A jewel for anyone studying ancient esoteric wisdom

"A Wish Can Change Your Life" could be called "How to Enhance and Appreciate Your Own Life While Making the World a Better Place for All Human Beings That You Come in Contact With." This book is well written and filled with smile inspiring wit. It is thought challenging, spiritually stimulating and action provoking. The authors impart a tremendous amount of beautiful insight and knowledge into 272 pages that contain mythological stories from all over the world, introspective meditations and interactive exercises. Though deep in content, the book is written so that even an older child can enjoy the stories and application of esoteric instruction. The concepts are easy to understand and a joy to implement. I have been practicing Kabbalah from this book for over a year and it has profoundly changed my life. I attest - wishes do come true! I hope that you give your wish a chance to change your life too!

Five stars just aren't enough

For those who already know something about Kabbalah this book offers bold and exciting new insights. And for those who are newcomers to the subject prepare yourself for an empowering and always entertaining journey through the Tree of Life. For this is no ordinary book, this is an experiential sequence of life-altering encounters with the ten spheres of the Tree itself. And upon completion of the book I am certain that each and every reader will look afresh both at themselves and their world. Written with wit, originality, and an expansive grasp of history, mythology, religion and popular culture, this is a book that I can reccomend without hesitation.

This book is amazing and easy to use

I have been teaching creative expression and manifestation classes and this book really brings the concepts to reality. Most Kabbalah books are hard to understand and complicated. This one is not! The book is a magical journey and should not be done alone. The miracles are so profound you will want someone doing it with you to share your discoveries. The story telling is wonderful and the activities are clear and insightful. I have read this book 5 times or more and I see something new each time. I was so inspired, started teaching workshops around this topic just to say in community and keep the energy going around wishes and dreams fulfilled. Get a copy for yourself and get a copy for a friend, you will love this book.

Chapter 1

1: USING THIS BOOK

There can be no question that the romance, if not downright mysticism, of opening a bottle of Bordeaux from a famous château has a grip and allure that are hard to resist. For years writers have written glowing accounts of Bordeaux wines, sometimes giving them more respect and exalted status than they have deserved. How often has that fine bottle of Bordeaux from what was allegedly an excellent vintage turned out to be diluted, barely palatable, or even repugnant? How often has a wine from a famous Château let you and your friends down when tasted? On the other hand, how often has a vintage written off by the critics provided some of your most enjoyable bottles of Bordeaux? And how often have you tasted a great Bordeaux wine, only to learn that the name of the Château is uncelebrated?

This book is about just such matters. It is a wine consumer's guide to Bordeaux. Who is making Bordeaux's best and worst wines? What has a specific chateau's track record been over the last 20-30 years? Which châteaux are overrated and overpriced, and, of course, which are underrated and underpriced? These issues are discussed in detail.

The evaluations that are contained in this work are the result of extensive tastings conducted in Bordeaux and in America. I have been visiting Bordeaux every year since 1970, and since 1978 I have gone to Bordeaux as a professional at least twice a year to conduct barrel tastings of the young wines, as well as to do comparative tastings of different wines and vintages that have been bottled and released for sale. Since 1970 I have tasted most of the wines in the top years a half dozen or more times.

It is patently unfair to an estate to issue a final judgment about a wine after tasting it only once. Consequently, when I do tastings of young Bordeaux, I try to taste them as many times as possible to get a clear, concise picture of the wine's quality and potential. I have often equated the tasting of an infant, unbottled wine with that of taking a photograph of a long-distance runner at the beginning of a race. One look or tasting of such a wine is only a split-second glimpse of an object that is constantly changing and moving. To effectively evaluate the performance and quality in a given vintage, one must look at the wine time after time during its 16-24-month prebottling evolution and then evaluate it numerous times after bottling to see if the quality or expected potential is still present.

Obviously, some wines as well as general vintages are much easier to assess than others. For certain, tasting young wine requires total concentration and an extreme dedication to tasting the wine as many times as possible in its youth, both at the individual Château and in comparative tastings against its peers. This is the only valid method by which to obtain an accurate look at the quality and potential of the wine. For this reason, I travel to Bordeaux at least twice a year, spending over a month in the region each year visiting all the major châteaux in all of the principal appellations of the Médoc, Graves, Sauternes, St.-Emilion, and Pomerol.

The châteaux visits and interviews with the winemakers are extremely important in accumulating the critical data about the growing season, harvest dates, and vinification of the chateau's wines. Most of the winemakers at the Bordeaux châteaux are remarkably straightforward and honest in their answers, whereas owners will go to great lengths to glorify the wine they have produced.

In addition to doing extensive visits to the specific Bordeaux châteaux in all appellations of Bordeaux in good, poor, and great vintages, I insist on comparative tastings of cask samples of these new vintages. For these tastings I call many of Bordeaux's leading négociants to set up what most consumers would call massive comparative day-long tastings of 60-100 wines. In groups of 10-15 wines at a time, an entire vintage, from major classified growths to minor Crus Bourgeois, can be reviewed several times over a course of 2 weeks of extensive tastings. Such tastings corroborate or refute the quality I have found to exist when I have visited the specific Château. Because I do these types of broad, all-inclusive tastings at least three times before the young Bordeaux wine is bottled, I am able to obtain numerous looks at the infant wine at 6, 9, and 18 months of age, which usually give a very clear picture of the wines' quality.

Despite the fact that young Bordeaux wines are constantly changing during their evolution and aging process in the barrel, the great wines of a given vintage are usually apparent. It has also been my experience that some wines that ultimately turn out to be good or very good may be unimpressive or just dumb when tasted in their youth from the cask. But the true superstars of a great vintage are sensational, whether they are 6 months or 20 months old.

When I taste young Bordeaux from the cask, I prefer to judge the wine after the final blend or assemblage has been completed. At this stage, the new wine has had only negligible aging in oak casks. For me, it is essential to look at a wine at this infant stage (normally in late March and early April following the vintage) because most wines can be judged without the influence of oak, which can mask fruit and impart additional tannin and aromas to the wine. What one sees at this stage is a naked wine that can be evaluated on the basis of its richness and ripeness of fruit, depth, concentration, body, acidity, and natural tannin content, unobscured by evidence of oak aging.

The most important component I look for in a young Bordeaux is fruit. Great vintages, characterized by ample amounts of sunshine and warmth, result in grapes that are fully mature and produce rich, ripe, deeply fruity wines. If the fruit is missing, or unripe and green, the wine can never be great. In contrast, grapes that are allowed to stay on the vine too long in hot, humid weather become over-ripe and taste pruny and sometimes raisiny and are also deficient in acidity. They too have little future. Recent vintages that, in their youth, throughout all appellations of Bordeaux, have been marked by the greatest ripeness, richness, and purity of fruit are 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1995, and 1996, all high-quality vintages for Bordeaux. Vintages that exhibited the least fruit and an annoying vegetal character have been 1974, 1977, and 1984, poor to mediocre vintages.

In early summer or fall following the vintage, I return to Bordeaux to get another extensive look at the wines. At this time the wines have settled down completely but are also marked by the scent of new oak barrels. The intense grapy character of their youth has begun to peel away, as the wines have now had at least 3-4 months of cask aging. If extensive tastings in March or April give a clear overall view of the vintage's level of quality, comprehensive tastings in June and again the second March following the vintage are almost always conclusive evidence of where the vintage stands in relation to other Bordeaux vintages and how specific wines relate in quality to each other.

With regard to vintages of Bordeaux in the bottle, I prefer to taste these wines in what is called a "blind tasting." A blind tasting can be either "single blind" or "double blind." This does not mean one is actually blindfolded and served the wines, but rather that in a single-blind tasting, the taster knows the wines are from Bordeaux but does not know the identities of the châteaux or the vintages. In a double-blind tasting, the taster knows nothing other than that several wines from anywhere in the world, in any order, from any vintage, are about to be served.

For bottled Bordeaux, I usually conduct all my Bordeaux tastings under single-blind conditions. I do not know the identity of the wine, but since I prefer to taste in peer groups, I always taste wines from the same vintage. Additionally, I never mix Bordeaux with non-Bordeaux wines, simply because whether it be California or Australia Cabernet Sauvignons, the wines are distinctly different, and while comparative tastings of Bordeaux versus California may be fun and make interesting reading, the results are never very reliable or especially meaningful to the wine consumer who desires the most accurate information. Remember that whether one employs a 100-point rating system or a 20-point rating system, the objectives and aims of professional wine evaluations are the same -- to assess the quality of the wine vis-a-vis its peers and to determine its relative value and importance in the international commercial world of wine.

When evaluating wines professionally, it goes without saying that proper glasses and the correct serving temperature of the wine must be prerequisites to any objective and meaningful tasting. Still the best book on Bordeaux, but imcomplete

I consider the latest iteration of Parker's Bordeaux book to be the best on the subject. While I do not agree with Parker or just about anyone else regarding the rating of Italian wines, Parker is right on target in his ratings for Bordeaux.

I find it interesting that Parker is a fan of the rich and opulent micro wines coming out of Pomerol and St. Emilion. There are strict Bordeaux traditionalists that don't care for these wines. I think they are great and usually agree with Parker. They simply add another dimension to the many styles of wine being made in the greatest wine producing area of the world.

Parker is extremely consistent and the only other taster that comes close is Stephen Tanzer. The Wine Spectator and James Suckling are pretty good, although I think they overrate too many wines in subpar vintages. Ironically, Spectator is not as big a fan of the decadent wines Parker likes from the right bank.

One caveat I have with the fourth addition is that useful tasting notes from some prior vintages for certain wines have been taken out and a handful of wines reviewed in the last version of the book are not even reviewed in this book. However, the book is still great if you're into Bordeaux.

Clive Coates's recent book on Bordeaux offers a good and interesting alternative, but it is not as complete nor does it have the depth of notes available from Parker.

My copy is already dog-eared

I just received this book for Christmas and it is already dog-eared. When many people think of Bordeaux they think of stratospherically priced wines. Actually for every $400 bottle of Chateau Latour 2000, there is a wonderful $25 bottle by an unsung producer. $25 may not be cheap, but if drinks like a $50 one I'm pretty happy. This book helps me find those lesser-known producers.
While Robert Parker certainly heaps praise on the most famous wines when they are worthy, he does not hesitate to criticize them when they fall short. He constantly points the readers to great values.
The book is organized by region and then by chateau. For many of the chateaux there is a copious amount of information: some history of the producer, a list of the wine's component grapes, and detailed descriptions of significant vintages for the last ten years.. Be sure to read the introductory sections for Parker's take on how richness of flavor is attained (strict pruning of vines, letting the fruit ripen, abstaining from filtering) and for much encouraging news about Bordeaux wine today. For one thing, he says that while the price gap between First Growths and unclassifieds can be great, never has the quality gap been so narrow. Great news for us bargain hunters !

The publication date for the Kindle edition is misleading

This review applies specifically to the Kindle edition.

The last time Robert Parker updated Bordeaux was for the 4th edition in 2003. It is a well written, informative book, but it is sadly out of date and little more than acuriosity for readers interested in the past 10 or so vintages. When the publisher created a Kindle version of the 2003 book,they apparently gave it a 2013 publication date. This is deceptive and misleading. This content appears to be from the 2003 edition, repackaged for Kindle, and therefore still badly out-dated.

Insightfull Book

I highly recommend this book for anyone that either professionally works with trauma survivors or is a survivor themselves. I am a person coming to terms with my life as a child in a violent family situation and the physical injuries I received some forty years ago. I found my inner thoughts and feelings being expressed on the pages of this book as if she had interviewed me!! Often she expressed what I had been feeling but had not quite found the words to express. It was definitely a cathartic experience reading this book. If you are a survivor like me, you may experience wild swings of emotion as you read this book.

Great for understanding CISM and other trauma-related issues

Janoff-Bulman describes what happens to a person, male or female, when dealing with sudden life-disrupting events. The two greatest "assumptions" or basic beliefs assaulted by trauma are that the world is safe and that I am a valuable asset in it. She speaks to victims and therapists alike in non-clinical terms that are healing and educational. Therapists could easily recommend this book to persons surviving traumatic events.

Good, easily understood material for the lay-person

who: 1. Wants a basic, cognitive foundation in understanding how personal schemas, or ways of looking at and interpreting the world, are formed; 2. How change that causes us to question our basic assumptions that a. The world is benevolent, b. The world is meaningful, and c. The self is worthy -- can lead to psychological trauma including uneasy heightened physiological responses, feelings of anxiety, and a confrontation with the illusion that we are immune to death. Janoff-Bulman argues that the "adjustment of survivors rests largely" on their level of disillusionment and whether they despair or remain hopeful after a traumatic experience. The author does a quite adequte job of explaining the personal benefits of working through the trauma and learning to cope with change, and explaining why the ones we love the most are sometimes the least helpful, or even harmful, in supporting us in developing a new self and world view. Instead of just leaving us there, the author continues by telling us how others can be helpful in different ways and the fact that no one person can "be everything" or sole supporter of a traumatized individual. Finally, we are given a criteria for "ordinary levels of effective functioning" that can be used to gauge recovery. Perhaps the most valuable portion of this book, though, are the extensive Notes and Listing of References that help one to expand their research into trauma effects and recovery. The negative of this book is the author's overindulgance in rehashing psychotherapy's classic view of dissociative states as, the least,counterproductive to recovery, and, at most proof of psychosis. The author might have spent more time discussing how denial, a mild dissociative state, is "underappreciated," and is actually a coping mechanism that protects one from the overwhelming jar of dealing with every aspect of trauma at once. Overall a very good tool for the lay-person to use in understanding why trauma feels so bad, why others don't seem to understand and can even blame the traumatized for their own plight, and finding assurance that the traumatic experience can lead to a stronger self-image and more flexible take on change and reality. Highly recommend this book be purchased and kept in a secure place for easy access when trauma does catch one off guard.

A FASCINATING BOOK ABOUT SIGN LANGUAGE

I bought this book after it caught my eye in the window of a local book store. (It cost half as much on Amazon.) Having worked for many years with disabled people who use communications devices, I'm always interested in the different ways humans communicate, and alternative ways to communicate other than speech. This book is a fascinating study of the development of sign languages around the world and how sign language works in comparison to spoken language. It also explains how babies and children learn languages, and how languages develop when groups of people speaking different languages are all thrown together and need to create a language to communicate.

It also provides a fascinating glimpse into a modern Bedoiun village in Israel, which has been settled for 250 years. Because of intermarriage, a high proportion of the village residents are deaf, and all members of the community, use sign language. Because of their isolation, this village has its own sign language which has developed. A group of linguists have been studying the villagers to trace the development of a brand new language, and to see how the human mind is "hard-wired' for language.

My only criticism, is that the author occasionally takes many pages to make a fairly obvious point, like when she explains that deaf singers will occasionally have "slips of the hand" where they will use one sign rather than a similar one. A simple point, but she goes on in great detail (too much) for pages. My advice, when you get to parts like this, just skim them, until she moves on. She's often made the point early on and is just belaboring it.

But, I still highly recommend this book! For any one with an interest in how humans communicate, it is an interesting and educational read.

Fabulous Informative Book!

Do not be misled by this boring title, the book is amazingly well written and presents complex subject matter in a way that is interesting and illuminating. It weaves together the story of a modern group of users of a remote Bedouin sign language with a well-researched distillation of the history of language, cognitive development, sign language and sociolinguistics. It is both technical and user-friendly, scholarly and accessible for anyone who is remotely interested in sign language. As an ASL interpreter, I found it filled in many gaps in my own knowledge and I recommend it to anyone who wants to get all the pertinent up-to-date research and theory on sign language from one reliable source without having to buy a bunch of expensive textbooks. I have recommended it to my friends and bought a 2nd copy just to loan out. It's THAT GOOD. READ IT.

The History and Linguistics of Sign Language

Though marketed as an insider look at an isolated sign-language-speaking Middle-Eastern village, this book is much more a history of sign language. The author's foremost interest is in PROVING that sign language is, in fact, an actual language, rather than a series of mimetic gestures. Though extremely interesting, at times Fox is a bit repetitive; I felt I was reading a disseration rather than a journalistic endeavor. In the end, the book's "payoff" - the concluding description of the field work done in the Middle Eastern village - is only four pages long. Don't read this book to learn specifically about the community featured on the cover; read it to learn about sign language: its history and its unique linguistic features. Overall, worthwhile and engaging reading.

These intimate, highly articulate letters reveal the tender side of Sartre's deep dependency on his longtime partner, de Beauvoir. Beginning when Sartre was a 21-year-old student, an awkward lover courting his first love, the correspondence tracks the dynamic shifts of their lives though the 1930s, a decade that brought forth his first published novel, Nausea (1937). Sartre's almost clinical accounts of his sexual affairs ostensibly were greeted with equanimity by de Beauvoir as long as she retained a primary position as his intellectual partner in their open relationship. As Europe plunged into a maelstrom, his wartime letters from the German border reflect his realization that he had been living inauthentically, and prefigure his existentialist philosophy. First published in 1983 (three years after the French thinker's death) but only now translated into English, this collection is vintage Sartre in its passionate conversations, anecdotal verve, spontaneous outbursts and relentless self-analysis.

Popular in France since its publication as Lettres au Castor et a quelques autres (Gallimard, 1983), this collection offers an accessible and rounded version of the relationship between de Beauvoir and Sartre. The collection includes several letters to others important to both of them, so that Sartre's relationship with de Beauvoir is illuminated by his discussion of her with others. The volume ends before Sartre's imprisonment during World War II, a period when they corresponded heavily, and so it can be hoped than an additional collection may be forthcoming. De Beauvoir's notes are amplified by the translators to clarify relationships and settings. Students of either thinker and of 20th-century culture need to read this.

Only three months after Simone de Beauvoir's Letters to Sartre appeared in English, we now have a fine translation of the other side of this rightfully legendary correspondence. These letters were edited by the elderly Beauvoir and published in France in 1983. They offer an intimate side of Sartre as he reports on his life and thought to Beauvoir during their first 13 passionate years. And sharpening the picture of their relationship are a number of letters to other women. In 1929, then- student Sartre writes to Simone Jolivet that he has the ``ambition to create'' and also an ``enthusiasm'' for certain works that drives him to write. In 22 pages dispatched in 1936 from Naples, the tourist Sartre encircles the reader in that decaying city of ``epidemics and fascism,'' where ``chance is master.'' The incendiary intensity of the Sartre/Beauvoir relationship rises from the almost daily love letters of 1939, when to Beauvoir (mostly in Paris) Sartre writes from a meteorological unit in Alsace about the ``phantom war.'' He hears distant gunfire, and Hitler speaking over a neighboring radio. He discusses the war and the moral and philosophical preoccupations he is putting into The Age of Reason and his journals. ``Each consciousness encompasses within itself the infinite to the extent that it transcends itself,'' he writes on Oct. 11, 1939. Love letters to Louise Vedrine (summer 1939) and frank accounts to Beauvoir of his liaisons make the young women in their circle seem like sounding boards for physical and emotional experience. And Sartre is convincing in his claim to Beauvoir that ``everything I think or feel or write is for you....Even my novel and my journal, which other people will eventually see, are first for you, and only through you for others.'' Extraordinary in so many ways, Sartre's 1924-39 letters illuminate his evolving thought and his groundbreaking relationship with Beauvoir--perhaps at its finest in their exchange of written words. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. OK but not great

Poulson-Bryant is a founding editor of VIBE and Fontaine used to be music editor at the SOURCE and the book only covers from the 1970s-1990s as a result. Forget Motown, Stax/Volt, Cab Calloway, The Moonglows...they ain't here.

The format of the book is a series of multiple-choice answers for a possible 1000 perfect "hi-fi Q" score. The book is HEAVILY weighted towards the rap era since the questions break down into 266 possible points for 70s questions, 328 for the 80s and 406 points for the 1990s. If you don't know your hip-hop, you may not do very well. However, the questions are at times a bit TOO easy. They're already multiple choice so you can always "pick C" if you don't know. And some of the questions give it away if you have HALF the information.

Case in point:
A question asking about female R&B groups. I had the answer narrowed down to either TLC or En Vogue and I was leaning toward TLC. The question said "what female R&B QUARTET"...so I could rule out TLC. This book would find the REAL black music geniuses more accurately if they tried to have at least 2 of the answers be very likely correct. i.e. two of the answers are female R&B quartets.

My Hi-Fi Q was 599 overall (74% of the 1970s questions, 60% on 80s and 50% on 90s). As to those saying it's a good way to learn more about R&B, I'd say that's iffy. Since the answers are placed all the way at the end of each section, instead of say at the bottom of each page with explanations and more detail, most people probably won't bother to flip back and forth.

BOTTOM LINE:
Might be a fun diversion for a day or two at a family reunion. But I don't see a whole lot of "re-read" value and I don't think it's a good candidate for boning up on rap/R&B music. You'd probably do better with a NON-trivia book in that case.

This book is the BOMB!

I heard these guys on the radio and saw them on TV talking about this book and they seemed real interesting and knowledgeable about music. The book proves it. It's full of tons of trivia questions about hiphop and r&b, but the best part is the funny and informative lists they have, like Top 5 Posse Records and Top 5 Blue-Eyed Soul records. I don't agree with their choice for the best Duet ("The Closer I Get To You" by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack). I would have picked Donny and Roberta's "I Who Have Nothing". But anyway they got some good choices all over the book. You'll enjoy this book if you love music and you love trivia. It's like a hiphop version of "Jeopardy."
