Swensen, CIO of Yale University and the author of Pioneering Portfolio Management, reveals why the mutual fund industry as a whole does a disservice to the individual investor. Soft money, 12b-1 fees, overtrading, market timing, and other management practices lower performance and virtually guarantee that most mutual fund returns will fall short of their benchmark, such as the S&P 500. Furthermore, for-profit mutual fund companies have a fiduciary obligation to their stockholders, not to their investors, and this relationship "inevitably resolves in favor of the bottom line." Swensen is also highly critical of the Morningstar rating system, which only causes investors to chase hot performing funds and managers. Assets Not for Asset Allocation

I was fairly impressed with this book. I would give it an A, but the style of writing was painful to read, so I give it a B.

I recently saw several articles about Harvard's endowment manager leaving Harvard to set up his own firm. I was amazed to see how diversified the Harvard fund was in that it included not just stocks and bonds, but many other asset classes:

U.S. equities 15%

Private Equity 13
Hedge Funds 12
U.S. Bonds 11
Foreign Equities 10
Real Estate 10
Inflation-Indexed Bonds 6
Emerging Markets 5
High-Yield 5
Foreign Bonds 5

This info came from 12/27/04 Business Week article. The same article said Harvard's endowment fund grew from $4.7B in 1990 to $22.6B in 2005. This sounds impressive until you calculate the compounded return, which is 11.04%. Simply investing in an S&P 500 index fund over the same time period would have given roughly a 10.91% compounded rate of return.

Swensen seems to have followed a similar very diversified approach at Yale.

I really enjoyed the explanation of why certain asset classes should not be included in investor's portfolios.....specifically foreign bonds.

Since I am an avid Index Fund investor, Swensen was preaching to the choir with regards to blasting the "for profit" mutual fund companies. Being a Vanguard investor, I was disappointed to see Vanguard take one hit for following one type of unsavory practice. Compared to the "for profit" mutual fund companies, Vanguard is a shining angel.

The successes of Harvard's and Yale's endowment fund investments are spreading the gospel of the advantages of asset allocation. Gary Brinson's 1986 famous study can be defined as the birth of asset allocation. He found that over 90% of a portfolio's return can be determined by the asset classes used, not what the individual investments were. Brinson's findings have been relatively slow to flow through the investment community and to individual investors. Dial the time clock ahead from 1986 to 2006, and one of Business Week's cover stories seeks to explain why the S&P 500's profits have increased dramatically over the last 5 years, yet the S&P 500 companies have had very little stock price appreciation. One explanation offered is that more and more investors practice asset allocation and choose other investments besides the S&P 500 for their portfolios. The increased demand for other asset classes like foreign stocks, commodities, and gold has subsequently less to a decrease in demand for large cap stocks in the S&P 500.

This book contains excellent information and guidelines for serious investors. It is very dry and boring to read.

All-in-all, a good book for serious investors. I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, and the Coffeehouse Investor.

An In-Depth Look for the More-Interested Investor

While this is an excellent book, I knocked off a star for one main reason: I believe it to be a little too advanced to be called "fundamental."

This is the perfect book for a person with two critical attributes:

1) You have already read Burton Malkiel's "A Random Walk Down Wall Street"
2) You are looking to go beyond a employer-sponsored defined contribution plan and would like some help determining who gets your money.

I say read Malkiel first because having an understanding of the Efficient Market Hypothesis will help you get a lot more out of reading this book. While Swensen presents an excellent work, it is a bit dry and academic. If, however, you can commit to reading it carefully, I am confident you will be a better money manager for it.

Since an individual employee has little control over the firm chosen to administer the company 401(k), I believe this book to be less helpful than "A Random Walk" if you are simply seeking guidance for selecting investments in a defined plan. If, however, you are about to open your own IRA or a standard, taxable account, this book will serve as an invaluable guide.

Stick with it, and happy investing!

Miss-titled Must Read

This book is miss-titled. The first third of the book gives some basics concerning portfolio construction and tells the average investor he has no business trading individual stocks.

The balance of the book deals with how average investors get hosed. That being said, this book is a must read if you want to know how "Full Service" brokers and the majority of mutual fund mangers pillage the small investor's accounts.

Buried in the book are 3 recommended mutual fund managers. The book also indicates that majority of ETF's are on their way to being as bad as the average mutual fund. In addition, early in the book, Swensen pretty much tells the average investor that he has no business trading individual stocks.

What the book does not do is provide a basis for "Unconventional Success." In this regard, the book is disappointing. But then, who would have bought and read it if it had been titled "There is no way you can win"?

U.K. journalist Ronson offers a look into the world of political, cultural and religious "extremists" who dwell at the edges of popular culture and the conspiracy theorists who love them. His only criteria for groups' inclusion as extremists is "that they have been called extremists by others," which may explain why the Anti-Defamation League is profiled along with the modern-day KKK, radical Northern Ireland Protestant spokesperson Dr. Ian Paisley and a former BBC sportscaster who believes the world is ruled by a race of alien lizards. The best as well as most timely and unsettling of these essays follows Omar Bakri Mohammed, a radical Islamic militant, on his often bumbling effort to organize British Muslims into a jihad. (Bakri was arrested after September 11.) Ronson's journalism is motivated less out of a duty to inform the public than a desire to satisfy his own curiosity. At the heart of the book is Ronson's quest to find the Bilderberg Group, a secret cabal said to meet once a year to set the agenda of the "New World Order." Fortunately for the reader, his efforts lead somewhere: an informant tracks Bilderberg to a golf resort in Portugal; later, a prominent British politician and Bilderberg founder discusses it on the record. British journalist and filmmaker Ronson spent the last five years with extremists: religious fundamentalists in Great Britain, Texas, and Cameroon; white supremacists in Arkansas, Michigan, and Idaho; and New World Order conspiracy chasers in Portugal and California. Despite their differences, all seem to believe that the world is controlled by an elite group known as "them." Although one may not find, say, the Ku Klux Klan funny on the surface, Ronson, well known for his "Human Zoo" column in the Guardian, makes each essay engaging by pointing out the irony of it all and accentuating the characters' foibles. He also presents their humanity the same humanity they would deny to others. Yet between the lines of satire, the extremists are unmasked for what they really are. They come off, above all, as mundane. This book was accompanied in Britain by a five-part TV documentary, The Secret Rulers of the World. Recommended for all academic and public libraries. Are THEY really as extreme as you think?

Jon Ronson spent a couple years looking for, interviewing and hanging out with people who are viewed by the mainstream as "wackos" or extremists. This book is the result of those years and it is one of the most entertaining and informative books I've read in years.
The subject of the first chapter is Omar Bakri Mohammed, the so-called leader or Islamic Fundamentalists in Britain. After reading the chapter though, you get the feeling that Omar is all talk. He uses Jon for rides and makes him pay for things because he is broke and does not own a car. Conversations between Jon and Omar also prove that Omar isn't nearly as bad as he wants to be.
Later chapters cover Ruby Ridge, the David Koresh incident in Waco, David Icke vs. the ADL and people who believe that a small group of men rule the world (Bilderberg Group.)
Through every chapter, Jon manages to fit in and is able to interview his subjects in a very relaxed manner, thereby allowing them to speak freely with him.
-- The Klu Klux Klan leader who won't allow his Klansmen to use the "N" word.
-- David Icke, who believes that we are descendents of 12 foot tall aliens who now control us through select leaders.
-- A writer for a conspiracy magazine who thinks everyone is following them or hiding something from them.
-- Rachel Weaver, daughter of Randy Weaver (Ruby Ridge), who in great detail tells Jon the story from her point of view. (A sad story, no matter what side you may take)
There are so chapters that don't quite fit in with the rest, but they are interesting anyway. In between laughs, you'll be discover that most extremists are not that different from me or you, they just took it further.

Insightful look at political and religious extremes

It's rare to come across a book that's original, genuinely important - and very funny too. But Them, a series of interconnected essays by one of the UK's most important alternative journalists, is all these things, and it succeeds not merely because of its unexpected timeliness (Ronson's profile of Omar Bakhri Mohammed, Britain's very own Bin Laden, was actually written four years ago) but because the author, unlike other humorous journalists, gets out and does some first-hand investigation. In Bakhri's case, this extended to engaging in a (beautifully-observed) year long association with the extremist that saw Ronson - a self-proclaimed liberal Jew of no strong religious or political convictions - become the would-be revolutionary's unpaid chauffeur and make frequent visits to his home. The strikingly off-key relationship that developed between the two is tellingly portrayed in deftly-paced vignettes:

'Next morning I sat in Omar's living room while Omar played with his baby daughter.

'"What's your daughter's name?" I asked him.

'"It is a difficult name for you to understand," said Omar.

'"Does it have an English translation?" I asked.

'"Yes," said Omar, "it translates into English as 'The Black Flag of Islam'."

'"Really?" I said. "Your daughter's name is The Black Flag of Islam?"

'"Yes," said Omar.

'"Really?" I said.

'There was a small pause.

'"You see," said Omar, "why our cultures can never integrate?"''

Ronson, indeed, succeeds remarkably well in humanising the men (and they are, with only one exception, men) he writes about, and his book, though undoubtedly hilarious, is never played principally for laughs. Instead, its humour emerges from character and situation, and it is all the more effective for it.

Ronson casts his net wide, visiting not only the US (setting for half the chapters in the book), but West Africa, Eastern Europe, Canada and Portugal too. His subjects include KKK leader Thom Robb, notorious new-age extremist David Icke (who believes that Queen Elizabeth is really a creature not dissimilar to one of the villains in 80s teleseries 'V' ), Gail Gans of New York's Anti Defamation League, and right-wing talk show host Alex Jones. Nor was his quest without danger - he finds himself tailed by sinister secret service men in the Algarve and - most spectacularly - unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp. All in all, therefore, Them turns out to be an eye opening and admirable introduction to the wilder shores of contemporary belief.

There are flaws - some of the chapters fit better into the developing narrative than others (Ronson's portraits of Ian Paisley and Mr Ru Ru, an enigmatic Saudi Arabian encountered bidding at auction for Nicolai Ceaucescu's shoes, both seem out of place), and there are few laughs to be had in 'Running Through Cornfields', a compassionate profile of Rachel Weaver, one of the survivors of the siege of Ruby Ridge (an event that remains all but unknown in the UK, but which turns out to be pivotal to the development of the principal themes of this book). Most significantly, perhaps, Ronson's decision to place the strange story of the Bilderburg group front and centre in his narrative jars somewhat; by insisting that all the people he enountered share a common belief in the idea that this cabal of Western politicians secretly controls the world, the author surely suggests that the world's extremists share more, in terms of common ideology, than they really do. (The emphasis placed on Bilderburg, in fact, has more to do with the fundamental requirements of the book's narrative than it does with many extremists true ideologies.)

But these are minor quibbles when set against the reach, ambition and insight on offer in this book. Four stars for the content, and an extra one for the sheer vivacity of the writing on display.

Meeting the Masters of the World

With an open mind and some charming naivete, Ronson went on an expedition to find not only those who obsess about the secret masters of the world but, just maybe, the masters themselves.

Like others who have actually done honest fieldwork amongst these political exotica, Ronson meets a lot of kind, polite, and charming people -- as long as you happen to be the right race or creed. Many are reasonable and tolerant too -- at least when they don't have any power to realize their visions.

From the vast zoo of modern conspiracy theory, Ronson mostly concentrates on the ZOG/Bilderberg/Trilateralist/Satanist clade which is usually associated with the right wing. But his years of research turn up some surprises.

In pre-September 11th London, Ronson hangs out with Omar Bakri, self-described as Osama bin Laden's man in London. In America, we meet Thom Robb, Grand Wizard of some Klan sect in a world rife with internecine sniping, egomaniacs, and FBI informers. His claim to fame? He wants his disciples to follow his self-help program -- oh, and stop using the "N-word". With Jim Tucker, reporter for the notorious and defunct _Spotlight_ newspaper, he attempts to infiltrate the annual meeting of the legendary Bilderberg Group. Then there's ex-British sportscaster David Icke who insists that, when he talks about a conspiracy of world ruling reptilian space alien Illuminati, he really means space aliens and not Jews.

And Ronson doesn't find extremism just among the conspiracy mongerers. The infamous actions of the U.S. government at Ruby Ridge are recounted as well as the press' general inability to see a distinction important to the Weavers and their supporters -- racial separatism as opposed to racial supremacy. The Anti-Defamation League comes across as far too ready to see anti-Semitism and pass its faulty judgements to a gullible media. Canadian activists try to stop Icke from public speaking -- all in the name of racial tolerance. And when Ronson actually interviews a founding member, Denis Healey, of the Bilderbergs on their history and activities, suspicions are not entirely allayed.

Ronson makes few outright comments and judgements on his subjects, provides no grand summing up of his findings and that may be the book's biggest flaw. The closest he gets is the concluding statement that nobody really controls anything. The book is more reportage than analysis. But that reporting is done with a sharp eye for the humorous and sinister. Bakri tells of what a future Islamic London will be like -- and is chided at a meeting of fellow jihadists about his inept fishing. Who is the man following Tucker and Ronson in Portugal during the Bilderberg meeting? Hollywood, a claimed nexus of the Grand Jewish Conspiracy, comes off as petty, apolitical, and a place of insincere boutique faith as Ronson follows Tony Kaye, director of American History X, around. Klansmen argue the merits of silk or cotton robes. Ronson infiltrates the Bohemian Grove -- attended by U. S. presidents and vice-presidents -- and finds a rather silly, decades old frat boy ritual that just doesn't have the same drawing power it used to among the up-and-coming junior world ruler set. And more than once, Ronson, a Jew, finds himself guiltily associating with anti-Semites.

To be sure, some of the books chapters seem extraneous. An auction of Nicolae Ceausescu's relics adds nothing. Neither does a chapter on Ian Paisley taken from an early newspaper article.

Ronson's book reminded me of Phillip Finch's God Guts And Guns which went among the American radical right and the works of Laird Wilcox about American political extremists. Its humor and willingness to consider outre theories like David Icke's reminded me of Alex Heard's Apocalypse Pretty Soon: Travels In End-Time America, the work of Ronson's fellow Englishman Louis Theroux, and the pages of _The Fortean Times_.

Anybody interested in strange beliefs, conspiracy theories, or political extremism should read this book.

He is there to witness every stage of development, from the purchase of a large tract of land in rural Pennsylvania through meetings with local community leaders to get planning approval, to the moment when a family moves into one of the first completed units. The account is forthright about the difficulties New Daleville's creators face in making the project work, but Rybczynski (A Clearing in the Distance, etc.) remains optimistic that "the small lots [and] narrow streets... will all make sense" in the future. Occasionally, he provides historical and cultural perspective in a style reminiscent of Malcolm Gladwell, debunking the myth of urban sprawl and explaining American homeowners' preference for single-family dwellings. But Rybczynski also excels at the "close-up," John McPhee's method of reporting, where every interview reads like an intimate conversation, and a simple walk down neighborhood sidewalks can reveal a wealth of history. Residential real estate development seems like an unlikely topic for a gripping read, and certainly Rybczynski can't be said to have produced a page-turner. But the author of The Perfect House (2002), among other books, and an architecture critic, most recently for Slate, brings considerable stores of knowledge, curiosity, and writing skill to this readable and at times even suspenseful book about a developer's process of building an exurban subdivision in rural Pennsylvania. In a style that is both digressive (he reviews land development patterns as far back as George Washington's day) and leisurely (including long quotes from sources in the manner of Tracy Kidder), Rybczynski follows the project through its conceptual stages, the politically tricky zoning permits process, and community approvals, to, finally, its finished state as a neotraditional "village" community. Along the way, we learn how land gets developed in the era of the new urbanism and pro- and anti-growth debates, and why so many Americans choose to live in suburbs (as opposed to denser city centers) despite often lengthy commutes. The dirt on suburbs, exurbs, zoning, and land development

"The last harvest" refers to farmers who sell, and jealously covet their right to sell, portions of their farms to developers for housing developments. In his book Rybczynski, as the book's long subtitle makes clear, gives the reader a behind-the-scenes look at how one such tract of land became a neo-traditional rural development, New Daleville, Pennsylvania. Rybczynski writes in a level-headed style without any sense of alarm. There is no good guys/bad guys polarity here, just a lot of people trying to make a living (or find a decent and affordable place to live) in unpredictable economic situations without sacrificing the things they value most in community. If Rybczynski has a point of view other than that of an intelligent, informed social observer who has been writing about architecture and urban development for decades, he keeps it well in check. For readers looking for ammunition, this may be a disappointing read.

Many players are introduced--local farmers looking to sell their land, land developers, zoning boards, building contractors, banking and public officials, sanitation specialists, nearby residents, and potential buyers--but no personal profile dominates the story. They merely come in and out of view like passers-by on the much coveted sidewalks of the "village core" in one of the neotraditional garden exurbs Rybczynski describes. This superficiality made the book a little less interesting to me than his earlier books, like CITY LIFE and WAITING FOR THE WEEKEND, in which extensive historical background were provided, and left me craving more data. This kind of information is in the book (like a four page digression into the post-WWII Levittown phenomenon), it's just not as plentiful as this reader wanted. What the book did do for me, however, was to make me a little less judgmental about new subdivisions I see popping up along the interstates in what seem like strange locations and more compassionate towards the vast range of people who have to come to consensus before even the first spadeful of dirt can be turned. That anything ever gets built and that some of it is even decent looking is indeed a testament to human will and the long-standing American love affair with the single family house.

An impressive piece of work

An impressive piece of work, which I read at two sittings. The review you want to read is Penelope Green's, at the New York Times -- I'll put the link in a comment, as Amazon won't allow outside links in their reviews.

Rybczynski writes a very nice portrait of the contemporary subdivision planning and building process, with the focus on a particular exurb near his home in Philadelphia. In the process, you'll learn a lot about the history of suburban living in America -- and perhaps unlearn some persistent misinformation from urban intellectuals who don't like the suburbs. Highly recommended.

good journalism, so-so social science

When this book focuses on the story of one development in Chester County (a suburb of Philadelphia), it is quite good. It is a breezy, easy-to-read story of how one developer views the zoning process.

Some of the things I got from this book:

*Chester County's suburbanites want to limit development as much as possible. As the author notes, "New houses mean extra cars, extra traffic at rush hour, more kids in the schools, and in the long run, higher taxes."

*As a result, Chester County's zoning board tends to favor low density development; the size of an average lot in Chester County increased from half an acre in the 1960s to an acre and a half in the 1990s.

*One reason housing prices are so high is that developers have to bribe local residents to get new development approved. For example, the developer profiled in this book had to buy neighbors' support by giving away 12,500 square feet of open space.

*In Chester County, the price of land has become a greater percentage than ever of housing prices, due to (according to the developer profiled in this book) zoning-induced scarcity. In 1976, the cost of a lot represented only 15% of a Chester County house's selling price- today, the cost of land represents 30% of the sale price.

*Contrary to conventional wisdom among property rights types, homeowners' associations and the restrictive covenants they enforce are not a result of free choice among consumers. According to the developer of New Daleville, "all our projects include community associations. The local municipal governments insist on it" so that the associations (rather than municipalities) will be responsible for the costs of street maintenance.

On the other hand, the book's attempts to describe broader social trends outside Chester County are occasionally simplistic. For example, the book repeats the common chestnut that the East and West Coasts are more anti-development than the rest of the country - but doesn't supply any real evidence for this assertion.

Similarly, the book's general discussion of sprawl is a bit confused. On the one hand, it claims that there is "no significant relationship betweeen sprawl and urban decline" - but on the other, it correctly points out that "there is no widely agreed-upon definition of sprawl". But if we don't know what sprawl is, how can we know what its results are?

She just didn't expect this one to result in her being attacked by a wild-eyed stranger, then left unconscious as a brushfire consumes the Doubleday estate--and almost her, in the bargain.

Now, under suspicion for both arson and the reclusive actress's murder, Nina can only hope to prove someone else guilty of these crimes. Perhaps the guy who assaulted her, or the George Clooney-lookalike she spotted at Doubleday's place right before the blaze, or the late star's obsequious chauffeur, who may know more about his employer's assets than her accountant did. Not above reproach, either, is Doubleday's principal heir, a previously luckless niece who isn't as immune to avarice as Nina had supposed. With her black dye job and nose stud, and a chip on her shoulder the size of Duluth--the result of an abusive childhood and her misadventures in two previous novels, Shooting Elvis and Killing Paparazzi--Nina Zero isn't the warmest or most well-adjusted fictional protagonist around. ("I'm running from a lot of things," she tells her parole officer. "But I'm not fast enough. Things are catching up.") Yet she's persistent, and with some help from a toothless Rottweiler, a resourceful tabloid reporter, and an unconventional father figure in the form of a retired cop, she just might figure out who did in the "miserable" Doubleday (if she's dead at all), without winding up either back in the slammer or crushed inside a tumbling trailer home.

Less sharp-edged than Killing Paparazzi, Burning Garbo is as much a cleverly constructed mystery as it is a continuation of Nina Zero's search for self-identity. Although the case here is solved with somewhat dubious brilliance, and an extended foray into L.A.'s jail system distracts from the plot's arc, Nina's brassy irreverence and Eversz's taste for savaging the more eccentric elements of Southern California culture make a combustible storytelling combination. --J. With plenty of celebrity satire and an ending that confounds expectations, this is a rollicking ride.

A guard shoots the paparazza right in the camera lens, a wildfire erupts, engulfing the celebrity's home, and possibly the celebrity, with it. This is about as noir a start as you can get in a burned-out L.A. novel. And Eversz keeps delivering deft noir touches and explosive action throughout this latest entry in the tough-girl Nina Zero series. Nina, just sprung from prison on a manslaughter conviction, becomes the focus of the investigation and the object of a gut-wrenching frame-up, thanks to her con status and the fact that she was covering the fire. Eversz brings us into fairly traditional L.A. private-eye land when the movie star's niece hires Zero to investigative the possible murder. This series gets its guts from the hard-up but resilient Nina Zero. Connie Fletcher

He's gonna have to be careful with #4 in the series . . .

Nina Zero, on parole after imprisonment for a (justified) manslaughter -- for the details of which you need to read the previous two novels -- is trying hard to stay straight and make a living as a paparazza for a Los Angeles tabloid, but by now there's virtually none of the original good-girl Mary Alice Baker left. Deep down, she's a good person, but she's also quite capable of dealing with the county slammer when she gets picked up "on suspicion" (which happens to parolees on a regular basis). The first novel, _Shooting Elvis,_ was very, very good as a character study; the second one, _Killing Paparazzi,_ was okay but more of a straight detective story. This third installment sports the brand label "A Nino Zero Novel" on the front cover, which is not a good sign. The plot revolves around the death by arson of a reclusive movie star in the Malibu hills, which the cops like Nina for, since she was conveniently present. The deceased actress's estranged neice and sort-of stepfather (himself a crusty retired cop who takes a shine to Nina) want to find out whodunit and Nina, with the help of her equally crusty editor boss, needs to clear herself in order to stay on the outside. The action is complicated by additional deaths, but the real interest here is in the way Eversz draws his characters -- not only Nina but all the supporting cast. I had my doubts before whether this could survive as a series, and I still have them, but Nina is a fascinating portrait and I'll keep reading.

Great storytelling

Paparazzi Nina Zero needs a break to change her finances that live up to her name. She decides to make one for herself by photographing the Hollywood legendary recluse, Angela Doubleday. A picture of Angela goes for about $50K and Nina plans to obtain that cash.
Nina heads to the Malibu Hills and climbs a barrier to gain entrance to the Doubleday estate. Almost immediately, a man assaults her knocking her out and destroying her camera. When she regains consciousness, Nina sees that the Doubleday house is on fire and the cops and an arson investigator want to question her as the torch suspect. Nina flees the scene anyway knowing that her parole (see manslaughter in KILLING PAPARAZZI) is shaky and only she has reason to prove her innocence. When a burned to the crisp humans remains are found, Nina knows that she better leave no doubt to her innocence with her only ally Dog the toothless Rottweiler.
The third Zero novel is an exciting Hollywood tale that crime thriller fans will enjoy though not as out of the box as Nina's previous excellent adventures. The story line is fast-paced and loaded with action as Nina watches her world spin out of control, but refuses to idly wait for the big crunch. Nina remains a strong protagonist, but her fans anticipating the unexpected will find BURNING GARBO a well written sleuthing 101 tale.

This is Eversz' third book in the "noir punk" Nina Zero series. The hero, Nina, is a sardonic, violent loser who has a serious problem with authority or any type of oppression. That's why she is so likeable. She goes too far in resisting attempts by bad guys to dominate, but she always has justification.

Nina always seems to stumble onto nasty conspiracies and corruption, which she investigates with tenacity. Her range of emotions is limited, blunted by her years in prison and betrayal by her family and friends. Still she is able to demonstrate loyalty to her dog which somehow buys her some points with her parole officer.

This is a quick read which may spoil you for more conventional detective mystery characters. I suggest starting from the beginning to see the development of this character's major "chip on the shoulder".

In the world of golf, the name Jack Nicklaus speaks for itself. While the world follows Tiger Woods, Tiger is chasing Jack's records, most notably his 20 major championships. Nicklaus and Bowden have teamed to produce a number of golf books, with Golf My Way perhaps the most noteworthy. Their latest had its genesis in a series of tips that ran in Golf magazine between 1988 and 2001. When the tips were first written, they followed no particular order. In this collection, they are grouped into themes like fundamentals, power, and putting. What makes these tips interesting is that they are written by an accomplished and still competitive aging golfer. This is in contrast to, say, the tips of the latest winner of a major tournament. While there is a place for both, golf is a lifetime sport, and there is a dearth of meaningful material available for the golfer of a certain age. Almost every tip is accompanied by a detailed illustration that drives the point home. A good purchase for public libraries, particularly ones with large sport collections.

About the Author
Jack Nicklaus was born in 1940 in Columbus, Ohio, and maintains a home there and in Florida. Widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time, he has achieved a record twenty major championship victories, consisting of two U.S. Amateurs, six Masters (also a record), four U.S. Opens, three British Opens, and five PGA Championships. The winner of more than 100 professional tournaments around the world, Nicklaus was named Golfer of the Century in 1988.

Ken Bowden was the editorial director of both Europe's and America's premier golf magazines, and has collaborated with Nicklaus on eleven books. Since first watching Nicklaus compete in 1959, Bowden has witnessed a great many of Jack's achievements first-hand.

Cliff Notes for Golf

Anyone who has seen the one page tips in a golf magazine will recognize the essence of this book. It doesn't go into depth, instead it will have a sketched image of what you should be doing along with a paragraph or two of explaination.

The tips have been organized into specific areas, setup, grip, and power for example to make it easier to find what you're looking for.

Keep in mind it's not intended to teach, just offer quick tips and advice and as such I pick it up just to flip through it to jog my memory at times. Originally over-priced at $25, I bought it for $7.95 and found it worthwhile at that price as a good reminder of what I should be doing by one of the best who has ever play the game.

Good Read For the Intermediate Or Advanced Player

In my humble opinion, while "My Golden Lessons" is a good read, the book is targeted for more experienced players. I am looking at taking up golf again after taking off several years due to family, work, and other interests and want to read some books for the beginner or less experienced. Saw this book at the local public library and decided to read it.

The book, written by one of the best players ever, contains several colorful illustrations (usually drawings of Nicklaus himself) of how to hit particular shots, stances to use , mental preparation, etc.

However, as stated earlier, I believe the book is better suited to the more experienced golfer. Still, a good read and I will refer to this title more as I play longer.

Recommended.

For 30 years Frank McCourt taught high school English in New York City and for much of that time he considered himself a fraud. During these years he danced a delicate jig between engaging the students, satisfying often bewildered administrators and parents, and actually enjoying his job. He tried to present a consistent image of composure and self-confidence, yet he regularly felt insecure, inadequate, and unfocused. After much trial and error, he eventually discovered what was in front of him (or rather, behind him) all along--his own experience. "My life saved my life," he writes. "My students didn't know there was a man up there escaping a cocoon of Irish history and Catholicism, leaving bits of that cocoon everywhere." At the beginning of his career it had never occurred to him that his own dismal upbringing in the slums of Limerick could be turned into a valuable lesson plan. Indeed, his formal training emphasized the opposite. Principals and department heads lectured him to never share anything personal. He was instructed to arouse fear and awe, to be stern, to be impossible to please--but he couldn't do it. McCourt was too likable, too interested in the students' lives, and too willing to reveal himself for their benefit as well as his own. He was a kindred spirit with more questions than answers: "Look at me: wandering late bloomer, floundering old fart, discovering in my forties what my students knew in their teens."

As he did so adroitly in his previous memoirs, Angela's Ashes and 'Tis, McCourt manages to uncover humor in nearly everything. He writes about hilarious misfires, as when he suggested (during his teacher's exam) that the students write a suicide note, as well as unorthodox assignments that turned into epiphanies for both teacher and students. Starred Review. This final memoir in the trilogy that started with Angela's Ashes and continued in 'Tis focuses almost exclusively on McCourt's 30-year teaching career in New York City's public high schools, which began at McKee Vocational and Technical in 1958. His first day in class, a fight broke out and a sandwich was hurled in anger. McCourt immediately picked it up and ate it. On the second day of class, McCourt's retort about the Irish and their sheep brought the wrath of the principal down on him. All McCourt wanted to do was teach, which wasn't easy in the jumbled bureaucracy of the New York City school system. Pretty soon he realized the system wasn't run by teachers but by sterile functionaries. "I was uncomfortable with the bureaucrats, the higher-ups, who had escaped classrooms only to turn and bother the occupants of those classrooms, teachers and students. I never wanted to fill out their forms, follow their guidelines, administer their examinations, tolerate their snooping, adjust myself to their programs and courses of study." As McCourt matured in his job, he found ingenious ways to motivate the kids: have them write "excuse notes" from Adam and Eve to God; use parts of a pen to define parts of a sentence; use cookbook recipes to get the students to think creatively. A particularly warming and enlightening lesson concerns a class of black girls at Seward Park High School who felt slighted when they were not invited to see a performance of Hamlet, and how they taught McCourt never to have diminished expectations about any of his students. McCourt throws down the gauntlet on education, asserting that teaching is more than achieving high test scores. It's about educating, about forming intellects, about getting people to think. McCourt's many fans will of course love this book, but it also should be mandatory reading for every teacher in America. And it wouldn't hurt some politicians to read it, too. (Nov. 15)

The pathos McCourt created in his first two memoirs just may be wearing thin. While some critics thought Teacher Man focused, fresh, and exciting, others saw a self-deprecating author at work, his prose littered with clichés. No doubt Teacher Man is darkly entertaining: what other teacher during class would ask children to write suicide notes or describe their own murderous thoughts? But too many anecdotes about McCourt’s childhood, sexual adventures, and marriage (all found in his previous books) often disembody his poignant, life-learning teaching experiences from their context. Still, the memoir rings true for teachers in its depictions of daily classroom trials, and McCourt’s honesty and storytelling gifts remain unsurpassed.

Brief, frank, to the point and telling. I was a bit put off by the scene changes but the author's ability to tell the reader how he felt when he goofed up was heart warming. Too few people admit their weak points and tell others about them. A good book with an interesting writing technique and a story worth reading.

"Teacher Man"=Teacher Wow!

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than "Angela's Ashes", along came "'Tis". Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than "'Tis", along came "Teacher Man".

In "Teacher Man", McCourt is no longer haunted by the images of his dismal childhood in Limerick. His vision is no longer obscured by all those "dark clouds" that were ever a part of his being in the other memoirs as he endeavored to find his niche.

In "Teacher Man" he is totally immersed in the sometimes chaotic, sometimes enchanting, sometimes frustrating but always challenging world of a classroom filled with that most curious of creatures: the adolescent.

In that world, he not only finds his voice, he finds his heart, he finds his soul,he finds his passion. And that, has made all the difference.

"Teacher Man" is a book that will surely resonate with anyone,who,like "moi", has ever experienced life as a high school teacher. But what of those who have never embraced the profession? To that I would respond that "Teacher Man" will also resonate with anyone who has ever been a high school student. And weren't we all?
