Winning Em' Over, by Jay A. Conger

A historic shift is occurring in the nature of management. Until recently, bosses could simply use the power of their positions to direct and order their subordinates. However, in today's workplace, which is significantly different from the remarkably homogenous and traditional business environment of just two decades ago, the approach of command authority no longer works effectively.

"Winning 'em Over" chronicles a revolution. We are witnessing an ancient model of managing built around command and hierarchy give way to a new model built around persuasion and teamwork. Jay Conger demonstrates to managers on all levels how to thrive in the wake of this momentous transformation.

Today we work in an environment where people don't just ask ""What" should I do?" but ""Why" should I do it?" To successfully answer this "why" question is to persuade. Yet many businesspeople misunderstand and still more make little use of persuasion. The problem? Persuasion is widely perceived as a skill reserved for selling products and closing deals. But in reality, good managers are persuading all day long. As Conger explains with insight and conviction, today's most effective managers are influencing others through constructive forms of persuasion -- and their employees give them levels of commitment and motivation that the managers of the last generation could only dream of.

Conger illustrates how three important forces -- new generations of managers and executives, cross-functional teams, and unprecedented access to information that was once the privilege of the most senior levels of management -- are undermining the old Age of Command and ushering in the new Age of Persuasion. He exposes the most commonly held myths about the art of persuasion and shows how to influence others productively, without manipulation. Most important, he outlines the four crucial components of effective managing by persuasion: building one's credibility, finding common ground so that others have a stake in one's ideas, finding compelling positions and evidence, and emotionally connecting with coworkers so that solutions resonate with them on a personal level. In "Winning 'em Over, " Conger explains how to implement a management style that will succeed in what is becoming a fundamentally and radically different business environment, and he provides readers with all of the new tools they will need to become effective, constructive persuaders.

Review
Warren Bennis author of "Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative" Collaboration While most management books and gurus exhort and espouse the new look in management (employee involvement, vision and values, teamwork, and collaborative leadership), Jay Conger's latest book actually provides powerful guidelines that enable executives and managers to translate these ideas into action. He does this by emphasizing the interpersonal dynamics of the New Management; that is, how bosses and their followers influence each other. It's a marvelously inventive and useful book with vivid illustrations, terrific exercises, and down-to-earth examples. "Winning 'em Over" is also full of wit and imagination.

Patricia B. Robinson President, Mead School and Office Products Division Jay Conger returns the word "respect" to corporate America's lexicon. His insights are integral to motivating and keeping the smartest and most talented people in an organization.

Michael J. Powers Vice Chairman of Professional and Organizational Development, Ernst & Young LLP Persuasive leadership will be the key to success in the twenty-first century -- for individuals and organizations. It is an easy concept, but subtle and difficult to execute well. Conger brings the topic to life. The examples are compelling and the guidance is powerful and practical.

Mike Yerington President, Western Union Commercial Services If you want to be a master leader, read Conger's book. He identifies and explains the techniques that teach leaders effective, motivating, and compelling communication. As a leader, "[Winning 'em Over]" will radically redefine your style and prepare you for the future.

Marie L. Knowles Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, ARCO Business leadership is a team sport. Nobody knows how to fire up a modern business team like management guru Jay Conger.

Steve Nielsen Managing Director of The Leadership Institute, Federal Express Persuasion is no longer something that should be left to "sales professionals." It's important to understand what Jay Conger already has a firm grasp on: the ability to persuade and sell ideas has a direct link to leadership. "Winning 'em Over" confirms my belief that effective leadership has less to do with power and position and much more to do with building relationships, caring, serving, and communication.

Roberta W. Gutman Vice President of Global Diversity, Motorola In the global business environment of today, the skills outlined in this book will be critical. Conger's "straight talk" on the subject and his numerous examples make leading with persuasion easy and enjoyable.

Chapter 1

Welcome to the Future

Let's begin with the parable of Jacobson and Eeene. Mike Jacobson was known in the company as a real comer. He'd quickly risen up the ranks to senior management and at forty-five was in line for a vice presidency. In what was clearly a prelude to that promotion, Mike had been put in charge of the company's new-product development team.

It was a crucial assignment. The team was created in response to competition from companies who now were able to introduce three times as many new products as Mike's firm could. Over the last two years, these rivals had been like sharks, chewing off some 4.5 percent of the company's market share. The team's meetings, unfortunately, had not been going well. And today was no different.

The big issue before the meeting was how to design the next generation of the company's Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), a small, handheld computer that could take notes, send faxes, and receive e-mail. If the new model succeeded in the marketplace, it could reverse the company's downward slide. The question was, how fancy should it be?

Mike was from marketing, and he'd been arguing that to attract customers the PDA should have lots of new features. But no one had seemed to be listening. The team's attention was fastened upon Peter Keene, the recently appointed manager of production. Peter was emphasizing low price and snafu-free production; he believed the product should be simple and stripped down, with fewer features. To Mike's dismay Peter seemed to be not just winning the debate but emerging as the team's real leader. He wasn't doing it on purpose; it was just happening.

"The guy is some kind of genius," Mike thought to himself. Peter had this uncanny ability to get his point across.

Mike glanced at his watch. The meeting had been underway for twenty-one minutes. It was time for him to intervene, time to try once again to assert his view. He was sure that by virtue of his position as team leader and the force of his personality, he could make the discussion finally go his way.

He cleared his throat. "Look, people," he announced. "I want to say something here." A few faces turned in his direction, but the others looked straight ahead or down at their papers. "What we have to do," he went on as forcefully as he could, "is to find a solution that's right for the customer. The customer is number one. So I want to restate my position. The customer wants more features, not less. You guys are headed down the wrong path."

He sat back, expecting agreement. It didn't come.

"Hey, folks," he said, a faint note of desperation audible through his self-assurance and attempted humor. "I know what I'm talking about. I am the marketing guy here, and this is a marketing issue."

The people at the table waited in embarrassed silence until they saw that Mike was finished. Then they resumed their discussion about which product features could be dropped and still keep the customer happy.

Mike was stunned. They were treating him as if he'd said something very out of place. He tried to maintain his composure, but inside he was anxious, his chest was tightening. He'd been snubbed and ignored like this at several of the meetings. Had he lost his touch? What was happening here? Why weren't they listening? For the first time in his life he began to have thoughts of failure. What if, under his leadership, the team came up short? He'd be nailed for letting down the company in its time of crisis, and for disappointing the boss who'd given him this chance.

Several months before, when it had become clear that the firm's competitors were ravaging its markets, Mike's boss, the vice president of marketing, had decided it was time for a radical approach. Friends of his who were executives at other companies had given him glowing reports of how effective cross-functional teams could be in speeding up product development. The concept was sweeping the business world. Many management experts hailed it as the only way for a company to organize if it wanted to compete effectively.

Typically, these teams were composed of employees from a variety of company divisions, such as research and development, marketing, and production, along with representatives from the firm's suppliers and occasionally its customers. Team members came together as equals, not as superiors and subordinates, and together they shaped decisions from the very start of a new product.

This contrasted markedly with the way decisions used to be made. In the past, each division took charge of a certain phase of a product's development, handing it off to the next division. Research and development might suggest the initial idea. Engineering would design it. Manufacturing would make it. Marketing and sales would find the customers for it. This traditional approach -- passing work sequentially from one department to the next -- took considerable time. One group's work could be drastically revised by the next group, which stirred up resentment and caused inefficiencies.

Mike's boss had persuaded the company to try the cross-functional technique. Then he named Mike, his protégé, as the team's formal leader. The job, he knew, would give Mike important new management experience and high visibility in the company, setting him up for a major advancement.

Mike's team's first assignment was to hustle along the Personal Digital Assistant. The product had been languishing for more than a year in the research department. Now it was given top priority. If handled right, it could turn the company around. Mike knew that as leader of the team that accomplished the coup, he'd be springboarded into the executive suite.

That's how things looked to Mike when he signed on. Instead the opportunity was fast becoming a nightmare.

From the first meeting the team process had been difficult for Mike. He'd managed subordinates successfully for fourteen years, but this team was something else, especially the younger people. They'd seemed a lot harder to motivate.

His customary procedure in meetings had always been to begin by inviting everyone to participate in the decision making. His theory was that if you involved people to a point, they'd let you have your own way. Sure, it was a manipulation. He didn't care that much about getting their input. He was going through the motions. The gambit usually had worked for him. He'd been able to direct decisions in the end.

So in this, his first experience with the cross-functional team approach, he'd used the same tactic. At the initial meeting he'd gone around the table asking for views, and then he'd declared his own. That should have been that. But, for some reason, it wasn't. In the next forty minutes the group systematically plucked away many of the features Mike had earnestly promoted. It was as if he'd never spoken.

Mike felt he had to do something to turn this group around. If he didn't reestablish himself as the leader, he'd be disgraced. It was time, he told himself, to lay down the law. His career, after all, was on the line.

He squared his shoulders and placed both hands on the table. Just as his hands touched the wood, there was a lull in the conversation, and he moved quickly to take advantage of it.

"Okay," he said, "hold on just one minute. We're getting way off track. I want you guys to listen up for a minute." The expressions on the faces seemed less than receptive. "I am the team leader here. And Peter," he said, turning toward Peter, "I think you are just plain wrong. This is not a cost issue. You're going to kill this product before it ever gets out the door if you nickel-and-dime it with costs."

As he continued he gradually raised his voice. "We have to add features. Look, I want to go over again what customers are telling us. Remember what I said earlier about the focus groups...."

The team sat patiently as Mike explained his perspective point by point.

"And that," he said emphatically in closing, "is what we've got to do."

Once again there was a pause, and then the conversation resumed its previous course, the course that Peter had set. It was as if Mike had never spoken. Baffled, slightly panicked, he asked himself what was wrong. He'd been a leader all his life. In high school he'd been class president, in college the head of his fraternity. At the company he had won promotion after promotion. Now, it seemed, he couldn't even run a meeting. Maybe he'd just been lucky all his life and now his luck was running out.

As he looked around the room, he reminded himself that no one here was his subordinate. Few of these people had a vested interest in his leadership, let alone his career. His formal title didn't make much difference to them either. These people were more or less his peers. How could you lead people if they were your equals? It seemed a contradiction.

His mind raced through the handful of management books he had recently read. None of them had talked about leading in this type of situation.

His reflections were interrupted by a voice at the far end of the table. "It's six P.M.," the person said. "Time to adjourn?" There were murmurs of assent.

Someone else named several members of the team who might collect more information before the next meeting, and those members said they would.

"And Mike," a third person said, "why don't you bring more of your research results?" Mike wondered for an instant if the suggestion was meant to rub his nose in his bungle, then realized it was sincere. He nodded, slowly lifted himself, and turned toward the door.

That night was a restless one for Mike. It took him a long time to drop off, and when he awoke, the red digital numbers on his clock said 4:23 A.M. He knew he couldn't get back to sleep, so, trying not to disturb his slumbering wife, he got out of bed and went down to the kitchen. For an hour he sat at the kitchen table analyzing the catastrophe of the day before, trying to puzzle out a plan of action. He finally decided to go see his friend Frank Freeman and ask for advice. He knew Frank came in early, so he'd get there early, too.

A paradigm shift from stereotypes of persuasion
By Turgay BUGDACIGIL
"One important aim of this book is to challenge your stereotypes of persuasion. We usually think of persuasion as something reserved for salespeople-certainly not for managers. What I am going to propose to you is that, quite to the contrary, persuasion skills have become absolutely essential to the job of managing-far more than we might imagine. Much of what a good manager does today is sell: sell their ideas to coworkers; sell their organizations on change; sell their bosses on new investments. But it's not traditional selling. A large part of what we do as effective managers is to find optimal solutions for problems through investigation, discussion, and debate. We then convince our organization to get behind them. It is in the convincing part that we face our greatest hurdless-getting buy-in. This is where the skills of constructive persuasion play a vital role. So leave behind your older notions of persuasion. It's time for a paradigm shift. Your effectiveness depends on it" (pp.14-15).
In this context, in Chapter 2, after listing wrong ideas about persuasion as following:
1. persuasion is simply mustering the best arguments for something;
2. persuasion almost always involves stating your position up front;
3. persuasion means being assertive-often very assertive; and
4. negotiating and deal making are at the heart of it.
Jay A. Conger writes that "These are some of the stereotypes people have about the act of convincing. There are several others. Together I call them the 'killer myths' of persuasion-'killer' because they can kill our ability to be effective and our motivation to become better persuaders."
Killer Myth 1- The most effective persuasion is the hard sell.
Killer Myth 2- Persuasion is a one-way process.
Killer Myth 3- Effective persuaders succeed on the first try.
Killer Myth 4- Good persuaders don't need to compromise.
Killer Myth 5- Great arguments are the secret to successful persuasion.
Killer Myth 6- Persuasion is pure manipulation.
As a result, he writes that "Now that we know what persuasion isn't, we may be wondering what constructive persuasion really is." Hence, he shows four distinct steps such as (i)building your credibility, (ii)finding the common ground, (iii)developing compelling positions and evidence, and (iv)connecting emotionally to becoming an effective persuader, and he discusses these steps/the four elements of effective persuasion throuhout the following four (3-6) chapters.
Highly recommended.

USED TO BE Heartbreakingly Out of Print
By Mark A. Horstman
As an indication of how good this book is, I bought five copies when it came back in print. There are less than a dozen business books I have more than 2-3 copies of (Drucker is half of them.) It's that good.
As a leadership consultant who regularly has to assist Directors, Vice Presidents and above - many of them in technology-heavy companies - this is the book I used to recommend most often, and it breaks my heart it is out of print. It is good enough that I have contacted Mr. Conger directly. Here's what I've found: it speaks in language that most executives can understand, and with a litle bit of coaching this book provides a framework for them to see what they are doing and not doing when it comes to internal communications, relationships, and, yes, politics. I am no longer amazed at the lack of caolition-building and relationship development skills of executives, but I come across it constantly. As such, I often find that great ideas are NOT being implemented either do to a lack of understanding of, or blatant disregard for, the need to PERSUADE others of the viability and effectiveness of the recommended course of action.
If you're a bright executive who wonders why someone with less technical depth than you has gotten promoted in front of you, this book is a good place to start looking. Ask yourself whether you are as good interpersonally as you are technically.

"Winning 'Em Over" should be required B-School reading!
By A Customer
As a recent MBA graduate, I found "Winning 'Em Over" to be a perfect complement to my formal education. By drawing on the disciplines of rhetoric, communication studies, management, and even storytelling, Jay Conger weaves a provocative and compelling argument for a fundamental and generational shift in the nature of management - from an Age of Command to an Age of Persuasion. Conger proves with contemporary examples what Aristotle knew thousands of years ago - that the author/audience (or persuader/persuadee) relationship is a covenant based on trust and mutually beneficial outcomes, that the audience must be an active participant in the process of persuasion, and that persuasion is a subtle art form. The beauty of "Winning 'Em Over" is that Conger explains the essence of this art in the context of the modern-day manager. In doing so, he provides the tools by which we can begin to understand the route to effective persusasion and, by extension, exemplary leadership. To become effective managers and leaders, we NEED to understand and adopt the principles examined in this book.

Good Book!
By Irene Music
I took my GRE in October and got 96% for Verbal. I think I owe it to this book (AND to Barron's Pass Key to the GRE). This book has a very helpful vocab list -- I especially like how they break down into which sets of words are most common, then next most common etc... I also found their analogies section and sentence completion section very helpful -- the 4 types of bridges idea for an analogy was next to revolutionary for me. Also learning that the answer choices for an analogy have to match the same order as the words in the analogy. I lived 27 years and NEVER knew that, I don't know how many times I've gotten questions wrong from having the correct relationship there but the answer words in the wrong order.

The other sections I didn't find too helpful, the reading comp. And their section on building your vocab starts with something like "read your whole life" haha, that was meaningless.

not bad, i liked the exercises
By gummypenguin
This book was useful if you need a broad overview, and I like their layout better than Barrons. But basically they contain mostly the same info at least on the verbal part. If you have lots of time and want to work through everything in this book, you could certainly learn alot of vocab. And they have some good tips as well.

Although I'm only half-way through this workbook, I 've found it indespensable for any one wishing to increase their English vocabulary and especially for those akin to improve their verbal scores in the GRE. I've already managed to improve my own unofficial scores with the help of this book and I'm very confident that these improved scores will be reflected in the actual GRE. Pafko at the Wall: A Novella, by Don DeLillo

"There's a long drive. It's gonna be. I believe. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant." -- Russ Hodges, October 3, 1951 On the fiftieth anniversary of "The Shot Heard Round the World," Don DeLillo reassembles in fiction the larger-than-life characters who on October 3, 1951, witnessed Bobby Thomson's pennant-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jackie Gleason is razzing Toots Shor in Leo Durocher's box seats; J. Edgar Hoover, basking in Sinatra's celebrity, is about to be told that the Russians have tested an atomic bomb; and Russ Hodges, raw-throated and excitable, announces the game -- the Giants and the Dodgers at the Polo Grounds in New York. DeLillo's transcendent account of one of the iconic events of the twentieth century is a masterpiece of American sportswriting.

This is how to write a book
By Lord Byron
Who cares about Underworld? I didn't go near it. Separating this classic from that tome was the best marketing move anyone's ever done. This book should be in the public domain anyway. Imagine taking a baseball game, exploding it into one of the world's greatest historical events as seen from various characters' points of view, and at the same time encapsulating the dawning of a new moment in world history. Every sentence is sharp and detailed, anticipating the next. And then when Thomson hits the home run, Delillo freeze frames each second like you're in a car crash, making sure you're aware of everything that's going on. It's one of the best books ever written.

The Most Brilliant & Breathtaking Novel Opening Ever
By A Customer
And I really believe that. This is the opening section of *Underworld* (1997), and it originally appeared in Harpers--so, when I saw it in stores, I thought "why re-release this as a BOOK?"
Then, I read it. It stands on its own as a novella--and it's not *just* about baseball, either, so don't let that mislead you or put you off. It's about *everything*. Maybe you don't wish to read the lengthy *Underworld* (though the themes and characters and plotlines here run through the entire novel)--but at LEAST read THIS.
And while I own the novel, I'm pleased to own this, too--and if you like DeLillo and wish to turn others on to his work, this is what you give them. I've given copies to several people, and use this brilliant work in my "Writing a Novella" Creative Writing class. I don't test the students, or ask them to try to emulate the work--I just ask them to read it.
Their jaws drop open every time, just as mine did--and does.

"THOMSON AT THE BAT"
By TheReader23
I haven't read Underworld, so when I bought this book, all I knew was that it was about "the shot heard round the world" and that was good enough for me. Having grown up in Brooklyn and having lived in a house with three brothers and a father who were all avid Giant fans, this is something I've heard about my whole life. I wasn't even walking in 1951 so I certainly don't remember that day but what I do remember is it's being discussed in my home, ad nauseam, for as long as I can remember. In honor of my now deceased father and my very alive three brothers, (who followed the Giants and remained Giant fans as they went on to San Francisco), I have taken it upon myself to learn more about that fateful day in Dodger history when Giant fans all over New York roared in unity as Bobby Thomson's strike of the bat ended the Dodger season in 1951.
DeLillo's attention to detail is so vivid that I actually felt as if I was hearing Russ Hodges announce the game. The book is full of nostalgic remembrances especially when he talks about one of the Giant sponsors - Chesterfield cigarettes. Between innings, Hodges actually instructs the audience to stay right where they are and "light up a Chesterfield." Can you imagine saying that today? And I found that the trivia about the large CHESTERFIELD sign in centerfield lighting up the "E" when an error was made is stuff my brothers don't even know about. I can't wait to hit them with all this info when we get together this holiday season. As a matter of fact, I've already asked one of my brothers if he knew who was playing left field when Thomson hit the ball and he didn't know. So much for the baseball trivia experts in my family.
I also enjoyed DeLillo's portrayal of the young Cotter Martin as he struggled to grab Thomson's ball from under the seats and his race out of the Polo Grounds as he clutched the much sought after ball. While I thought I would enjoy the Frank Sinatra/Jackie Gleason references, I found them to be the least desirable part of the book.
The bottom line is that I enjoyed the book and now feel quite comfortable discussing this episode in baseball history with the best of them. I did have one question though -- If Bobby Thomson was "hot" that day and already had two hits (one of which had driven in a run), why did Branca take the chance of pitching to him? With men on second and third, I would think he would have walked him and taken his chances with the then rookie "Say Hey" Willie Mays. After finishing this book, I did some further research on this game and found that others have asked this same question. I guess I did learn something growing up as the only girl in that family of all boys. By the way, they're all getting a copy of this book for Christmas this year. It's a definite MUST for the "true" New York Giant fan.

Best Parenting Book on the Market
By Jessica E. Bowen
Forget all those smarmy books full of buzz words and advice that will never work on real kids. Miss Manners knows what it really takes to raise polite kids. She also is so funny that you will literally laugh out loud while you read through this book. You'll read it straight through like a novel and you'll be so glad to have it on hand to answer questions that pop up. A fantastic baby shower gift!

My CHilrdern are now Teenagers
By Mom of 3
I read this book when my oldest was an infant and I can tell you the book was great. The part I remember most was right in the beginning. Miss Manners divides parents in to two types. There are the type who beam when they see their children, love them to death, and think they are wonderful, then there are the type who consider their children difficult and a terrible inconvenience. The ones who think their kids are wonderful wind up with children who want to please their parents and become great people with far less difficulty.

For the record I have one in college and two are still teenagers. They are not particularly easy, in fact people gave me a very hard time when they were younger. Following the advice int his book worked and we developed a calm and happy household. My critics who followed various popular child rearing methods from experts now have difficult and rebellious teenagers and my kids are mostly easy excepting a few perfectly normal hormonal eruptions. I constantly get comments on my children's wonderful manners. My daughter who is exceptionally oppositional recently complained that she cannot have any fun rebelling because everything is her choice. I am not permissive, they do not choose consequences, but from a young age I have had total faith in their ability to figure things out from their own experience and ultimately make good choices as they get older.

Other books that helped me were James Dobson's "Dare to Discipline" and his book on oppositional children. People around me considered my kids very difficult from about birth to age 6-10 depending on the child, so I can assure you parents out there that these methods really do work and Miss Manners is not starting out with Perfect Children, she is teaching people how to develop them.

And if your children are already presentable and tolerable, you'll die laughing at Miss Manners' wit and wisdom. You'll reread this book every year and enjoy it every time. Before you know it, you'll be enjoying an outing to the mall with all your kids in tow.

Review
Glen Weldon, The Iowa Review, 1997:  Kiteley depicts the shadowy streets, the genial diffidence of the people, but what sets his prose apart is the purchase it affords the reader on Ib's perceptions.  In spare, economic language, he establishes Ib's uneasy mixture of familiarity and bemusement, his affection for--and frustration with--his world.  We come to intuit the sense of hesitant isolation afflicting his life; he is at once home and not-home.  Despite his years as a resident, he is forever a foreigner in a city of inscrutable mystery. The triumph of this novel [is] that these characters manage to brush up against some pretty large abstractions like foreignness and narrative truth without compromising their roundedness and vitality.  This is not, luckily for the reader, merely a novel of ideas.  Kiteley's people are simply too well wrought, too expertly achieved, to let themselves sit passively by, mouthing stories and theories and thought experiments.  And that's important, because Ib's Cairo is, after all, a dire, intriguing place.  Trusted guides vanish, only to reappear with different names.  Strangers accuse each other of dark crimes.  Personal histories come into doubt, truth is mutable. Thankfully, I Know Many Songs, But I Cannot Sing has at its wise heart a cadre of strong, believable characters who remain compelling against even so exotic, and wondrous, a setting.

Judith Caesar, North Dakota Review, Volume 64, No. 4, 1997:  At first I Know Many Songs, But I Cannot Sing seems like an exotic, surreal, picaresque account of an American's night in a foreign city.  The plot pulls the reader forward; we want to find out who these people are and how to place them.  We want to know why they are acting as they are, and how they know what they know. But what follows is a novel of ideas that explores the multiplicity of identity and reality.  The setting is not merely exotic because the novel concerns the the difficulties of understanding other cultures, other values, other realities.  The events that seem mysterious and magical have a plausible explanation within these other realities.  And yet Kiteley also explores the limits of human understanding, specifically one's ability to understand what is outside one's own direct experience. In its sheer density and complexity,I Know Many Songs, But I Cannot Sing resembles that classic post-modern novella, The Crying of Lot49.  And yet Kiteley's themes are all his own.

Pablo Conrad, The Village Voice Literary Supplement, March 1996:  Kiteley is not writing about enchantment. For all its frustrating disjunctions and apparent illogic, this novel is strangely concrete.  His Cairo blossoms, not least in the heightened perceptions of food as the day's fast draws to a close: "two boys fly by shouldering hot metal pans of bubbling eggplant casserole...  The smell that lingers in their path briefly blurs the scenery."  Gamal engages[the narrator] Ib in a game of story-telling--joined later by others--narrating incidents and dreams that Ib copies down afterward.  The longest isa quietly frightening account of the accidental poisoning of Gamal's four-year-old daughter Annahid, and shares the novel's title.  Such intimacies draw Ib further and further into Gamal's circle; and at the novel's close they all gather outside the city, exhausted, just before sunrise.  The gentleness and elements of love in their stories echoes Kiteley's evident concern with small details of relationships and personal interaction. However disconcerting at first, the effect is finally compelling.  In the acknowledgments to this slim volume, the author notes he "wrote this book in part on postcards to dozens of friends and family members,"adding, "I appreciated everyone's forbearance."  This strange, rewarding novel is steeped in that sort of intimacy.

From Publishers Weekly
Again demonstrating the facility he showed in his well-received debut, Still Life with Insects, Kitely here offers another entrancing miniature, which pairs two dissimilar outcasts in contemporary Cairo. Ib, an expatriate American historian and translator of the Sufi mystic poet Rumi, finds his easygoing lifestyle disrupted by Gamal-Leon, an Armenian-born theater critic and drama teacher raised in Cairo. Gamal spies on the rattled American, follows him everywhere and plays practical jokes intended to challenge Ib's preconceptions of Egyptians and the Middle East. Their friendship is a duet of mutual cultural misunderstandings played out during the last weeks of Ramadan, the month-long Muslim holy period of daytime fasting and nighttime feasting. Kitely compellingly evokes the tensions of contemporary Egypt: its jarring juxtapositions of antiquity and Western pop culture; the million homeless refugees who camp out on the streets and in the parks of Cairo; the ubiquitous police informers who record ordinary citizens' conversations. His polyglot characters are complex. Ib is anguished at the recent death of his Dutch stepfather, whom Ib's mother divorced so that she could remarry Ib's father. Ib feuds with his sisters, who are jealous because he received his stepfather's entire inheritance. (Ib is a Danish name akin to Jacob, the biblical twin who persuaded his brother, Esau, to part with his inheritance.) Meanwhile, Gamal, an Armenian Christian, wrestles with his unhappy marriage to a Coptic Egyptian whose sister, a convert to Islam, married a Muslim terrorist now in jail. Kitely's motley circle of expatriates lends a cosmopolitan flavor to an exquisitely wrought mosaic.

From Library Journal
A combination of a Kafka novel, Robert Altman movie, and psychedelic record album, this strange, dreamy little novel from the author of the well-regarded Still Life with Insects (Graywolf, 1993) takes on themes of inversion, foreignness, and communications breakdown. Set in Cairo during Ramadan (the Muslim festival during which participants fast during the day and feast by night), the tale unfolds as an American known only as Ib is joined more or less purposefully by an Armenian named Gamal-Leon (who eventually deconstructs his own name: a "quick-change artist, a slippery tongued mimic who does not know his own voice or face") to visit playhouses, executive office parties, a prison. All these activities are overcast with a significance not totally apparent. Kiteley offers an elusive, hypnotic, even hallucinogenic novel about being as well as the mysteries of being. Highly recommended for literature collections serving sophisticated readers.

Foreigness explored
By M. J. Smith
Brian Kiteley has written two excellent novels - why he is not better known escapes me. I Know Many Songs, but I Cannot Sing is a much more difficult read than Still Life with Insects but well worth the concentration required.
Kitely explored "foreigness" in a variety of forms in Cairo - the American (respectful and disrespectful), Coptic Christian, German Sufi's, Armenian, and a variety of 'native' Egyptians who either by mixed heritage or Western education also are 'foreign'. Kitely is superb in allowing the Egyptian world-view to be as real as the European world-view at the same time that he emphasizes the contraditions.
The story line is seemingly simple ... an Armenian actor begins following an American/European teacher as a practical joke; they become friends an spend a remarkable night in Ramadan going from house/shop/office/prison/street to another. One cultural is consistently being played off another to provide competing explanations of the events. Kitely is a master at using the small detail - standing less than a foot away comfortable for Egyptians but not Americans, crooked lanes keeping cities cool while European straight boulevards allow the wind to blow cool night air away ... With the ever shifting perspective of dream, premonition, police spying, story time, added knowledge, the reader has a sense of being 'foreign' to the novel - a touch of Kiteley's mastery of his form.
Neither of Kiteley's novels should be neglected, even if it requires searching the used book market.

A subtle, profound, and haunting story
By val killpack
I sat down in the early afternoon and cracked open the cover. Sometime later, in the darkness of night, not sure if I even ate dinner, I finished the last sentence. Whereas Still Life With Insects is haunting and beautiful and The River Gods interestingly innovative, this book has more narrative force, a driving, dreamlike, and shifting perspective, but a real movement of energy. The main characters have depth, as well as the setting, which seems to almost have its own narrative voice. The novel explores ideas of identity, nation/state, religion, memory, and language, maybe even probing ideas of narrative, itself, and none of it didactic or on the surface, which is a real feat in such a brief work. In fact, this book deserves a second reading which I warmly look forward to. I can see there are more layers to explore.

The Best overall guide around
By monesque
You can make up your mind whether you agree with Parker's tastes or not, but he is thorough, accepts no ads, ranks high in the integrity column, and is consistent. If you are looking for a guide, you should not just examine Parker's book. There are many wine viewpoints that are helpful in the world. But it is also hard to think of anyone that does such a comprehensive job with such talent and integrity. You don't have to agree with every opinion or every review to appreciate this unique resource.

the bible
By A Customer
Simply stated, this is the bible from a consumerist perspective. Parker provides a great service and this book is a huge bargain. Everone has their "wish list" for this tome (in my case it is a desire for more coverage in Spain), but nothing else comes close. Some have reservations about Parker's great influence, but the fact is that nobody has worked harder or remained more independent.

Review
The New York Times Mr. Lewis has a genius for making his fantasies livable.

Commonweal Writing of the highest order. Perelandra is, from all standpoints, far superior to other tales of interplanetary adventures.

The New Yorker If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requisites to passage through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angels.

Los Angeles Times Lewis, perhaps more than any other twentieth-century writer, forced those who listened to him and read his works to come to terms with their own philosophical presuppositions.

The Best Novel I've Ever Read
By Brian G Hedges
This is, without doubt, the best novel I've ever read. It even beats The Lord of the Rings trilogy. C. S. Lewis's power of description, psychological insight, and emotional intensity reach a height here that is unparalleled. But beyond such engaging writing, Perelandra gives us poetry in prose, reality in story, theology in fantasy, truth in myth. It is an evocative tale, so compelling that for a faint second I could have believed it was true, and that Lewis was describing real events, not fictitious ones! And that is because it is so deeply grounded in the reality of The Great Dance, the drama of creation and redemption which is being enacted upon the stage of humanity. The final pages of this book sent my spirits soaring. I can scarcely describe its impact upon me. Take it and read.

Read them twice
By Brenda J. Deason
I first read these books when I was in high school. As an adult, I recommended them to my son, and while I was thinking about them, I read them again. I got a lot more out of them the second time around. I bought the trilogy as a gift for my son so he could take it with him when he went to college. Worth buying the books because they improve with re-reading.

Easy Read, Interesting Sub-text
By John P.
Classic SF Story used as a vehicle to analogize C.S. Lewis's theological beliefs. More adult than the Lion, Witch, Wardrobe books but not nearly as sophisticated as "Till We Have Faces". The science, of course, is ridiculous/non-existent and the 'bad' characters are simple caricatures, but it's still a great story and a fun read.
