease is like driving cross-country to get home for Thanksgiving: it's a long haul, but the party will be a lot better if you're part of it (also, once you're on the road, you'll realize you're not the only one out there). You'll have long stretches where you fly along, making great progress, but you'll also hit detours and obstacles that make you wonder if you'll ever arrive.

I promise: you can and will arrive if you follow the program in this book, which places in your hands the same tools and techniques my patients receive at the Wake Forest University Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Your program starts now, as you open your mind and embrace two fundamental truths: first, that recovery is a journey you'll be taking for the rest of your life, not a signpost you rolled past when you left the hospital. And second, that heart illness will challenge you and the people close to you to open yourselves to one another as never before -- even when you feel incapable of a civil "good morning" -- and you must rise to the challenge and do it.

I know you can do it because I've watched others do it time and time again. Heart patients are my life's work, and this book is the crystallization of my commitment to you, your family, and your future. For many years I have wished I could hand my patients a talisman, a potent object that would keep them from harm and protect them from despair. This book is that talisman, a gift of hope...

"Thriving With Heart Disease" is a very informative book that every heart patient should have in their arsenal. It really is "right on" in terms of the emotional aspects a heart attack poses not only for the patient but also the patient's family. In addition, it poses possible ways of dealing with issues that are all part of the recovery process. I highly recommend it!

After discovering I had heart disease & undergoing a stent procedure, then a open heart surgery, I needed a book that dealt with the emotional side of heart surgery. This book answered my questions.
