Ernest Hemingway Selected Letters 1917-1961 (Scribner Classics), by Ernest Hemingway

The death of Ernest Hemingway in 1961 ended one of the most original and influential careers in American literature. His works have been translated into every major language, and the Nobel Prize awarded to him in 1954 recognized his impact on contemporary writing.
While many people are familiar with the public image of Hemingway and the legendary accounts of his life, few knew him as an intimate. With this collection of letters, presented for the first time as a Scribner Classic, a new Hemingway emerges. Ranging from 1917 to 1961, this generous selection of nearly six hundred letters is, in effect, both a self-portrait and an autobiography. In his own words, Hemingway candidly reveals himself to a wide variety of people: family, friends, enemies, editors, translators, and almost all the prominent writers of his day. In so doing he proves to be one of the most entertaining letter writers of all time.
Carlos Baker has chosen letters that not only represent major turning points in Hemingway's career but also exhibit character, wit, and the writer's typical enthusiasm for hunting, fishing, drinking, and eating. A few are ingratiating, some downright truculent. Others present his views on writing and reading, criticize books by friend or foe, and discuss women, soldiers, politicians, and prizefighters. Perhaps more than anything, these letters show Hemingway's irrepressible humor, given far freer rein in his correspondence than in his books. An informal biography in letters, the product of forty-five years' living and writing, Ernest Hemingway: Selected Letters leaves an indelible impression of an extraordinary man.
Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1899. At seventeen he left home to join the Kansas City Star as a reporter, then volunteered to serve in the Red Cross during World War I. He was severely wounded at the Italian front and was awarded the Croce di Guerra. He moved to Paris in 1921, where he devoted himself to writing fiction, and where he fell in with the expatriate circle that included Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, and Ford Madox Ford. His novels include The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929), To Have and Have Not (1937), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), and The Old Man and the Sea (1952). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. He died in Ketchum, Idaho, on July 2, 1961.

A look behind the curtain!
By Palle E T Jorgensen
I miss old fashioned letters, now that we live in the age of email. Frotunately, I still have 'real' letters saved that have now collected dust from my parent's generation, and from a time gone by.

Occasionally I stumble over published letters of famous writers in antique bookstores: Last time, it was a 800 page volume of some of Ernest Hemingway's personal letters; the first edition of this Amazon edition. They were published posthumeously, and not intended by EH for publication.

We get a peek behind the curtain, and learn among other things that Ernest Hemingway was addicted to letters, wrote lots and lots, starting in his teens; and that he was really depressed when he didn't receive replies; or when there were days when the postman brought no letters. Waiting for transatlantic mail added to his sense of loneliness. Letters were a lifelong passion of his, continuing up to the day when he took his own life. These private letters weren't meant to be published, and they are raw, but very honest.

When you read them, you are in no doubt that the writer is a true artist, and an original!

They stretch over the span of his productive life, and they are varied: addressed to family (his parents, his children), his ex, to friends, including famous contemporaries, such as Marlene Dietrich (just one of them), his agent(s), his publishers, and many more.

I have a hunch EH must have been hard to keep up with, but his letters are fun to read; even though, in my view, his novels are mixed: Some great, and some I don't care for.

Guess, EH's life was bizare too. The private letters are consistent with that. And yet, they exude a special warmth; both gentelness and passion.

As fascinating as any novel or story he wrote...
By M. Wilson
This collection of letters serves as the closest thing to a Hemingway autobiography we have. It is certainly must reading for the student or researcher, and I would highly recommend it for even the casual Hemingway fan.
Hemingway often wrote letters to either warm up for a day of writing or cool off afterward, and in these letters you see him at his unguarded, intellectual, humorous best. The style of his letter writing is often much freer than the tightly crafted prose style of his fiction...it's almost like watching a classical musician break into some improvisational jazz.
A great book to just dip into wherever you want, and this new edition is long overdue.

A writer's writer
By Old Man Reader
Two authors of the 20th century whose letters go beyond fascination are James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway. This volume is an excellent example of just how committed Hemingway was not only to writing, but to getting as close to the action of his writing. Once the reader emerses themselves into his letters, one sees the true Hemingway, not the mythological one created by critics (mostly those who were not fans of the writer).

It is almost unimaginable that someone in his time or any other could be so well connected and intimate with other artist: Joyce, Pound, McLeish, Fitzgerald, Picaso, and so on. If you're a writer this collection is wonderful. It shows the day to day dealings with drafting, editing, publishing, and the intimate relationships between writer and publisher, though this relationship is almost non-existent today.

I found Hemingway through his letters to be someone who is passionate about life and equally compassionate about friends. He tells it the way it is, not the way politically correct messengers do. It is an education in itself to read this collection.

He told me one time: "I'm a poet, not a singer."
By D. Reinstein
I became a Dylan fan in the early 60's. While In Junior College and working for the student newspaper, I was assigned the task of interviewing him - without an appointment - when he came to perform in the town where that JC was. I grabbed a tape recorder, sat with some friends to create a short list of questions we thought would be fun for him to respond to - and on the assigned evening, I set out to interview him.

I made it to the security gate where I was summarily turned away. Thinking myself clever, I argued, joked and tried to talk my way in - and failed. So, I sat outside (I had no ticket to the show itself) until it was over - then, some three hours after I first arrived, I recognized Dylan, surrounded by a small army of devotees and sycophants, coming out of the stage door. Bravely, I approached him - tape recorder turned on and microphone in hand - trying to remember just one of the many clever questions my friends and I had concocted. All I could get to come out was, "Hi! I'm from the local J.C. Would you please say something about yourself?" He actually stopped, looked at me (I think) through VERY dark glasses and said, clear as a bell, "I'm a poet - not a singer." I believe this volume demonstrates that rather nicely.

On first hearing me play a Dylan album, my dad, who had never - so far as I know - spent one day on a farm, said "That sounds like a lamb with his gonads caught in a barbed wire fence." Maybe he was right. The beauty of this volume is that it is unfettered with music - either written or sung. Just as the title says, it is "Lyrics".... words .... poems..... stories told in certain rhythm and meter. As such, they read purely - without the attempt to convey them as 'song' or himself as a 'singer.' I read the book from cover to cover and actually use it as a lyric book to create my own versions of the lyrical tales he told that are recorded here.

Some are simple: some complex: some perhaps deliberately confusing, inconsistent and mind-twisting. Others are basic - a few even 'sweet' and naively young. Some angry, some narrative, more than a few visionary. But whatever else they are or are not, they are poems - each and every one of them - and, as such, I believe they stand on their own ... without the music he gave them - mostly, as I understand it, after the fact.

Read this way, as a poetic autobiography, I think those interested - or even enamored- with Bob Dylan and his work, will find this volume to be a real treasure trove of pure expressiveness. It has already achieved a special place - in my library, in front of me while I have a guitar in hand - or simply in my lap, as I read and try to appreciate the purist Dylan we have to remember the times, and perhaps ourselves, with.

Essential for any serious music fan
By Paul Allaer
I'm not a native English speaker (moved to the US 20+ years ago) and one of the annoying things of Bob Dylan albums is that, for whatever reason, they don't come with the lyrics to the songs. I'm a big Dylan fan, and as much as I enjoy listening to the albums, I've always wanted to better understand the lyrics. Well, consider that problem solved with this book.

"Lyrics 1962-2001" is the solution to my problem, a 600 page (hard cover) book, containing the lyrics to all Bob Dylan's songs. The book is arranged album-by-album, and song-by-song within those albums, and contains in addition the words to other songs that were not originally on any album.

Bob Dylan towers over the music scene like few others, and his word-crafting has no equal. This book is essential, not just for Bob Dylan fans, but for any serious music lover. I bought this book from Amazon.com, for a mere $27 (S/H included), 40% off the cover price, one of the best bargains ever. "Strongly recommended" doesn't do justice, this is simply essential.

Shakespeare who?
By Chad J. Whittle
Are you kidding? This is the modern day Shakespeare, Bob Dylan. This book is a mammoth collection of all of Dylan's songs. Stripped of Dylan's voice, guitar and harmonica, these lyrics show just how great Dylan's poetry is. Even his mediocre songs suffering from bad vocal or musical arrangement show Dylan's wit and genius on every line. A must own for all Dylan and poetry enthusiasts. Also recommended with this book is Christopher Rick's Dylan's Visions of Sin.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1976, a Paris wine shop arranged a tasting as a gimmick to introduce some California wines; the judges, of course, were all French and militantly chauvinistic. Only one journalist bothered to attend, a Time correspondent, looking for a possible American angle. The story he got turned out to be a sensation. In both red and white blind tastings, an American wine won handily: a 1973 Stag's Leap cabernet and a 1973 Chateau Montelena chardonnay. When the story was published the following week, it stunned both the complacent French and fledgling American wine industries—and things have never been the same since. Taber, the Time man, has fashioned an entertaining, informative book around this event. Following a brisk history of the French-dominated European wine trade with a more detailed look at the less familiar American effort, he focuses on the two winning wineries, both of which provide him with lively tales of colorful amateurs and immigrants making good, partly through willingness to experiment with new techniques. While the outrage of some of the judges is funny, this is a serious business book, too, sure to be required reading for American vintners and oenophiles. Photos.

From Booklist
In 1976, a Paris-based British wine merchant, Steven Spurrier, organized a blind tasting of California and French wines in honor of the bicentennial of the American Revolution. With labels hidden from view, French wine experts in attendance at Spurrier's event pronounced the California wines generally superior to those from France. Some judges professed to be unable even to discern which wines were French and which American. Media reports of this tasting sent shockwaves throughout the wine world. Thirty years after the event, this seems very old news, but at the time it marked an absolute revolution in taste and in expectations. California's wine industry took off, commanding ever-higher prices and attracting even more talent. French wineries were forced to innovate and find better ways to market their formerly unrivalled bottlings. Taber expands on the events leading up to this celebrated event with a readable, concise history of wine making in America, recounting the long journey from sweet, sacramental concord grape wines to today's range of sophisticated offerings. Review
"Here's the inside tale of the dramatic tasting session that transformed the wine industry. George Taber was the only reporter there, and he tells the tale with the same authority, depth and clarity of the American wines that won. His tale has fascinating characters, great locales, and a fine bouquet."
-- Walter Isaacson, author of Benjamin Franklin

"For those of us who were lucky enough to be part of the fun at Steven Spurrier's wine shop in Paris, this book is a trip down memory lane. For everyone else, Taber brings the event to life brilliantly with insightful portraits and a reporter's eye for telling detail."
-- Don and Petie Kladstrup, authors of Wine & War

"Nearly thirty years later, Taber's book outlines an historic event that is relevant, captivating and compelling -- even for non-wine aficionados. The petty wine war that the Paris Tasting set off had one big winner: good wine. And one big loser: good wine...from France."
-- Christian Vannequé, Former chief sommelier at the Tour d'Argent restaurant in Paris and one of the judges at the Paris Tasting

"George Taber was alone among journalists to attend the wine world's Declaration of Independence from French supremacy. He tells the story of the California wine revolution with verve showing how the upstarts managed to surprise the complacent French. This is a rare book about wine to be sipped, not gulped."
-- William Echikson, author of Noble Rot

"The Judgment of Paris is a fascinating recounting of that historic event that was like a lightning rod to the budding wine scene in California. It is a must read for anyone interested in wine."
-- Daniel Johnnes, Wine Director Montrachet and President Daniel Johnnes Wines

"Spirited, intelligent, and a deliciously entertaining good read. Essential for anyone who has ever enjoyed a good bottle of California wine."
-- Anthony Dias Blue, Executive Director of the San Francisco International Wine Competition

"I devoured Judgment of Paris and it is dazzling -- reads like a thriller, with the added benefit that the scholarship is impeccable too!"
-- Orley Ashenfelter, the Joseph Douglas Green 1895 Professor of Economics at Princeton University and Publisher of Liquid Assets: The International Guide to Fine Wines

Becoming a Wine Snob
By C. Gottlieb
What an amazing story written by the only media person to attend the competition. Now the truth is out! It is not only a book about the competition between the young California vineyards agains the old and established French, it is a history lesson in how CA wines came to be, key players and the struggles to learn what the French have been doing through generations. The author also writes about wines and vineyards around the world completing the global tastes of wine drinking that we are so fortunate to be part of. I went right away with the names of the wines and their respective wineries to taste them all. I now have been spending a fortune on wines! and each one is fabulous! I have been to some of the French wineries that were part of the competition, now I have to start on Napa! I did learn something important.... Stag's Leap and Stags' Leap are not the same winery! It is not just a typo........ buyer beware! GREAT read! I would highly recommend if you want to learn about this event and the history of CA wines and how they became a world player.

Great book that shows in reality the impact of technology ...
By LSBerg
Great book that shows in reality the impact of technology on wine-making. Loved to hear the story of how Napa and California started the wine journey, and the best part, you can visit the wineries yourself!
Also a good tale to those who think name and traditional will go unchallenged.
Finally if you dream of opening a winery in the future, this is a must read.

Northern California Winemaking
By Seniorita
The book presents a good description of the wine making process and its technical evolution. It doesn't go too far into the chemistry or test methods -- for that, get a textbook. It stands as an account of how the California wine business developed and the personalities involved. The book is rather a scattershot in format. Lots of small stories, loosely woven.

Meridon (The Wideacre Trilogy), by Philippa Gregory

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Other Boleyn Girl comes the final book of the extraordinary Wideacre trilogy as the heir to the great estate comes home at last.

Meridon knows she does not belong in the dirty, vagabond life of a gypsy bareback rider. The half-remembered vision of another life burns in her heart, even as her beloved sister, Dandy, risks everything for their future. Alone, Meridon follows the urgings of her dream, riding in the moonlight past the rusted gates, up the winding drive to a house—clutching the golden clasp of the necklace that was her birthright—home at last to Wideacre. The lost heir of one of England’s great estates would take her place as its mistress...

Meridon is a rich, impassioned tapestry of a young woman’s journey from dreams to glittering drawing rooms and elaborate deceits, from a simple hope to a deep and fulfilling love. Set in the savage contrasts of Georgian England—a time alive with treachery, grandeur, and intrigue—Meridon is Philippa Gregory’s masterwork.

From Publishers Weekly
With this elaborate tapestry of a young woman's life, the Lacey family trilogy ( Wideacre and The Favored Child ) comes to a satisfying conclusion. Meridon is the lost child whose legacy is the estate of Wideacre. She and her very different sister, Dandy, were abandoned as infants and raised in a gypsy encampment, learning horsetrading and other tricks of survival. They are indentured to a circus master whose traveling show is made successful by Meridon's equestrian flair and Dandy's seductive beauty on the trapeze. Meridon's escape from this world is fueled by pregnant Dandy's murder and her own obsessive dream of her ancestral home. After claiming Wideacre, Meridon succumbs for a while to the temptation of the "quality" social scene, but eventually she comes to her senses, and, in a tricky card game near the end of the saga, triumphs fully. The hard-won homecoming in this historical novel is richly developed and impassioned. Doubleday Book Club alternate.

Did VC Andrews ghost write this?
By barkydog
I have to believe that either Philippa Gregory did not write this terrible excuse for a novel, or she magically morphed into a wonderful writer later in life. Another reviewer said something to the effect that if she wanted a poorly written novel about a weird incestuous relationship she would stick with VC Andrews and I couldn't agree more. Long winded, boring, predictable, and featuring far too many gross detailed descriptions of a tawdry affair between a bother and sister, Wideacre is topped off by a corny ending that leaves you thinking "I just wasted weeks of my life reading 600 pages for this?" If you loved The White Queen, if you couldn't put down The Other Boleyn Girl, then Wideacre is not for you. If I were Philipa Gregory I would spend my fortune hunting down and destroying every last copy of this dreadful book. I would give it 0 stars if that were an option.

A Much Better Book Than the Ratings Suggest
By B. Martin
There are over 200 reviews so of course I won't rehash the plot, and I don't know if this review will ever even be read since it is so far down the line. However I was shocked by the low ratings. From what I can gather this author has a wide following with her later books. Wideacre was her first book, the first of a trilogy and the first book of hers I have read. Since I came to this novel with no previous expectations based on her later work I was able to enjoy it very much since I had no preconceptions. This is definately a saga, and will not be something for everyone since it does have an incestuous relationship, but that is not the core nor the heart of the novel. At its heart this is the story of how far a determined, unwavering woman will go to secure for herself the land that she loves. That doesn't sound like a bad thing but it becomes one when her desire for the land blinds her to the consequences of her increasingly horrid actions. I would like to say a lot more about this absorbing novel but I don't want to reveal to much.. I hate spoilers in reviews!
I guess I will content myself by saying please don't be put off this book by the negative reviews from people who came to this story with preconceived notions. It is absorbing, masterfully written and darkly fascinating. It sort of reminds me of Through A Glass Darkly which was published in the late 80's I think and has a devoted "cult" following. Also, if you like Anne Rivers Siddons I think you will like this book as well. Even though Siddons books are on the surface nothing like this one (place, time periods etc.) the dark heart of Ruth Yancey Fox from her brilliant novel Foxes Earth can be felt in Beatrice Lacey the anti-heroine of Wideacre.
I very much loved this book and hope that one more positive review may encourage more readers to take a chance on it.
A side note for Kindle readers.....ugh the scan from print to ebook format made for lots of errors. Nothing that takes away from the joy of reading the book, but punctuation errors are pervasive.

Thoroughly displeased
By Emily K. Stuart
SPOILERS HERE!!!! I loved the Wideacre triology....at least the first two books. Despite the perversions and depravaties of the first two books, I was enthralled and I couldn't wait to round out the trilogy with Meridon.

But, Meridon disappointed. I read one review that said that the biggest mistake was that most of the book didn't take place at Wideacre. I didn't think that would bother me - after all, we'd heard about Wideacre for enarly 1200 pages at this point. But, it's true. This book feels completely different without Wideacre. And though you understand why Meridon is not there, you never quite get the feeling that you're continuing the story. Even when Meridon finds her way to Wideacre, it's magic is lost of me - and I can think of is how stupid a character she is.

Due to her rough life, Meridon is not a warm creature. She is not kind or have the same love of the land. She only wants it to want something that's hers. When she engages herself to Perry against James' wishes, I knew I wasn't going to be pleased with the end result. Anyone could've seen that she was going to be taken. And though you see a real spark between herself and Will, it never really comes to a true passionate head, as it should (and I don't mean sex!) - given that Meridon has never known passion - physical or emotional. When she and Will finally get together, it just, sort of happens. There's no real buildup. Then, once she has given away the land to Will and the corporation, you can't believe it's just all that easy over and done with.

I advise that if you are a fan of Wideacre and The Favored Child, do read Meridon and round out the trilogy. But, don't be expecting the amazing fire and passion that came with the first two. THe magic of Wideacre certainly wasn't in this book.

Make Your Creative Dreams Real: A Plan for Procrastinators, Perfectionists, Busy People, and People Who Would Really Rather Sleep All Day

"I wanted to write a book to help all the creative dreamers make their creative dreams even more real....I have a lot to share about struggle and success, and the long flat places in between. My experiences as a recovering procrastinator and perfectionist give me a keen understanding of how they work to delay creative dreams (and why that's sometimes a good thing). I admit my 'splendid imperfections' because I know that my mistakes and stumblings can be of use to others." -- From the Introduction SARK (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) has lived one of her creative dreams by transforming herself from a struggling artist into a bestselling author, artist, and creative spiritualist. She is actively working with her other dreams, and she tells readers that making dreams real is not only about making dreams come true but also about living with all that is real about life -- the disappointments, frustrations, progress, quitting, and fulfillment. Now she tells readers how they can live their dreams in a guide that is practical, inspirational, realistic, and as inventive as only SARK can be. Whether your dream is to write a book or plant a garden, open a bed and breakfast or get a degree, help children with cancer or star in a musical, SARK guides you step-by-step on a journey toward making your dream REAL. Are you wondering just what your creative dream is? SARK puts you in a "dream activator" state of mind and helps you figure it out. Are you lost in the Land of No? SARK can help you work with your fear and negativity, live with and transform procrastination and perfectionism, communicate with inside and outside critics, and work with inertia. Do you have a dream but it seemsoverwhelmingly impossible? SARK's famous microMOVEment technique will help you make your creative dream journey in tiny yet powerful steps. Need inspiration? Read the stories of others who are making their creative dreams real. Having difficulty fitting your dream into your real life? Let SARK show you how to think differently about time and find resources in unexpected places and people. To begin, choose one of two tables of contents: one for the logical or linear mind that follows the steps in order or one for the more abstract thinker who would prefer to play the system like a game. No matter which path your journey follows, you'll encounter SARK's whimsical humor and tender understanding of human foibles, extensive resource sections, and lots of exercises that will help you get unstuck, activate creativity, and put plans into juicy action. Make Your Creative Dreams Real is the all-in-one book for everyone who has ever wanted to live a more deeply creative and satisfying life.

From Publishers Weekly
For those of us who pass our days in a meaningless miasma of obligations and responsibility, SARK's upbeat 12-step prescription for "making creative dreams" come true may be just the ticket. Designing the book herself, SARK (short for Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy, author of Succulent Wild Woman) applies function to form with big and small font sizes, wild and wavy typesetting, drawings scattered liberally throughout, various exercises, Mad Lib-like blanks to fill in ("choose a micromovement and write it here_____") and three 16-page full-color inserts (not seen by PW). In case you doubt SARK's enthusiasm for her version of the creative life, she includes testimonials ranging from "John, Teacher" to "Val, Expressive Arts Therapist." Despite SARK's admirably unrestrained support for the creative life, it's difficult not to cock a cynical eye at some of her suggestions, such as "let your dream vehicle out to play!" And while she encourages us to "feel free to color or draw in this book," there isn't actually all that much room to do so. SARK addresses the negativity toward creativity that so many artists face from family, schools and bosses, but the repetition of the word "dream" never quite seems to slide over into how to use it to tend an actual artistic career.

Get your creativity brewing
By Venus A. Rachal
I love this book. What made this book so special for me was that it doesn't make false promises. It shows you how to open up your creativity, step-by-step and allows you to be a human being.

Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy (SARK) is so honest about what it takes to be a creative person and how we stumble often through the process. We make mistakes. We give up. We start over again. There is no illusion here about becoming this perfect creative, intuitive person. The truth is that person is rare or not real. Susan tells us, "This book is to be a book that fits in with your real life--not an idealized version of it...[it's for those of us] who are busy, avoiding, practicing procrastinators and perfectionists."

Some days you don't want to get out of bed. You don't want to think about writing your Great American Novel or painting your Van Goh-esque masterpiece. Instead, you want to procrastinate, cuddle up in your blanket and eat cookies. Or, maybe you want to beat yourself up for not finishing sooner. Whatever your process is, it doesn't matter, everything is okay.

When things get tough, SARK recommends practicing micro-movements. These are ultra tiny steps that get you going in the right direction. They don't require a lot of time or energy but they help you keep going. And once you've done a few of them, big changes can happen.

You'll also see inspiring stories of other creatives and how they live their dreams and what they think about it. And you'll disover that some creative dreams have nothing to do with art but are about making the world better or about having a fulfilled life. This is okay too!

Maybe you want to explore what stops or has stopped your creative dreams or you might want to look at all the ways you can start to say YES to yourself and your dream. SARK says, "Often resistance feels like an unscalable wall, when there are actually footholds all over the place." This book is one of those footholds.

Like all of SARK's books, Make Your Creative Dreams Real is wildly inventive and filled with curious doodles, paintings, and inspiring words and resources. Every chapter has an exercise that you can do and a list of different resources (websites and books) which can help you through whatever stage you are in.

Remember, "Your dreams need you to make them real."

Artsy Self-Help for Procrastinators
By Linda Painchaud-Steinman
This book marked the first time I've read any of Sark's work. I was impressed by her honesty and her gentle encouragement.

Her artwork was a bit "kindergarten" for my taste, buy hey, I'm no art critic!

I rate the book 5 stars because I think a month-by-month plan that is non-demanding and easy to implement will work for most people but especially for procrastinators.

Some of the other reviews have said SARK'S writing is repetitive in this book and that may be true. As I said, I haven't read any of her other books. Perhaps you won't find any benefit if you've read her previous work.

But if you're new to her writing, as I was, you will probably enjoy and benefit from her plan.

Your Dreams need You to Make Them Real
By T SANTOSO
This is a good book, and everyone should read it. SARK is one of the few favourite writers of mine. I think she makes it easy for everyone to feel good and smile.

SARK books usually are all hand written and colored, this one is part handwritten and pictured and part typed. It makes the materials more abundance that previous books ( at least 3 times as much ), and still give you a genuine "taste of SARK".

For those who have never read SARK (the CEO, executives, management people, etc), try to dive into a different type of book, go read SARK, it is a different type of "self help" book (labelling is such a pain, what is self help? aren't all book self help?).

The book is about DREAMS, and DREAMS PERSUANCE. as one quote in the book said: "HOLD FAST TO DREAMS, FOR IF DREAMS DIE, LIFE IS A BROKEN-WINGED BIRD THAT CAN NOT FLY" (Langston Hughes).

SARK inspire me to start drawing (what is a 44 years old CEO who have started so many new ventures want to do with Drawing?), her drawing is so simple (the feel is like "i can do that!") yet so vibrant and inspiring.

Caution: Not all part of the book will be in sync with your believe system and your way of seeing life. Then again, what kind of books can make you one hundred percent relevant? If you can take, read, apply some part of the books and see the world in a different light, then it will already be more that enough.

What stops you: get the book, find your dreams, and make them real. I hope i can induce you to try SARK for the first time and i believe you will find it worth reading.

one idea: give this book as a souvenir to a friend, it will be a gift well remembered.

Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston (Lisa Drew Books (Paperback)), by Valerie Boyd

From critically acclaimed journalist Valerie Boyd comes an eloquent profile of one of the most intriguing cultural figures of the twentieth century—Zora Neale Hurston.

A woman of enormous talent and remarkable drive, Zora Neale Hurston published seven books, many short stories, and several articles and plays over a career that spanned more than thirty years. Today, nearly every black woman writer of significance—including Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker—acknowledges Hurston as a literary foremother, and her 1937 masterpiece Their Eyes Were Watching God has become a crucial part of the modern literary canon.

Wrapped in Rainbows, the first biography of Zora Neale Hurston in more than twenty-five years, illuminates the adventures, complexities, and sorrows of an extraordinary life. Acclaimed journalist Valerie Boyd delves into Hurston’s history—her youth in the country’s first incorporated all-black town, her friendships with luminaries such as Langston Hughes, her sexuality and short-lived marriages, and her mysterious relationship with vodou. With the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Depression, and World War II as historical backdrops, Wrapped in Rainbows not only positions Hurston’s work in her time but also offers riveting implications for our own.

From Library Journal
This study of the influential African American novelist/folklorist by the arts editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is billed as the first definitive biography.

From The New Yorker
The novelist, folklorist, and playwright Zora Neale Hurston lived a life easily equal to the drama of her best novels. Although her ambitions took her far from the all-black town of Eatonville, Florida, where she grew up, her intellectual and emotional roots remained in its watery environs, where telling tall tales was a way of life. She told a few tall tales herself, especially in her autobiography, "Dust Tracks on a Road." But what can lying about one's age or about how many husbands one had matter in the face of having escaped Eatonville to study at Barnard? Hurston's significance as an anthropologist should not be underestimated. She made her readers see the uniqueness of black American speech by printing it the way it was said. Boyd is too laudatory in her approach, but this is a convincing attempt to make sense of a life that continues to defy categorization.

From Booklist
Zora Neale Hurston's preacher father believed that she was "too spirited and too mouthy for her own good," reports eloquent first-time biographer Boyd in this engrossing cornerstone biography of the brilliant, inspired, and courageous African American anthropologist and writer. Born in 1891, Hurston grew up in the all-black town of Eatonville, Florida, a peaceful, front-porch storytelling place that engendered her love for and pride in southern black culture, the impetus for her work. Imaginative, self-possessed, and outgoing, she had the wherewithal to survive her mother's death when she was 13, and to live by her wits after her father rejected her. Finally back in school after a period of harrowing vagabondage, thanks to friends and benefactors (her charisma was as powerful as her genius), Hurston cut quite a swath at Howard University, Barnard, and Columbia, embarking on unprecedented (and tricky) fieldwork in black folklore and spiritual practices throughout the rural South and, after winning a Guggenheim fellowship, in the Caribbean. A key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston, dashing and creative, struggled against poverty, sexism, and racism with grace and wisdom. As Boyd adeptly and passionately analyzes Hurston's revolutionary books, intense spirituality, and myriad adventures, Hurston emerges in all her splendor--not only smarter, tougher, and more dazzlingly alive than most people but also free, gloriously and resoundingly free. I Cried When It Ended
By A Customer
Valerie Boyd has written an incredible biography of an amazing life. Before reading Wrapped in Rainbows, I considered myself pretty knowledgeable about Zora Neale Hurston. I had read Hurston's autobiography, Robert Hemenway's biography, several of Hurston's books, and various articles about her work. However, Boyd's book gave me a deeper understanding of Hurston than I would have thought possible. Boyd's meticulous research and insightful analysis bring the places and times of Hurston's life into detailed focus. This gives a rich backdrop to the events of Hurston's life and helps clarify her actions. This is the job of any good biographer.
What makes Boyd a great biographer is her ability to get inside Hurston's skin so that the reader experiences the complexities of her great life. Many people view Hurston's life as tragic. She was a wonderful writer and champion of the "folk," yet she died in poverty--with all of her books out of print--and was buried in an unmarked grave. Boyd skillfully takes us on the journey of Hurston's life--through her successes and failures, her accolades and obscurity, her dreams and realities. I felt the passion and conviction and courage Hurston must have called on to accomplish what she did despite the challenges she faced. When I finished the book, I cried--not because Hurston's life was tragic, but because of the wonder of the Wrapped in Rainbows experience. Boyd's poetic writing was a joy to read. The beauty of her writing was breathtaking at times. Perhaps more significantly, through it, I identified with Hurston more than I ever had before and felt the supreme contentment of a life well lived.

An informative, entertaining read
By Carmen Hudson
What a monumental task -- telling the story of such a remarkable, complex literary figure. Valerie Boyd does an outstanding job of revealing Hurston's motivations, inspiration and personal character. I've always loved Hurston as a writer. Reading this biography fortified my respect for her talent and sheer will to create. This book provides a spiritual lift -- ZNH is solid evidence that creativity cannot be suppressed. Additionally, the book is a virtual tour of the Harlem Renaissance and some its most illustrious players, and a thoughtful chronicle of the black experience in the early 20th century. A must-read for students of African American history and culture.
