Few narrators could sound complimentary when calling Al Gore a "big honking nerd," but Vowell (Take the Cannoli), a self-proclaimed nerd, succeeds in doing just that while reading her collection of thoughtful, humorous essays on politics, patriotism and Tom Cruise (among other topics). Vowell's thin, reedy voice and halting delivery take some getting used to, but she settles into a comfortable groove by the end of the first tape, when she relates what she's learned from visiting places like Gettysburg and Witch City (otherwise known as Salem): no matter what your troubles are, "it could be worse." This is followed by an upbeat tune by They Might Be Giants, who composed the music for this audio. It's hard to resist a catchy, comical verse like, "You asked for baked potato/and they gave you fries/but that's not as sad now/is it/as the day the music died," but it's even more difficult to resist Vowell's obvious passion for history, for Al Gore and for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The full plate of special guests-including Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert and Michael Chabon-make token contributions: Colbert does an admirable impersonation of Gore and the oddly chosen O'Brien attempts to fill Abraham Lincoln's shoes. In the end, however, it is Vowell's self-deprecating wit and earnest delivery that will win over listeners.

Adult/High School-These essays and commentaries from Vowell's NPR radio appearances and other sources are curmudgeonly, critical, liberal, and, often, laugh-out-loud funny. The commentator, a self-described history nerd, wanders across the spectrum of American life from the theme-park feeling of Salem, MA, where she purchased a Witch's Crossing shot glass, to the glories of Carlsbad Caverns and the Underground Luncheonette. She belongs to a political listserv that was aghast at the results of the 2000 election, yet, joining several of the members on a road trip to protest the Inauguration, she ended up weeping as she sang the "Star-Spangled Banner." Her commitment to America and her dismay about the current direction of the government, both before and after September 11, are strongly stated, but her wit and slightly quirky outlook make reading her book a pleasure. Teens, regardless of their political leanings, will enjoy the pop-culture connections and even learn some history while smiling at her delivery. This title will work well for assignments on essay writing and even provide material for monologues.

Part social commentary and part standup comedy routine for the intellectually inclined, this collection of essays from Vowell, a contributing editor to NPR's This American Life, mines history and current events for insights into American life. Topics range from the quirky like an exploration of the value of pointless arcade games and Tom Cruise's "breakthrough" in Magnolia to a revealing example of how Al Gore's "Pinocchio problem" may have been manufactured during the 2000 election and the author's personal reflections on patriotism post- September 11. Interspersed are musings on presidential libraries, U.S./Canadian differences, and being a twin, as well as a history buff's view of why the field is significant. Most of these essays have appeared in print or been broadcast on NPR, but this compilation emphasizes a theme and provides an interesting contrast between pre- and post-attack life perspectives. The author's Gen-X frame of reference is clear, but the book should appeal to a wider audience of armchair historians and others who enjoy irreverent social commentary. The author wrote the similarly brash Take the Cannoli: Stories from the New World and Radio On: A Listener's Diary. Highly recommended for large public libraries. Funny, Intelligent And Damn Reassuring

I came to Sarah Vowell a virgin. Before I purchased her book I had never heard her on radio or read her anywhere but after thumbing through a portion of her explaining why she visits gruesome places in history, as someone who has himself thought seriously of staying overnight in the home Lizzie Borden killed her parents, I knew I had a deep kinship with this delightful person. The Partly Cloudy Patriot did not disappoint in any way. These short essays are very funny, often thoughtful, personal and impassioned. Whether describing Thanksgiving with her parents or her reaction to the presidential victory of Mr. Bush (a highlight of the volume is this essay and its skillful presentation of Gore as a nerd, in a very positive way). After this past election, this volume is a wonderful way to overcome a little and laugh a lot. A much needed writer in these terrible times.

I appreciate her dry wit

I was first introduced to Sarah Vowell when flipping through the channels on television. I stopped on a program on the Discovery Channel, where several authors were invited to speak at some sort of event. Sarah has this somewhat annoying, nasaly sound to her voice that is at once both annoying and completely endearing. After listening to her speak, I bought The Partly Cloudy Patriot on a whim, and was completely taken in.
Sarah Vowell is, at heart, a hip, nerdish, Gen-Xer like me. She has a special knack for story-telling. When I read this book, I was reminded of David Sedaris in some ways. I enjoyed it as much as Sedaris, but for different reasons. While Sedaris' anecdotes are "laugh out loud" funny, Sarah's stories are told with a dry, subtle wit. I look forward to reading more of her work.

You'll Be Glad You Bought A Vowell

Webster's Dictionary defines "droll" as "amusing in an odd or wry way." There are many adjectives for Sarah Vowell, but "droll" may be the best one-word description out there. In her second major collections of essays, the self-proclaimed nerd focuses on her strength � a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of American history and politics. Never has literary criticism (the genre this book is lumped into) been less stodgy as Vowell tries to come to terms with the end of the Clinton era, the 2000 presidential election fiasco, and the aftermath of 9/11. Also discussed are such wide-ranging topics as the Salem witch trials to arcade (pop-a-shot) basketball to a couple of famous Toms (movie star Cruise and former Dallas Cowboys� coach Landry). I happily admit to laughing out loud several times (and learning a thing or two) while reading this intelligent and entertaining volume.
For those unfamiliar with Vowell, I urge you to try and get a listen to her either in her regular gig on NPR or a book tour appearance/reading that is currently being aired on C-SPAN. Having Vowell's distinctive speaking voice in your head (she notes that she and Abraham Lincoln may share a similar oratory style -- "as squeaky as a six-year-old girl"), will only add to your reading enjoyment.
A slight warning � Vowell is a bleeding heart Democrat and she wears that heart proudly on her sleeve, so those with who do not have a similar political bent may have a tougher time stomaching some of the essays. Despite having a perpetual "partly cloudy" outlook of the world, there is also a palpable optimism that runs through Vowell's work. As she hilariously notes in one essay, her motto in any situation is "it could be worse." And, at times, that is not a bad way at all to get through some tough times.

Introduction

When I was growing up as a teenager in America I had insecurities. I had dreams that I didn't know how to chase. And I had experiences with family, friends, school, and boys that I didn't understand. I wanted to tell somebody what I was going through but I didn't think they would understand. So I began writing about these things in my diaries. Somehow writing them down helped me to deal with them, solve them, and even get past some of the confusion and hurt. In college I faced tougher, more complex problems. Again I turned to my diaries. Jotting down my experiences in my journals has allowed me to look at what I was going through and to be real with myself. And through that process I repaired my self-esteem; I learned to aim high. And I got stronger. I'm still learning, and my journal remains a constant listener, problem solver, and confidant.

After graduating from Hampton University, I founded a college-circulated hip-hop magazine called Mad Rhythms. I visited several campuses to talk to college students about entertainment careers. At the end of my lectures young women came up to me to share their problems. Many of them were suffering with the same insecurities I had experienced, struggling with being misunderstood, dealing with family crises, and having problematic relationships with their boyfriends. They always asked for my advice. After these one-on-one discussions I went back to my hotel room and thought about the kinds of challenges that each young lady was facing. When I returned home I began searching through my old diaries for some of the answers. I figured I had survived many of the same issues; maybe my diary could help them find some answers. That's when a light went off in my head. I needed to write a book for my girls -- girls who are facing dilemmas, need advice, and need to talk to somebody, just as I did.

I've separated the book into three phases: Foundation, Composition, and Fortification. Each phase contains various expressions that can assist you with analyzing, handling, and resolving challenges that come your way so that you can develop into a strong young woman. I've included my personal testimony on every page. Some of these diary entries were painful for me to share. With others, I was an outsider looking at how the people around me were behaving. All of these testimonies guided me in becoming the person I am today.

You may not relate to every entry, but there will be many that you can relate to. When you are going through an experience and need a source of strength, flip through the book again and see how I handled similar challenges. I've also included a testimony section with exercises that will help you get real with yourself regarding what is happening in your life. Learn from my mistakes. This book was written for you about your experiences, your trials, and your triumphs. This book is my journal from me to you. Use it as a solution getter, a problem solver, and a friend in need. My best hope is that reading about my experiences will help empower you to make the best possible decisions of your life.

Something to talk about

This is a really good book, it also gives the young ladies an opportunity to communicate their thoughts ideas and feelings in writing, focusing on courage, determination and self love, which is so important for the 13 to 17 year old age group. I brought this book after meeting Yasmin at a book signing at karabu book store. My daughter read the book, took it to school and shared it with her classmates, they loved the book as well, and so did her teachers, they all said they wanted the book and been working on the testimonies individually and then discussing them as a group. this provides the girls with expression and communication and letting them know they are not alone with issues and concerns they have, also it again emphasizes self love.

I have a teen group called Teens Trying To Make a Difference, I ordered it to work with my girls an they really love the book.

It has been a big help with my program. I have 37 girls in my group but i could only afford to buy 9 books. I buy everything for my girls out of my pocket. We are very pleased with them.

Diferente el ritmo y tensión de los anteriores, aunque igual mantiene la lógica de la historia, esta vez tiene menos ingredientes.Este libro es más descriptivo de los objetos de los personajes que de los sentimientos de los mismos.Quizás la primer crítica sea que no parece creíble y justificado que luego de un año de tortura entre el amor de Ayla y los prejuicios familiares que sufrió Jondalar(tema central casi del tercer libro),la recepción de Ayla entre los zelandonii sea tan natural y fácil por parte de los que realmente importan en la historia.Por otro lado, me quedé con las ganas de ver como Ayla mostraba las piedras de fuego en la ceremonia matrimonial(hecho que se anuncia y no sucede)no se si es una omisión adrede de la autora o es una falla de traducción. El relato de los sucesos que debieron de ser el climax como el casamiento o el nacimiento de Jondayla no tienen la profundidad sicológica con que la autora nos deleitó en los otros libros.Es quizás un buen prólogo para el sexto libro.Debemos esperar el postre.

DON'T Buy

I bought this along with several other programs due to its having a CD (even though it had only one practice test)and its being advertised to mimic the new NCLEX format. The book and the CD were not in the new format and didnt have questions (such as multiple multiples and diagrams) similar to the new NCLEX. Also, after taking the 2 hour practice test, the program would not let me see my results nor the analysis of any questions. Tech phone support said it happens sometimes and to try retaking the test (waste another 2 hrs of my valuble time?) Tech email support sent a return email several days after I had already taken the NCLEX.

So neither the book nor the CD is as Kaplan advertised and the CD doesnt work and tech support in awful. Therefore don't waste your money on this. Two very good study tools I recommend are from ERI and from Lippincot. I credit these two aids (along with alot of prayer) with passing NCLEX after answering only 75 questions.

Passed thanks to Kaplan

In July of 2004, I took my boards and did not pass. I was devestated. After picking myself up and dusting off, I found the Kaplan NCLEX-RN 2004-2005 book. As I read through these reviews I was shocked to see that some people thought the book was horrible. It is important to Know that before opening this book to review you must already have reviewed all areas of nursing content (Med surg, pediatrics, maternity, ...) This book was my bible and questions in the book are the closest to the NCLEX RN exam I have ever seen! I took my boards again in September 2004 and passed with 75 questions! I attribute this success to this amazing book. If you follow thier stratagies, you will pass!!

I suggest to study with this book, after completing Saunders Comprehensive Review book. For anyone who is displeased with Kaplan RN it is only because they needed a more in depth review of basic Nursing content before following Kaplan's stratagies to pass. This book should only be used in your final stretch of studying before the exam. Good luck!

Good Book for Strategy

I like this book. It doesn't contain a lot of questions, but it contains strategy and reasoning. The Kaplan book tells you how to break down a question and how to prioritize the answeres. The CD has many extra questions for practice, and the book itself has 1 practice test plus more questions throughout the instruction. SO.... if you are looking for a book with a lot of questions, this is probably not for you. If you are looking to improve you test taking skills and to UNDERSTAND what the NCLEX writers are looking for, this is great!

Poor Software Quality

Kaplan TOEFL CBT tests are really buggy and scores are not accurately calculated:

1. The program does not recognize correct answers where more than one answer has to be chosen.

2. The program does not retain the essay.

2. When shifting from the general test feedback section to a specific section analysis (reading, listening or structure) and back again to the general feedback section, all the scores for the test change. You have to go back to the Main Menu to retrive the original scores for the test.

3. When re-taking the same test for a second time, the whole program locked and I could not verify my answers.

This book is the best option for hispanic people . I did the TOEFL test and I have got 200 in the computer based test.

Listening good - remaining correct

I think the listening of the products is good (several lessons with the paper transcript).

However, the grammar part is pretty short (but with some interesting samples and rules).

This book is not the best but it can be useful when combined with other books like the Barrons, Model Test, Nelson, ...

Did Nicolas Copernicus steal his notion that the earth orbited the sun from an Islamic astronomer who lived three centuries earlier? "The jury is still out," writes Dick Teresi, whose intriguing survey of the non-Western roots of modern science offers several worthy arguments that Copernicus in fact ripped off Nasir al-Din al-Tusi. Common belief is that Westerners have been the mainspring of most scientific and technical achievement, but in Lost Discoveries Teresi shows that other cultures had arrived at much of the same knowledge at earlier dates. The Babylonians were using the Pythagorean theorem at least 15 centuries before Pythagoras drew his first triangle, and in A.D. 200 a Chinese mathematician calculated an incredibly accurate value for pi. The Mayans and other Mesoamericans were outstanding sky watchers and stargazers. The greatest advances occurred in math and astronomy, though Teresi also devotes chapters to physics, geology, chemistry, technology, and even cosmology. Science journalist Teresi (coauthor of The God Particle) has combed the literature to catalogue the scientific advances made by early non-Western societies and to determine their impact on Western science. His work spans millennia and encompasses the full extent of the globe. He points out, for example, that five millennia ago the Sumerians concluded that the earth was round. He also provides information on cultures of the Middle East, India, China, Africa and Oceania, as well as a host of New World cultures, predominately those of Mesoamerica. Throughout, readers learn that scientific knowledge of various sorts in diverse forms has been a part of all cultures. In chapters on mathematics, astronomy, cosmology, physics, geology, chemistry and technology, Teresi makes a convincing argument that Western science has often been indebted to advances made elsewhere (mineralogy was studied in Africa as early as 5000 B.C.). Teresi is at his strongest in the section on mathematics, where he discusses the evolution of Arabic numerals from the ancient Indians and the earliest conceptualizations of zero and infinity. Much less compelling are his assertions that early societies foreshadowed the ideas of quantum mechanics. Although a bit uneven, Teresi offers a great deal of fascinating material largely ignored by many histories of science.

What a terrific read! Teresi, a reviewer, essayist, and cofounder of Omni magazine, brings to light the many fascinating advances made by ancient, non-Western cultures. If you think that modern science is rooted in the golden age of Greece, you owe it to yourself to read his book. Supported by exhaustive research and a board of expert advisers, the author details the rich intellectual gifts from peoples whose histories are often neglected by our Eurocentric culture. He explores important contributions in the areas of mathematics, astronomy, cosmology, physics, geology, chemistry, and technology made by Pacific Islanders, Africans, Chinese, Indians, Arabs, and others. While it is an excellent multidisciplinary text for college-level classes, Teresi's work will also appeal to readers interested in science and intrigued by cultural histories. Fascinating ancient beliefs with tenuous modern connections

The author of "Lost Discoveries" claims he began to write "with the purpose of showing that the pursuit of evidence of nonwhite science is a fruitless endeavor," but his goal changed when he kept finding "examples of ancient and medieval non-Western science that equaled and often surpassed ancient Greek learning." The book he wrote instead is a compendium of miscellaneous ancient, non-Western discoveries or beliefs in what he calls the "hard sciences." (An unfortunate lapse: By "nonwhite," Teresi apparently means non-European; his investigation includes other Caucasian civilizations.)
Non-Western scientific background is definitely a topic worthy of a book for the general reader, and, although there's some fascinating stuff here (and a solid bibliography that will expand anyone's reading list), "Lost Discoveries" suffers from several shortcomings. One problem is the book's organization. Teresi divides his discussion into distinctions that were unknown a few centuries ago--mathematics, astronomy, cosmology, physics, geology, chemistry, and technology--and then divides each of these chapters by localities. As a result, the book has little narrative flow and makes for some awfully dry reading--the type of disconnected paragraphs one usually finds in textbooks or reference works. I found it difficult to read this book for more than a few pages at a stretch.
Furthermore, since modern scientific specialties were, of course, unknown to ancient investigators, his categorization results in some odd choices. For example, beliefs concerning the shape of the earth (round, flat, or square) are discussed in geology as well as cosmology. Similarly, he arbitrarily divides up the work of alchemists among several chapters. Since ancient and medieval studies span many disciplines, there is a lot of annoying (and often verbatim) repetition: we read about the yin-yang duality and ch'i in the sections on astronomy, physics, geology, and chemistry; about Jainism with regards to cosmology, physics, and chemistry; and how Avicenna influenced physics, geology, and chemistry.
Teresi was cofounder of Omni Magazine, which had a reputation (some might call it notoriety) for including articles on topics that strayed well beyond science and into paranormal exploration and New Age quackery. Although "Lost Discoveries" is usually on firmer scientific ground, the author occasionally recalls his earlier career with an eager enthusiasm to find direct or symbolic connections between ancient learning and modern scientific investigation. This is particularly true in his chapter on cosmology. (Teresi's obvious distaste for Big Bang theory doesn't help here.) The Mangaian creation myth, describing an infant universe emerging from a coconut root, may offer interesting literary and cultural insights, but it in no way "anticipates" modern cosmological theories of an inflationary universe. Elsewhere, it's simply preposterous to find intimations of quantum theory in the ancient Indian "yadrccha" (chance) or of the Higgs field in the Buddhist "maya" (the weight of the universe). One may as well argue that William Bennett is a quantum physicist every time he walks into a casino.
It's too bad that Teresi didn't organize his research by civilization and time period, compare these societies on their own terms (rather than ours), chart their influences on each other and on subsequent cultures, and avoid misguided attempts to find inklings of 21st-century theories and knowledge in every ancient myth. Readers looking for a stronger investigation of the wonders of non-Western science, technology, and civilization should check out Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel" or Felipe Fernandez-Armesto's "Civilizations."

An innaccurate, poorly written, worthless book on a fascinating subject

This book is about the scientific achievements of non-Western peoples such as the Babylonians, Arabs, Mayans, Chinese and others. This is a fascinating subject that is given inadequate attention, and thus this could have been a great book. Unfortunately it's trash.

The book's author, Dick Teresi, is formerly from Omni magazine, a "science" magazine best known for its credulity about UFOs and the paranormal- not the best sign. The book is badly written, full of innaccuracies, exaggerations, and misinterpretations. At his loopiest, Teresi insists that ancient peoples anticipated modern theories such as quantum mechanics and modern cosmology, based upon very vague connections to their religious and metaphysicial beleifs. This rather indicates that Teresi has a limited understanding of the basis of science itself (based upon verifiability and predictability) and probably isn't qualified to write a book on this subject

Teresi also seems to have a big axe to grind against the West and against Western science, and the book is full of denigrations of Western civilization. Teresi goes beyond noting that it was influenced by non-Western achievements and seems to argue that it stole all its achievements from them. After awhile, this becomes irritating, especially since his reasoning is so poor.

The book had a lot of interesting information that I hadn't heard before, but given the book's low credibility, I was never sure whether the info was trustworthy.

It's too bad, because it's a fascinating subject, which deserves a better-written popularization than this.

Poorly Written and Full of Inaccuracies

I bought this book because I liked its premise. However, I was thoroughly disappointed before I could even finish the first chapter. The book is filled with repetitious statements on the one hand and inconsistancies on the other. If you can get over the poor writing style, you will come up against the flagrant factual errors. For example, Teresi denegrates the Greeks for thinking the world is flat. Huh? Most of the greatest Greek philosophers, including Pythagoras and Ptolemy, thought Earth was a sphere. Aristotle even used the evidence that Earth casts a round shadow on the moon during an eclipse to support this idea.

This was just one of many factual errors that popped out at me while I tried to read this poorly executed book. As an archaeologist myself, I couldn't agree more that non-Westerners have made great contributions to science. However, believe it or not, so have Westerners!

Helped Me Ace the Test!

This book is simply amazing. It really goes into the specifics that are often tested on the SAT II. It has great practice problems at the end of each section, and actual SAT II's from the past with explanations for each of the answers. In addition, the book gives helpful test-taking strategies. After reiterating my previous knowledge of U.S. History with this book, I got a 790 on the SAT II. It helped so much! My only warning is that it is quite long and is not good for last minute review or cramming.

This book is absolutely amazing. I originally bought two other brands, but this has the most complete and specific details and really tells you everything you need to know for the SAT II.

Wasn't so impressed

This book offers a very comprehensive review to US History, and I do recommend it for anyone who wishes to take the SAT II. However, I have two major issues with it:
1) This book, although it contains all of the facts, is poorly written. In addition to the myriad of mispellings (and there were A LOT) and some inaccurate facts, the authors neglect simple writing mechanics that we all learned in 7th grade, such as avoiding repetition and varying sentence structure and word choice. I might seem nitpicky, but you will see what I mean when you read it. The unacceptably low quality of writing of certain chapters provides an exceptionally dull read, a problem when your goal is not to fall asleep but to absorb its contents. It's as if this book was rushed to press without a single decent editing. Yes, it's that bad.
2) The scale provided for the practice tests is misleading. Out of 90 questions on the test, according to the Kaplan's scale, a raw score of 81 is still an 800, and a raw score of 60 is a 710. (Raw score, for standardized test novices, is [# right answers] - [# wrong answers / 4]. Therefore, if you get 64 right, 16 wrong, and skip the rest, your RS is 60.)
The week preceeding the SATII, I took a few practice tests and scored consistantly in the 770-790 range. I felt that I was completely prepared to get a similar score on the actual test. I walked out of the SATII feeling that I did even better than on the practice ones; on a history test problems are either right or wrong (there's no possibility of careless mistakes such as on a math exam), so I had a good feeling of how I did. I was shocked, therefore, to recieve a 710 on the test. I know that I got more than 2/3rds right, and considering that this was the 5th SATII that I have taken, the 80-point discrepancy can not be blamed on poor test-taking skills or nervousness on test-day. The Kaplan's scale is waaaayy off and gives a false sense that you're going to do far better than how you really do.
Still, I recommend this book. However, be warned that this book is poorly written and edited and has a scale that is inaccurate and misleading.
