A bit disappointing--glad I didn't pay full price!
By M. Tycer
Buying test books can really add up--so I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this, especially considering what you get! There are lots of errors especially in the self-grading section, and from a big expensive company like Kaplan, I expect a LOT more. The tests are also not that hard and I've heard from other people that Kaplan's practice tests aren't as hard as the real MAT--they felt underprepared. The good thing is it does have a pretty good study guide section and has a bunch of practice tests!

I also bought Barron's version, and was much more impressed--the tests were harder and it doesn't seem to have the many errors that Kaplan's has.

MAT review
By Ed
Good book, a little too basic if you are aiming for the 99th percentile, add Sternberg and Budd for completeness. Good art and literature section, good vocabulary list. Inadequate for history. Do all the practice tests, pace yourself during the exam, it's difficult but you will do better than you think.

Good but watch out for errors
By A Customer
This is good book to use as a review and to take practice tests but there are errors. I have found several. It usually pertains to the letter given as the correct anwser; Example page 35 #2. There are others like this so watch very closely when grading your test.

The Deceivers: Allied Military Deception in the Second World War, by Thaddeus Holt

In World War II, the Allies employed unprecedented methods and practiced the most successful military deception ever seen, meticulously feeding misinformation to Axis intelligence to lead Axis commanders into erroneous action. Thaddeus Holt's elegantly written and comprehensive book is the first to tell the full story behind these operations. Exactly how the Allies engaged in strategic deception has remained secret for decades. Now, with the help of newly declassified material, Holt reveals this secret to the world in a riveting work of historical scholarship.

Once the Americans joined the war in 1941, they had much to learn from their British counterparts, who had been honing their deception skills for years. As the war progressed, the British took charge of misinformation efforts in the European theater, while the Americans focused on the Pacific. The Deceivers takes readers from the early British achievements in the Middle East and Europe at the beginning of the war to the massive Allied success of D-Day, American victory in the Pacific theater, and the war's culmination on the brink of an invasion of Japan.

Colonel John Bevan, who managed British deception operations from London, described the three essentials to strategic deception as good plans, double agents, and codebreaking, and The Deceivers covers each of these aspects in minute detail. Holt brings to life the little-known men, British and American, who ran Allied deception, such as Bevan, Dudley Clarke, Peter Fleming, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and Newman Smith. He tracks the development of deception techniques and tells the hitherto unknown story of double agent management and other deception through the American FBI and Joint Security Control.

Full of fascinating sources and astounding revelations, The Deceivers is an indispensable volume and an unparalleled contribution to World War II literature.

From Publishers Weekly
This colossal and valuable study is clearly a labor of love for Holt, a lawyer and former deputy secretary of the army. It chronicles in thorough detail and smooth prose various operations that the Allies conducted to mislead the Axis as to the time, place, strength and direction of a host of military operations. The foremost of those was, of course, D-Day, and the origins, conduct and imposing logistics of Operation Fortitude are laid out in unsurpassed detail. So are a host of smaller operations, such as Operation Mincemeat, the subject of the book The Man Who Never Was The men and women behind the planning and execution included the British career soldier Brig. Dudley W. Clarke; Gordon Merrick, later the author of The Lord Won't Mind and its successors, one of the first mainstream successes in gay fiction; and actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who was an amateur sailor and leader of a fine decoy effort in southern France. The achievements of the deceivers were invaluable if not always decisive. Few of them have been chronicled this completely or this well, at least for American readers, in a volume that reads with the fluency of a thriller for any reader with a minimal knowledge of and interest in the war.

Review
"As close to definitive as we are soon likely to see. Should serve intelligence and defense communities as a bible." -- The Sewanee Review

"Compelling...fascinating...well-researched. This tour de force is a must read. Make[s] the reader a captive from page one." -- Army Magazine, June 2004

"The Deceivers...creates an authoritative history of wartime deception, rich with details....[Holt's] fascinating account is unlikely to be bettered." -- London Times, Times Literary Supplement, July 23, 2004

"The war’s story appears in an entirely different light when overlaid with the various deception plans...Highly recommended." -- Library Journal, March 2004

Absorbing . . . just the thing for military-intelligence buffs and students of WWII history. -- Kirkus Reviews, February 15, 2004

From the Inside Flap
"Thad Holt has written a brilliant account of Allied military deceptions in World War II. It will become a standard work on military intelligence tactics. And best of all, it reads like a novel!" -- Joseph S. Nye, Jr. Dean of the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

"Mr. Holt's history of Allied deception in World War II is definitive. He has trawled through all the documentation, interviewed all the survivors, and put together a history as comprehensive as it is readable and entertaining. It is an astonishing achievement, and no library of the war can afford to be without it." -- Professor Sir Michael Howard former Regius Professor of Modern History, Oxford University, Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History, Yale University, and author of British Intelligence in the Second World War: Volume 5, Strategic Deception

"Thaddeus Holt has given us a riveting history of the Allied deception operations in World War II. The British were especially masterful -- the sphinxlike and sardonic Dudley Clarke and his colleagues had a huge hand in the victory. Far more dramatic than any fiction." -- R. James Woolsey Director of Central Intelligence, 1993-95

"Just when you have convinced yourself that you have long ago imbibed the last word on the secret side of World War II, along comes Thaddeus Holt and his remarkable study. Superbly researched and full of fresh revelations, The Deceivers is not only immaculately written but wonderfully readable." -- Robert Cowley founding editor of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History

"A highly professional yet entertaining analysis of the dirty tricks ingeniously dreamed up by unscrupulous Allied intelligence personnel in World War II to defeat the enemy. Easily the best book yet written, or ever likely to be, on the subject, drawing on the most recent documents declassified on both sides of the Atlantic." -- Nigel West author of MI5, MI6, and Seven Spies Who Changed the World

"A truly wonderful book! Deeply researched and written with authority and verve, it tells the full story of Allied deception during World War II. The Deceivers not only recounts every major operation, it describes in detail how each operation affected the enemy. It will be essential for the bookshelf of every serious student of World War II." -- Ernest May Charles Warren Professor of History, Harvard University

"Thaddeus Holt's The Deceivers is an important contribution...the least that can be said about the book is that for the next several decades it should serve intelligence and defense communities as a bible about how to deceive an enemy in wartime....The finished product is as close to definitive as we are likely to see....Holt's narrative line will hold the reader's attention, carrying him through the occasional dense patches to leave him astounded by the end result. Invariably that result is a much more thorough knowledge for any reader about what was actually taking place at any particular moment during World War II." -- The Sewanee Review, Winter 2004

"[A] monumental history. Holt fully reveals Allied attempts to "mystify, mislead, and surprise" the enemy, while identifying the intelligence failures, the successes and the many operations whose decisiveness remains unclear even today. The level of detail is staggering. Holt has provided us with a historical record. And this he does this definitively." -- The Washington Post

Military Deception's Best Reference!
By C. M. Shook
I have read several books on military deception over the years as part of my (USAF) professional education studies. I found Holt's book to be the definitive work that surpasses all others. The detail and depth of his coverage of WW2 deception is incredible, yet reads like a good fiction. In addition, his coverage of HOW TO perform military deception, and what NOT to do, is the best seen. A must read for the professional military officer and just great history!

Heavy Going
By JR Dunn
This is a strange piece of work. Holt kicks things off with a chapter extolling British general Dudley Clarke as World War II's master of deception without bothering to explain why he merits that status.

The book proceeds with a lengthy, minutely detailed record of virtually every deception operation carried out by the Allies, covering who was involved (and sometimes who wasn't), who came up with what idea and how, what resources were used, where they got them, how they got them where they were needed, at times down to the point of how the desks were arranged at headquarters, all without a single effort made to relate any of this frantic activity to the progress of the war at large or, for that matter, any external events whatsoever. An endless parade of odd operational names trundles by one after the other with no context, and, for the majority of readers, no meaning. Anyone coming to this book without a solid previous knowledge of the war would be completely lost. Beyond that, divorcing the strategic deception story from the war's larger context undercuts Holt's argument that deception was a crucial element to Allied victory, an argument I would have thought could be made with all the difficulty of falling off a chair.

"The Deceivers" is a pure example of the streetcar-transfer school of history, a historian getting so bogged down in the minutiae of his field of interest that he forgets there's a world out there. Compare this to David Kahn's masterly "Hitler's Spies" and "The Codebreakers", both dealing with closely related topics, both examplars of the historian's art.

The culmination of a lifetime’s work in character education from one the preeminent psychologists of our time, this landmark book gives us the tools we need to raise respectful and responsible children, create safe and effective schools, and build the caring and decent society in which we all want to live.

From Publishers Weekly
In his timely follow-up to the definitive Educating for Character, Lickona plucks the burden of moral corruption from society at large and plants it squarely in the laps of parents and teachers. He describes a society nearly bereft of character, and proposes that the solution is to awaken children's social consciences. Through a series of grim statistics and anecdotes from his research as a psychologist and educator, Lickona illuminates a culture that is lost (but not hopelessly), due largely to an overemphasis on academic achievement in lieu of formal character education. "The disturbing behaviors that bombard us daily-violence, greed, corruption, incivility, drug abuse, sexual immorality, and a poor work ethic-have a common core: the absence of good character." He defines 10 essential virtues that comprise good character and prescribes a six-part remedy, including modeling virtuous behavior, building a strong home-school partnership and getting involved with communities. Quotes from Aristotle, Martin Luther King Jr. and others make more eloquent points for why character matters, but the author's passion for creating a more civil and harmonious world is evident and inspiring. Lickona admits that changing the moral fiber of an entire generation is a lofty goal and that his solutions are ambitious: "The social-moral problems that beset our society have deep roots and require systematic solutions." However, this book can be one small step along that path, if it finds its way into the right hands.

Hal Urban author of Life's Greatest Lessons Our job as parents and teachers is to bring out the best in our kids. This marvelous book can be of immeasurable help.

Dr. Stephen R. Covey author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People What an absolutely marvelous book! Greatly needed in restoring the character ethic in a techno/materialistic-obsessed world. Character is primary greatness; prestige is secondary greatness. Extremely valuable practical resource for every parent and teacher. Great gift book.

Please read this book!
By Reba
I wish this book would be required reading for every school administrator, teacher, and parent. I have been a public school educator for 25 years. I am also a parent and a grandparent.

I found this book to be extremely refreshing in a time where "No Child Left Behind" has taken us too far in the wrong direction. Yes, we want to set high academic expectations for our children and yes, we do want accountability. But what good are high test scores if there is more cheating, dishonesty, cynicism, and disrespect for others? This book, along with many others on Character Education, is a call back to common sense in education: Let's not only raise our expectations for academic achievement, but also for honesty, integrity, responsibility, work ethic, and respect for others. The current NCLB legislation (with its emphasis on high stakes testing) has taken the focus away from educating the whole child. Current education research shows this is not best practice; this is not in the best interest of the child or of our society! This book provides inspiration and hope for educating the whole child. It provides many practical suggestions and ideas for making our homes, schools, and communities a much more civil place to live and learn. If educators, legislators, and parents would read this book and put it's ideas into practice, we would be making a positive difference!

A+ for Thomas Lickona
By Amanda P.
As a graduate student going into the field of school counseling, I found this book extremely interesting and useful. Of all the books I have been assigned to read for classes, this one is by far the best. The ideas and activities Thomas Lickona has come up with for building character and morality in students is phenominal. His ideas are so creative yet simple at the same time. They are also realistic and very diverse for all ages. If you are in the field of education, a parent, or someone just interested in this topic, this book is a MUST! I believe if all educators looked at character education the way Thomas Lickona does we could make a positive difference in our children today.

A Hanging Offense: The Strange Affair of the Warship Somers, by Buckner Melton

Mutiny on the Bounty is one of history's greatest naval stories -- yet few know the similar tale from America's own fledgling navy in the dying days of the Age of Sail, a tale of mutiny and death at sea on an American warship. In 1842, the brig-of-war Somers set out on a training cruise for apprentice seamen, commanded by rising star Alexander Mackenzie. Somers was crammed with teenagers. Among them was Acting Midshipman Philip Spencer, a disturbed youth and a son of the U.S. Secretary of War. Buying other crew members' loyalty with pilfered tobacco and alcohol, Spencer dreamed up a scheme to kill the officers and turn Somers into a pirate ship. In the isolated world of a warship, a single man can threaten the crew's discipline and the captain's authority. But one of Spencer's followers warned Mackenzie, who arrested the midshipman and chained him and other ringleaders to the quarterdeck. Fearing efforts to rescue the prisoners, officers had to stay awake in round-the-clock watches. Steering desperately for land, sleep-deprived and armed to the teeth, battling efforts to liberate Spencer, Somers's captain and officers finally faced a fateful choice: somehow keep control of the vessel until reaching port -- still hundreds of miles away -- or hang the midshipman and his two leading henchmen before the boys could take over the ship. The results shook the nation. A naval investigation of the affair turned into a court-martial and a state trial and led to the founding of the Naval Academy to provide better officers for the still-young republic. Mackenzie's controversial decision may have inspired Herman Melville's great work Billy Budd. The story of Somersraises timeless questions still disturbing in twenty-first-century America: the relationship between civil and military law, the hazy line between peace and war, the battle between individual rights and national security, and the ultimate challenge of command at sea.

This coherent and absorbing study from Melton (The First Impeachment) is the first full-scale study of the "mutiny" aboard the U.S.S. Somers in nearly a generation. The brig Somers was on a training cruise in 1842, with more than 100 apprentice seamen aboard. The son of the secretary of war, 19-year-old Philip Spencer, began talking and writing wildly about leading a mutiny. When the captain, Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, had Spencer and his two confederates, Cromwell and Small, put in irons, several incidents occurred suggesting attempts to rescue the men. After consulting with his officers and petty officers, Mackenzie decided that in view of the "clear and present danger" of a bloody mutiny, he should hang the three suspects, and did. The Navy conducted a formal inquiry into Mackenzie's conduct, then brought him before a court-martial. Melton, professor of law at the University of North Carolina, does his best to render the ensuing legal thickets intelligible to the 21st-century lay reader, without complete success. Better are his accounts of where the Somers affair fits into maritime history and the manner in which the isolation of the sailing ship made the captain's power nearly absolute. His final verdict is similar to that of the 19th-century Navy: Mackenzie exceeded his authority, but not wantonly or frivolously, and Spencer was a clear-cut and dangerous sociopath. Equal traces of eloquence and purple prose in saying so may appeal to post-Patrick O'Brien-era maritime buffs.

From Booklist
In 1842, the U.S. Navy was a relatively small and primitive fighting force, especially compared to the British navy. Most crewmen were very young, poorly educated boys; officers were often poorly trained. Melton, a historian and professor of law at the University of North Carolina, offers a fascinating account of a simple training cruise that went terribly wrong, resulting in mutiny, executions, and a sensational court martial. At the center of this drama were two interesting but flawed men: Phillip Spencer, a 19-year-old midshipman who was bright and charismatic but mentally unstable, and Captain Alexander Mackenzie, a well-bred, vastly experienced seaman with a generally affable nature but a knack for getting into controversial situations. His efforts to cope with the blatant disobedience of Spencer and others who supported him led to tragedy and an eventual reassessment of naval training and shipboard procedures. This is a superbly written story that captures both the routine and the rising tension within the insular society of a warship. Jay Freeman

David W. Shaw Author of The Sea Shall Embrace Them: The Tragic Story of the Steamship Arctic In this well-researched and faithful account of the attempted mutiny aboard the brig Somers in 1842, Buckner F. Melton, Jr., brings to light a little-known chapter of maritime history. The book is rich in detail and compelling, a blend of high-seas adventure and legal drama. -- Review

Excellent story! While trying to prevent a mutiny in 1842, Commander Alexander Mackenzie, of the US war ship "Sommers" hung a few of the mutinous sailors. The decision was abnormally intensified and complicated since Commander Mackenzie was a rising star in the officer ranks and one of the sailors hung was Midshipman Philip Spencer, son of the Secretary of War!! Not going to look good on the Commander's resume! Awesome story in itself, to choose what to do and the search for who were the main mutineers. It even gets better! Upon returning to the US, an expected uproar in the national press occurred. A major trial ensued to find if Commander Mackinzie had followed proper procedures and hung the correct sailors. The O.J. trial to the third power! Was it Mackenzie's turn to get the noose, be exonerated, or have his career virtually ended!

A credible account of an incredible event
By Bruce Trinque
Could there be a more preposterous, overly melodramatic fictional plot than a scenario where during a peacetime cruise a commanding naval officer deliberately puts to death without trial a junior subordinate officer, a subordinate who just happens to be the son of a member of the President's Cabinet? Yet, of course, that is no fictional plot, but exactly what happened aboard the USS Somers in 1842 when Commander Alexander Slidell Mackenzie hanged Acting Midshipman Philip Spencer, the son of the serving Secretary of War, and two other men for reputedly planning a mutiny to kill the other ship's officers and carry the brig off into a career of piracy. Ever since, questions linger. Was young Spencer's plot merely a bizarre fantasy, or did he really plan to kill his captain and the other senior officers? Was Mackenzie justified in sidestepping normal procedure to hang men without trial, or did he and his fellow officers succumb to panic and execute innocent men? The Somers, of course, was not wholly a typical man-of-war on the voyage in question, and that was perhaps a vital element in the background to the mutiny (or whatever it was) and its aftermath. Except for the handful of officers and a small cadre of experienced seamen, almost the entire crew of the brig was composed of youths fresh off training ships, sent to sea on the Somers to gain practical experience. As such, they were perhaps more vulnerable to the blandishments of an erratic midshipman than seasoned sailors would have been. Yet, it was two of the experienced hands who were hanged along with young Spencer, one protesting his innocence and the other apparently conceding his guilt. A vital element of the circumstances was that the Somers carried no marines, the usual bulwark against a mutinous crew. The tale did not end with Mackenzie's suppression of unrest aboard his ship. His actions would have certainly been questioned in any case, but the fact that Spencer's father was Secretary of War guaranteed that Mackenzie would be charged with illegal, murderous behavior. Inevitably, a court-martial followed.
Buckner Melton, Jr., a law professor at the University of North Carolina and author of a book last year about the mysterious machinations of Aaron Burr on the Western frontier in the early Nineteenth Century, has just published "A Hanging Offense: The Strange Affair of the Warship Somers." It's a solid account of the affair written in a lively style aiming to capture the atmosphere - social, political, and physical - surrounding the events. He takes special care to describe the particular world of a naval warship during the Age of Sail and the unique power and responsibilities of a commanding officer, and in general he is successful in this. I must note, however, one small slip that caused me to frown. In describing the Somers, he mentions her armament: 32-pounders, more powerful than any land field artillery and longer ranged too. The brig's 32-pounders, however, were carronades whose short barrels also made them short ranged, despite their ability to inflict severe damage at close quarters. A 32-pound carronade was credited with a range of 1087 yards at a 5 degree elevation. The standard US Army 1841 6-pounder smoothbore field artillery piece had a range of 1500 yards at that same 5 degrees elevation. Leaving that largely irrelevant detail aside, Melton's account gives a satisfactory picture of this world-in-miniature that was so violently disrupted by these controversial events. He is quite evidently sympathetic to Commander Mackenzie's plight, and I believe he is right in finding insights into young Spencer's behavior by looking at much-publicized school violence incidents in recent years. From Columbine to the Somers may not be an overly long step.
In short, I find Melton's portrayal of the events and personalities to be persuasive. As he himself acknowledges in an epilogue, there can be no final answers to the questions raised, but I believe that Melton has come about as close as we can ever expect.

Fascinating Historical True Crime Saga
By Brian D. Rubendall
Buckner F. Melton Jr.'s "A Hanging Offense" is a fascinating work of narrative history that resurrects an important but little-remembered incident from the early days of the U.S. Navy. The U.S.S. Somers, one of the last sailing vessles to be commissioned by the navy, was on a routine training cruise when a near mutiny broke out, resulting in the hanging of three of her crew. The story of the voyage is both hair raising and heartbreaking, particularly considering that two of the three hanged were very young men.
The would be mutineers were led by midshipman-in-training Phillip Spencer, the troubled son of a U.S. Cabinet Official who pulled the strings that got his son the post. Spencer almost immediately began conspiring with members of the crew to kill the officers and turn the ship into a pirate vessle. His plan was ultimately thwarted when he was double-crossed by a crewman he took into his confidence. The tragedy caused a sensation back in the U.S., resulting in the well publicized court marshal of Captain Alexander Mackenzie. It also exposed the many flaws endemic to the navy at the time, and ultimately resulted in much needed reforms, most particularly the establishment in 1845 of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.
All of this Melton recounts with his highly readable prose. He details the life of Phillip Spencer, who most likely suffered from a personality disorder that caused many of his actions. Melton's accounts of the attempted mutiny itself read like the most suspenseful fiction. The lengthy aftermath describes the legal proceedings that ultimately exonerated Mackenzie, despite the political machinations of Phillip Spencer's father. As a professor of law, Melton also explains the finer legal points of the case in considerable detail. The book is a lively and relatively brief at about 260 pages of narrative.
Overall, an excellent work of narrative history that will appeal most strongly to maritime buffs.

Roland of Gilead's quest to save all worlds from evil continues in this fifth installment of King's epic tale, which finds the gunslinger and his companions helping the farmers of Calla Bryn Sturgis fight against the terrifying "Wolves" who threaten to kidnap the Calla's children. Joining them is Father Callahan, who first appeared in King's second book, 'Salem's Lot (1975). Using a low, gruff voice that only Clint Eastwood could equal, Guidall aptly captures Roland's rough-edged character, but it's often difficult to distinguish between the tenors he employs for the book's many male characters. Andy the robot, however, is one character that listeners won't confuse with the others. Wise-guy gunslinger Eddie might compare Andy to Star Wars' C3PO, both in his "complacent, slightly prissy voice" and his lanky, mechanical appearance, but avid listeners will find that the tone Guidall adopts for Andy more closely resembles that of the beloved 1980s toy Speak & Spell. In the afterword, King thanks the narrator of the first four Dark Tower novels, Frank Muller, whose debilitating motorcycle accident in 2001 prevented him from finishing the series. "[A]udio insists you absorb everything," King notes, and in Muller's absence, Guidall does a fine job of bringing this epic tale to life.--udio insists you absorb everything," King notes, and in Muller's absence, Guidall does a fine job of bringing this epic tale to life.

From Booklist
Wizard and Glass (1997), volume 4 of King's massive, postapocalyptic, chivalrized western, The Dark Tower, was rather a snooze, not for lack of action but because it was primarily a flashback that drew unmercifully on King's stash of horse-opera cliches. "'S'all very nice," one thought, "but let's move it, Steve!" Volume 5--this book--moves it, despite not getting Roland the Gunslinger much nearer the Dark Tower, taking another big backward glance, and continuing to mine an open pit of oater conceits. Roland's ka-tet--himself and three twentieth-century New Yorkers, all of them now fellow gunslingers--approach a ranching and farming community anticipating a recurrent pestilence. After 23 years, the Wolves are coming from the evil-darkened East to abduct one of every pair of prepubescent twins older than three. The children will be returned, but nearly witless and sterile, doomed to grow immensely and enormously painfully in their middle teens, serve (if not too stupid) as workhorses, and suddenly, painfully wither and die in their early thirties. An erstwhile priest in the community knows what Roland and company are, and he persuades a community to send a committee to ask for their help. Of course, once asked, the code of the gunslinger compels acceptance. Gonna be a humdinger of a fight! Fore and aft of the showdown, King stuffs the book with juice, like the big flashback, in which Pere Callahan reveals his past in . . . 'Salem's Lot. One of the greatest cavalcades in popular fiction is back on track. Ray Olson

Slows down a little with the back story of a new character
By General Electric
I've been reading my way through this entire series this year and can't see any reason to ever give it anything less than 5-star ratings based on the creative force and content behind it. Sure, in a book series some volumes will not be your favorite. Was this my favorite of the five I've read? Probably not. Callahan's back story became very lengthy and redundant. I felt like I was reading the same three pages over and over for a good fifty page stretch. Otherwise I really enjoyed it and have jumped straight into book six right after reading the last page of "Calla." I'm obsessed with this series as I'm sure you are as well if you're reading this.

An Adventure, do ya ken?
By Robert P.
While fans of the series may have thought that Roland's tale at the 2nd half of Wizard and Glass dragged on a bit, they will find that King returns to top form in Wolves of the Calla. From the onset you are drawn in and the tension only builds; up to the very last page. Not only are the main characters grown, but King creates an entire town that you can't help root for. A very good read indeed.

Amazon.com Review
Take your average guide for new mothers, chuck most of the stuff about breast feeding and ditch the deep background research and stats, then generously pepper with illustrations and burley humor and what do you have? Your average guide for new fathers. Be Prepared follows that template pretty closely, and that's really quite an acceptable thing. Yes, there's a bit too much emphasis here on broadly drawn manly stuff like changing a diaper at a ballgame, but there's also heaps of useful advice that's cleverly and efficiently presented for pops who, despite their best intentions, really aren't prepared to dig into encyclopedia-sized tomes. The basics (childproofing, bathing, feeding, entertaining) intermix with nifty sidebars (homemade bath toys, foods to never give your baby, exercises for dads) in easy-to-peruse chapters organized according to the age of the offspring up to age 1. There are more thorough how-to guides for new dads, but for most men moving into fatherhood, Be Prepared will fill the bill. --Steven Stolder

From Publishers Weekly
Parenting is hard, and reading many of the jargon-filled parenting books out there can make it even harder, but with a combination of smart writing and clever illustrations, husband-and-wife team Greenberg (The Pop-up Book of Phobias; etc.) and illustrator Hayden make both seem fun, if not easy. As the subtitle suggests, the book is filled with advice that will appeal to the solution-centered male perspective, from step-by-step swaddling instructions to a guide for identifying six distinct infant crying patterns. (A hunger cry, for example, is "a pattern of low-pitched, rhythmic moans, growing more and more insistent," whereas a boredom pattern is "a low-volume whimper which stops and starts irregularly.") Not only is Greenberg and Hayden's information useful, but it's also been vetted by "several distinguished fellows" at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Along with the conventional chapters on baby-proofing your house and taking a baby's temperature are more obscure—and amusing—topics, such as how to videotape your baby and how to conduct a "Mirror Puppet Sing Along" to sooth a crying baby while driving (the technique requires two mirrors, a hand-puppet and an indifference to looking silly). Hayden's drawings strike just the right balance between textbook-boring and tongue-in-cheek funny, depicting everything from a sketch of a bottle of teething gel to a drawing of an exhausted father snoozing in a business meeting. Greenberg and Hayden have succeeded in providing new dads (and many moms, for that matter) with an entertaining and informative cheat sheet.

Be Prepared
By Oleanna
At first glance, Be Prepared looks like it might be a joke book. The bright yellow handbook format cover shows a child in a backpack strapped onto a smiling, manly fellow in a lumberjack shirt. Front backpack straps replace the man's suspenders, baby bottle, rattles and other toys are at his waist, toolbelt style, and a pacifier dangles from a strap in his fingers. It captures attention.

Likewise, the inside of the book captures attention with well designed layout and graphics. Readers recognize the content, presented with abundant wit and style, is playful but not a joke. This is a creative, purposeful production with solid, helpful information delivered in fun, maybe over-the-top, masculine terms, but quite real.

With useful, pithy information in easily assimilated chunks, and a fun filled, `can-do/here's how', unsentimental attitude, this nuts-and- bolts manual attracts expectant and new dads the way their beloved Worst-Case Scenario books used to, but with more usable material that really will help prepare them for parenting, appreciate their baby, and boost their confidence. Dads who know how to care for their infants are more likely to participate in care and strengthen parent-child attachment from the start. This interesting book imparts the preparatory knowledge well indeed.

It is organized in five general sections by age, from newborn to one year, with basic information about normal development and needs, and appropriate fatherly responsibilities and skills. Mindful, entertaining, diagrammed instructions for hundreds of such necessities as diapering, stimulating, soothing, bathing, swaddling, burping, reading Sports Illustrated with the baby, and recognizing types of crying, are laid out with humor and a decidedly masculine slant:

" Place one of your large outdoor trash cans under the window of the baby's room . (If you live in the city, you can hang a bag from the rail of your fire escape.) Each time you get a dirty diaper, simply open the window and throw down a long range jumper; Once a day, you can go out and collect the air balls, but don't be surprised how fast you'll get the rhythm down. . . "

" . . Studies have shown that the most effective rocking mimics the mother's walking pattern, which is approximately sixty rocks a minute. . . try reggae music. The beat is solid and steady, and it's got a natural buoyancy that will complement your rocking. And best of all, most reggae music cycles at around sixty to seventy beats per minute, tailor-made to your baby's needs. (Bob Marley's Buffalo Soldier is almost a perfect sixty b.p.m.."

WIthout being simplistic, this creative book actually will help dads get their parenting rhythm down, and will appeal to many men who otherwise would not read a book for new fathers. It's a good start.

Authors Greenberg, a comedian, and Hayden,an illustrator/graphic designer, are parents of a daughter.

One of the best books I read as a father-to-be
By Dwayne Burball
As a soon-to-be and then new father, I wound up getting more out of this entertaining book than most of the super serious baby care stuff I read alongside it. I now get this as a baby shower gift for any friends who are having their first kid.

Lighthearted at times but definitely NOT a joke book, this is more like an old school "guy manual" about dealing with your first kid. Nice illustrations and some great topics you wouldn't automatically think to cover. I'm pretty sure I picked up the "gently bouncing the baby while sitting on an exercise ball" trick from this book, and it got me through many a put-the-baby-down-for-exhausted-mama session back in the day.

And ladies, if you're trying to get your fella on board with broadening his baby knowledge and he's just not churning through the books like you are, pick this up and leave it on his nightstand. He'll start flipping through it casually and wind up reading the entire thing and picking up some great tips along the way.

and he absolutely loved it. The book was written with humor
By Heather D. Couillard
I got this for my husband when we found out I was pregnant, and he absolutely loved it. The book was written with humor, which made it fun for him - and he learned a lot, often teaching ME things that he'd gleaned from his reading. Honestly, of all the expectant daddy books out there, I can't imagine one more perfect than this. Great info, presented in a very palatable style.

Ever wonder why most women can handle the kids and careers and the renovation but men can concentrate on either the newspaper or a game on TV? This is because female brains have more interconnections that allow them to multi-task and split their attention. The New Feminine Brain is the first book by a medical doctor, who is also a psychiatrist and a brain expert, to show how modern life challenges are physically rewiring the brain and to address the particular challenges that women face as a result. The female brain today is not your grandmother's brain - it has even more connections and skills, but with that can come more physical problems, including an increase in attention and memory deficits and chronic mood and health conditions.

The New Feminine Brain combines the insights of Dr Schulz's research and stories of clinical experience as a neuropsychiatrist treating people with tough brain disorders with unique self-help and expert health advice. Readers will discover and cultivate their special genius and intuitive style with provocative self-tests, so they can hear and heal their depression, anxiety, attention, memory, and other brain problems. 'Rewiring' exercises, herbs and nutritional supplements will improve their physical, psychological and emotional health.

Amazon.com Review
Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz reveals the intricate science behind women's intuition in The New Feminine Brain, and shows that while ignoring one's sixth sense can devastate the body, honoring its messages can lead to greater creativity, improved physical well-being, and joy. Coming from the pen of a board certified neuropsychiatrist, neuroscientist and medical intuitive, the topic receives just as much clinical attention as it does the breathe-out-and-tune-in type. Schulz begins with a crash course in neuropsychiatry to illustrate how the female brain's innate adaptability has caused women to literally rewire their thinking for survival in today's (man's) world. Unfortunately, the body doesn't always buy what the new feminine brain is selling. The result can mean disaster to a woman's health. Pinpointing the true source of one's physical aches, infections, diseases, and psychoses requires an honest look within.

Embracing her own Attention Deficit Disorder, Schulz zooms from rich discussions about gender brain wiring to quick patient stories, to questionnaires that help readers learn how their own brains are "wired for mood," "wired for fear," or wired for early senility. It's an interactive ride punctuated by dizzying lists, charts, and checklists that involve frequent page-flipping. Schulz point out that detailed descriptions of prescriptive medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements (complete with dosage recommendations and cautions regarding drug interaction), all include a caveat: simply medicating the body doesn't promise long-term physical and emotional health. Here, intuition must preside. Schulz responds with multiple strategies to help women nurture even the tiniest inner voice, and become their own best medical intuitives.--Liane Thomas

Finally, an explanation!
By S. E. Rowland
I love Dr. Mona Lisa's work and listen to her on Hay House Radio. Use her books for reference along with Dr. Christiane Northrups' books. Mine are on the shelf next to psychology, anatomy, & physiology texts, nutrition, and spiritual books. The New Feminine Brain is sourcebook about brain functioning, gender, behavior, female and male hormones, family dynamics, medication, therapy models, and so on. You get the picture. There are fascinating case studies in TNFB. This is not a book you sit down to entertain yourself with, ie it is not " a little light reading." Use the book to look up what you, or your client, or a family member's issue might be. This is a great book for women (and men) studying medicine, psychology, coaching, and intuition. And women, buy the book for your sanity! :-)
