The Battle of Salamis: The Naval Encounter That Saved Greece -- and Western Civilization, by Barry Strauss

The battle of Salamis in 480 B.C. was the most important naval encounter of the ancient world. In the narrow strait between the island of Salamis and the Greek mainland, a heavily outnumbered Greek navy defeated the Persian armada in a brilliant victory that is still studied today. The Greek triumph at Salamis stopped the advancing Persians and saved the first democracy in history. It made Athens the dominant city in Greece, gave birth to the Athenian empire, and set the stage for the Age of Pericles. On the Persian side, the battle of Salamis also featured history's first female admiral and sailors from three continents.

The Battle of Salamis features some of the most fascinating figures in the ancient world: Themistocles, the Athenian commander who masterminded the victory (and tricked his fellow Greeks into fighting); Xerxes, the Persian king who understood land but not naval warfare; Aeschylus, the Greek playwright who took part at Salamis and later immortalized it in drama; and Artemisia, the half-Greek queen who was one of Xerxes' trusted commanders and who turned defeat into personal victory.

In his riveting story of this clash on the Greek seas, classicist and historian Barry Strauss offers a new in-depth account of the ancient battle. Drawing on recent work in archaeology, meteorology, and forensic science as well as on his own experience as a rower (both navies were oar powered), Strauss revises our understanding of one of history's pivotal wars and of Herodotus's classic if underrated account of it. But in addition to being exciting military history, The Battle of Salamis is also a vivid analysis of ancient culture.

From Publishers Weekly
This engaging and informative account of the 480 B. C. showdown between Greece and Persia relies on the conflict’s foremost ancient chronicler, Herodotus, whom Strauss deems an "excellent historian" and "mainly reliable." While gently correcting some of Herodotus’s claims, military historian Strauss (Athens After the Peloponnesian War) stays faithful to his trademark blend of sensationalism and skepticism. He regales readers with lurid Herodotian anecdotes about oracles and omens, vengeful eunuchs and labyrinthine double crosses among the fractious Greeks, and paints colorful portraits of the cruel and impious Xerxes, the admiral-queen Artemisia of Halicarnassus ("combines the cunning of Athena and the seductiveness of Aphrodite") and the Athenian leader Themistocles, whose blend of military genius, charisma and manipulativeness obliterated the line between statesmanship and treason. Also in keeping with the spirit of Greek sources, Strauss celebrates their victory as a triumph of democracy and nationalism over a polyglot despotism, of the common Greek rower over the Persian aristocrat. At the same time, Strauss draws on other contemporary accounts as well as on modern scholarship to detail the Persian campaign in Greece and flesh out a picture of society and warfare in the ancient world, illuminating such topics as Persian court protocol, the prayers of Corinthian temple prostitutes and the proper method of ramming an enemy trireme. His combination of erudite scholarship, well-paced storytelling and vivid color commentary make this an appealing popular history for the general reader.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School - This account of one of history's most famous battles has a fresh, invigorating tone. In 480 B.C., Xerxes, king of the Persian Empire, took a huge army and navy to invade Greece. Ten years earlier, his father's invasion to punish Greece for aiding Persia's rebelling subject states had failed. This time, Xerxes intended to get it right. Herodotus, Aeschylus, and Plutarch are the author's main sources, but he enriches the telling with details obtained from archaeological digs. Sights, sounds, and smells are evocatively described, whether Strauss is showing how the rowers powered their triremes or speculating about the dress of the participants at Xerxes's council. Although the improbable Greek victory is well known, the tension builds as Themistocles's traps are carefully sprung. Strauss is respectful toward his sources, but he corrects probable errors and exaggerations. Despite the huge number of known participants, he focuses on the most significant, so that readers aren't swamped by a recitation of names. When unfamiliar places are mentioned, he gives the modern names as well. In addition to being an engrossing story of an improbable battle, this book is an excellent, compact study of daily life in the fifth century. A timetable and photographs of Salamis and archaeological artifacts are included. - Kathy Tewell, Chantilly Regional Library, VA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Leading historians, respected educators, and fellow authors agree: Strauss’s account of this epic battle is a superbly told, historically accurate narrative of one of the most intriguing and dramatic showdowns in naval history. The author, a professor of history and classics at Cornell University, draws on recent work in archaeology, meteorology, and forensic science as well as his own rowing experience to enrich readers’ understanding of naval history and ancient culture. A few reviewers found fault with some rough transitions and occasional wordiness, however. Still, they generally lauded Strauss’s natural storytelling abilities that enable him to present a complex tale of deception, desperation, and warfare in a well-paced, erudite, and appealing manner.

Themistocles, Saviour of Western Civilization
By Peter J. Keiser
Excellent! Well-written, easy to read, interesting and fact-filled. Provides the how and why the Greek coalition won at Salamis, mainly through Themistocles's manipulations of both sides to bring on the battle where and when he wanted it. Good maps. Good analysis of the ancient historians and their particular viewpoints, primarily those of Herodotus. Highly recommended!

When are they going to make the movie?
By thirteen28
If the story of The Battle of Thermoplyae was worthy of the movie '300', then certainly the story of The Battle of Salamis is worth cinematic treatment as well. I know I'd buy a ticket to see that story re-told on the big screen.

Barry Strauss has done an outstanding job of chronicling one of the most famous naval battles of the ancient world. Strauss does an excellent job of setting the stage by recounting the history of the Persian Wars up to and through the Battle of Thermopylae and the subsequent abandonment of Athens for Salamis Island. The heart of the book in my opinion revolves around the events that took place on Salamis Island just prior to the battle. Strauss recounts how the battle as it happened nearly didn't take place - and how the intrigue of Thermistocles resulted in the battle likely being won before it was fought. After this, Strauss discusses the battle itself, and the wisdom of Thermistocles' actions become crystal clear.

All in all, this was a book I found difficult to put down. If you are interested in this era of history, then I highly recommend it.

Like a movie script almost
By Buenoslibros.es
It is no pulp history, but it isn't academical highbrow blabbery either. Here is all you want to know about the times and the men who fought on both sides of the most important naval battle of ancient times.

Herodotus is given back the honors he deserves. Whatever we don't quite know for sure the author fills up with plausible explanations according to the way people would act in those times. The vividness is stupendously accomplished. Full of data without seeming tiresome.

A talented historian and writer. Only in the last pages he seems to offer a slight moral assesment, as a lesson to modern political figures to heed. Unworthy of the book overall. Great read. Whatever subject you like to read about.

Oh, and the figure of Themistocles is superb. What a character! Sure to bring hours and hours of discussion among his fans and detractors.

From Publishers Weekly
Morgenstern, a professional organizer with clients like Time Warner, shares advice and anecdotal revamp stories for anyone who ever needed to clean out a drawer, closet or personal planner. Her guiding principle in fighting clutter, over-scheduling and bad habits is called SHED: Separate treasures, Heave the rest, Embrace identity from within, and Drive yourself forward. Morgenstern's chatty advice includes ways to let go, develop a "theme" for your future and "heave" successfully (with lists of places to send stuff). Her theory is that, although one may miss certain possessions or habits, freed-up space will inevitably open unseen vistas, allowing the new you to move forward. Morgenstern supplies timelines, entire chapters on living in the moment and breaking the mold, as well as quizzes and work sheets. She also examines, in-depth, typical emotional reactions to shaking free of the old, and encourages small steps toward revolution: "Don't be so quick to reenact the Boston Tea Party." Client case studies pose intriguing challenges, from obsessive email checking to good but unfulfilling jobs to an overabundance of shoes and accessories.

A pirate's treasure map and shovel so you can find buried riches and leave the deserted island
By Amazon fan
This book is the pirate's treasure map and shovel; use these to dig the hole and find the payoff: a free one-way trip from Stuck Island.

Six months ago, while I waited for the book to arrive, I entered the SHED cycle based on information in other reviews of this book. During that week I second-guessed the order - couldn't I declutter and get unstuck without it? The answer is "yes" - after all, the author got unstuck years ago without having this book, but not systematically: she had to figure it out over a period of years. I made a big declutter a couple of years ago but it wasn't on the scale Julie recommends. Although my home looked better, my life didn't get noticeably unstuck. Clearly I needed a systematic, tried-and-refined method. This book offered it.

This systematic program allows you to be productive quickly but, because you are doing some intensive psychological rearranging, you must allow for organic evolution. For me it wasn't a matter of doing Step 1, then Step 2 in linear fashion, as the book suggests. There were several steps going on simultaneously. For example naming my theme was not a simple one-week task, even with the helpful examples; it was continually refined thoughout the SH steps.

I naively thought I'd finish all the SH steps within a month or two, but I had to rest after each stagnant area because I was drained. It's not like I had a ton of stuff but there were some significant dead zones. I worked hard throughout Spring and Summer.

Then a couple of curious things happened with no effort on my part: I was transferred to a new job in a less dysfunctional setting and a friend told me about a new beginner-level class that I had been unable to find earlier. This class was perfect for launching the shed's ED phase. These two events were like having previously deadbolted doors thrown wide open for me.

Open doors are a wonderful thing to behold when you are stuck. Someday I just might realize that long-forgotten dream (a hidden treasure) that I remembered while sorting through a box of cassette tapes.

After the SH grind I am more keenly aware of clutter (in all forms) when it first shows up on the radar...and I don't allow it on board.

This book is like having a personal coach on retainer. Julie will tell you that even though you can't see any life-treasures right now they are there, buried under the sands of time. All you need is the pirate's map and a shovel. You will feel reassured when Julie says "Nearly all my clients experienced XYZ during this step." You will be able to gauge your progress when Julie says "You will know you have done enough when ABC happens..." Your determination will be renewed when Julie says "One year later, Client X reported they had more clarity and energy and they felt their life was on track."

Not just a book for hoarders - it is not just abou the "stuff"
By Steve Price
While the title may lead you to believe this is just another book about how to get rid of stuff you do not need (I had this impression myself,) this is so not the case. This book is not just for hoarders, it is for anyone who has stuff, habits, and/or obligations that do not help them accomplish what they want to accomplish in life. The funny thing is you may have these things in your life but not fully realize it until you ready this book.

What Do You Think of Ted Williams Now?: A Remembrance, by Richard Ben Cramer

When legendary Red Sox hitter Ted Williams died on July 5, 2002, newspapers reviewed the stats, compared him to other legends of the game, and declared him the greatest hitter who ever lived. Richard Ben Cramer, Pulitzer Prize winner and acclaimed biographer of Joe DiMaggio, decodes this oversized icon who dominated the game and finds not just a great player, but also a great man. In 1986, Richard Ben Cramer spent months on a profile of Ted Williams, and the result was the Esquire article that has been acclaimed ever since as one of the finest pieces of sports reporting ever written. Given special acknowledgment in The Best American Sportswriting of the Century and adapted for a coffee-table book called Ted Williams: The Seasons of the Kid, the original piece is now available in this special edition, with new material about Williams' later years. While his decades after Fenway Park were out of the spotlight -- the way Ted preferred it -- they were arguably his richest, as he loved and inspired his family, his fans, the players, and the game itself. This is a remembrance for the ages.

Ted Williams

August 30, 1918

July 5, 2002

Even in the last years of his life -- even as America and the sub-nation of baseball hungrily re-embraced him -- I knew I could provoke surprise (and more than a few arguments) when I said that Ted Williams was not just a great ballplayer, he was a great man.

Reputation dies hard in the baseball nation, and in the larger industry of American iconography. Even at the close of the century, forty years after he'd left the field, there still attached to Ted a lingering whiff of bile from the days when he spat toward booing Fenway fans. And there were heartbroken hundreds who'd freshen that scent with their stories: how he was rude to them when they tried to interrupt him for an autograph or a grip-and-grin photo. (The thousands who got their signatures or snapshots found that unremarkable.)

In the northeast corner of the nation, there were still thousands who blamed Ted for never hauling the Red Sox to World Series triumph. (Someone must bear blame for decades of disappointment when their own rooting love was so piquant and pure.)...Around New York more thousands still resented Ted -- and had to reduce him -- for contesting with Joe DiMaggio for the title of Greatest of the Golden Age. They insisted that Ted never won anything (and reviled him, in short, for never being a Yankee)....And westward through the baseball nation -- even where the game, not a team, was the passion -- historians huffed about his merit (or lack thereof) in left field; the stat-priests essayed talmudic arguments about how many runs he failed to drive in (because he'd never swing at a pitch out of the strike zone); and millions of kindly, casual fans (even those who'd agree Ted was the greatest hitter) seemed comfortable if they could tuck him into some pigeonhole -- most often as a minor freak of nature: "Wasn't it true his eyes were twice as good as a normal man's?"...

They missed the point. It wasn't his eyes, it was the avid mind behind them, and the great heart below. Ted was the greatest hitter because he knew more about that job than anyone else. He studied it relentlessly. If you knew anything about it, he wanted to know it -- and RIGHT NOW! He ripped the art into knowable shards, which he then could teach with clarity, with conviction (something he was never short on), and with surprising patience and generosity. That's how he was about anything he loved. It was the love that drove him.

Fans couldn't take their eyes off Ted because they could feel his heart yearning with theirs. His want -- in his guilelessness he never could hide it -- was ratification for theirs. If the coin of his love flipped, and all they could see was rage -- still, it was honest currency, for there was no counterfeit in him. Love and rage make a warrior...and in the inarticulate gush of words that attended his death in 2002, the particularity of our loss was lost. There were endless rehearsals of his stats, and comparisons to Ruth, Cobb, Gehrig, DiMaggio (of course), Hornsby, Wagner, Mays, Aaron, Barry Bonds...there was solemn reference to his service as a pilot in two wars, and speculation on where Ted might have protruded from the great number-pile if he hadn't lost those five prime years...there were interviews that seemed intent on reassuring fans that Ted was a nice guy. But he wasn't a nice guy. He was an impossibly high-wide-and-handsome, outsized, obstreperous major-league overload of a man who dominated dugouts and made grand any ground he played on -- because his great warrior heart could fill ten ballparks. And latterly (here was our loss writ large), he was our link to that time before baseball became just another arm of the entertainment cartel.

I met Ted in 1986, in service to the entertainment biz: the editors of Esquire were scrabbling for features to fit between the ads in an issue the size of a small phone book, entitled "The American Man." And they had the inchoate sense that, somehow, Ted was The American Man. (Problem was, he was a Famously Uncooperative American Man.) So they sent me to meet him. The written product of that encounter -- you'll see it in the pages that follow -- they ran under the heading: "Mr. Everything."

But I want to spend a minute here on the unwritten product -- unwritten because it didn't come clear for years after that publication -- what I learned from that meeting with Ted. The big thing was he helped me -- when he didn't have to -- helped me to see him, understand him, feel with him, and have him in my life. He gave of himself with generosity that he knew would be unrecompensed -- and with a fearlessness about his own size that was truly exemplary -- that would change my life.

Why didn't I write that?...Well, I wrote what I understood. Anyway, I wasn't the story. But, truth be told, it was hard to tell he was helping me, when I'd leave his house all bruised from his insults and half-deaf from his latest loud evidence of how much he knew and I didn't. If I had to sum up what he showed me, it was the difference between politesse -- Ted wasn't big on that -- and what was the large, true-blue, right thing to do.

Here's one small example. In those days, I was a cigarette smoker, which horrified Ted. Not only had he never smoked, he was way ahead of his time in allowing no smoke around him. So if the urge struck, I'd idle through a Camel in his backyard, with its view of the mangroves and the Florida Bay. One day, he was shouting in his living room when the phone rang -- he started cursing. (He hated the phone, too.) I only spoke to calm him. "Go ahead, Ted, take the call. I'm goin' out back to have a smoke."

"That smokin'," he growled, "that's the WORST goddamn thing you could do. HOW OLD ARE YOU?"

"Thirty-five."

"WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE, I COULD PULL A TREE OUTA THE GROUND!...AN' LOOK AT YOU -- LOSIN' YER HAIR!"

It was later, too, I understood this was pattern with Ted. He had to rough up the people he meant to help. If you asked him about this, he would answer with a purely tactical truth -- in situations where you mean to teach, it's useful to keep clear who knows and who doesn't. But strategically this syndrome was a disaster: as a husband, father, and subject for the sporting press, it brought him unending grief. Ted's old friends couldn't explain it, but they all knew the pattern -- and richly enjoyed it. When the old-timers gathered to teach at spring training camp, Bobby Doerr, the erstwhile Sox second baseman, used to grab some young, eager Boston prospect and counsel him to go tell Ted how he meant to swing down on the ball, and tomahawk-chop it for base hits all over the field. Then Doerr and his cronies would watch in glee as Ted erupted in profane abuse all over the child -- after which, of course, Ted would spend all day to teach that boy the full theory and practice of hitting (which included, in Ted's view, a slight uppercut).

But it wasn't just hitting, or only Red Sox. At an All-Star Game, World Series, or some other inter-tribal rite, Ted might lavish hours of attention on a hunting-dog confab with Bobby Richardson (who was, for God's sake, a Yankee). Apart from the knowledge shared, this was additionally satisfying because Ted could yell at everybody else that they might as well stay the hell away, because he and Bobby were talkin' DOGS -- about which they knew NOT A GODDAMN THING!...Or Ted might buttonhole some young man -- a player of any position, from any team -- who wasn't living up to his talent. And in the guise of a talk about hitting, Ted would teach Living Large. He'd tell them, if they would attend to the game -- instead of every gonorrheal girl who'd flop on her back, or their antique cars, or those STUPID damn drugs, or those UGLY gold chains, or ferChrist-on-a-crutch-sake PORK-BELLY FUTURES -- they could end up with a "MAJOR-LEAGUE NAME" that would be the ticket for "YER WHOLE GODDAMN LIFE!"

None of that ever saw print. For one thing, half of Ted's talk couldn't be printed in a family newspaper. For another, Ted simply wouldn't talk about it. ("WHY THE HELL SHOULD I?")...No one ever wrote, for example, that when Darryl Strawberry spiraled out of baseball in a gyre of alcohol, cocaine, and litigious women...when his imminent return to the Yankees was sadly scuttled by another acting out -- a D.U.I., or getting kicked out of rehab, or something (Straw's woes are hard to keep straight now)...the first call he got was not from his lawyer but from Ted Williams, who barely knew him, but who invited Darryl to come live at his house.

This was also pattern with Ted -- hiding the generosity of spirit that made him a great man. Maybe he assumed it would be misunderstood. Or worse still, too widely understood. "FerCHRISSAKE! YER MAKIN' ME A DAMN SOCIAL WORKER," he yelled at me one time. This was the fact he wouldn't let me print:

For years, personally and secretly, Ted had been keeping a lot of guys in business -- guys too old to qualify for baseball's pension, or they didn't have enough time in the majors, or they didn't have the talent and never made it to the majors -- and mostly they were guys too proud to ask, but he knew they were just scraping by. He'd call them up. He'd tell them he was collecting for charity -- the Jimmy Fund for kids with cancer, or his museum, something -- and they'd hem and haw about how things weren't great with them, just at the moment, might be tough to pitch in...."GODDAMMIT, I CALLED YA!" Ted would bellow into the phone. "SEND ME A CHECK FER TEN BUCKS, SONOFABITCH!"...Then, when he got their check with the number, he'd deposit ten grand into their account.

Baseball's version of "The Lion In Winter"
By Johnny Sideburns
Ted Williams lived the kind of irrepressible life that Hollywood tried to invent for its toughest actors; old-skool masculinity personified, he was the finest baseball player of a generation (if not all time), a fisherman worthy of Hemingway's prose, and a lifelong Marine who served his country in not one but TWO deadly wars, the second of which nearly cost him his own life.

He was the eternal paradox, the New England sports hero with the "When Guns Are Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Have Guns" bumper sticker on his pick-up truck, the all-time All-Star outfielder who practiced his swing while playing defense, the surly bane to those in the sports press charged with selling his image to the Boston public, and the eternal cynic who could never fully give himself to the public's adoration because he would always hear the 2 or 3 boos among the thousands of cheers his very presence on the field generated.

This book does a fine job of encapsulating the highlights of Williams' career, covered sparingly among a (then) current interview of the man as living legend approaching his 70's. But the real joy and success of the book is the author's capturing the essence of the magnitude of Williams to the point that you can't possibly help but feel that you are listening to the man thunder away in your own living room, rather than from a far-off house in the Florida Keys (or from the more appropriate peak of Mount Olympus). Most enjoyable to me is the author's penchant FOR PRINTING WILLIAMS' QUOTES IN ALL CAPS (wherein I can't help but read them aloud -and at suitable volume- to my fiancee', much to her dismay).

We have a suitable account of Williams' life after his time as an active player and manager, but before his health began to rapidly deteriorate. It is a full portrait, balancing the more infamous qualities of the man with those that Williams fiercely guarded during his lifetime; that he was, beneath the callous exterior, as warm and giving a soul that baseball would be far more fortunate than it deserves to have as an ambassador today.

It's a joy to read, seemingly almost an afterthought in its brevity, but when considered that it was only ever supposed to be an article for Esquire magazine, it surely ranks among the finest sports writing of all time.

From Publishers Weekly
This engaging, accessible book of essays from Pulitzer Prize-winning philosopher and historian Durant, author of the authoritative 11-volume Story of Civilization, should be essential reading for anyone interested in the evolution of thought. Little, the founder and director of The Will Durant Foundation, includes in his slim compendium such works as "The One Hundred 'Best' Books For an Education" and "Twelve Vital Dates in World History." Durant's "The Ten 'Greatest' Thinkers" details minds as enlightening as Confucius and as influential as Darwin, whom Durant says "reduced man to an animal fighting for his transient mastery of the globe." "The Ten 'Greatest' Poets," charts a course from Homer's brilliance to Dante's haunted heart to Whitman's "frank and lusty" originality, in prose peppered with biographical bon mots and excerpts of the world's loveliest poems. Lay folks especially will find this a delightful introduction to Durant's irrepressible style. What else would one expect from Durant, an intellect who, when asked, "Whom in all of history would you most like to have known?" drolly replied, "Madame de Pompadour."

From Booklist
By the time of his death in 1981, it was fashionable for many scholars to deride the works of Will Durant; his faith in human progress and emphasis upon the great achievements of individuals seemed outmoded in circles that stressed pessimism about the fate of humanity and lauded the power of mass movements. So it is refreshing to again encounter historical writing that brims with optimism and pays just tribute to individual minds and ideas that have shaped history and advanced both moral and material progress. Editor Little is a lecturer on philosophy, a documentary filmmaker, and director of the Will Durant Foundation. His compilation of Durant's essays is divided into sections on the greatest thinkers, poets, books, and landmarks of human progress. Even Durant acknowledges that his efforts to rate "top tens" borders on the frivolous, but there is nothing frivolous about Durant's elegant prose and cogent insight into the lives and minds of men as diverse as Confucius, Voltaire, and Darwin. This compact work is a gem that elevates historical writing to the level of superb literature. Jay Freeman

All the People You Will Ever Need to Know in History
By N.J. Terry
We all took Social Science in school, where we learn history; Mesopotamia, the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, Greeks, Romans... we all learn that. What we don't learn is how each of those dynasties could have been predicted due to the cyclical nature of the world.

Will Durant sums up all the people and dates that you need to know to understand why the world was the way it was and how it is the way it is. He describes how history and economic growth are interrelated, history and government, history and a slew of other things.

It's amazing how much information he was able to find into such a short book (127 pages).

Accurate Title, Wonderful Book
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
Some will obviously quibble over Will Durant's selections, but I will not. I got hooked on Durant after reading his 1916 doctoral disseration (a full thirty years after I acquired the multi-volume History of Civilization), and have been working my way through various "short books" in the past six months.

Here are my fly-leaf notes.

Slams H. G. Wells early on. Durant seems to be the anti-thesis to Marx.

He opens by pointing out that the greatest minds of history were those of philosphy and science, not captains of war, priests, or artists.

As is my tendency, I praise the book by summarizing it. Below are his lists.

Ten greatest thinkers:
01 Confucius as a moral philosopher
02 Plato for first university, philosophy as means of remolding world
03 Aristotle as philosopher and scientists, creating new science
04 St. Thomas Aquinas for bridging between knowledge and belief
05 Copernicus (Poland) for astronomy and mathematics, shifting attention from man to the cosmos
06 Sir Francis Bacon, for knowledge as remodeling power, opened eyes to nature (see my review of Intelligence in Nature, forthcoming).
07 Sir Isaac Newton, for scientific mastery of modern thought
08 Voltaire for ending despotism and starting the enlightenment, but see my review of Voltaire's Bastards: The Dictatorship of Reason in the West
09 Immanuel Kant for mind over materialism, restored faith to co-equal status with science
10 Charles Darwin for state of nature, life as conflict, natural selection

Ten greatest poets:
01 Homer
02 "David"
03 Garupedes
04 Lucretius
05 Li Po
06 Dante
07 Shakespeare
08 Keats
09 Shelly
10 Whitman

Ten "Peaks" for Humanity
01 Speech
02 Fire
03 Conquest of Animals
04 Agriculture
05 Social Organization
06 Morality [see my review of The Lessons of History)
07 Tools
08 Science
09 Education
10 Writing & Print

I have a note to myself in which I iclude the Internet in #10, and see #11 as being "True Cost" accounting, see my reviews of, among others:
Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came into Being and Why No One Saw It Coming
Ecological Economics: Principles And Applications
The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

Twelve Major Dates in Human History
01 4241 BC Egyptian Calendar
02 543 BC Death of Buddha
03 478 BC Death of Confucius
04 199 BC Death of Socrates
05 44 BC Death of Caesar
06 BC-AD Birth of Christ
07 AD 632 Death of Mohammed
08 AD 1294 Death of Roger Bacon, birth of gunpowder
09 AD 1455 Gutenberg Press
10 AD 1492 Columbus discovers America (see 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus
11 AD 1769 James Watt and the Steam Engine
12 AD 1789 French Revolution

One can only speculate at what he might have picked in the past century or two, that alone would make a marvelous semester-long course.

The book has a lovely index of all names, both those considered and those considered but not selected.

I consider this a classic gift item, along with Ralph Nader's The Seventeen Traditions and Durant's Lessons of History linked above as well as his edited work drawing out others On the Meaning of Life

For my own contribution, a work marvelously edited by Canadian PhD candidate Mark Tovey, see Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace. All of the work I have sponsored or produced can be found for free at OSS.Net.

From Publishers Weekly
Kushner's new book is likely to match his When Bad Things Happen to Good People as a bestseller. In the rabbi's sympathetic and eminently readable guide, discontented people can find reasons to banish doubts on whether living is worthwhile. The Book of Ecclesiastes is the main source of reassurance here, for the spiritually bankrupt. Citing the short entry in the Old Testament as "the most dangerous in the Bible," the author argues that a fear of uselessness is humanity's ancient enemy. Ecclesiastes poured out his complaints that all his wealth and wisdom and achievements were nothing: he must die and be forgotten like an animal. Why does God withhold the power to enjoy the gifts that are the scribe's by the grace of God? Exploring the despair voiced in these pages, Kushner emphasizes the lesson that the unknown writer finally learned more than 1000 years agoevery person matters. Readers will benefit from Kushner's advice on making their lives matter to themselves and others. First serial to Redbook; Literary Guild selection.

Some Can Whistle, by Larry McMurtry

"Mr. Deck, are you my stinkin' Daddy?" In a furious phone call from T.R., the daughter he's never met, Danny Deck gets the jolt of his life. A TV writer who's retired to his Texas mansion, Danny spends his days talking to the answering machines of his ex-lovers from New York to Paris and dreaming of the characters in the sitcom he's created. But suddenly, a hurricane called T.R. is storming into his life...
In his most moving and richly comic contemporary novel since Texasville, Larry McMurtry returns to the modern West he created so masterfully in The Last Picture Show and Terms of Endearment. Some Can Whistle spins a tale of Hollywood glitz and Texas grit; of an extraordinary young woman and a murderous young man; and of a middle-aged millionaire running head-on into the longings, joys, and pathos of real life.

From Publishers Weekly
Picking up the life of Danny Deck, the memorable protagonist of All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers , McMurtry's latest novel is another dark comedy about the difficulty of maintaining intimate relationships. Unfortunately, it never soars as high as the author's best work; as Deck ironically reflects: "Everything . . . I . . . said or thought seemed to be a parody of something that I had once . . . said or thought more vigorously or better." Deck, at 51, is fat, lonely and rich, the latter thanks to his number one-rated TV sitcom. He is an emotional and physical recluse living in west Texas, playing perennial host to gay retired classics professor, druggie and nudist Godwin Lloyd-Jon, and communicating with a network of former lovers via answering machine. After he is contacted by his 22-year-old daughter, T.R., who he last saw on the night of her birth, Deck begins his slow progress (impeded by frequent migraines) from solitude toward a "reconnection" with reality. T.R. is belligerent, uneducated, foulmouthed, defiantly lower class, and the mother of children fathered by two men with criminal records. Deck attempts to counter her deep, bitter anger with the love he had stifled for so many years. Full of events that defy credibility, and peopled with characters whose relentless eccentricities are not remotely appealing, the novel further suffers from rampant sentimentality. In all, not a major effort, but readable because of the cumulative power of McMurtry's narrative skills. BOMC featured selection.

A book phoned in
By George M Woods
An author such as McMurty can't be forgiven a book such as this, he is, after all, the man who wrote such greats as Lonesome Dove, the Thalia and Berrybender series (more embarrassingly, Dead Man's Walk) so it's clear he has the requisite skills. This novel exhibits none of them. He should have, as he has the novel's protagonist doing, drowned the manuscript in the Rio Grande. It is boring, stuffed with detail of no significance and unlikeable characters. The plot is implausible, the ending abrupt. It has all the hallmarks of a great author who has exhausted his gift. (Though the Berrybender series follows it.)

Danny Deck's epilogue--funny, engulfing and tearful.
By A Customer
Danny Deck is a character that winds through many McMurtystories, but this is his first major appearance since "All MyFriends.." In both books, Deck is like the audience watching a performance artist--set on the role of observer, but often getting sucked in (bewildered and unprepared) by the artist's actions. Things begin with Danny sitting at breakfast in his Los Dolores mansion (same house that Jacy stayed in during "Texasville"). He's stinking rich from his successful sit-com years and quarreling with Godwin, his lecherous gadfly/friend from "All My Friends.." The phone rings: his 22-year old daughter, from his short and rough marriage with Sally, is taking him to task. Danny tracks down his girl and brings her to Los Dolores along with the usual unusual cast of McMurty characters. How they get along in this group brings in some hilarious moments (the ex-con boyfriend accidently blowing up Danny's oil tanks while target shooting his AK-47 is one good example). Danny has little choice but to leap into his father/grandfather roles and finds renewed joy in life.
McMurtry uses the theme of death and coping with grief thoughout much of his work--but this story is truly devastating. How Danny tries to keep going for the remnants of his new family is powerful and very moving. Although hard to read in places due to these intense moments, I count this as one of McMurtry's best. The Fully Woven Story
By Daniel D Sullivan
There are so many facets to a McMurtry tale that it is not possible to explain his method without a reading most of the many books that led to this one. It was a while before I began to suspect something was a bit amiss in this novel. The wide ranging story of Texans from a former Texas ex-patriot is rarely as raw as this even though he is often raw. I read the prequel (All May Friends Are Going To Be Strangers) to this 40 years ago and one day in his Georgetown bookstore asked McMurtry what ever happened to Danny Deck, the narrator of the novel. " Still walking down that river." he told me. Now I know and now I am even more certain than before who Danny is. Fully aware of the Hortons' trials and Duane's travails, the last 25 pages or so of this work are the saddest he's ever written and that is saying some. You'll have a sense of that even if you haven't read all that has come before. I am somehow glad that I waited until now to read all that I didn't want to know.

Chapter 1

THE NATURE OF AROMATHERAPY

Like herbalism, aromatherapy draws on the healing powers of the plant world, but instead of using the whole or part of a plant, it employs only its essential oil. This potent, aromatic substance is housed in tiny glands on the outside or deep inside the roots, wood, leaves, flowers, or fruit of a plant. It is a dynamic, concentrated representation of the healing properties of the plant, and is believed by some to contain its life force. Hence care must be taken to extract the oil in its pure state.

In aromatherapy, inhalation, application, and baths are the principal methods used to encourage essential oils to enter the body. Essential oils are highly volatile, evaporating readily on exposure to air, and when inhaled, may enter the body via the olfactory system. When diluted and applied externally, essential oil molecules may permeate the skin. Bath treatments enable you to both inhale and absorb the oils. For detailed information on the main routes of entry into the body, see pages 16 to 17.

Once within your system, essential oils will work to re-establish harmony and revitalize those systems or organs where there is a malfunction or lack of balance. Their effects are many and varied (pages 16 and 93), but they are noted in particular for their antiseptic properties and their ability to restore balance to both body and mind.

A variety of factors help to determine the effectiveness of an aromatherapy treatment: the quality of the essential oils, their appropriateness for a particular individual or a specific ailment, the methods by which they are applied (pages 21 to 32), and, in the case of a professional treatment, the extent and quality of interaction between the therapist and the patient (page 33). When, for example, specialized aromatherapy massage is combined with the holistic selection of oils by a trained therapist, the effects can be truly exceptional. With self-help aromatherapy, you will be using oils recommended for a particular ailment or preventative treatment, but it should not take you long to discover which of them work best for you as an individual, particularly since simply liking the aroma of an oil may indicate that it will help you.

Producing Quality Essential Oils

To work therapeutically, essential oils need to be of the highest quality: pure, unadulterated, and, preferably, harvested from organically grown plants cultivated in optimum conditions.

When aromatic plants are produced for the perfume and food industries, the use of pesticides and fertilizers is accepted, since it gives greater and more uniform yields. For aromatherapy, natural, or organic, growing methods are preferred, since agrochemicals may come through in the extraction process. The altitude and soil in which the plants are grown are also important in determining the quality of the oil. Lavender raised at a high altitude on stony, dry soil yields oil of a higher therapeutic standard than that grown in rich, damp conditions on low ground. The time chosen for harvesting is significant, since it affects not only the concentration of essential oil in the plant but also its chemical composition.

The essential oil of a plant may also be affected by chemotyping, a process whereby cuttings are raised in such a way that they produce more of a desired chemical constituent. The genus of Thyme, for example, has one chemotype (for use by professional aromatherapists only) that contains a high level of carvacrol, a powerful antiseptic. By contrast, linalol, geraniol, and thujanol chemotypes of Thyme have much gentler properties. All, however, are sold under the same latin name and, unless details are given on the label, it is best not to buy or use Thyme essential oil, since the carvacrol chemotype is the one most commonly available.

To extract essential oils in their pure state, different methods are used depending on where the essential oil is situated. With plants from the Labiatae family, such as Lavender and Peppermint, the essential oil glands are easily accessible, being situated on the outside of the leaves. This makes them suitable for distillation, a process in which the freshly picked or dried plant material is packed tightly into a still and steam sent through it. The heat bursts open the glands and the oil evaporates, mixing with the steam. A cooling process returns the vapours to their liquid state and the essential oil separates from the water. In the Myrtaceae family, which includes both Eucalyptus and Tea Tree, the glands are less accessible and may need bruising prior to distillation.

Citrus fruits yield their oils through hand or machine expression, which involves squeezing or scraping the rind. Where essential oil is contained in the naturally secreted resin of a plant, a solvent may be used in the extraction process. The exuded resin is dissolved in warm alcohol and filtered. The alcohol is then removed at a low temperature, leaving the resinoid: the essential oil plus a small proportion of the chemicals used. Absolutes of Rose and Orange Blossom are produced by a similar process; they have different chemical compositions and aromas to the pure, distilled oils of Rose Otto and Neroli (Orange Blossom).

Aromatherapy users make up a negligible part of the worldwide market for essential oils. Perfume and food manufacturers, together with the pharmaceutical industry, are the main consumers. Sadly, neither of the first two is concerned primarily with purity, but rather require the oils they buy to conform to a set standard. Without adulteration, this is impossible to achieve, since essential oils are like wine - they have good and bad years, and their aromas and flavours vary accordingly. When an oil fails to meet a customer's requirement, steps may be taken to bring it up to the required standard by adding: a poorer quality oil, a single aromatic constituent (natural or synthesized), or alcohol. As a result, sources of pure essential oils have diminished, and it is doubtful supply will meet the increase in demand predicted for the year 2000.

Oils and their Chemistry

Essential oils have complex molecular structures and may contain up to several hundred different natural chemicals. Alcohols, esters, ketones, phenols, and aldehydes are those that feature prominently and which have been most closely studied with regard to their therapeutic potential. In general, essential oils high in alcohols and esters have gentle healing properties and are safe for home use. Ketones, phenols, and aldehydes are more powerful chemicals that are also active therapeutically. Oils that contain high concentrations of these are rarely used in aromatherapy (List B, page 5), since they can have adverse effects if employed incorrectly; you should not include them in self-help treatments. A professional aromatherapist, however, may prescribe them in very small doses as a means of providing speedy relief for a specific complaint.

Many of the other chemicals present in an essential oil (including the minor and, as yet, nameless ones) are thought to play a vital role in preventing side effects. Evidence for this has come from the current practice of isolating the therapeutic elements of essential oils and incorporating them in tablets and other forms of medication. The aldehyde, citral, for example, is present in lemon oil and has many beneficial effects on the body. When isolated, however, it is a very toxic substance that can cause severe skin irritation. The indication that these chemicals may contribute to the total action, or synergy, of an oil is one of the reasons why aromatherapists believe that synthetically produced equivalents cannot possibly be as effective, and that they may even be potentially hazardous.

A beautiful pictorial of popular essential oil plants!
By Reba
I have been practicing, teaching and selling aromatherapy for ten years. As such, I have many books on aromatherapy. This one is unique. I purchased AROMATHERAPY FOR COMMON AILMENTS for the full page, breath taking photographs of 13 essential oil plants. But - it is much more. Illnesses and ways to heal these illnesses with essential oils are discussed. Massage techniques are illustrated and explained. Safety guidelines are outlined. Recipes for blends are given. This is a good book for the beginning aromatherapist. It can also be useful to the more advanced person. Shirley Price is a professional, practicing aromatherapist. Her love and respect for the profession shines through-out this text. Highly recommend!

Great For Beginners
By Eli
I know very little about aromatherapy. I purchased this book in hopes of replacing scented candles and was searching for additional mood enhancing elements, to get me through these long Winter months. This book is perfect for what I wanted. I would highly recommend it. It's all very accessible and educational.
