A sweet tribute

I was so sad when Kevyn Aucoin died, because his looks were amazing. He really was an artist, and just did such creative things with makeup. This book is a bit of a biography, and a tribute to his work. You get a bit of a timeline through the chapters of his years in Louisiana, then heading to New York and getting more and more prestigious gigs. And you get sweet tributes from the many whose lives he touched, especially a lot of famous women - Tina Turner, Gwyneth Paltrow, etc - who he worked with. There are some tips included, but the best ones are in his other books, Making Faces, and Face Forward. But this is still good, because you get to see a lot more of his work, and I didn't realize that he took so many photos: He was really an amazing photographer, and his drawings (a lot of Barbra Streisand and others) show he was a great artist with pen, paper, pencil, glue, ink, you-name-it.

Inspiring

I thought this book would be more of a "how to" book more than a biography, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and am more inspired than ever to take my makeup artistry to the next level. It is easy to read and very interesting. No matter who you are or what your goals are, this book is proof that EVERYONE has obstacles to overcome. There is a small portion of the book dedicated to "how-to" in the back and I read the book cover to cover. I think I will still get some other beauty how-to books, but I was not disappointed in this at all even though it did not turn out to be what I originally thought.

Beautifully written book

Beautifully written book! the insights and comments made by his sister and other celebrities are truly heartfelt and touching. Highly recommend the book whether you are a tried and true MUA or just starting around and playing with makeup. I read the entire book on the day that I received it, as I wasn't able to put it down!

After years of planting Victory gardens, volunteering at USOs and coping with increased home front responsibilities, in early 1945 Yellin's mother quit her desk job at Reader's Digest and shipped out to the Pacific Front to join the Red Cross. Wartime manpower shortages were bending gender rules, and many women seized the opportunity to try something different. While feminist historians have analyzed the meaning of their war experience, ?ournalist Yellin takes a more subjective approach. This nonjudgmental, anecdotal account covers the usual range of topics—women in war industries, in volunteer work, in the armed forces, in undercover operations—but Yellin avoids retelling the familiar. Thus, she discusses the experiences of Lena Horne and Julia Child more fully than those of Eleanor Roosevelt, and delves deeper into the anti-Semitic Mothers' Movement and Hawaiian prostitutes walking picket lines than more mainstream organizations like the CIO women's committees. Yellin describes the exclusion of African-American women from most military units and the internment of Japanese-American women, but adds little to present scholarship on minority women's participation. Indeed, since her most original material comes from interviews with relatives, family friends and contacts, the book is strongest on the experiences of educated white women, which were surprisingly diverse. For WAVES director Mildred McAfee—the president of Wellesley College before the war—life in the navy took her out of her "cloister" and thrust her into a world where "women are women and men are men." For others, like Yellin's mother, the war let their genies out of the bottle.

Adult/High School–An exceptionally well-written, exhaustively researched book. During World War II, females were confined to auxiliary roles. Yellin reveals all of the responsibilities held by women, including helping to manufacture aircraft, ships, and other munitions; and, in the process, outproducing all of America's allies and enemies, by far. Readers see war brides who worked hard to maintain the morale of their husbands while surviving long separation, fear, and shortages of virtually everything necessary to support a family. Yellin writes about performers like Betty Grable, who traveled to combat theaters to raise the spirits of soldiers, sailors, and airmen. They deserve more credit than they have gotten.

A great read!
This book is full of surprising, well-told stories of heroic, courageous, and fascinating women. Not just another history of the "supporting roles" of women during the war. This book goes far beyond the stock portrayals of WWII women to take you into their private thoughts and fears. There are pilots, war photographers, disc jockeys, spies, soldiers, members of congress -- so many women who stepped up and took part in the war, often in spite of great opposition. (And it doesn't shy away from telling about a few women who were not so noble during the war either.)
I had never seen the women of WWII placed in this light -- as equal partners in fighting and winning. This book will make you want to know more about your own mother, your aunts, and your grandmothers. (Hopefully you still have a chance to discuss this book with them!) It should be read by every son, daughter, grandson and granddaughter of the Greatest Generation.

Astonishing

This is a unique compilation of astonishing research and
personal history that takes the crust off our mothers' wartime persona. Even the high profile women of WWII ? Dietrich, Lombard,
Davis, et al ? are illuminated in thoroughly surprising ways. I read slowly and savored each page, and by the end I knew my mother and grandmothers and the human spirit, better. Kudos to Emily Yellin.

Excellent Resource

The voice of women veterans is one too seldom heard. Now, with WWII veterans dying at a rate of over 1,000 per day, those voices will all too soon become silent. WWII was the first time women joined the military, and they encountered prejudice and hardships every step of the way. The women and nurses who served in the military witnessed horrors that many of the men encountered, but with much less preparation and little resource for healing after the war. All but forgotten for the roles they performed, this book brings to light their stories by both the women themselves, as well as the author's research and study. Much of the information is rarely found in available books, and "Our Mothers War" is an excellent resource for that information- particularly on the lesser known women's roles on the homefront, in espionage, and those who were taken as prisoners of war. Women volunteered to help the war effort in every possible way. The accounts tell stories of war as well as stories of the lighter side of day-to-day living that was the human side of life during WWII.

An excellent overall account of women in the 1940's, and one that will likely encourage the reader to delve deeper into our nation's history of female veterans, women's roles and the women's movement.

Holley Bishop loves bees. No, more than that: she idolizes them. She marvels at their native abilities and the momentous role these misunderstood and unjustly feared creatures have played in the development of human history. And with her book, Robbing the Bees, she succeeds in making the reader love bees, too. Take this nifty bit of information, one of countless fascinating factoids offered by Bishop in her celebration of all things bee-related: "Because of bees' starring role in the drama of pollination, we humans are indebted to them, directly and indirectly, for a third of our food supply. Visiting bees are required for the commercial production of more than a hundred of our most important crops including alfalfa, garlic, apples, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, citrus, melons, onion, almonds, turnips, parsley, sunflower, cranberries, and clover." Or how about this: "For the past decade, the American military has been testing [bees'] potential as special agents in the war on drugs and terrorism. Bees are as sensitive to odor as dogs and can be trained to buzz in on drugs, explosives, landmines, and chemical weapons." Beat that as a winning opening gambit at a cocktail party. And that ain't all. Bishop charts the evolution of honey and beeswax harvesting through the ages, gives us an up-close look inside working beehives from ancient Egypt to the present day, interviews beekeepers, quotes bee chroniclers past and present (from Charles Darwin to contemporary Florida beekeeper Donald Smiley), reveals her rather clumsy foray into beekeeping in candid detail, studies bees' impact on religion and history, and provides a selection of innovative recipes calling for honey. Through it all, Bishop never loses sight of the star if the show--the humble honey bee--or the crucial but largely unrewarded role they continue to play on our planet. And she does it with snappy prose and keen humor. Who knew bees could be such a fascinating topic?

Holley Bishop has done an excellent job of researching and writing a book about the history & uses of something that most people take for granted. _Robbing the Bees_ reminds me of Kurlansky's book about salt, and while it's not quite as dense or as long as _Salt: A World History_, it's just as readable and interesting.

Ms. Bishop is very honest about it being a happy coincidence that got her into beekeeping, and not a preplanned move. She clearly enjoys the beekeeping, and between her anecdotes and those of Mr. Smiley, a professional beekeeper in Florida, new beekeepers are given a thorough background in the economics, markets, equipment, pitfalls, and rewards of beekeeping.

She gives quite a bit of detail on the history of beekeeping, including Egyptian & Roman practices, medieval European practices, and some of the relatively recent advances (such as design of the hives, with removable supers) that have made beekeeping what it is today. There is also discussion of uses for beeswax, and how renting of honeybees for pollination has helped improve yields for agricultural crops.

There is also a large amount of scientific information, such as the life cycle of honeybees, how they gather pollen and how they use nectar & pollen in the hive, how they produce wax, and some of the chemical properties of honey.

There is also a recipe section that is quite nice all by itself.

My few quibbles have to do with lack of information. For instance, she states that tupelo honey is sought after because of its taste and because its sugars won't crystallize. But it's not explained WHY tupelo honey won't crystallize, while other honeys will. And what is the difference between honeybees and the larger louder bumblebees that I sometimes see going from flower to flower? And why isn't there a bibliography?

Having been stung a few times as a child, I have been fairly disinterested in bees, except to avoid them. But after reading Holley Bishop's book, I understand they are much more interesting and beneficial than it appears on the surface. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I am not yet ready to get my own beehive -- but if any book ever convinces me to give beekeeping a try, it will probably be _Robbing the Bees_.

A paean to bees, honey, and wax

In ROBBING THE BEES, author Holley Bishop, herself an amateur bee keeper for six years, has penned an eminently readable and loving tribute to bees, honey, and beeswax. While not a thriller, nor perhaps one you can't put down, it is at the top of the genre of books that teaches us a little bit about the world we inhabit, and which focuses on a subject about which the reader likely gives little thought. I mean, honey is on the supermarket shelf in those cute, squeezable, plastic bears. What more is there to know, right?

A relatively small portion of the text - regrettably too little - describes Bishop's own experience raising bees. Rather, she was invited by Florida bee keeper and honey merchant, Donald Smiley, to accompany him on his daily rounds over the course of a year as he moved his apiaries from place to place following the seasonal emergence of the various blossoms that provide the pollen and nectar that nourish the bees' hive and ultimately provide Mankind with one of its most historically significant food staples. Also, we learn that, over the millennia, honey has also served as drink, food preservative, money, and medicine. Thus, the quote from a 1685 Persian medical manual that heads this review.

Bishop doesn't neglect beeswax, which has served to embalm bodies, provide light as candles, waterproof leather armor, polish furniture, floors and walls, mend cracked pottery, cement mosaic tiles, remove stains from marble, and serve as the substrate for lipstick and crayons.

As for the bees themselves, Holly describes their life cycle and hive environment, their amazing ability for comb construction, and their accidental but vital contribution to plant pollination (without which supermarket produce sections wouldn't be the same).

In short, because ROBBING THE BEES is a masterpiece of good press, I'll never look at that busy insect in the same way ever again. Cockroaches should be as lucky.

Excellent MS on a Most Important Subject. Buy It!

`Robbing the Bees, A Biography of Honey (The Sweet Liquid Gold that Seduced the World' by novice beekeeper and first time book author, Holley Bishop is a great little read, with a subject matter very similar to Mark Kurlansky's works, `Cod' and `Salt' but with an engaging style similar to `New Yorker' writer, Susan Orlean, author of `The Orchid Thief'. The fact that the primary subjects in both Orleans' and Bishop's books live and work in Florida is pure coincidence.

Bishop evokes Orleans' style by switching back and forth between three main narrative lines. The opening line chronicles Bishop's own foray into beekeeping at her rural Connecticut home. This thread gives us an excellent firsthand picture of the trials of a real beekeeping novice. In the first chapter, we are introduced to the star of the second and, in many ways, the most important thread. This is Donald Smiley, a successful operator of a modest but growing beekeeping operation in the Florida panhandle who, upon being contacted by Bishop had 600 hives which grew to over a thousand in the three year course of writing this book. Aside from the fact that Smiley was the only professional beekeeper to answer Bishop's letter of inquiry, his operation is interesting because the collecting of the very interesting tupelo honey from blossoms native to the southern U.S. swamps is a major part of Smiley's yearly routine. Tupelo honey is distinguished from almost all others in that its sugars never crystallize out of the liquid honey.

The story of Smiley's yearly routine is one that makes one scratch ones head in wonder over how anyone can like such a demanding schedule. But since thousands of beekeepers, just like professional chefs, commonly put in twelve to sixteen hour days and love every minute of it, one has to believe the psychic rewards to such a life are high. Smiley does have the advantage of being self-employed AND of running a business which give him an income at about twice the average of rural Florida panhandle residents. The hard part only begins with the dangers of dealing with stinging bees that are, at best, disinterested partners in the collection of honey and beeswax. In order to create a true tupelo or orange or clover specific honey, Smiley and his assistants must run through all 600 to 1000 hives and harvest what is in the hives, clean the honeycomb racks of every last trace of the previous honey, replace the honeycomb racks, and move all these hives to locations close to where the target blossoms or flowers are just opening. And, all of this has to be done in two or three days so the bees can catch the blossoms just as they start to open.

The third thread in Bishop's book covers the backstory of honey, bees, and beeswax. I give Bishop serious extra points for remembering to include a chapter on beeswax. While it is a relatively unimportant product today, it is historically exceedingly important. Its surviving use in Moravian candles, for example, just scratches the surface of its uses. If you imagine a world without plastics, rubber, or synthetic hydrocarbons, the importance of wax should become obvious. It was used in waterproofing, preserving, embalming, and beautifying furniture. Bishop doesn't stop with its uses; she also discusses how bees create beeswax and how they use it to build the hexagonal cells of honeycomb. I was particularly interested in the citations of experiments performed by Charles Darwin in revealing how it was that honey bees were able to construct their marvelously geometric structures which just happen to need the least amount of material to contain the greatest volume. The evidence of Darwin's genius never fails to amaze me.

One pitfall which Bishop avoids is a favorite subject of linguistic philosophers back in the 1960's when it was thought that the bees' dance upon returning to the hive was a form of language whereby the bee was telling her colleagues where to find an especially rich source of nectar. This very scholarly topic simply fell to the ground when, I believe, it was discovered that the basis for the dance was to shake loose pollen so that the onlookers could get a sample of the pollen from the rich source of flowers.

Every subject's background is covered with the same excellent selection of material from history and modern science. Most of the illustrations are drawings from the dawn of publishing through the 19th century, the heyday of artistically done drawings of subjects from natural history. The subject of stinging, for example, is covered by anecdotes from the author's own experience and from Smiley's experience plus a brief on how a bee's sting works. Like most things in the natural world, it is a lot more complicated than it appears on the surface. The mechanics of a bee's sting make a modern hypodermic needle look crude. The biochemistry of the bee's venom makes injected medical cocktails look primitive.

If this story has any dark side, it is in the story of the Africanized bees which were introduced into Brazil in the 1950's to create a strain which would do better than European bees in Brazil's tropical climate. The problem arose because these smaller, less productive bees were both more nomadic and more aggressive than their highly productive European cousins. This meant that the Africanized bees have been moving north through the Americas and colonies have already reached the southern United States. Their stings are no worse than European bee stings, but they will go after a human intruder out of sheer aggression, even if the nearby human makes no move to disturb the hive. As there is no known antidote to this moving ecological danger, one wishes we still had Darwin around to provide some clues to solving the problem.

If Bishop's book has any weaknesses at all, it is the absence of a good bibliography and a few minor inaccuracies that got past her copy editors.

One would not anticipate a conventional memoir from Bob Dylan--indeed, one would not have foreseen an autobiography at all from the pen of the notoriously private legend. What Chronicles: Volume 1 delivers is an odd but ultimately illuminating memoir that is as impulsive, eccentric, and inspired as Dylan's greatest music.

Eschewing chronology and skipping over most of the "highlights" that his many biographers have assigned him, Dylan drifts and rambles through his tale, amplifying a series of major and minor epiphanies. If you're interested in a behind-the-scenes look at his encounters with the Beatles, look elsewhere. Dylan describes the sensation of hearing the group's "Do You Want to Know a Secret" on the radio, but devotes far more ink to a Louisiana shopkeeper named Sun Pie, who tells him, "I think all the good in the world might already been done" and sells him a World's Greatest Grandpa bumper sticker. Dylan certainly sticks to his own agenda--a newspaper article about journeymen heavyweights Jerry Quarry and Jimmy Ellis and soul singer Joe Tex's appearance on The Tonight Show inspire heartfelt musings, and yet the 1963 assassination of John Kennedy prompts nary a word from the era's greatest protest singer.

For all the small revelations (it turns out he's been a big fan of Barry Goldwater, Mickey Rourke, and Ice-T), there are eye-opening disclosures, including his confession that a large portion of his recorded output was designed to alienate his audience and free him from the burden of being a "the voice of a generation."

Off the beaten path as it is, Chronicles is nevertheless an astonishing achievement. For legions of die-hard fans and Dylanologists, there is but one voice. And hearing it spoken is rare, mainly during concert band introductions. So the sound of actor Penn taking on Bob Dylan's legendary and oft-cryptic persona is, initially, a surreal aural experience. But after awhile, it becomes clear that the choice was apt. Like Dylan, Penn is a fearless performer, and his own iconoclastic personality serves the narrative without ever threatening to upstage it. One detects a reverent restraint in Penn's voice that conveys the impression that his casual performance is likely as studied as his acclaimed screen work. He adopts a subtle Guthrie-esque workingman's tone, peppering his delivery with plenty of conjunctions. Only when recounting Dylan's youthful arrival in New York City does Penn's preternatural, been-there-done-that tone seem inappropriate. Not surprisingly, Dylan's prose style is lyrical and rambling, the rhythm and cadences jazz-like, and the content prone to Beat influences. But Penn handles these charges with skill. His delivery is even, but his voice dips and rises with welcome emotion when Dylan discusses his unwanted anointment as the conscience of a generation. Overall, this is a solid and compelling audio adaptation.

Enigmatic

Beautifully written. Dylan describes everything carefully and precisely and I get a wonderful feel for the places and the people. I really enjoyed the step into his thoughts, which are as clear and evocative as anything he has written (I am a big, big fan of his music). But as beautiful as it is while I am reading it, as soon as I put it down I forget that I am reading it.

Recommended, Interesting, A Bit "Trippy" at Times

A little obtuse and meandering sometimes but interesting. He is a "trippy" guy as many very intelligent people are. I find reading a chapter and putting it down for a while is necessary to get the most out of it. He had a sojourn to get to where he did like a lot of artists. His persistence and talent eventually won. The reading and observation he did to become successful is profiled in considerable detail. It is definitely a behind-the-scenes personal account. Recommended.

I'm a huge Dylan fan, but found the book lack luster. The book is not well written, or organized. Dylan comes across as very elitist, entitled, and whiney.

When Marcella Hazan, Giuliano Hazan's mother and the woman credited with introducing Americans to authentic Italian cooking, published her first cookbook in 1973, Americans had little access to good olive oil and real Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Times certainly have changed, and this work reflects that in a section on ingredients that calls for items such as bottarga and imported San Marzano tomatoes. But Giuliano's recipes don't differ much from his mother's or those found in the many other general Italian cookbooks, and that's the flaw in this completely competent, utterly unsurprising primer. It's perfect for absolute Italian beginners still looking for recipes for Pasta e Fagioli and Spaghetti with Clams. Hazan, who lives in Florida, works hard to translate Italian dishes for the American marketplace, and he does a particularly good job in his chapter on fish and seafood main courses, suggesting numerous possible species for use in dishes like Red Snapper with Mussels, and Baked Cod with Tomatoes and Red Onions. A chapter on rice includes 15 different risotto recipes, but its most valuable asset is the step-by-step general instructions for making risotto. Such technique sections, especially the one on making pasta by hand, are useful, but just not hefty enough to make this volume indispensable. Photos.

Over the past decade, Americans have grown more sophisticated about Italian cooking. No one any longer bats an eye at pesto, and risotto appears on menus everywhere. Hazan reaches out to this audience with simple Italian recipes that reflect much more than the ordinary array of customary dishes but that can still be produced by cooks with limited experience. His soups, besides the expected bean and pasta classic, include a Sardinian lentil soup with mustard greens. Pasta sauces feature several with fragrant mint, a fairly common Italian potherb, but one not often used in America. Swordfish appears in a simple tomato-based pasta sauce. Although Italians eat veal regularly, reproducing these recipes will be difficult in many American regions where veal is not only rare but also expensive. Braised-beef dishes include one Veronese specialty that calls for six hours of quiet bubbling on the stovetop. An excellent start for cooking Italian

Giuliano Hazan does an excellent job of putting together a variety of Italian dishes. His book contains dishes of both northern and southern Italy. The book starts with a very good primer on how to cut vegetables correctly, what tools you will need, and information about basic ingredients of Italian cooking. I also like that he limits the recipes to ingredients that can be found in your local "Mega Mart".

I found the primer in the begining of the book to be very helpful. Sometimes just knowing how to prepare or cut a particular ingredient can help take away any intimidation you may have with a new ingredient. He has step by step instructions for cutting up artichokes, onions, and so much more. I also like he takes the time to tell you what tools are essential, he isn't one for useless gadgets. The ingredients that you will need, you will find in a local grocery store. Nothing too exotic will be asked for in this book. It is annoying trying to make a recipe and having to forage for some rare ingredient.

The recipes do span both northern and southern Italian cooking. So often in the United States I think we often feel Italian food is just red spaghetti sauce. Northern Italian food is rich, has unique sauces, and if you haven't tried any northern Italian food, you are missing out. His recipes also do a good job of spanning appetizers, meats, rice, pasta, salads, vegetables, and desserts.

I like that the recipes are written clearly, and are easy to follow. He lists out steps, so you can make sure you are on the right track with his recipes. Also the recipes have ingredients that you are familar with. His recipes are written to where they are almost fool proof.

This is a well put together cookbook. I like that ingredients are easy to find. Recipes are written out clearly, and they are easy to understand. He also does a good job of featuring recipes from northern as well as southern Italy. If you are looking for a book to start out our Italian cooking adventures you will be pleased with this book.

I run a hands on cooking school and use Giuliano's newest book, How To Cook Italian, as a foundation for the course. If you want to become an expert on Italian foods, cooking and cooking techniques, and how to make your meals genuninely Italian, you must have this book.

An Authority Worthy of our Trust

In this modern age of information overload, it has become ever more essential to have authorities in different fields whom one can trust. How does one select a title on Italian cooking from the dozens which seem to be published every year? In the realm of authentic Italian cooking, Giuliano is an authority that one can trust.

The son of Marcella and Victor Hazan (acclaimed experts on Italian cooking and wine respectively), Giuliano has shown himself worthy of continuing their legacy with a series of Italian cookbooks (The Classic Pasta Cookbook, Every Night Italian, and now How to Cook Italian). Each book is faithfully dedicated to the true principles of authentic Italian cooking: simplicity, freshness, and flavor. As always with Hazan, the food is the focus. He is not a celebrity chef interested in entertaining his readers, but a cook in the best sense who desires to nourish those he feeds and who use his cookbooks.

The cookbook is wisely laid out in the manner of an Italian meal: appetizers, first courses, second courses, vegetables, salads, and desserts. The cooking is from throughout the varied regions of Italy and, as a result, presents the many different kinds of cooking existing throughout Italy, from the rich and luxorious cooking of Emilia-Romagna in the North to the lively cooking of Italy's Southern regions. Before the recipes is a helpful descriptions of the tools and ingredients one needs to stock a proper Italian kitchen.

The book does have a few faults, however. Although the photography is stunning and beyond improvement, the font and layout of the rest of the book leave something to be desired. There's something overly utilitarian in feel about the book. A more beautifully presented book, such as Marcella Hazan's Marcella Cucina or Mario Batali's Molto Italiano, would have done more justice to the excellent content of the book. I must also admit that I miss the more poetic language of Marcella's books. When reading those, one becomes swept up in the beauty of language as well as food. Perhaps it is unfair to expect from the son what we've come to love in the mother, and perhaps Giuliano's publisher refused such effusiveness. One could only hope in the future for a book which is a little more personal and less textbook like in nature.

Having said this, I in no way mean to lessen the importance or excellence of the book. It fully deserves the five stars I've given it. As a teacher of classic Italian cooking myself, I have become forever indebted to the Hazans for the excellence of their teaching. All of Marcella's and Giuliano's books hold a place of uniqueness in my kitchen, and I would urge anyone interested in Italian cooking to give them a prominent place in theirs as well.

Fly Fishing Meat and Potatoes

I've read almost all of Gierach's books and this is another great collection of fishing stories told in his naturally witty style. He's still fishing with his old friends like A.K. Best. He still writes about his affinity for bamboo rods, carp, grayling, bass ponds, Green Drakes and the good ol' days. He still writes mostly about fishing in Colorado, and the neighboring states around his home. And, his writing always contains a slew of witty Zen philosophy one-liners and this one is no different. What's new in this book is his explanation of his move from his old cabin along the St. Vrain River to his new home three miles away. His old cabin was a pretty common subject in his past books and it was a little sad to hear about it's demise. He also updates the reader about his new work in the local paper the "Redstone Review" which his new girlfriend publishes. If you didn't know any better you would think that the good ol' "Trout Bum" was settling down a little and getting a little sentimental in his later years.
Well, whatever you want to call John Gierach, "trout bum", or "avid fisherman" there is no doubt that he is a fine fisherman. He writes about fly fishing in a no nonsense kind of way. He doesn't sugar coat anything. You get a meat and potatoes image of fly fishing that's wry, funny, sentimental, and informative. As a Midwesterner, I really relate to his blue collar style, which is one of the reasons why Gierach continues to be my favorite fly fishing author. You're more apt to read fishing stories that involve old beat up trucks rather than fancy SUV's. If this is your first Gierach book and you like his style, I suggest you also read "Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders", which is a compilation of his favorite stories from his previous books.

John continues a strong streak

Mr. Gierach has published another fine compilation of his marvelous short stories. The craft of writing is never easy and crafting short stories is far more difficult than blathering on for page after page in a mighty tome.
I could easily read this in an hour or two, but I'm reading these stories one-at-a-time because I want to enjoy each new story in its own space. I guess I'm savoring this book as if it was some fine wine or a great pastry...you simply don't gulp it down.
Thanks again for your fine writing, Mr. Gierach. The art of writing short fly fishing stories is a difficult one to master and Mr. Prosek, Mr. Leeson, Ms. Proulx, Mr. Luce, Mr. Babb, Mr. Proper, Mr. McGuane and Nick and Mari Lyons have all made the grade. I won't try to rank any of these fine contemporary authors (though Mr. Prosek's watercolors and Mari Lyons' illustrations (not all watercolors) add a fine edge to the text in their works).
Mr. McGuane notes on the slipcover that Mr. Gierach out fished him the last time they were on the stream together and that he would have been willing to give Mr. Gierach faint praise (if only to even the score), but Mr. McGuane - an honest fisherman (apologies to Sparse) - correctly rates the quality of this fine work (who would put a bad review on the slipcover, anyway?).
I own all of Mr. Gierach's works and this is one of his best. Literate, humorous, and a nice guide for those of us who are a bit younger . . .we can see how a little more living helps hone an individual's perception of the important things in life.

Observant, wry & well written notes on the fishing life

It is amazing that John Gierach can keep putting out interesting books on essentially the same topic without getting very repetitious. This is another compilation of essays in a long series chronicling his fishing life and the issues that have impact upon it.
His first book, Trout Bum, established his persona...a trout-obsessed fly-fisher who puts everything in life second to the sport. Whether or not this is actually true we don't know, but I suspect that it is pretty much accurate. Unlike most of the bums that I've known(ski bums, golf bums, bass bums) Gierach has managed to make a living from his obsession. I guess that this is a good thing for him...it certainly is good for his readers!

Going strong since 1988, each volume in this excellent series is distinct. This year Collins, America's funniest, slyest, and most diabolically charismatic poet, takes the helm, prompting series editor Lehman to write an unusually frank foreword in which he measures the gap between Collins' great popularity with readers and the venomous criticism of his peers. Collins follows with an introduction in which he asserts that the most "alive and immediate poems . . . combine an acute awareness of tradition with a unique freshness of voice." Given the high-wire acrobatics of his own work, it's no surprise that Collins selected 75 vital and imaginative poems, many evincing "playful irreverence." More Keillor than Kleinzahler. What, is that a problem?

I like this book, an annual publication with this year's selection and introduction by Billy Collins. I doubt that I would select these particular 75 as the "best" of the year if I were the emperor, but these poems are very readable, quite varied, and their subjects are often of considerable human interest, including several that are quite humorous. The sources include such varied publications as The New Yorker, Five Points and New American Writing. You don't need an MFA, an encyclopedia of mythology or a French dictionary to read it. Most lines make sense! Every poem has an expanded note at the back of the book that tells a little about the author and (in most cases) a little about the author's view of the poem. Some people would hate this feature, but I liked it.

My criticism? Almost the same as my praise. The poems are a little too vanilla, a little too PBS/NPR. The selection seems to be aimed at an older, middle-class audience that fancies itself to still have some intellectual sea legs, but doesn't want to get off the cruise ship and mix with the locals (there - I said it). There's not much for the adventurous or those who are looking for challenges, experimentation, unusual verbal/mental stimulation, or points of view beyond 1 standard deviation. Those who are familiar with pop literary criticism will fit this book somewhere into the kleinzahler-keillor spectrum and probably takes sides accordingly. I lean toward the kleinzahler in my preferences, but would definitely put this book in the keillor camp. The poet demographics are largely older white men, though there is a sprinkling of females (several, actually), youth, other nationalities, and people of color. Geezers are capable of some good poetry, and this book gives some examples.

There were several poems that I enjoyed a lot. These include "Race" by Bao Phi, "Religion" by Robert Wrigley, "Briefcase of Sorrow" by Richard Newman, and "The Sharper the Berry" by Mark Pawlak.

Although not my favorite, the most memorable poem for me is "Towards some bright moment" by Stephen Dobyns. The poet describes a scene he witnessed in New York City where a blind woman is kicking and cursing her dog. I believe I witnessed the same scene. At the time and location that he describes in the poem, I also witnessed a blind woman hitting and cursing her dog. And like the poet, I have also thought about that event a lot since then. My conclusions were a little more trivial than his - "Only in New York," I thought. "Why didn't I call PETA," says he, to put both reactions in a very small nutshell. This scene seems like something out an R. Crumb comic, where one person's shock is another person's poem - and then that person's poem can inspire the first person. To activate this scenario, I join the club and write this almost-haiku:

blind woman
kicking her dog
Yeow! a poem's birth hurts.

A little bit of compulsive sociology: as noted above, most of the poets in this collection are relatively old. I made of list of birth years (extracted from those wonderful end notes), and the average age is 52. I believe there were 4 in their 20s, but 18 in their 60s, 3 in their 70s and one octogenarian. Like I said, some of these geezers can write.

Poems Selected for their Modern Beauty

In my mind, poetry books should be a little like a movie, comfortable like your favorite chair and mostly an unforgettable experience. I will agree that most poems are only appealing if they somehow find their way into your psyche and heart in a way that is comforting, shocking, beautiful or even soul revealing.

Each poet is a world unto themselves and each poem is a door into a magical world where you either love or dislike the pathway you have chosen. The beauty of poetry is in how we vary in how we relate to any particular poem.

In "The Best American Poetry 2006," I found so many doorways to new thoughts it was as if this book contained 20 worlds from which to view life and its many moments invisibly charged with crystalline emotions, edgy contemplations, tantalizing twists and taunting mysteries.

I was relieved to read that even Billy Collins was unfamiliar with so many of these modern poets, although I was delighted to have found so many new poets whose work I enjoyed. Being a fan of Billy Collins' poetry seems to have enhanced my reading experience. His humor seems to jump out from various poems in a way that you might find his poems funny.

The surprising elements seem to mirror some of his own poetic genius and his love for scene painting with delicious sentences makes many of these poems comforting escapes into a certain normality infused with the inevitability of surprise and a subtle infusion of emotional complexity. Just as in life, some of the poems have a mind of their own and take off in playful directions, almost guiding the poet's mind in a temptation of language lust.

If you are looking for poems with highly complex structures and obscure words you need to look up in a dictionary, this does not produce such literary excitement, but what it does produce is a variety of emotional responses. These range from outright elation and laughing to deeply profound moods born of a life lived with longing and moments of reflection and regret.

From the fascinating foreword by David Lehman to the contributor's notes and comments, this book is filled with poems, stories of modern poets and journeys through worlds we know and love. We are at times riding on a boat writing a poem that sounds more like a letter (The Ferry), entering a bibliomaniac's world where a book is more appealing than the sight of a woman (Refusal to Notice Beautiful Women) and returning to past moments of great romantic significance as in the poem by Beth Ann Fennelly.

In Sarah Gorham's poem she speaks of two different ideas, but they merge and a beautiful image of souls falling like stars descends on your imagination. A poem about a Mermaid brings a sweet playfulness to the book and one poem takes you on a jaunty ride into rhythmic pleasure. There are a few poems with shocking conclusions that are quite funny and others that left me wondering how the poet was able to survive emotionally all these years to write about such disaster of the heart. My heart was captured by the poems of Kim Addonizio, Debora Greger, Mary Oliver, Mary Jo Salter, Terence Winch, Alison Townsend (she had me in tears), Reb Livingston (reminded me of childhood) and so many more. I think Dean Young has an interesting take on an idea from Alice in Wonderland.

I love the rebellious spirit in "Briefcase of Sorrow" where Richard Newman teasingly takes on a quote by Frances Mayes and literally paints an image based off a few words that seem to imply failure...and the poem races past the finish line and we feel like cheering, even silently. I will admit to the difficulty of even extracting a few lines to explain the beauty of the poems, because honestly the sentences are tightly woven together with meanings the reader could miss without the entire picture being painted in a set sequence of events that draws you in and presents clarity that often leads to a mysterious conclusions with a variety of interpretations. Instead of a moment here and a line there, you receive a much fuller experience and it is also emotionally satisfying.

Throughout The Best American Poetry 2006 you will find deliciously modern poems with pop culture references and plenty of moments you can relate to on a daily basis. This book is not filled with poems gathered from molding collections dusty with neglect found in some forgotten library. This is a collection of living breathing poems that sing the songs of seventy-five contemporary poets who reveal to us the life we are currently living and in that is the beauty of this reading experience.

If you are looking for modern romantic poetry, I can highly recommend "Eyes of the Poet" or "Poetry Collection de Jolie-Laide." For a truly magical experience you may also love " Something Familiar" by Kat Ricker. To truly say you have lived, you may also want to listen to Billy Collins read his poems. If you love this book, you will adore his poems. As a poet myself and a reader of many poetry books over the past few years, I can recommend this book as a welcome addition to anyone interested in collecting modern poems.

Not Worthy to Bear the Name THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY

This smugly-edited series has become a dreary example of careerist nepotism and features mainly short stories with linebreaks and jokey poems that are not funny.

Some choice awful lines:

Denise Duhamel: "Don't give into your cravings, you need to stay lean / So you can lift up your skirt as you prance and twirl..."

Kim Addonizio: "Better dead then fed. / He who laughs will not last. / Sticks and stones will break you,"

Thomas Lux: "that the eyes be gouged out / and replaced by hot coals / in the head, _the blockhead_,/ of each countrymen or woman who, / upon reaching their majority, / has yet to read MOBY DICK..."

Most of the poems herein, besides Franz Wright and Paul Violi among a scattered few, would have been better off as just titles than full poems. The big name poets featured have generally written better poems, the younger poets all seem to have some connection to the New School. It's incredibly disappointing: THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY 2006 could have been so much more. Instead, *it's* a joke.
