As this massive guide shows, anti-clutter expert Walsh’s expertise extends well beyond closets and cabinets. The star of TLC’s Clean Sweep offers advice on how to organize your whole life, from education ("Plan Your Course of Study in College") to finances ("Organize a Loan Application") to social life ("Plan a Prom"). And while you may not think you need to know what to do in case of an Ebola outbreak, can it hurt to be prepared? Most of the 500 subjects are covered in a page of clear, commonsensical advice, with warnings and extra little tips highlighted along the margins of the page. You may think more than one page is needed to explain how to be happy, but Walsh actually offers a concise summary of the basic points found in hundreds of self-help books. You could save yourself a lot of time by getting this useful compendium.

From Booklist
Don't fool yourself. This is so much more than simple organization; in fact, cable TV Clean Sweep host Walsh has corralled 11 contributors to help cover the universe of how-to's. Inside the 16 sections are 501 activities, both the usual and out-of-the-ordinary tasks, from getting organized and planning a remodeling project to joining the Peace Corps or becoming an astronaut. Each features the step-by-step procedures, tips, a warning (if necessary), and "who knew?"--additional advice designed to make the activity a success: for instance, for running errands, arrange sticky notes in the sequence of the stops you need to make. A personal favorite may turn out to be the last activity--be happy--which features steps like dream big, make a conscious decision to be happy, eat chocolate, work out, find satisfaction in little things, and take care of yourself. A great humane reference anytime, anywhere, for any occasion. Barbara Jacobs

Oddly Disappointing
By Peggy
It's hard to describe a book of over 500 pages as superficial, but that's exactly what it is. Chopping up complicated problems into a half-dozen "steps" might make them seem more achievable, and it does make fairly entertaining reading, but it trivializes the very real problems that I think most people would buy a book on organization for. I don't think it will help you get a handle on your paperwork or household clutter, won't help you organize your weekly schedule any better, and won't give you a more serene approach to inevitable problems. Elements of those challenges are touched on in dozens of one-page chapters, but not in a systematic way. This book makes you work way to hard to dig out the advice you need.

Reading through the other reviews, I note that most say they look forward to reading the book or plan to keep it as a reference. That's fine, but it doesn't make it a great book on organization for those who want to get or stay organized. For them, a single page to "Create a Flawless Filing System" is inadequate and a comparable amount devoted to "Become President of the United States" is absurd.

Big Disappointment
By Anne Masterson
I had high hopes for this book based on the 5 star reviews, and they were not even close to being met. Many of the lists were overly simplistic without any helpful organizing tips at all. Even more annoying was that virtually every list crossed referenced at least one other list, so one had to keep flipping around to get some sort of cohesive idea of what the organizational tips were. Perhaps if less time had been spent on titles like "how to win an academy award" , "how to fend off pirates" and/or "what to do in an ebola break out" (I am not kidding, these are actual lists)and more on actual real life organizing, I would have gotten much more out of this book.

When Peter says "Everything," he means it!
By Barbara R. Herbert
I've been following Peter Walsh's advice since "Clean Sweep" was first broadcast, and it makes a world of difference. To have this advice - and more - in one place, accessible at any time, is invaluable! He addresses just about anything that comes up in life - home and garden, personal issues, office, social, careers - you name it! Each entry has step-by-step instructions, along with "Tips," "Who Knew?" and "Warning" notes on the sidebar. The instructions are clearly written and easy to follow. Anyone who is "born organized" will find that this is a great confirmation of what they've been doing...and they will still learn more tips! A definite 5-star rating, and worth every penny! You won't regret buying this book - I've read a lot of organizing books, but Peter's is definitely the best of the lot!

From Publishers Weekly
Urban, a psychology Ph.D. specializing in "peak performance," draws on his own life experiences, wisdom imparted by his mentors and basketball coaches, observations of high school and college students, and the writings of other self-help gurus like Stephen Covey and M. Scott Peck to compile this catechism of conventional truisms. According to Urban, life’s great lessons are exactly what you always dreaded they’d be (they’re also his chapter titles): life is hard and not always fair; there’s no substitute for hard work; you have to give up something to get something. Although slightly disdainful of the hug-happy self-esteem movement, Urban does insist that we all have a potential to live up to. Fortunately, since "attitude is far more important than intelligence, education, special talent, or luck," with enough positive thinking success is virtually assured—as long as we buckle down, set goals and stick with them, manage our time efficiently and find Jesus Christ or some other kind of spiritual content to nourish our lives. Urban is an ex-high school teacher, a self-admitted former "growth junkie" and a leader of the "character education" movement, and is thus awash in good lessons; his prose, though, tends toward the bland and platitudinous, which may make the lessons hard for some to swallow.

Twenty Things I Want My Kids to Know
By A Customer
A very thought provoking overview of the simple (yet not so simple) job of making the most of your life. Written in a down-to earth style that makes it easy to understand, yet still challenges you to reach to become more of what is good and right in order to succeed in life. Begins with a look at what success is and is not, and moves on to how your choices and reactions to circumstances direct where your life will go. Topics include, Life is hard, Life is Fun, Attitude, Habits, Thankfulness, Respect, Honesty, Kindness, Self-motivation, Goals, Hard work, Sacrifice, Time Management, Self image, Balanced Care of Body, Mind and Spirit, and Persistance in the Face of Failure. A great choice for teachers, parents and those who guide youth. A very enjoyable read...because it is so true! I'm planning on giving several as gifts! What a fabulous book! Read it! You won't be sorry!

By Paul
Its timeless message on character education should be read by every child, parent and teacher. It is sure to become a classic.
I have given away at least five copies to family and friends!
It was awarded Best Inspirational Book of the Year 2000 by Writer's Digest Magazine.
I have donated a few select books that have been added to my local Public Library. This is by far the best inspirational and motivational book I have read so far. It contains the wisdom of the ages and essential life truths.
A few of the books I have donated are: HOW TO SUCCEED IN LIFE: Ideas and Principles They Don't Teach in School by Ned Grossman, MASTER SUCCESS: Create a Life of Purpose, Passion, Peace and Prosperity by Bill FitzPatrick, a local author from Natick, MA, FREEDOM FROM FEAR: Learn How to Live Life to the Fullest by Mark Matteson, The story of one man's discovery of simple truths that lead to wealth, joy and peace of mind, and I DARE YOU By William H. Danforth.
I highly recommend Life's Greatest Lessons, as it teaches the wisdom of the ages. This book is so wonderful, that after I finished it, I went back and re-read it again. Periodically, I will reread certain chapters again. I am very select in what I choose to donate to the library. I am donating it to the library so it can benefit the most people possible. This book on character education is a topic not normally taught in schools. It is an "owner's manual for a happy and successful life." It describes in a simple easy to understand manner, common-sense life skills that can be applied immediately to enhance and enrich anyone's life.

Not For Everyone
By Natasha Smith
First of all, I expected to like this book. The raving reviews made it seem inevitable. And glancing through the table of contents, well...it's a toss-up. The principles are pretty basic, so you expect Urban to have something really profound to say about each one.

But two of his starting points don't quite align with mine. First of all, let's look at the "Attitude is a Choice" chapter. He says we have "the ability to choose our own attitude in any given set of circumstances." To some extent, this can be useful. And he's realistic about the "positive thinking" movement, clarifying that he doesn't just mean wishful thinking, but instead "constructive thinking." Still, after having read Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America and Gore's Bluebird: Women and the New Psychology of Happiness, I'm less inclined to believe that this attitude-changing approach is altogether wholesome. Experiencing the full range of human emotion is part of life, and even if Urban allows for some of it, it's incomplete. "People who succeed in life don't *think* they can, they *believe* they can," he says, and while he grants that this belief must come from a solid foundation, it still seems to place blame on people who just don't believe in themselves enough. So that's Misleading Starting Point #1: a spin-off of "positive thinking" as a tool for success.

Secondly, he's coming from a Judeo-Christian perspective. I actually flipped to his recommended books and saw that "Mere Christianity" is #2, so this wasn't my imagination. The point is, his moral standpoint is different from mine, and may be different from yours. This book is probably great for lots of people. It just isn't for everyone.

Again, the principles aren't groundbreaking. If you still equate money with success, you will probably learn a fair amount. For someone who's done significant reading in the genre, or has a lot of life experience, you may want to read through the table of contents to see whether there's anything new to be gleaned from it.

Random Family: Love, Drugs, Trouble, and Coming of Age in the Bronx, by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc

This New York Times bestseller intimately depicts urban life in a gripping book that slips behind cold statistics and sensationalism to reveal the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour.

In her extraordinary bestseller, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc immerses readers in the intricacies of the ghetto, revealing the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour, gold-drenched drug dealers, and street-corner society. Focusing on two romances—Jessica’s dizzying infatuation with a hugely successful young heroin dealer, Boy George, and Coco’s first love with Jessica's little brother, Cesar—Random Family is the story of young people trying to outrun their destinies. Jessica and Boy George ride the wild adventure between riches and ruin, while Coco and Cesar stick closer to the street, all four caught in a precarious dance between survival and death. Friends get murdered; the DEA and FBI investigate Boy George; Cesar becomes a fugitive; Jessica and Coco endure homelessness, betrayal, the heartbreaking separation of prison, and, throughout it all, the insidious damage of poverty.

Charting the tumultuous cycle of the generations—as girls become mothers, boys become criminals, and hope struggles against deprivation—LeBlanc slips behind the cold statistics and sensationalism and comes back with a riveting, haunting, and true story.

From Publishers Weekly
Politicians rail about welfare queens, crack babies and deadbeat dads, but what do they know about the real struggle it takes to survive being poor? Journalist LeBlanc spent some 10 years researching and interviewing one extended family-mother Lourdes, daughter Jessica, daughter-in-law Coco and all their boyfriends, children and in-laws-from the Bronx to Troy, N.Y., in and out of public housing, emergency rooms, prisons and courtrooms. LeBlanc's close listening produced this extraordinary book, a rare look at the world from the subjects' point of view. Readers learn that prison is just an extension of the neighborhood, a place most men enter and a rare few leave. They learn the realities of welfare: the myriad of misdemeanors that trigger reduction or termination of benefits, only compounding a desperate situation. They see teenaged drug dealers with incredible organizational and financial skills, 13-year-old girls having babies to keep their boyfriends interested, older women reminiscing about the "heavenly time" they spent in a public hospital's psychiatric ward and incarcerated men who find life's first peace and quiet in solitary confinement. More than anything, LeBlanc shows how demanding poverty is. Her prose is plain and unsentimental, blessedly jargon-free, and includidng street talk only when one of her subjects wants to "conversate." This fine work deserves attention from policy makers and general readers alike.

From Booklist
Journalist LeBlanc spent more than 10 years following two Latina women from the Bronx, and in this ambitious work, she tells their stories, beginning in the late 1980s with their young teen years. Older Jessica becomes a mistress to an enormously successful heroin dealer, and Coco falls for Jessica's brother, an aspiring gangster. The two women find love, weather abuse, have babies, endure their own and their partners' prison terms, and struggle with health problems, social systems, motherhood, their own mothers, the violence of their communities, and the uncertain future. LeBlanc's prose is sprawling and dense with cinematic detail--what people wore, ate, drove, listened to; where they lived; what they said--and she studiously removes herself from the story, letting her characters' day-to-day lives unfold in scenes that are both gripping and mundane and, like life, defy easy organization. What emerges is an important, unvarnished portrait of people living in deep urban poverty, beyond the statistics, hip-hop glamour, and stereotypes. Gillian Engberg

Review
Alex Kotlowitz author of There Are No Children Here A remarkable piece of reportage about a tucked-away corner of America... It's one compelling read.

Vogue A magnificent tour de force...An insider's narrative that grips from the start.

Janet Maslin The New York Times Mesmerizing...The artistry of this frank, enthralling book lies in the utter simplicity -- and careful, subtle selectivity -- with which LeBlanc plainly describes the determining events in what will now be unforgettable lives.

Newsweek Keenly observed, pitch-perfect...A dense, rich narrative that reads like a novel.

Los Angeles Times A nonfiction Middlemarch of the underclass...A new benchmark in the field of immersion journalism.

All-consuming read that leaves the reader to make up their own mind
By Jessica Lux
This is an amazing and all-consuming story. LeBlanc transports the reader into an extended family in the Bronx. She recounts the relationships, the fights, the betrayals, the drugs, the crime, the unintentional preganancies, the jail time, and much more for her intertwined cast of characters. Everything is presented as is--the only reflection on the characters' motivation is their own. LeBlanc does not try to extrapolate from their experiences or impart her own beliefs on the reader. The reader is left to draw his or her own conclusions from the interactions they read about.

It's easy enough to say women in the ghetto need to start using contraceptions and get off their butts and get jobs. I learned through the people in this book that life is much more complicated than that. Children aren't afforded learning opportunities because their parents are using drugs and having unsavory characters around. No one wakes the teenaged girls up to tell them about pregnancy. The girls have no sense of self worth and want to have children to force the fathers of their kids to love them. Every woman in here was once sexually abused, so responsible mothers can't their there children with friends or family members who have random people traipsing through the house, and that prevents them from getting jobs and getting out of the house.

This book comes full-circle with the story of one Bronx family. It opens with Jessica, pregnant at age 16. It ends 16 years later with Jessica's daughter Serena ready to get in as much trouble as her mother did at that age, despite the major strides Jessica has made at becoming a functioning member of society.

LeBlanc's dedication to her task--combing through trial records, wiretaps, police reports, child welfare reports, and conducting years of interviews--has really paid off in this compelling narrative.

Very mixed emotions
By Amazon Customer
I grew up in one of the neighborhoods portrayed in this book, and while I believe the author has accurately described Jessica, Coco and their friends and relatives, these people are not representative of everyone who lives in the South Bronx. There are many, many people in these neighborhoods who shun the drug-dealing and thug lifestyle. These people work hard at low paying jobs (think doormen, porters, mailroom clerks, cashiers) and scrimp and save to send their children to Catholic school. They don't hang out on street corners and they don't allow their children to do so either. And they are the victims of people like Boy George and Cesar, they are the ones whose apartments are robbed, whose children are beaten on the way home from school, whose daughters are harassed.

I hate the idea that middle-class white liberals are reading this book and getting some kind of voyeuristic thrill. I suspect they wouldn't be nearly as enthralled by a book that chronicled the lives of the people I've described above, the ones who try to live upstanding lives despite overwhelming poverty and the threats of the street.

This has to be one of the best books that I have ever read. LeBlanc grasped "it", the life, the city, the love or lack there of, the lifestyle, the losses and the helplessness. I read this book like I would have an article in Rolling Stone, holding on to every word, wanting to know what happened next. I could not put it down. It was a personal experience for me, having lived a portion of my life like the girls in Random Family. I must say that one of my frustrations has been that there are not enough of these kind of stories out there for us to read. This is the reality of our world, our social structure. Welfare is not a luxury, housing systems are not free living, not all criminals should remain prisioners. These are everyday people caught up in a cycle, a family cyle, generation to generation. These are our neighbors, the woman at the supermarket, the girl at the doctors office, just random people. And this book is just about that, a random family. There are so many families like this, torn apart, looking for the love that so often is mistaken for money, sex or a drug. I would recommend this book to anyone who asked. I believe that Ms. LeBlanc will be one of the greatest journalists of all time. I am so impressed with her writing and her willingness to study her subjects, living in less that acceptable accomodations, dedicating herself and her life to the research, becoming apart of their families. I consider this book one of the best, I hope that you will too.

Indecent Secrets: The Infamous Murri Murder Affair, by Christina Vella

On a hot summer day in Italy in 1902, the brutally stabbed body of Count Francesco Bonmartini was discovered, by means of its decomposing stench, inside his locked apartment. He was a typical Italian provincial aristocrat in all but one way: he had married into a prominent but deeply troubled family. His father-in-law was one of the nation's most famous doctors. His wife, Linda, a young freethinker, was the apple of her father's eye. Linda's brother dabbled in anarchism. Linda's lover was her father's top assistant. Her relations with them were illicit, incestuous -- and murderous. The scandal that erupted was a top news story in Europe and America for three consecutive years. Investigators uncovered successive layers of a conspiracy that constantly twisted and changed its shape. The suspects included all these men as well as their servants and lovers. There was a diverse array of murder weapons, including knives, heavy pellets, and poison. There were rumors of missing accomplices. Intimate relations among many suspects were uncovered through sensational letters and testimonials. Witnesses died mysteriously. A suspect tried to kill himself. One question lingered throughout and still haunts researchers today: what role did Bonmartini's widow, Linda, known as "The Enchantress," play? Was she the spider at the center of the vast web, or did the plot originate with the key men who loved her so desperately?Scholar and writer Christina Vella combines meticulous research with a novelist's eye for a great story. As she unspools the tight, tense drama, she offers a fascinating picture of Italian society in the early 20th century, with a historian's insights into life at both the top and thebottom. From sexual dysfunctions, to prison conditions, to the patronage systems that permeated medicine, law, and politics, the Bonmartini murder provides a window into a rich world. The result is an unforgettable story and an invaluable introduction to an Italy that is still recognizable today.

Starred Review. Courtroom buffs captivated by such media circuses as the Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson trials should relish Vella's retelling of a crime that in its day was as notorious. The 1902 stabbing of an aristocratic Italian doctor in his home in Bologna led to a massive investigation and the arrests of his widow, his brother-in-law and several others. While there was little genuine mystery about whose hand landed the fatal blows (one of which was powerful enough to shatter the victim's breastbone)—the brother-in-law confessed in an effort to spare his sister from prosecution—there were enough unanswered questions, as well as salacious rumors, to captivate the Italian public for years. The widow's complex, and possibly incestuous, relationships with her brother and father, as well as her extramarital affair, all invited scrutiny and piqued public curiosity. Despite an occasional lapse into an artless simile ("like the silkworms on his mulberry trees, he spent his days on the estate"), Vella has repeated the success of her earlier Intimate Enemies with a gripping narrative filled with complicated and enigmatic figures that should enthrall a wide readership. 16 pages of b&w photos, not seen by PW.

From Booklist
The tempestuous marriage of Linda Murri and Francesco Bonmartini abruptly dissolved with the husband's murder in 1902. A sensation in fin de siecle Italy, the case generated such contradictory testimony, salaciousness, and social conflict that newspapers dined out on it for years. Since the wife's socialist brother admitted to the killing, his self-defense defense depended on defaming the dead man, a conservative Catholic landowner whose rusticity repulsed Linda, the conniving daughter of Bologna's premier medical doctor. These characters and their supporting cast of obsessive paramours and weak-willed accomplices spring from the archives in Vella's psychologically subtle account. Italians hung on details leaked from the investigation and recomposed into competing narratives by lawyers. "The Murri case was better than a novel and promised to last longer," as Vella comments so pungently on the tragedy. And today's true-crime readers will be as anxious to learn the verdict as yesteryear's aficionados of scandal were. Astutely melding legalities and personalities into the historical Italian society, Vella fashions a riveting reconstruction. Gilbert Taylor

Sandra Berlin's got it all. She's living in Manhattan and climbing the editorial ladder at ultrachic fashion magazine Jolie! and she's newly engaged to her high school sweetheart, Bucky Ross. Bucky's her knight in shining WASP armor: ad executive and descendant of Betsy Ross, with whom she'll live in suburban Tudor splendor and have beautiful children. At least that's the plan. Until Sandy meets Bucky's other fiancée. Who tells her about the third.
Sandy's heartbreak, betrayal, and the excruciating blind dates that follow paint a shrewd, comic, dead-on portrait of the suddenly single life and remind us that even when fantasy crashes head-on into hard reality, love can still surprise us in the most unexpected ways.

Amazon.com Review
Me Times Three narrator Sandra Berlin has just discovered that her fiancé has been cheating on her with not one but two women. She's looking for a support group, one where "I could stand up and say, 'Hi, I'm Sandra and I'm a gullible, pathetic sap.'" Sandra's journey from sap to grownup provides the plot line for the first novel from Alex Witchel, a Style reporter for the New York Times. But the real raison d'être of the novel is the opportunity for Witchel to flaunt her delightfully insiderish view of Manhattan. Sandra works for Jolie, a fashion magazine that sounds a lot like Elle, under the fearsome Susie, a mercurial editor who seems determined to ruin every story Sandra turns in. Plotting and character aren't Witchel's strong points, but the verisimilitude of her evocation of Manhattan media life makes Me Times Three a fun, fluffy romp. --Claire Dederer

From Publishers Weekly
New York Times Style reporter Witchel makes her initial foray into fiction with a darkly humorous take on a young woman's growing pains. In late 1980s New York, Sandra Berlin, an editorial assistant at fashion rag Jolie!, enjoys wild times with her requisitely gay best friend Paul Romano, but longs for a secure, suburban family life and ever-elusive social acceptance. She thinks her dreams are coming true when WASPy longtime boyfriend (and Betsy Ross descendant) Bucky finally proposes, and she plans "to waste no time propagating little heirs to the American flag." But she soon must scramble to regain her balance after the rug is pulled out from under her: she's not Bucky's only fiancie; in fact, two other women are preparing to walk down the aisle with him. The first half of the novel is pitched perfectly between humor and angst, but in the second half the plot takes a sobering turn. Sandra faces tragedy when the specter of AIDS raises its ugly head, and only then does she begin coping with the disillusionment of life's unexpected turns. The author will find an audience with readers who follow her in the Times, or who are curious about the talents of Mrs. Frank Rich. But this is a disappointing offering from a writer whose privileged perspective on the culture, manner and style of New York in its late 20th-century heyday might have yielded something less predictable, or at least more titillatingly revealing. (Feb. 1)Forecast: Witchel's name alone, stamped on an eye-catching bright yellow jacket, should sell out the novel's 75,000 first printing, but her future as a fiction writer is less certain.

Excellent! Sorry to see the negative feedback!

Hmmm... I wonder if they read the same book I did. I found it delightful, true to life, funny, satirical, and enlightening. I am 51, so I enjoyed the younger woman outlook with the maturity of having been through some of those same situations! The fractured fairy tales interspersed really added to and interpreted the maturity that the main character, Sandra Berlin, gained as the story progressed. The story of her gay best friend was very real to me and I thought she did an excellent job of covering all the bases in dealing with the death and dying of a friend with AIDS. I listened to it on an audiotape first and then purchased a copy. It was excellent entertainment during my daily commute.

Rewrite, please
By A Customer
Sandra Berlin is a twenty-something young woman who comes to New York and lands herself a job on a new magazine, working under a mean-natured boss. She discovers in short order that her long-time boyfriend and current fiance is engaged to two other women besides herself (no explanation as to what's going on there) and that her gay best friend had AIDS. She also meets a handsome, talented, on-the-verge-of-eligible writer.
The rest of the story plays out without any surprises. In fact, that is pretty much the story, which moves with facility but not a lot of substance along to its inevitable ending.
Alex Witchel writes well when it comes to manipulating the language and putting together a nice turn of phrase. And her premise has a lot of potential. But the packaging and marketing promise humor that isn't there, and the overwhelming reaction on finishing the book is likely to be "So what?" In a market saturated with books about twenty-somethings finding the ideal man, it's a pity she didn't have an editor at least as good as her protagonist to push for one more rewrite.

I wanted to like this book . . . but . . .
By A Customer
The writing is good. The story has potential but it didn't keep me interested. I finally had to stop after 160 pages. I don't think it's fair to call it unoriginal--if I had read it before, say Bridget Jones and others like it--than it would have been the first of its kind at least through my eyes. I think the author tries to be funny and a lot of it falls flat, and I simply can't believe this main character is actually a smart person. The plot indicates otherwise. Again, I wanted to like this book. It's a worthy effort, but I think the talented author can do better.
