Mr. Darcy's Daughters: A Novel, by Elizabeth Aston

Picking up twenty years after Pride and Prejudice left off, Mr. Darcy's Daughters begins in the year 1818. Elizabeth and Darcy have gone to Constantinople, giving us an opportunity to get to know their five daughters, who have left the sheltered surroundings of Pemberley for a few months in London. While the eldest, Letitia, frets and the youngest, Alethea, practices her music, twins Georgina and Belle flirt and frolic their way through parties and balls and Camilla -- levelheaded and independent -- discovers what joys and sorrows the city has to offer an intelligent young woman. Readers will delight in the return of such beloved Austen creations as Elizabeth's old nemesis Caroline Bingley (now Lady Warren), the ever-reliable Gardiners and wayward Aunt Lydia.
Charming, beautifully written and full of societal intrigue and romantic high jinks, Mr. Darcy's Daughters is a tale that would please Austen herself.

From Publishers Weekly
This sequel to Pride and Prejudice from first-time novelist Aston reads more like a beach book for historical fiction fans than a literary homage to Austen's masterpiece. The novel is set in 1818, when Mr. and Mrs. Darcy (nee Elizabeth Bennett) have gone on a diplomatic mission to Constantinople and left their five daughters in London with Darcy's cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam and his wife. Bossy Letitia and rebellious Camilla, the two eldest girls at 21 and 19, look forward to London's social whirl; the youngest, 16-year-old Althea, has an opportunity to study voice with an Italian master musician; and 17-year-old twins Georgina and Belle can't wait to flirt and break hearts. But the young country ladies "need to keep their wits well about them" in the city; pitfalls abound, suitors come calling and soon the Darcy girls-especially the mischievous Camilla, who "had too much of a sense of humour, too witty a tongue and too clever a mind"-are raising eyebrows and incurring the censure of some powerful Londoners. Aston attempts to imitate Austen's style, with little success-the prose is stilted and anachronistic ("it would be very fortunate if we were to find a suitable young man for Letitia. To help her get over Tom's loss, you know, and give her thoughts a new direction"). The daughters' personalities are drawn in broad, predictable strokes, and the romantic plot feels contrived and overly drawn out. Despite the curiosity factor, even Austen fans will likely give this a miss, perhaps turning instead to Emma Tennant's superior Austen sequels (Pemberley, etc.).

Review
Linda Berdoll author of The Bar Sinister A chess game of love and betrayal.

Julia Barrett author of Jane Austen's Charlotte Imagine poor Mr. Darcy with five marriageable daughters of his own! And in Mr. Darcy's Daughters, Elizabeth Aston has them all at large in dissolute London. Ah, but what a difference! Unlike Jane Austen's Bennet sisters, some twenty years earlier, these young ladies possess both position and money to spare! Aston takes us on a romp through late Regency society.

Joan Aiken author of Jane Fairfax I read [Mr. Darcy's Daughters] in two gulps and greatly enjoyed it...The invented daughters are fun -- prissy Letty, witty Camilla, musical Alethea, the unbridled twins -- and their ups and downs in London society make a lively story.

About the Author
Elizabeth Aston is a passionate Jane Austen fan who studied with Austen biographer Lord David Cecil at Oxford. The author of several novels, including Mr. Darcy's Daughters, she lives in England and Italy.

Meh...
By CoffeeGurl
Elizabeth Aston is one of the authors on my Jane Austen-sequel TBR pile. I have read two rather disastrous Pride and Prejudice sequels (Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife by Linda Berdoll and Pemberley by Emma Tennant) and one that I thought was good in a keeping-the-plot-neat-and-safe sort of way (Presumption by Julia Barrett) and I have to admit that I was wary of reading another one of these sequels again. Alas, I have already bought them, so I might as well give them a whirl. Mr. Darcy's Daughters is an apropos title for the book because it concentrates on the aforementioned characters and not so much on Darcy and Elizabeth. In fact, Mr. Darcy and Lizzy have to go on a business trip and leave their daughters under the care of Colonel Fitzwilliam and his wife in London. (They also have two boys, but are left under someone else's care.) The girls -- Letty, Camilla, Georgiana, Belle (these two are twins) and Alethia -- see this as an opportunity to have fun and perhaps cause a little mischief now that they are no longer under their parents' watchful eyes. There are some twists throughout the novel.

The novel has its good moments, but it nowhere near stays true to Jane Austen's style. The plot has a been-there-done-that feel to it and the sisters' personalities are not unlike those of the Bennett sisters. There is the witty, intelligent and spirited one (Camilla), there is the beautiful, albeit sensible one (Letty), and Georgiana and Belle are silly and scandalous. Alethia is the bluestocking, more taciturn one of the sisters. So, as you can see, their personalities are like those of Elizabeth, Jane, Kitty, Lydia and Mary. But just because the author made a blatant attempt at recreating the characters from Pride and Prejudice in the form of five new sisters does not mean that these characters are anywhere near as well written or as enjoyable as the ones in Pride and Prejudice. It came across more as a poor carbon copy of the original characters. And the subplots centered on sex scandals and premarital affairs did not sit well with me. It was almost as though the author wanted to write a typical Regency romance novel using Jane Austen's name for good measure. I have no problem with those sorts of plots, but if the author is trying to buy the reader into this being a P&P sequel... well, it nowhere near does the original justice and you're left with an icky taste in your mouth. And there are quite a few inconsistencies here as well. The original P&P characters used here don't sound anything like the ones Austen created. Sigh. Should I bother continuing to read these sequels? I have heard that An Assembly Such as This by Pamela Aidan is good. I hope that one will be a winner. As for this one, I guess it makes an okay Regency romance book (which I'm not pleased with because I pick this up hoping it'll be a "meatier" companion to my "escapist" read), but not a very great Jane Austen continuation.

Mr Darcys Daughters
By Wendy
I really enjoyed this book ! Yes, there was a lack of Mr & Mrs Darcy, however this story carries weight on its own. I found it to be a good page turner, having excellent details and characters. Were you to remove the Darcy name this would be an excellent historical novel, well worth reading. If, however, you are looking for a glimpse into Fitzwilliam & Elizabeth's life after marriage, it is not here. Having characters familiar to us through Pride & Prejudice did make keeping track of who is who alot easier, without this familiarity one could easily be confused and 'get lost'.

ASTON VS. AUSTEN
By Irma Fritz
There is something of the grave robber in a writer who pens a sequel to a dead author's story. I am talking about Elizabeth Aston who wrote "Mr. Darcy's Daughters: A Novel," intended as a sequel to Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." I noted with interest that Elizabeth calls herself "Aston" while Jane, of course, was an "Austen." Cleverly chosen penname, I assume?

Still, remembering Colton's maxim that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," and keeping on hand a good dose of Coleridge's "suspension of disbelief," I thought Aston pulled it off quite well.

In "Mr. Darcy's Daughters," the girls are perfectly modeled on the original Bennett girls of "Pride and Prejudice." Our modern Aston pretty much matches the 19th Century voice with a bit more modernity and some juicy scandal thrown into the plot. I was fine with both. While the Darcy twins at times were exasperating to the point where you want to smack them, after all is revealed and hurt feelings have been soothed, they were not that much wilder than their parents' generation.

Aston is not Austen, but she doesn't try to be. Unlike Austen, Aston is not a social critic or a writer who explores manners and mores of her time. She describes her creation as "full of societal intrigue and romantic high jinks," in other words an entertaining romance, and this she delivers. Elizabeth Aston is a skilled writer who gives us an entertaining good read. Graham Greene, whom I would call a great writer of an important body of literature, did not want his works labeled as such. He simply called them entertainments. I think what's good enough for Greene is good enough for Aston.

Look Away!: A History of the Confederate States of America, by William C. Davis

William C. Davis, "one of the best and most prolific historians of the American Civil War" (James M. McPherson, author of Battle Cry of Freedom), offers a definitive portrait of the Confederacy unlike any other.
Drawing on decades of writing and research among an unprecedented number of archives, ranging from the 800-odd newspapers in operation during the war to the personal writings of more than 100 leaders and common citizens, Davis reveals the Confederacy through the words of the Confederates themselves. Look Away! recounts all the epic sagas -- as well as those little-known and long-forgotten -- about a desperate government that socialized the salt industry, rangers and marauders who preyed on their fellow Confederates, and the systematic breakdown of law and order in some states. A dramatic, definitive account of one of our nation's most searing episodes, Look Away! shows us a South divided against itself, unable to stand.

Amazon.com Review
The military history of the Civil War is well known. The political history of the era, and especially of the South, is less documented, a gap that William Davis's Look Away! admirably addresses.

Although the rhetoric of secession was democratic, invoking the ideals of the American Revolution and its classical forebears, Southern politics was directed by members of a small, self-serving aristocracy. And though the Confederate government advanced what then and now might be thought to be radical proposals (for one, that the postal service had to be self-supporting within two years of its founding), it was intolerant of dissent; the South's leaders, Davis writes, even barred a constitutional provision "recognizing the right of a state to secede." The natural result, Davis shows, was widespread resistance, including the development of a peace movement and of political groups loyal to the old Union. At the end of the war, Davis writes, "Confederate democracy had gone and would not be seen again--but the oligarchies had survived." Davis's study affords a new view on the Civil War, and it makes a fine addition to the overflowing library devoted to that crisis. --Gregory McNamee

From Library Journal
The director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech, Davis (Lincoln's Men) here offers a sweeping nonmilitary perspective of the Confederacy, examining the political turmoil that led to its creation and the social and economic devastation left after its defeat. Civilian life, civil law and justice, internal dissent, the opposition to Richmond's dictates, and the uneasy relationships between old-line Whigs and Democrats in the Rebel state legislatures and governors' mansions constitute the bulk of the work. With reference to the South's planter class and political base, the author concludes: "They had begun in 1861 as a movement dedicated to the professed belief that sovereignty lay with the states. For four years that democracy went through strains and wrenches testing its ability to resist centralization through one compromise of its ideology after another." Herein lies the kernel of Davis's penetrating analysis of the values and differences among the various factions of the Confederacy. This important contribution to Confederate historiography is recommended for all Civil War collections and major libraries. John Carver Edwards, Univ. of Georgia Libs., Cleveland

From Booklist
Acknowledging that "a good story deserves retelling often," Davis, a three- time winner of the Jefferson Davis Prize for Confederate History, retells the story of the Confederacy but with a different slant. His richly detailed, heavily analytical narrative pictures the history of the Confederate States of America as a "national experience." His book, then, is not simply a recitation of Confederate military strategies and battles won or lost; the Civil War, as he views it from the Confederate perspective, "was a political and social battle from beginning to end, at first to establish the Confederacy, but then for the next four years to define what sort of democracy that Confederacy was or ought to be." Davis excels at defining the psychology and philosophy behind secession, and he is equally good at delineating what went wrong with the Confederacy as a country. This is not a "defense" of the Confederacy but an understanding of its history as an episode of attempted nation building. An important addition to Civil War-era collections. Brad Hooper

Interesting look at the people involved in the movement for secession. Also tells of the problems created by the Confederate government. And it gives examples of the lives of people other than soldiers in the Confederate states and the problems they faced.

The story of Jefferson Davis and Robert Rhett
By William D. Shingleton
Look Away is truth in advertising. The cover of the book advertises William C. Davis' work as A History of the Confederate States of America, which is exactly what this book is. In other words, this book is not a history of the Civil War with a few stray bits regarding Confederate politics thrown in. Instead of writing about the war, Davis clearly set out to examine the political roots of the CSA from its inception to its death as well as the social impact of the war on the homefront.

Davis succeeds in this task to a fair degree. Although the book starts out slowly for the first 20 pages, it really picks up as it gets to the battles during the CSA's founding convention. The major characters are drawn with their flaws intact; Robert Barnwell Rhett, the South Carolina firebrand and free trader, emerges as a particular villain in this tragedy. Davis also provides some strong evidence that whatever their protestations about states' rights, the founders of the Confederacy were mostly interested in preserving slavery and were willing to sacrifice states' rights from the beginning in order to preserve slavery within the ranks.

However, the central theme of the book is not the hypocracy at the beginning of the Confederacy but the difficulties of managing the project from beginning to end. The founders of the CSA may have talked a big game about liberty, but they were also quick to establish military tribunals and to deny habeus corpus to their citizenry. Davis portrays the CSA as being run by a cabal of rich land-owning farmers, which makes perfect sense when you think about why West Virginia seceded. At the end, the CSA was desperate to make any compromise of any principle to maintain power, right up to having the federal government attempt to negotiate an end to slavery to get British recognition. Needless to say, the government did not make this concession in consultation with the supposedly all-powerful states.

A no less important strength of the book is its coverage of the day-to-day depredations suffered by the CSA's citizens. The countryside was depleted of men and law-enforcement by the needs of the war, leaving many on the Confederate homefront vulnerable to marauding deserters. Significantly, Davis covers both the eastern and western Confederacy, taking a swipe at Virginia-centered Civil War historians who believe that the war was winnable by pointing out the early and devastating defeats suffered west of the mountains. With the Union blockade, these same people suffered greatly from a lack of available rations. But in mining the letters Confederate citizens sent to their government, Davis spends precious little time describing the plight of the slaves, who had suffered far more greatly in bondage than their owners did because of the war.

This is one of several areas William Davis does not investigate in the book. Jefferson Davis, for example, is mostly off-stage in the political dramas of the CSA; William Davis does little mining of the writings of Jefferson Davis and his close associates that would paint a more realistic picture of the man. This gives Davis the image of a relatively competent leader without delving into his own prickly personality or major mistakes. While Jefferson Davis is portrayed fairly positively, the positive values of his opponents are also glossed over in what essentially become right-versus-wrong contests on policy and military issues. Jeff Davis is almost never wrong, and the likes of Rhett are never right.

Because this book is about a narrow slice of the history of the Civil War, it may be difficult for novices to fully understand. Someone who doesn't already have a passing familiarity with the battles and course of the war will have difficulty as the book is mostly not chronological. This is not the story of Lee and Grant but of Davis and Rhett. Because of the obscurity of some of the figures involved, a listing of the major figures in the CSA with their positions would have been a big help in figuring out the who's who of the governors and Congressmen.

Overall, however, the book is well researched by an expert in the field and after the first 20 pages or so is a quick read. This is a superior work and anyone truly interested in Civil War history will emerge with a more profound understanding of the war after reading Look Away!

Chapter 1: Mind Your Heart

If you have heart disease, you are not alone. An astounding one in five people in this country has already suffered a heart attack or stroke, or has high blood pressure. One in two men, and one in three women, can expect to develop heart disease after age forty.

Fortunately, heart disease is largely preventable. By changing certain behaviors, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing heart disease or improve your chance of recovery if you've already had a heart attack. The game plan is deceptively simple: stop smoking, eat better, exercise regularly, and reduce stress. By following these steps, you will counter the major factors that put you at risk in the first place. And it's never too late -- or too early -- to start. No matter what your age, adopting healthy habits can significantly improve the health of your heart.

Of course, changing behaviors and habits -- and then maintaining that change -- is notoriously difficult. That is why our goal is to help you become more mindful of situations and behaviors that put you at risk, and then help you develop your own individual strategy for healthy change.

The advice we offer in this book should supplement any advice you receive from your primary care physician and other health care providers. Our intent is not to provide an alternative approach but one that complements traditional medicine. Although we encourage you to use the quizzes and exercises in this book to help you play a more active role in your health care, we also expect that you will continue to see your health care providers on a regular basis for medical care and checkups.

• The Three-Legged Stool

The advice we offer in this book is the same as what we provide to patients in our Cardiac Wellness Program. Like all the programs we offer through the Mind/Body Medical Institute, the Cardiac Wellness Program is based on the philosophy that optimal health care resembles a three-legged stool. One leg of the stool consists of medication. A second represents surgical intervention. The third signifies self-care, the strategies you employ to enhance your own natural capacity to heal. This third leg includes many of the techniques we'll discuss later on: the relaxation response, exercise, nutrition, and cognitive approaches (changing the way you think). Though all three legs of the stool have been validated through scientific research, all too often patients and physicians ignore the self-care leg. Disregarding self-care can result in a health care approach that is as wobbly and off-balance as, well, a two-legged stool.

Our goal in this book is to offer a more balanced approach. Not only will we address the physical aspects of your illness -- in this case, heart disease -- but we also hope to change the types of attitudes and behaviors that may be contributing to your symptoms. In the pages that follow, you will learn more about the various factors that increase your risk for heart disease and how to reduce that risk. Some, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, will sound familiar. We'll discuss the latest research findings and describe current medical and surgical treatments. But we'll spend most of our time discussing risk factors for heart disease, such as stress, depression, anger, hostility, decreased social support, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition.

We'll provide strategies to help you reduce stress and elicit the healing relaxation response. You will learn how to exercise to improve your heart health and how to prepare more nutritious meals. We also hope to help you discover how to become more mindful of the world around you and to view life in a more positive way.

These strategies are all based on the premise that mind and body are inextricably linked. You probably know about the mind/

body connection instinctively. Have you ever been embarrassed by something and felt your face flush? Have you ever found yourself stuck in traffic and become so angry that your heart beats fast and you breathe in short, quick bursts? Have you ever looked at a big piece of chocolate cake and felt your mouth water? Or felt your mood improve after taking a brisk walk on a sunny day? These are all examples of the mind/body connection at work.

• The Mind/Body Link

Mind/body medicine got its start in the late 1960s when researchers (including one of us, Dr. Herbert Benson) provided the first convincing evidence that it was possible to calm the body simply by quieting the mind. At the time, Dr. Benson was working with colleagues at Harvard Medical School to determine the causes and effects of high blood pressure. The researchers were conducting biofeedback experiments in monkeys to see if various rewards would raise or lower blood pressure and if punishment (which increased stress on the monkeys) would raise it. Several practitioners of transcendental meditation learned of Dr. Benson's work on stress and hypertension and visited him. They claimed that they could lower their own blood pressure by meditating.

The concept intrigued Dr. Benson, but he knew most of his Harvard colleagues would be skeptical. At the time, few believed that a link existed between stress and high blood pressure. But the meditation practitioners persisted, visiting Dr. Benson repeatedly. He finally agreed to take a series of physiological measurements to determine the effects of meditation on the body. As it happened, a separate team in California, led by Drs. Robert Keith Wallace and Archie F. Wilson, were simultaneously conducting related experiments. Both teams of researchers reached similar conclusions based on the physiological readings, and these findings have been confirmed and expanded in subsequent research: Meditation slows heart rate and breathing, reduces metabolism, lowers blood pressure, and even generates the type of brain waves associated with feeling peaceful and calm.

This state of deep relaxation counters the fight-or-flight response. When we are stressed, our heart rate and blood pressure increase dramatically, and adrenaline and other hormones surge through the body. This readies the body to either fight or flee in a situation where our survival depends on one response or the other. Though in the modern world most of us don't face truly life-threatening situations, even minor threats will trigger that same hormonal rush. What's more, even thinking about or recalling a stressful or threatening event can trigger the same chemical cascade. Over time all those chemicals and hormones build up, contributing to what may feel, physically, like a never-ending cycle of stress reactions.

Fortunately, the relaxation response is the physiological antithesis of the fight-or-flight response. This innate response decreases metabolism, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and muscle tension. You'll learn more about the relaxation response, and how to elicit it, in Chapter 3.

The findings about meditation and the relaxation response were just the first in a series of exciting insights into how the mind affects the body and vice versa. And while the field of mind/body medicine has evolved significantly in the last forty years, its basic premise remains straightforward: Maintaining good health requires that you attend to your mind as well as your body. Negative thoughts and moods can affect you physically, just as pain, stiff joints, and muscles can affect you emotionally. Quiet the mind, and you can calm the body; quiet the body, and you can calm the mind.

According to this philosophy, your health depends on the interplay of a number of factors. Maintaining your heart health means you have to consider blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and family history. But diet, physical activity, stress levels, and social interactions are also important.

• Assess Your Own Mind/Body Health

You will get the most out of this book if you make the information and advice relevant to your own situation. To do that, be sure to take the quizzes and self-assessment exercises we've included throughout.

A great way to get started is to determine where you are now in terms of your own mind/body health. Try doing the following four exercises. We're hoping that they will not only help you to learn something new about yourself, but will also motivate you to change behaviors that are putting your health -- physical, mental, and spiritual -- at risk.

Save your initial exercises, because at the end of the book we'll ask that you do them again. You may be pleasantly surprised at how your responses have changed! (To see how some of our patients changed after completing the Cardiac Wellness Program, see the "before" self-portraits on page 10 and "after" self-portraits on page 260. You may want to return to these exercises occasionally to keep yourself on track while trying to make changes in your life.

• Exercise 1: Draw a Self-Portrait

On a blank piece of paper, draw a picture of yourself. If you have heart disease or some other health condition, depict that in your picture -- as well as any treatments you are receiving. Then explain your drawing in a few sentences. (The object of this exercise is not to see whether you are artistic. You can draw a stick figure. It's the process that is most important.) We've included some sample "before" drawings below based on those made by our patients before starting our Cardiac Wellness Program. (For the corresponding "after" drawings, see page 260 in Chapter 9.)

• Exercise 2: Complete the Balance Exercise

Another tool we use in the Cardiac Wellness Program is based on the "Ten Loves" exercise developed by Dr. Sidney B. Simon, a leader in helping people to identify what they value and whether they need more balance in their lifestyles. In this exercise, list the five things that are most important, valuable, and meaningful to you. They can be personal, professional, or spiritual. Then ask yourself the following questions about each of these things:

• When did I do it last?

• Does my illness (or other demands on my time) interfere with my doing it?

• On a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being most important), how important is it to me?

• Exercise 3: Draw Your Time Pie

Now think about a typical day in your life. Draw a circle on a piece of paper and think of it as representing a twenty-four-hour day. Divide it into "pie" slices to represent how you typically spend your day. Label each slice with the activity and the number of hours or minutes you spend on it. We've included a sample time pie as an example. Obviously, your time pie may vary from one day to the next (weekdays may not resemble weekends, for example). Your particular time pie may also look different if you work nontraditional shifts, such as twelve-hour days.

Take a look at your pie. Is this the way you want to be spending a typical day? Are you spending enough time on the things you value and enjoy? Now draw your ideal time pie. How would your day look if you were living a more balanced life?

• Exercise 4: Establish Your Health Contract

Now think about some of the changes you'd like to make so that you can live a more heart-healthy life. In the Cardiac Wellness Program, we ask our patients to sign a health contract. The physical act of writing down specific goals somehow makes them seem more real -- and helps ensure that you will actually attain them. Use the following form to help you determine your own personal goals (and then revisit this form occasionally to see if you are making progress). Feel free to revise and personalize it so that you can focus on goals that are important to you.

GOAL 1: LEARN HOW TO BETTER MANAGE STRESS AND EMOTIONS IN DAILY LIFE.

• One Step at a Time

Mark Twain once wrote, "Habit is habit, and not to be flung out the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time."

Twain had it right. People often talk about "life-changing events," but though certain events may in fact be singular, happening at a particular time and place, change happens over time and takes practice and persistence. Change is also dynamic rather than static. It involves reflecting about your own particular circumstances and beliefs, learning about alternatives, making choices, developing skills, and then making readjustments along the way.

Making changes in behavior is possible no matter what your age, but we're not saying it will be easy. Let's face it, life in the twenty-first century is fast, furious, and frantic. Traffic is stalled, horns blare, E-mail waits, phones ring, deadlines loom. All these external demands and pressures can result in excess stress that worsens symptoms of your heart disease or prevents you from adopting heart-healthy behaviors. That's why we'll suggest real-world strategies that have worked for other people and that may also help you.

The main thing to remember is that change is a process that has to be attended to constantly. The first step, of course, is to identify barriers to change that may be negatively affecting your health, such as a perceived lack of time. The next step, or series of steps, involves setting realistic goals. And the third step is to choose strategies to move toward those goals. As you follow these strategies and adopt new behaviors, you will find the process becomes easier and feels more natural -- much like learning to ride a bike.

There is no "one size fits all" to change. You are unique, and you will have to discover the techniques that work for you. A key to our program is cognitive restructuring. The word cognitive refers to what you perceive and know about the world; cognitive therapy is based on the premise that much of what we find distressing originates in how we perceive or interpret an event, rather than in the event itself. And many times, our perceptions are negative, unrealistic, and distorted. We hope to help you perceive stress in a new, positive, and manageable way.

Congratulations! By picking up this book, you have taken the first step toward improving the health of your heart.

As health care professionals, we see people every day who are concerned about heart disease. Perhaps, like some of our patients, you are recovering from a heart attack or have experienced chest pain known as angina. You may be concerned that you are at risk for a heart attack or stroke because you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. If so, we think this book will provide helpful advice about how you can make changes, starting today, that will improve the health of your heart.

Mind Your Heart builds on the authors' more than thirty-five years of research and patient care. Here you will find, for the first time, a step-by-step guide to heart health that combines the latest information about stress management, nutrition, and exercise. This complements advice offered in earlier books by Dr. Herbert Benson, especially The Relaxation Response and The Wellness Book.

The strategies we describe in these pages are the same ones that we offer to patients in our Cardiac Wellness Program at the Mind/Body Medical Institute. The basic Cardiac Wellness Program lasts for thirteen consecutive weeks, during which participants attend weekly three-hour sessions. The Extended Cardiac Wellness Program lasts for twelve months and consists of thir-teen weekly three-hour sessions and eighteen bimonthly three-hour sessions. Many of our patients are referred to the clinic after being diagnosed with heart disease. Slightly more than half of our patients are men. Ages vary, but most people are between fifty-five and sixty years old when they enter our program.

The Cardiac Wellness Program is just one of several clinical programs that we offer at the Mind/Body Medical Institute. We also run programs to help people deal with infertility, insomnia, menopause, chronic pain, and general stress-related symptoms. Founded in 1988 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston, the Mind/Body Medical Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing scientific research, public education, and professional training in the field of behavioral medicine. This field, also known as mind/body medicine, aims to foster your own natural capacity to heal in a way that enhances more traditional medical approaches such as medication and surgery. At the Mind/

Body Medical Institute, we employ an interdisciplinary team of exercise physiologists, advanced practice nurses, dietitians, psychologists, and physicians who together have developed the techniques you will find in this book.

Of course, we realize that it is not easy to make changes in behavior and lifestyle. We also respect the fact that you are an individual. For both these reasons, we've included quizzes and exercises to help you identify your own particular risks as well as a number of strategies and techniques for behavior change, so that you can choose the ones you feel most comfortable with.

Thousands of people have already completed our mind/body programs and made significant changes in their lives. We hope that this book will provide a useful road map for you as you embark on your own journey of change. Happy reading!

I found the recipes to be authentic and I'm picky about Mexican recipes having been born and raised in the Southwest. I enjoyed that each recipe included a side note about the recipe or an ingredient within it. For example, the ceviche recipe side note included a brief discussion about its origins and the pork chops in adobo sauce side note described what Adobo seasoning is. These side notes provide great insight for both those familiar and unfamiliar with Mexican cooking. The cookbook does not have as many pages as other Williams-Sonoma cookbooks I own, its approximately 115 pages. Overall, it's a good addition to my extensive cookbook collection.

Mexican, for some reason, cooking can seem daunting - so many ingredients. This makes it easy breezy. The only thing I would have added would be a page listing all chilis, with their "heat" levels. But with the internet you can find this out, as I did. Makes me want to go out and buy fab dinnerware on which to plate these recipes. Hmmm.....another shopping trip via Amazon. Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy, by Carlos Eire

“Have mercy on me, Lord, I am Cuban.” In 1962, Carlos Eire was one of 14,000 children airlifted out of Havana—exiled from his family, his country, and his own childhood by Fidel Castro’s revolution. Winner of the National Book Award, this stunning memoir is a vibrant and evocative look at Latin America from a child’s unforgettable experience.

Waiting for Snow in Havana is both an exorcism and an ode to a paradise lost. For the Cuba of Carlos’s youth—with its lizards and turquoise seas and sun-drenched siestas—becomes an island of condemnation once a cigar-smoking guerrilla named Fidel Castro ousts President Batista on January 1, 1959. Suddenly the music in the streets sounds like gunfire. Christmas is made illegal, political dissent leads to imprisonment, and too many of Carlos’s friends are leaving Cuba for a place as far away and unthinkable as the United States. Carlos will end up there, too, and fulfill his mother’s dreams by becoming a modern American man—even if his soul remains in the country he left behind.

Narrated with the urgency of a confession, Waiting for Snow in Havana is a eulogy for a native land and a loving testament to the collective spirit of Cubans everywhere.

From Publishers Weekly
"Metaphors matter to me, especially perfect ones," Yale historian Eire writes in this beautifully fashioned memoir, as he recounts one of many wonderfully vibrant stories from his boyhood in 1950s Havana. As imaginatively wrought as the finest piece of fiction, the book abounds with magical interpretations of ordinary boyhood events-playing in a friend's backyard is like a perilous journey through the jungle; setting off firecrackers becomes a lyrical, cosmic opera; a child's birthday party turns into a phantasmagoria of American pop cultural icons. Taking his cue from his father, a man with "a very fertile, nearly inexhaustible imagination, totally dedicated to inventing past lives," Eire looks beyond the literal to see the mythological themes inherent in the epic struggle for identity that each of our lives represents. Into this fantastic idyll comes Castro-"Beelzebub, Herod, and the Seven-Headed Beast of the Apocalypse rolled into one"-overthrowing the Batista regime at the very end of 1958 and sweeping away everything that the author holds dear. A world that had been bursting with complicated, colorful meaning is replaced with the monotony of Castro's rhetoric and terrorizing "reform." Symbols of Jesus that had once provided spiritual enlightenment by popping up in the author's premonitions and dreams were now literally being demolished and destroyed by a government that has outlawed religion. The final cataclysm comes when Eire and his brother, still young boys, are shipped off to the United States to seek safety and a better life (another paradise, perhaps). They never see their father again. As painful as Eire's journey has been, his ability to see tragedy and suffering as a constant source of redemption is what makes this book so powerful. Where his father believed that we live many lives in different bodies, Eire sees his own life as a series of deaths within the same body. "Dying can be beautiful," he writes, "And waking up is even more beautiful. Even when the world has changed." Taking his cue from his beloved Jesus, the author believes that we repeatedly die for our sins and are reborn into a new awareness of paradise. How fortunate for readers, then, that by way of Eire's "confessions," they too will be able to renew their souls through his transcendent words.

From The New Yorker
At the start of the nineteen-sixties, an operation called Pedro Pan flew more than fourteen thousand Cuban children out of the country, without their parents, and deposited them in Miami. Eire, now a professor of history and religion at Yale, was one of them. His deeply moving memoir describes his life before Castro, among the aristocracy of old Cuba—his father, a judge, believed himself to be the reincarnation of Louis XVI—and, later, in America, where he turned from a child of privilege into a Lost Boy. Eire's tone is so urgent and so vividly personal (he is even nostalgic about Havana's beautiful blue clouds of DDT) that his unsparing indictments of practically everyone concerned, including himself, seem all the more remarkable.

From Booklist
Eire's complex, introspective memoir begins the day his world changed: when Castro's troops sent President Batista into exile far from Cuba in 1959. The son of a judge who believed himself to be Louis XVI reincarnated, Carlos, along with his older brother, Tony, spent his days playing with fireworks and lizards. He attended an elite school, where Batista's children were his classmates. Carlos' biggest worries were the disapproving stares he received from a portrait of Maria Theresa of Austria and Jesus, who would sometimes appear in the window to him. All of that changed when Castro came to power; suddenly, attending a prestigious school or driving a classy car was dangerous. The Eire family remained in Cuba even as others left, until finally Eire's parents sent Carlos and Tony to Florida, where a very different life awaited them. Years passed before their mother joined them, but Carlos never saw his father again. In this open, honest, and at times angry memoir, Eire bares his soul completely and captivates the reader in the process. Kristine Huntley

Memories, memories!
By J. Suarez
We hear the figure of six million dead Jews in the Hollocaust and we can't grasp it. We read Ann Frank and we weep. Sometimes tragedies that overwhelm us in macroeconomic terms, become reality when viewed through the eyes of one individual. Carlos Eire has been able to do this.

Like Mr. Eire I grew up in Havana in the 50's. I too was a Pedro Pan in the 60's. I too came without a penny and have been able to make my way in this wonderful new land. Each of his "facts" and memories correspond to my facts and memories of the same period. The book is as true to life as it can be for me and a great refresher for others who may have lived through similar times. For those not familiar with this period, the careful details he enumerates bring to life a society that has been gone for half a century. I commend the author on this great work.

Waiting for Snow in Havana - an immigrant's story. Review
By Anonymous
I thought the book was a bit long, and at times rambling, jumping back and forth between countries and times, but it is really a wonderful
story of a little boy who's life (at times hysterically funny, at others, incredibly sad) before, during and after Castro's revolution. After reading
this, it's easy to see why Cubans who live in Miami don't trust the current state of their old country under Fidel's brother's rule. The author was
very forthright about how he felt about The Revolution, and how it affected his Mother, who understood what was happening and did everything she could to get her two sons out of Cuba to have a better life, and his Father, who just couldn't give up what he knew and hated...I knew nothing about the author until I read about him at the end of the book. He is a real testament to immigrants who come to America, assimilate, and go on to achieve great things in life. It's an inspiring story, but just could have been a little shorter in length...the strength of his story wouldn't have been diminished.

Picture perfect view of an upper middle class youth living in ...
By R. jimenez
Picture perfect view of an upper middle class youth living in Havana's Miramar, son of a judge and a worrying Cuban mother, and attending the best social clubs like Havana Yacht Club. For someone like me, a Cuban, the scenes are familiar in the extreme, and Eire does a fantastic job of showing them to the reader. Carlos is the young kid growing up, and being a kid, together with friends who love firecrackers and hate lizards. The story is ultimately very humorous and insightful as to what Cubans of that generation were like although the author shows an intimate knowledge of what social strata were like, especially the pretense among white Cubans that blacks were not suffering discrimination in the country; it was a soft, benevolent discrimination. Fidel and Che come to the picture, and everyone in Havana, in Cuba, realizes there is snow in the North, the USA, and they wait for their turn to escape to the snow. I found this book irresistible, impossible to put down. Read it. You will not be sorry.

Mostly True: A Memoir of Family, Food, and Baseball, by Molly O'Neill

Molly O'Neill's father believed that baseball was his family's destiny. He wanted to spawn enough sons for an infield, so he married the tallest woman in Columbus, Ohio. Molly came out first, but eventually her father's plan prevailed. Five boys followed in rapid succession and the youngest, Paul O'Neill, did, in fact, grow up to be the star right fielder for the New York Yankees. In "Mostly True," celebrated food critic and writer O'Neill tells the story of her quintessentially American family and the places where they come together -- around the table and on the ball field. Molly's great-grandfather played on one of the earliest traveling teams in organized baseball, her grandfather played barnstorming ball, and her father pitched in the minor leagues, but after being sidelined with an injury in the war, he set his sights on the next generation. While her brothers raged and struggled to become their own men, Molly, appointed "Deputy Mom" at an age when most girls were playing with dolls, learned early how to be the model Midwestern homemaker and began casting about wildly for other possible destinies. As her mother cleaned fanatically and produced elaborate, healthy meals, Molly spoiled her bro-thers with skyscraper cakes, scribbled reams of poetry, and staged theatrical productions in the backyard. By the late 1960s, the Woodstock Nation had challenged some of the O'Neill values, but nothing altered their conviction that only remarkable achievement could save them. "Mostly True" is the uncommon chronicle of a regular family pursuing the American dream and of one girl's quest to find her place in a world built for boys. Molly O'Neill -- an independent, extraordinarily talented, and fiercely funny woman -- showed that home runs can be hit in many fields. Her memoir is glorious.

From Publishers Weekly
Former columnist for the New York Times and author of The New York Cookbook, O'Neill de-emphasizes the cooking element here in favor of cozy family gatherings around baseball games. Her memoir begins even before the courtship of her parents, minor leaguer "Chick" O'Neill and six-foot, convent-educated "Bootsie" Gwinn, in Columbus, Ohio, in 1945, and extends to younger brother Paul O'Neill's retirement as right-fielder for the Yankees in 2001. O'Neill meanders lovingly through years growing up as the eldest to five brothers who channeled their adolescent hormones into Little League. O'Neill records her first forays into cooking inspired by an Ohio Power and Electric Co. demonstration given for her Brownie troop; her brothers worshipped her for making dishes from Spam and processed cheese. In college, she secured jobs as a cook and took over the kitchen at Ciro's in Boston by 1979. Her cooking segued into writing, first for the Globe, then New York Newsday. By the time she became a restaurant critic for the Times in the early 1990s, younger brother Paul had been traded to the Yankees, bringing the whole unwieldy family to feast in New York. O'Neill charts a long-winded, pleasantly nostalgic trip. B&w photos. (May)

From Booklist
Former New York Yankee outfielder Paul O'Neill's big sister is definitely a writer: this reads like shards of family stories, each one burnished to a deep shine of memory and longing. It's not a family bio, exactly; although she writes of her parents and five younger brothers, each looms large and fades. She writes about being female and tall in her childhood home in Ohio; about what made her parents who they were; about each of the boys, especially golden-haired baby Paulie. She writes, with offhand elegance and bone-deep humor, about the food of the Midwest, her mother's food, and the food she learned to cook later, in Provincetown and in Paris. Although it starts rather dreamily and slowly, the book's final chapters, chronicling more recent times--with her as the food writer for the New York Times and Paul as the baseball warrior for the New York Yankees--are like listening to a friend you want to know better reminisce about her incredibly engaging and engaged life. Anyone interested in any of the words of the subtitle will find much to enjoy. GraceAnne DeCandido

Review
"A few years ago, New York was the beneficiary of two exceptional members of the O'Neill family of Columbus, Ohio -- Molly, the gifted food writer of the "Times," and Paul, the fiercely competitive right fielder of the New York Yankees. Those of us who love both food and baseball often wondered what kind of family produced siblings who had excelled in such different fields. Now, thanks to Molly's delicious memoir, "Mostly True," we have the answer -- the story of uncommon parents and their exceptional family. A vote here for Molly as this year's O'Neill family MVP."-- David Halberstam, author of "The Education of a Coach" and "The Teammates"

A Warm Look Back
By olingerstories
For anyone who grew up around Columbus, OH in the 60s and 70s, Molly O'Neill's MOSTLY TRUE is a must read. It is the story of surviving four brothers, including the future Red and Yankee Paul, who were sports obsessed. Molly endures little league baseball games, the lack of a social life, and the sameness of growing up in the most middle America of towns, Columbus.

In college at Denison, she mirrors the mood of the time. She swings, but
realizes that she also has to eat. The talent that she has is what her mother taught her about cooking. What seemed so boring in her youth now was a talent recognizable to all.

After graduation she heads east and enters into a start-up restaurant. She makes mistakes, learns how hard it is to make a go of it in the restaurant world and eventually ends up in New York. Here her fame arrives at she becomes a famed food critic.

Still, the glue to the whole narrative is her and her family, including her famous little brother, Paul. I absolutely loved this book.

A woman find her way through her passion
By Diane
Molly is the oldest O'Neill child, followed in succession by five boys in the 1950s and 1960s. They grew up in Columbus, Ohio, a close-knit crew, and much of their lives revolved around baseball (like mine growing up). Her dad loved baseball and encouraged his sons to play the game; youngest son Paul grew up to play for the legendary New York Yankees (and before that, the Cincinnati Reds, a team close enough to home for his parents to watch him play often).

Anyone from a big family will relate to Molly's memories of growing up in a big family. Molly's attitude towards food came from her parents, who had a different idea than many people at that time. Columbus was (and still is) the test-market capital for food products. Grocery stores were filled with product samplers, while ubiquitous today, were not found in may places in the Unites States back then.

The O'Neill's, however, did not serve their children pot pies or macaroni and cheese or tuna noodle casserole or even meat loaf. Her parents "practiced a separation of food groups. We had meat. We had potato. We had vegetable. We had salad. We had dessert.. Each was distinct and none was overcooked. It was humiliating."

Molly first became interested in cooking when she was trying to lose weight. She joined a weight loss support group because her brother mercilessly teased her about having unidentifiable kneecaps. There, a woman gave her a cookbook and Molly started cooking for herself because her mother would not make a separate meal for her. Soon Molly ditched the low calorie cooking and moved on to making recipes out of Julia Child for her grateful family.

She went to college in Massachusetts, became a feminist, wrote poetry and helped to start a feminist, humanist, vegetarian restaurant. As the women who ran the restaurant began to become more and more militant about what could be served, Molly became more creative with ways to make broth without any trace of beef and ways to use tofu.

After college, she settled in Provincetown, working at many restaurants. I loved reading about how Molly got her hands-on education, how she fought for her place in the male-dominated kitchens. Surely growing up with male siblings helped her here.

Molly gained a reputation, and a following, and soon two of her brothers followed her into the business. She got them jobs and they all cooked together.

Eventually Molly went to Paris to learn how to make desserts, she became friends with her neighbor Julia Child, she moved to New York and ended up a New York Times restaurant critic and a famous cookbook author.

Paul was playing for the Yankees while Molly was living in New York, so she spent many games sitting in the stands watching him and her father, who was so thrilled to have a son playing Major League baseball. Molly's mom was thrilled to be able to shop in New York.

This is a book for anyone who is fascinated by food, family and yes, baseball. But it is much more. It is the story of a woman finding her way through her passion and I absolutely loved it. I know I will read this one again and again.

Hello Columbus :)
By Anthony Pierulla
Born in Columbus, raised with baseball, and just returning from my first trip to Paris. Could I have found a work more timely?

Sometimes you find excellent reads in the most unexpected places; a semi-cook book for crying out loud and one I purchased for my Columbus cousins no less.

Thumbing through the first few pages I was trapped in a presentation of butterfly proportions. Yea her brother Paul played in four World Series with the Yankees and one with the Reds but he really doesn't enter until the last fifty pages.

So I began by thinking where is Paul, after a while it didn't matter because Molly's writing is a homer all by itself and better yet I get to watch Paul come on the scene along with his brothers, family and Columbus.

Only having lived in the capital of Ohio my first year and visiting several times in my youth, my memories of it were foggy and quaint, however, growing up with the O'Neills those youthful day all came roaring back in vivid colors and the sweet vibrations of a pre-teen.

Beyond this traveling to the Cape, the City, and Paris was extra, her rebellions (with unexpected revelations) lent zest to the journey. Indeed Philip Roth has nothing on this lady, if fact when reading this the references to her cousin, Mark Twain, were thought only to be in jest, later in reading a review I found that she is really Mr. Clement's cousin. I then realized why _Life on the Mississippi_ kept flashing through my mind while I enjoyed the work. Molly can describe a situation and you honestly feel you are right there with her.

Ok Paul you are the "ultimate warrior," but I really think Molly's way of presenting a story is a lot more fun than watching a pitcher constantly throw over to first to hold you on base.
