Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945, by Evan Thomas

Sea of Thunder is a taut, fast-paced, suspenseful narrative of the Pacific War that culminates in the battle of Leyte Gulf, the greatest naval battle ever fought.

Told from both the American and Japanese sides, through the eyes of commanders and sailors of both navies, Thomas's history adds an important new dimension to our understanding of World War II.

Drawing on oral histories, diaries, correspondence, postwar testimony from both American and Japanese participants, and interviews with survivors, Thomas provides an account not only of the great sea battle and Pacific naval war, but of the contrasting cultures pitted against each other.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Thomas, Newsweek's assistant managing editor, turns his considerable narrative and research talents to Leyte Gulf, history's largest and most complex naval battle. He addresses the subject from the perspectives of four officers: William Halsey, who commanded the U.S. 3rd Fleet; Adm. Takeo Kurita, his Japanese counterpart; Adm. Matome Ugaki, Kurita's senior subordinate and a "true believer" in Japan's destiny; and Cdr. Ernest Evans, captain of a lowly destroyer, the U.S.S. Johnston. The Americans believed the Japanese incapable of great military feats, while the Japanese believed the Americans were incapable of paying the price of war. Both were tragically wrong. Halsey steamed north in pursuit of a what turned out to be a decoy, while Kurita's main force was positioned to destroy the American landing force in the Philippines. Evans repeatedly took the Johnston into harm's way against what seemed overwhelming odds. His heroism, matched by a dozen other captains and crews, convinced Kurita to break off the action. With Halsey's battleships and carriers just over the horizon, Kurita refused to sacrifice his men at the end of a war already lost. Ugaki bitterly denounced the lack of "fighting spirit and promptitude" that kept him from an honorable death. Evans fought and died like a true samurai. As Thomas skillfully reminds us, war is above all the province of irony. (Nov.)

From Booklist
The biographer of John Paul Jones adds another valuable book to naval historiography with this study of the Pacific Campaign of World War II, the greatest naval campaign in history. He relates its events through the actions of four naval officers, Americans Admiral William Halsey and Commander Ernest Evans and Japanese admirals Takeo Kurita and Matome Ugaki. As their stories unfold, Thomas discloses the development and corporate cultures of two navies openly preparing to fight and finally getting down to it in 1941. The climax comes at Leyte Gulf, where Halsey's overaggressive tactics exposed the invasion fleet off Leyte to Kurita's surface force, which Evans' destroyer Johnston helped repel (see James D. Hornfischer's Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, 2004), and where Ugaki's Kamikaze Corps debuted. Thomas has a notable knack for researching and writing tales of the sea that are entirely accessible to comparative landlubbers yet also enthralling for readers weaned on Samuel Eliot Morison and C. S. Forester. Heads up, WWII maritime collections, in particular. Roland Green

"One of the most insightful analyses yet written of personalities and military cultures at war...An exciting read...Thomas draws the battle scenes with exquisite precision...Those who would direct military strategy and policy should be well warned -- and should have Thomas's book, well-worn, at their bedsides." -- Wesley K. Clark, The Washington Post Book World

great tale and it's true! very inspired by a hero
(a word that is overused by media) like captain evans
who did his duty in its fullest sense. i know that if
i am a destroyer captain i would just launch the tropedoes
and retreat when facing against battleships.

Now that these events are 50 years in the past, much more material is available and the readers benefit. The author is at his best making sense of action spread across the Pacific and the personalities that shaped the battle. Well done.

Occasions (New Series of Lifestyle Books), by Kate Spade

Every occasion calls out for something extra, whether it's flowers you set on the table, foods to honor a special gathering, or the selection of music. For both hostess and guest, consideration of those around you is among the most important qualities for any enjoyable occasion. A smile and sense of humor are also essential, and before the canapés and night lighting a good hostess is ultimately defined by a welcoming and gracious demeanor.
In Occasions, designer Kate Spade invites you into her world of easy, festive entertaining, where the emphasis is not on "the perfect meal" but on having "the perfect time." It's a world where laughter and conversation at dinner parties are encouraged and where spilled red wine on the couch is no reason to stop the music. As Kate says, "Making your guests feel at home is truly an art and it's one worth cultivating."
Any occasion begins with preparation, and at the outset Kate describes such basic components as lighting (votive candles are a must); table linens, flatware, and glassware; flowers (trimmed short and tightly massed); even bedding for overnight or weekend guests. Party shopping lists, hors d'oeuvres and cocktail favorites, and dinner party menus are all included. An "Alphabet of Special Events," from baby showers to tailgate picnics, is both anecdotal and useful for would-be hostesses everywhere.
Whether you entertain a lot or a little, and whether your style is casual or formal, Occasions, with more than 230 charming watercolor illustrations, is a handy and fresh approach to the subject, a book to be treasured today and over the years. Above all, at any gathering "hospitality makes for infectious fun."

Amazon.com Review
Back in 1993, the editor-turned-designer Kate Spade made a splash in the fashion world by turning out a small collection of boxy, utilitarian handbags, each elegantly accented with her name stitched in discreet, lowercase letters. As a result, the simplicity and unabashed refinement of the Spade moniker on those Lilliputian labels has come to define the very foundation on which the designer has since built a fashion empire, one that now, in addition to handbags, includes shoes, clothing, and smart home things, all of which embody the Spade formula of timeless style--a seamless merging of cheerful colors, clean shapes, and well-chosen embellishments.

Not bad for a Kansas City-born girl who used to comb vintage stores for fun. Having perfected and expertly marketed her own brand of personal style (one that has famously been counterfeited throughout the world), the designer has emerged with an equally elegant trio of books whose topics Spade has become a virtual authority: Style, Occasions, and Manners.

Applying a personal touch to everything you do is Spade's mantra, and leads us off to parties big and small in Occasions. Just like its sister volumes Style and Manners, Occasions has the spirit of a light-hearted scrapbook, but it still packs a bounty of inspired entertaining ideas into its slim proportions. From classic cocktail recipes and setting a sparkling table to seasonal menus, party themes, and the art of the perfect toast, Spade offers all the ingredients for making a party memorable (and maintaining grace under pressure). While she often spotlights the wisdom and flair of famous party stars she loves (Truman Capote and his Black & White ball among them), Spade in her own words resonates as the real tastemaker, getting the balance between girl-next-door and bon vivant just right. --Christene Barberich

From Booklist
Moving from creating handbags to dispensing advice, Kate Spade, of the eponymous fashion house, plunges into publishing with a smart little book akin to Coco Chanel's oh-so-classic little black dress. Surprisingly, her volume yields a goodly amount of verve and veracity, wit and wisdom. It begins with a few questions and answers (called "Have you ever wondered?"), which function as teasers to what lies within. The book is divided into three sections; two are filled with direct advice and the third is a collection of miscellany . The advice is classic and always in the best of taste. Barbara Jacobs

Occasions Give Everyone the Opportunity to be the Hostess with the Utmost Style
By Lisa Plancich
The cover and design are bright red. It's a perfect color for all occasions with a white paint brush look depicting a woman sitting among boxes. The cover opens to this quote, "Occasions always gracious, sometimes irreverent". Well stated.

The book opens with little nagging questions a host, hostess or guest may wonder but seldom ask. Kate Spade tackles the questions and addresses the answer before you are saddled with dilemmas like a non-alcoholic drink at a cocktail party or what to put into a well-stocked bar.

The topics include three main chapters titled, Setting the scene, Party standards and Specific events. The book helps you along, in little pieces, to consider details like lighting, flowers and music. It then moves forward to setting the table and how/what to serve. Finally Spade closes in on the specific event and how to differentiate the occasion by making it extra special.

In setting the scene, Ms. Spade discusses décor such as linens, stocking the cupboard with basics like flatware, dinnerware, glassware etc. She also graciously supplies shopping lists for the newbie entertainer. Music and lights, such as votives vs. tapers, invitations and even being a good guest is addressed.

In the party standards chapter Ms. Spade discusses the mixed drink, wine and beer. She helps the host along by deciding on hors d'oevores and then assists with a shopping list and timeline. Aside from food hints and helps, she discusses the guest room and how to entertain beyond just a few hours in your home.

"Occasions" fills itself out in the closing chapter with special events. Brunch and birthdays and how to make them special are contrasted with picnic and even the "un-occasion". What Kate Spade seems to want her reader to know is that any occasion is doable. Certainly there is the possibility of challenges but the payoff is so much greater. Life is more interesting when you look past what might go wrong and go for it.

A lot is covered in this little book. Detail is sparse yet to the point. Ms. Spade omits fluff and details. Entire books could be devoted to many of these topics. Kate Spades pared down style, much like her accessory designs, makes her reader aware of considering these details. If you need more information you are now armed with your topic and the internet will allow you, the reader, to zero in on specifics.

This would be a great book for a bride to be or a new homeowner. Kate Spade encourages someone to open their home and embrace the ease that comes with having people over. She implies that anyone can be a great hostess and put on a great party. It isn't difficult. It just takes a smile and consideration for the guests. Unlike many "experts" who leave their viewers/readers questioning if they can do it, Kate Spate let's us know that with just a little planning we can pull it off.

Great book!

A great book for a hostess gift, shower gift, etc. I received a copy for my birthday and then decided to get it for a friend for a wedding shower present. Very classic ideas and a must for a Kate Spade lover!

Re-hashed Work
By A Customer
I agree with the other reviewer. I bought all of the books in this series and am shocked at how much of the advice has been taken from previous authors on these topics. She is copying classics like Emily Post and simply re-wording the text. Except for the cute drawings, this series is a waste of money. If you want to know how to do things "correctly", read Letitia Baldridge's "The New Manners For the '90's". It covers everything and is written by a woman with the education and experience to know of which she speaks! Not someone who using her fashion connections to flood the magazines and talk shows with her "discovery" of this information.

Tearing Down the Walls: How Sandy Weill Fought His Way to the Top of the Financial World. . .and Then Nearly Lost It All (Wall Street Journ

He is one of the world's most accomplished figures of modern finance. As chairman and chief executive officer of Citigroup, Sanford "Sandy" Weill has become an American legend, a banking visionary whose innovativeness, opportunism, and even fear drove him from the lowliest jobs on Wall Street to its most commanding heights. In this unprecedented biography, acclaimed Wall Street Journal reporter Monica Langley provides a compelling account of Weill's rise to power. What emerges is a portrait of a man who is as vital and as volatile as the market itself.
Tearing Down the Walls tells the riveting inside story of how a Jewish boy from Brooklyn's back alleys overcame incredible odds and deep-seated prejudices to transform the financial-services industry as we know it today.
Using nearly five hundred firsthand interviews with key players in Weill's life and career -- including Weill himself -- Langley brilliantly chronicles not only his success and scandals but also the shadows of his hidden self: his father's abandonment and his loving marriage; his tyrannical rages as well as his tearful regrets; his fierce sense of loyalty and his ruthless elimination of potential rivals. By highlighting in new and startling detail one man's life in a narrative as richly textured and compelling as a novel, Tearing Down the Walls provides the historical context of the dramatic changes not only in business but also in American society in the last half century.

From Publishers Weekly
A symbol of crony capitalism thanks to his friendly phone call to the 92nd Street Y pre-school on behalf of analyst Jack Grubman, Sanford Weill helped lay the groundwork for today's vertically integrated (and scandal-ridden) financial industry. Starting with a small brokerage, Weill built several business empires that culminated in the $83 billion 1998 merger that put him atop the global financial services leviathan Citigroup, an unprecedented agglomeration of investment and retail banks, insurance companies, consumer loan corporations and stock brokerages. More than a mere deal-maker, he also brought "lean and mean" management to Wall Street by laying off workers, slashing benefits, raiding pension funds and substituting stock options for salaries. Wall Street Journal reporter Langley's colorful biography tells this story well. She paints a vivid portrait of Weill, whose messy appetites, towering tantrums and voracious desire for corporate jets and other status symbols make him seem occasionally pre-schoolish himself, and provides a blow-by-blow account of Wall Street's sometimes explosive restructuring grounded in pettiness, nepotism and backstabbing. It's hard, though, to see the drama in executive turf battles when even the losers walk away with $30 million golden parachutes, and larger issues can get lost in the soap opera of office politics. The economic ramifications of the financial industry's reorganization are hardly touched on, and the effects of Weill's draconian cost-cutting on the rank-and-file who bore the brunt of it are treated as an untroubling prerequisite to rising productivity and share-holder value. Langley's book is informative and highly readable, but there's a much bigger story to be told.

Review
Forbes A riveting narrative.

The Economist A rollicking biography.

BusinessWeek A well-written, fast-paced read that does the best job yet of explaining who Weill is.

Time [A] richly reported recent history of Wall Street and corporate America told through an oversize personality.

From the Inside Flap
"No single figure looms larger in Wall Street history over the last thirty years than Sandy Weill, and until now no single book has captured his boundless energy, street-savvy intellect and towering ambition. More than a riveting narrative of one man's relentless climb to the top of the financial world, Tearing Down the Walls is also a fascinating chronicle of how Wall Street changed in the 90s. Any business person interested in the current world of finance will want to devour the book now, and I suspect it will be mandatory reading on trading floors and in business school for years to come."
-- Bryan Burrough, co- author of Barbarians at the Gate

"At last, the defining business book of the decade is here. Sandy Weill emerges as not just the most compelling character on Wall Street today, but a King Lear-like figure of towering ego, voracious appetite and ruthless ambition who embodies the transformative power of American capitalism. The behind-the-scenes reporting is unparalleled, placing the reader in top-secret board meetings, lunches at the Four Seasons, and on board the corporate jets where real financial power is wielded. As fresh as today's scandal-filled headlines, Tearing Down the Walls is also a meticulously detailed history and a powerful narrative that grips the reader right up to the revelations of its final pages."
--James B. Stewart, author of Den of Thieves

"Monica Langley has written what will surely be a contender for the best business book of 2003. Tearing Down the Walls is like a Chinese menu in which the reader is offered everything from column A and B -- a vivid biography of Wall Street titan Sandy Weill, an illuminating history of Wall Street, an inside-the-executive-suite look at how decisions are made, an explanation of why corporate America is sometimes ethically obtuse, a book that is anchored in fact yet reads like a novel. And, unlike a Chinese meal, readers will feel full hours later."
--Ken Auletta, author of Greed and Glory on Wall Street

Honest, Provacative and Very Well Written
By Shushu
I read this book to get some insight into Sandy's right hand man Jammie Diamond who was about to become the CEO of Chase, the company I worked for. I must say that it was so interesting that I could not put the book down. It's a biography that reads like a novel. The world of finance and Sandy's role in it's history is spell binding. Monica Langley did an excellent job writing this book and look forward to reading anything else she's done.
If this subject is of any interest to you then you will be glad you took the time to read this book.

Best Business Biography I have read!
By Rick Spell
I like business biographies and specifically those concerning investment banking. Sandy Weill's career is so diverse with so many companies turned around that this book is the best I have read in detailing a man's lifetime case study. For those who may not be familiar with Sandy Weill, he started on Wall Street with a small firm as Wall Street was struggling with sheer back-office paperwork and quickly grew that into a force challenging Merrill Lynch. After a merger with American Express, Weill was eventually forced out. He returned to corporate management buying a Baltimore finance company in trouble, Commercial Credit. After merging with Travelers Insurance, Weill eventually merges with Citicorp creating the largest financial institution in the world.
What makes this book interesting are the character flaws of Sandy Weill. While he has strengths in cost cutting efficiency, he has many management flaws. Temper management, delegation of authority, public speaking are but a few of the flaws detailed in this book. Of particular interest is his relationship with Jamie Dimon, his long-time younger protégé, who is eventually let go and now runs Bank One.
There is one complaint I have with this book. At the takeover of Commercial Credit, there are significant discussions of the changes in management philosophy that are quite interesting. But after significant work and allusion of improvement, no report of financial performance was provided to demonstrate mathematically how positive the improvement was. Obviously, it was significant given the mergers that took place after the turnaround of Commercial Credit.
I must compliment the author on a thorough research job. It was clear from the dialog that this book would have been impossible without interviews with many different people including Sandy Weill. I did not find this book tipped to Weill's favor as a "fluff" piece but rather I thought the author balanced the good with the bad.
In summary, if you like business summaries dealing with finance you will like this book.

By A Customer
This book is great!!!!! I haven't finished it yet but I am glued to the pages..taking about the ascent of a brooklyn kid. Sandy is human and has every flaw but it talks about business and no bull..... it's not one of those sugared biographies. It talks about the strong personalities in wallstreet and also building great businesses. I thoroughly recommend it as required reading.

The Boat of Dreams: A Christmas Story, by Richard Preston

In 1969, William Foster, Sr., a thirty-three-year-old army reserve soldier, is lost in action in Vietnam. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Sarah Ann; a six-year-old daughter, Lila; and a thirteen-year-old son, Will, Jr. They live in a trailer on the coast of Maine, and parked beside the trailer is their father's beautiful but unreliable lobster boat, the Sarah Ann. The Sarah Ann's graceful curves and beautiful wood are a painful daily reminder of Will Sr.'s plans and dreams -- dreams now lost with him. The December afternoons are lonely and dark for Lila and Will, who must come home alone from school while their mother works. They get scared when they find evidence that someone has been visiting the trailer, and when they come home to find a rugged, cantankerous, somewhat smelly old man watching TV, it takes them a while to realize he's...Santa Claus. What Santa does with the lobster boat and how he handles Will's one and only Christmas dream -- to have his dad back -- is the story of The Boat of Dreams. It brings laughter, surprises, and tears and tells through an unforgettable story how love is the one power that can overcome all.

From Publishers Weekly
The gloomy days of a Maine winter seem colder and darker for Will Jr., Lila and their mother, Sarah Ann, as Christmas 1969 approaches-the first without their dad, a lobsterman, who was sent to Vietnam the year before and lost in action. Practically penniless, Sarah Ann refuses to sell the lobster boat her husband named for her-the family's one valuable possession-and instead scrapes by working at a local supermarket. Alone in their trailer after school each evening, the children are visited by Santa's surly specter: a beer-guzzling, B.O.-ridden ghost who camps out in their recliner to watch afternoon soap operas and showers in vain to remove his otherworldly stench. Sleighless and no longer capable of bringing physical gifts to the world's children after an unfortunate collision with the Hoover Dam, Santa's spirit enlists Will and Lila to help spread Christmas dreams with their dad's old boat and confront their own loss. Free of the usual holiday sugar overdose, Preston's inventive, droll story was originally written for a friend who was dying of breast cancer; a portion of the book's proceeds will go toward cancer research.

Preston Solves My Christmas Shopping Problem
By Brian Abel Ragen
I won't have to do a lot of shopping this Christmas. I'm giving everyone _The Boat of Dreams_. When I first read it, I laughed and felt genuinely moved. Most Christmas stories, especially ones involving Santa, feel cheap to me. The happy emotions aren't earned; they are just ladled out. This book is the exception. Its setting feels real, so its turn to fantasy seems real, too.
_The Boat of Dreams_ is a book that I can read to my niece and discuss with my fellow English professors. I think it is going to be a classic. All my friends and every relation to the third degree will find a copy in their stockings. This year I'm sure my cousins are going to enjoy what I give them for Christmas.

Not Just for Christmas
By M. R. Peterson
In his other works Richard Preston has taught us about the promise and the threat of biology. In The Boat of Dreams he teaches us the promise of hope, love, and the human spirit. I believe this is Richard's finest effort. It isn't a book, it is a gift to everyone who has ever lost a friend or relative, anyone who has ever lost hope -- in other words, a gift to all of us.

Bush at War, by Bob Woodward

Bush at War reveals in stunning detail how an untested president with a sweeping vision for remaking the world and war cabinet members often at odds with each other responded to the September 11 terrorist attacks and prepared to confront Iraq. Woodward's virtual wiretap into the White House Situation Room is the first history of the war on terrorism.

Amazon.com Review
Bush at War focuses on the three months following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, during which the U.S. prepared for war in Afghanistan, took steps toward a preemptive strike against Iraq, intensified homeland defense, and began a well-funded CIA covert war against terrorism around the world. The narrative is classic Woodward: using his inside access to the major players, he offers a nearly day-by-day account of the decision-making processes and power battles behind the headlines. Woodward's information is based on tape-recorded interviews of over a hundred sources (some unnamed), including four hours of exclusive interviews with the president, along with notes from cabinet meetings and access to some classified reports.

Woodward's analysis of President Bush's leadership style is especially fascinating. A self-described "gut player" who relies heavily on instinct, Bush comes across as a man of action continually pressing his cabinet for concrete results. The revelation that the president developed and publicly stated the so-called Bush Doctrine--the policy that the U.S. would not only go after terrorists everywhere but also those governments or groups which harbor them--without first consulting Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, or Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is particularly telling. Other principals are examined with equal scrutiny. Though National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice emerges as soft-spoken and even tentative during group meetings, it becomes clear that Bush is dependent on her for candid advice as well as for conveying his thoughts to his cabinet. The relationship between Powell and Rumsfeld (and to a lesser degree Powell and Cheney) is often strained, exposing their differences regarding how to deal with Iraq and whether coalition building or unilateralism is most appropriate. Woodward also describes how CIA director George Tenet prepared a paramilitary team to infiltrate Afghanistan to set the groundwork for invasion, and how this ushered in a new era of cooperation between the defense department and the CIA. A worthwhile and often enlightening read, this is a revealing and informative first draft of the Bush legacy. --Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly
Quoting liberally from transcripts of National Security Council meetings and hundreds of interviews with those in the presidential inner circle, including four hours of interviews with Bush himself, the Washington Post assistant managing editor, best-selling author and Watergate muckraker manages to provide a nonpartisan account of the first 100 days of the post September 11 war on terror. While Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, President Bush and CIA Director George Tenet are impressive, Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz come off as hawkish and reactionary, repeatedly calling for a strike against Iraq in the first days of the conflict while pushing for a more widespread, global war. Woodward does an excellent job of exposing the seat-of-their-pants planning sessions conducted at the highest levels of power and the hectic diplomacy practiced by Powell and Bush in trying to get the air war against Afghanistan off the ground. He also brings to light the divisions among the planners concerning the bombing in Afghanistan, which made little impact until late in the game, when the Taliban lines were finally hit. In addition to recounting the heated arguments about when and how to retaliate against Al Qaeda, Woodward also follows Special Ops agents flown into Afghanistan with millions in payoff money weeks in advance of any other American presence. Living in harsh conditions with little to no support, these "110 CIA officers and 316 Special Forces personnel," in this account, ran the show, and effectively won the war with their intelligence gathering operations. While at times relying a bit too heavily on transcribed conversations, Woodward nonetheless offers one of the first truly insightful and informative accounts of the decision making process in the war on terror. 16 pages of b&w photos.

Alice in Wonderland, Revisionist, Shallow, with Gems
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
There is an Alice in Wonderland quality to this book--or more properly stated, to the conversations that are quoted among the principals. Their wandering short-hand conversations, the degree to which the President is mis-led about our capabilities, the inability of the Secretary of Defense to answer a direct question, always having to go back to his office for an answer--the entire book is, as one reviewer suggests, practically a recount of a handful of recollections about scattered conversations, as if the center of the world were one room in the White House, and nothing outside those walls really mattered. It is also somewhat revisionist--as I recall from published news at the time, all of the principals wanted to delay the taking of Kabul until the spring, and it was President Putin of Russia, speaking directly to President Bush, who made the case, based on his superior intelligence sources on the ground, for how quickly Kabul would fall, leading to the US acceptance of rapid advances by the Afghan warlords. The absence of this essential and openly known fact casts doubt on the entire process of writing the book, and how information was researched and selected for inclusion.
There are, however, some major gems that make a careful reading of this book very worthwhile and I list them for consideration by other readers:
1) The Directorate of Intelligence does not appear as a listed player--CIA special operations rather than CIA analysis appears to have been the DCI's best card to play;
2) The clandestine service, as Dewey Claridge notes in concluding his "Spy for All Seasons," died in the 1990's, with only 12 case officers in one year's class--the book misrepresents the increase from 12 to 120 as stellar--it was actually a return to the norm before a series of mediocre leaders destroyed the Directorate of Operations;
3) The CIA had been "after" bin Laden for five years prior to 9-11, the DCI even "declaring war" on him, to zero effect. Worse, post 9-11 investigations determined that bin Laden had been planning the 9-11 attack for two years without any substantive hint being collected by U.S. intelligence--and at the end of the book, Rumsfeld reflects on how the three major surprises against the U.S. prior to 9-11 not only happened without U.S. intelligence detecting them, but we did not learn of them for five to thirteen years *after the fact* (page 320);
4) Presidential-level communications stink--the Secretary of State could not talk to the President when flying back for seven hours from Latin America, and the National Security Advisor could not get a reliable secure connection to the President from her car right in Washington, D.C.
5) The Secret Service idea of security for Presidential relatives in a time of crisis is to take them to the nearest Federal Center--the kind that got blown up in Oklahoma.
6) Throughout the discussions, it was clear to the principals that the U.S. military is designed to find and destroy fixed physical targets with obvious signatures; it cannot do--it is incompetent at--finding mobile targets, whether vehicles or individuals (cf. page 174)...and of course as General Clark documented in his book, and David Halberstam repeats in his most recent tome, and as the principals learned again vis a vis Afghanistan, the U.S. Army does not do mountains.
There are three remarkable aspects of this story, only one even remotely hinted at in the book: we failed to get bin Laden. The CIA went to Afghanistan with the right orders: "bin Laden dead or alive." They promptly forgot their orders and settled for spending $70M to play soldier. The two stories that are not told in this book, but are clearly apparent: 1) Russia saved the day, both for the CIA and for the Department of Defense; and 2) Saudi Arabia never came up as a serious problem that needed to be dealt with sooner than later.
Finally, and this only became clear to me after the early months of 2003 when the obsession of a few people in the Administration brought the world to a crisis over Iraq, the book provides really excellent documentation of how a tiny minority, led by Paul Wolfowitz, basically pushed the President to treat Iraq as an alternative to substantive action on global terrorists networks, and the book documents how the uniformed leadership of the Pentagon clearly opposed this line of thinking that is unsupported by intelligence, either on Iraq, or on the relative threat of Iraq (not imminent) in relation to many other threats that are both more imminent and more costly if not addressed now.
This is a useful book, worthy of reading, but the real story with all the details will not be known for some time.

Journalism as Gossip
By Richard A. Ellis
Woodward's intent was to provide a snapshot of the post-9/11 year of the Bush administration by talking to as many insiders as he could and recording their on-the-spot actions and observations. This "fly-on-the-wall" approach has its merits and drawbacks, especially as practiced in this book. On the plus side, he seems to have had quite extensive access to the major players, although apparently much of the verbatim quotes from high level meetings must have been reconstructed afterward by the parties. He does provide some sense of the personalities of these figures, and how they interact with each other. I had hoped the book might provide some clue as to the rationale behind the policy, and while there is some analysis, it is mainly "personality-based."
The limitations of this approach are readily evident: Woodward is careful not to step on anyone's toes, and one cannot help but wonder whther this is because everyone was acting as competently as he portrays them, or whether his reporting is designed to facilitate future access to this administration, widely viewed by the press as paranoid about negative images. If journalism is the first draft of history, then I suspect this book will not be deemed very useful a few years out. There is no analysis or critique of the administration, and everything they tell Woodward is taken at face value. Minute and unimportant troop deployments are covered in as much detail as much larger issues. The book seems like an effort to picture Bush as "in charge" and acting competently, without any reflection on the wisdom of the direction they are taking the country. As the book ends in late summer 1992, there is virtually nothing on how Iraq became Enemy No. 1, or the policy reasons behind that switch. And Woodward has an annoying fondness for the one-sentence paragraph.
All in all, of the eight or nine books I have read touching on 9/11 issues, this was the least satisfying, but it was certainly not totally devoid of value. As a useful counterpart on how a seemingly competent, in-charge administration, fueled on hubris and a willingness to assert American power, can get us into a load of trouble, Halberstram's "The Best and the Brightest" is worth a read. The trouble now is that this crew is neither the best nor the brightest.

Bush made strangely vulnerable
By Ian Gazarek
For all the conservatives who give this book one star because it's "filled with lies," I feel compelled to point out that I am a moderate liberal who enjoys reading these Woodward books because they help me empathize with the Bush administration more, not because I want to demonize them or make fun of them.

This book, like his most recent one, is one that will have you forgetting your other responsibilities. As busy as I am, I found myself finishing this near-400-page book at just under five days. It's just really interesting, really good reading; and it covers material that, like I said about the other book, every American really should know about.

Chapter 1

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

The horse has a completely herbivorous (vegetable) diet and its digestive system has evolved to deal with this type of food material. For example, the large intestine contains a population of microbes which break down the vegetable cellulose. This chapter presents a brief outline of the functional anatomy of the digestive system and describes some of the more common problems affecting it.

Functional anatomy

Mouth The mouth is specialized to enable a horse to grasp grasses and other vegetation and to grind them into a digestible pulp. The adult horse has forty or forty-two teeth (compared with twenty-four temporary teeth in the foal). These are classified into incisors (twelve), which grasp and shear the grass just above its roots, and premolars and molars (twenty-four), which are the specialized grinding teeth. The canine (tushes) and wolf (first premolar) teeth appear to have no function in the modern horse and are vestiges of a more primitive ancestor.

The muscular tongue acts with the hard and soft palates to propel food material from the incisor teeth to the grinding teeth and then to the back of the mouth (oropharynx), where food material accumulates prior to swallowing. The salivary glands discharge from tiny openings into the mouth and provide fluid containing special enzymes which aid in the degradation of food material.

Oropharynx (back of the mouth) The oropharynx is a muscular compartment which is continuous with the back of the mouth, and it is here that food material is stored prior to swallowing. The roof of the oropharynx is formed by the soft palate, a horizontal muscular sheet, which separates the oropharynx from the nasopharynx, which is only involved with breathing. When a bolus of food material is swallowed, it is propelled backwards by the base of the tongue and the pharyngeal muscles from the oropharynx into the oesophagus (gullet). At this moment the soft palate is elevated to block off the back of the nose, and the larynx moves forward and closes so that food material cannot leak into the upper or lower respiratory tracts.

Swallowing is a highly coordinated activity in which the individual components or movements last only for a fraction of a second. The pharynx can be considered as the crossroads between food material and air. Any disturbance in its function can produce serious difficulties in swallowing and/or breathing.

Oesophagus (gullet) and stomach The muscular tube of the gullet transfers food material by means of wavelike movements which squeeze food in the direction of the stomach.

Food material enters the stomach through a one-way muscular valve which prevents regurgitation of food material back up the oesophagus except under the most extreme conditions (for example, when the stomach is massively distended). Consequently a horse cannot vomit. The stomach lining is partly glandular and partly non-glandular. The glandular portion provides enzymes and acids which help to digest the food material. From the stomach ingesta pass through a valve into the small intestine.

Small intestine The small intestine is a long muscular tube with a glandular lining. In the upper part enzymatic fluids secreted by the liver and pancreas, along with the enzymes produced by the intestinal glands, help to break down the ingesta into their basic constituents. These constituents -- fats, proteins and carbohydrates -- are absorbed and transported by the blood stream to be utilized by the body to produce energy and materials for growth. The small intestine lies in coils in the left side of the abdomen and is connected to the large intestine (caecum and colon) by another muscular valve (ileocaecal). Food material is transported by muscular wave movement.

Caecum and large colon (large intestine) Ingesta are passed through the ileocaecal valve into the caecum and large colon, where the resident microbial population breaks down cellulose into its basic constituents. The muscular contractions of the caecum and large colon are rather complex, but these structures, the largest in the equine abdomen, are responsible for the absorption of a considerable amount of water from the ingesta.

The muscular coat of the caecum and large colon is complicated, having bands and sacculations, but ingesta are still moved by waves as in the simpler oesophagus and small intestine. The large colon is folded on itself and narrows at one of the bends (the pelvic flexure), predisposing this site to blockage. The large colon is continuous with the transverse colon and the small colon.

Small colon, rectum and anus The small colon continues the process of electrolyte and water absorption, its muscular structure having bands and sacculations similar to the large colon and caecum. It transfers the ingesta to the rectum, a simple muscular tube through which faecal material (dung) passes to the external environment. The anus is a muscular valve which regulates defaecation.

Conditions of the Digestive System

THE TEETH

Overshot jaws (parrot mouth) are relatively common, whereas undershot jaws (sow mouth) are extremely rare. Horses affected with both types of incisor malocclusion cope well with grazing and mastication and rarely lose condition.

There is a variety of other congenital abnormalities of the mouth which involve malocclusion of the teeth. One of the more commonly encountered of these is absence of cheek teeth. This appears most frequently in ponies and usually involves the absence of one or two cheek teeth on each side of the lower jaw. This results in relative overgrowth of the teeth in the upper jaw, which develop very sharp points, which can cause oral discomfort and quidding of food.

In the normal horse the upper cheek teeth are located more widely apart than the lower cheek teeth, and this results in the development of sharp points on the outside of the upper teeth and on the inside of the lower teeth. These can be smoothed by regular rasping. Dental irregularities also develop because of the manner in which the horse masticates. Thus a sharp point or hook forms on the first upper cheek tooth and the last lower cheek tooth on each side. Although regular rasping of the teeth will remove these, the sixth tooth on the lower jaw is more difficult to rasp. Eventually, in older horses, a sharp point develops which may cause discomfort during eating.

The temporary or milk teeth (both incisors and cheek teeth) are usually shed without difficulty. However, occasionally a temporary cheek tooth may become wedged between the adjoining teeth, and this can result in difficulty with chewing, often producing a foul smell to the breath because of trapped food. Any horse which appears to salivate and drop food should be examined by a veterinarian who will remove the wedged tooth with a pair of forceps.

Dental disease in the horse is relatively uncommon and it is surprising how, when a genuine dental problem occurs, many horses appear to carry on eating without difficulty. The sign which usually attracts the owner's attention is either a swelling or a discharging wound on the lower jaw or a swelling on the side of the face. Sometimes there may be a foul-smelling discharge from one nostril, as described in sinusitis. If any of these signs develop, a vet should be called and it may be necessary to carry out a radiographic or endoscopic examination to identify the problem.

Removing permanent cheek teeth of a horse is a difficult job, requiring considerable force, and must be carried out under general anaesthesia. The one exception to this is the removal of wolf teeth, which may be indicated if there is a problem with mouthing the bit. These vestigial teeth are small, with short roots, and usually can be removed relatively easily without a general anaes

This book is a must for anyone with more than one horse

Dr. Hayes' definitive work is the bible of most professional stables. It's written in an explanatory format, which can be understood by both lay persons and more professional horsemen. Although some of the sections with specific information for British horse operations may not apply to U.S. stables, 90% of the book is about diseases, injuries, sickness, and other horse health concerns. Immunizations and medications are also covered extensively as is breeding and foaling. Rather than just recite what can go wrong and what it looks like, Dr. Hayes makes the explanation a little deeper so horsemen can understand more of the mechanisms of the problem and therefore take more educated steps to prevent it. Don't leave the stable without Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners!

I bought this book last year, and have nearly worn it out!! I am studying towards vet school, and this book is invaluable to me when I work as a vet assistant in an equine hospital. I would reccomend it to people with more than an average interest in equine medicine, and with basic knowlledge of horse anatomy and veterinary terminology.

From Publishers Weekly
No longer satisfied with gentlemanly intelligence gathering, with the advent of WWII the United States changed its espionage policy and opted for more daring tactics like decoding secret messages and detonating exploding cigars. Under the guidance of decorated WWI hero William "Wild Bill" Donovan, the Office of Special Services, the CIA’s predecessor, assembled a motley assortment of agents who set the stage for the Allied armies’ most important missions, like the invasion of North Africa and the storming of Normandy. Through first person narratives from a slew of OSS operatives, O’Donnell explores the thrilling world of spying before satellites and computer hacking boxed agents into cubicles. The WWII OSS hauled hardened criminals out of jail to burgle enemy embassies and culled spies from the Free French who fled to England and North Africa. The sophisticated seductress "Cynthia" used her sex appeal to gather ciphers for breaking Polish, Italian and Vichy codes from high-ranking military men. Elsewhere, Virginia Hall supplied the French Resistance with arms and continually sabotaged the Gestapo while limping with a wooden-leg. The book also chronicles psychological operations by the Allied "Sauerkraut agents" who demoralized German troops by spreading rumors of defeat, disease and desperation. The chapter on the OSS’ covert weapons, like exploding baseballs and umbrella pistols, vividly recalls 007’s pre-mission encounters with "Q." This book is far more than a simple historical survey and reads like a satisfying cloak and dagger yarn, making it a good choice both history and mystery buffs.

From Booklist
O'Donnell, author of two books on U.S. elite units in World War II's European and Pacific theaters, turns to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and as in his previous books, writes from the perspective of the men--and in the OSS, some women--on the front lines. For the OSS, those lines were largely in German-occupied Europe, where operatives gathered intelligence and provided weapons, communications, and leadership to a wide variety of resistance organizations. The danger from the ruthless and frequently effective German forces was great, particularly for the local personnel. So, too, was the risk of being caught in factional quarrels in France and Italy and outright fratricidal slaughter in the Balkans. O'Donnell doesn't denigrate the OSS as do some other historians, who prefer other agencies and services that had turf fights with it throughout the war. Instead, he argues persuasively that the OSS made both material and psychological impacts on European resistance and, through it, on the Germans. Roland Green

Informative & interesting read
By xandert
Proved to be an outstanding and informative source of information on the OSS. None of it was written in the boring, dry fashion I've seen with so many books on history. I especially love the fact there are first person accounts included throughout. I love history books that contain accounts direct from people who lived it.

Review by Dennis Showalter for the History Book Club (OSS is a Main Selection)
Operatives, Spies, and Saboteurs is as gripping as a techno-thriller, with the bonus that its stories are true. O'Donnell's history of the Office of Strategic Service begins with President Franklin Roosevelt's decision that a country on the edge of entering a world war for survival needed an undercover foreign intelligence service. On July 11, 1941, he ordered the establishment of a Coordinator of Information, whose mission was to collect and analyze all information relevant to national security. Its head was Colonel William "Wild Bill" Donovan.
Front-line infantryman in World War I, Wall Street lawyer and business executive, former Assistant Attorney General, Donovan became one of the century's masters of clandestine war. He argued convincingly that the U.S.needed an organization that would take the fight to the Axis through propaganda, espionage, sabotage and guerrilla operations. In June 1942 the COI's name was changed to Office of Strategic Service; it was placed directly under the Joint Chiefs of Staff-and Donovan set about building a legend.
The "Oh So Secret" recruited from Ivy League schools, law firms, corporations, and-occasionally-prisons. Veterans of the Spanish Civil War, stigmatized elsewhere as "premature anti-fascists," were assigned to work with Communist resistance networks. Foreign nationals, even some prisoners of war, joined and went behind Axis lines with ropes around their necks, knowing they could expect only execution if captured.
O'Donnell conducted extensive interviews with over 300 former OSS members. He then cross-checked their narratives, as far as possible, against the extensive OSS records in the National Archives, many only recently declassified. First committed in North Africa, OSS teams and individuals operated in Sicily and Italy, in the Balkans alongside their British counterparts. But it was in France that the organization did its best work and had its greatest days. Well before the invasion, OSS agents were parachuted in to contact and organize resistance groups. Once the invasion began, OSS teams engaged in guerrilla operations, especially against the 2nd SS Panzer Division on its march to Normandy.
It was not all triumph. Individual operations were blown or defeated, usually at heavy cost in lives. A late-war OSS attempt to support partisans in Slovakia ended in disaster, with most of the agents falling into German hands. Nor was the OSS entirely about derring-do behind Axis lines. O'Donnell included a solid chapter describing the growing sophistication and effectiveness of OSS efforts in the field of propaganda. By the end of the war, OSS agents were conducting diplomatic negotiations as well, above all in Italy, where Allen Dulles, later chief of the Cold War CIA, played a key role in negotiating a theater-level German surrender.
O'Donnell concludes by suggesting the OSS may well have been too successful for its own good. Roosevelt's successor, Harry S. Truman, disbanded the organization in part because he feared an "American Gestapo." In little over a year Truman would authorize the Central Intelligence Agency, which for good and ill took over the OSS records, a good few of its agents, and its heritage.

"A revealing look into the intrigue and extraordinary courage of our intelligence gatherers of World War II . A rare combination of suspense thriller and true heroism by a great American writer."
-Clive Cussler
"Before there was a James Bond or a CIA, before there was a genre called the spy thriller, real-life spooks worked behind the scenes, often at tremendous risk, to win World War II. Deftly using oral history and recently declassified documents, Patrick O'Donnell gives us a fascinating look at the shaken-not-stirred life of these intrepid spies and soldiers, who are into intrigue before intrigue was cool."
-Hampton Sides, author of GHOST SOLDIERS
"This is a unique and uniquely valuable contribution, casting a penetrating light into the war in the shadows during World War II. O'Donnell breaks new ground with these first hand accounts by people who never expected to tell their story. Just as there was nothing new to say, along comes a book like this."
-Geoffrey Perret, Author of Eisenhower
