Enthusiastic about enthusiasm

This is one of the best books I have ever read on the topic of turning adversity into advantage. I have several of Norman Vincent Peale's books and loved them all - but this one beats the rest in that it seems to me to be the easiest to put into practice. There are several real-life examples of success and lots of different ways of going about it. Basically - be enthusiastic about life, youself, and, of course, God. One of the good things about this book is that God doesn't come into it from the beginning, meaning that those who have no faith are hooked by the ideas for improving their lives before they get chance to be put off by ideas of 'the God squad' I have combed England to get hold of another copy. - The original one I read was published in UK in 1991 and is now out of print - I am more delighted than I can say to find it here - I have lots of people of my acquaintance to whom I intend to give it. I must be impressed to want to buy it just to give it away!

the best peale book i've read

This book is by far the best of about 3 Norman Vincent Peale books I have read. While it does tend to repeat stories from his other books(after reading a couple I think they all do), it also has the ability to make you motivated into doing something right now. Peale has the ability to make you want to do something with your life right now and not wait until tommorrow comes. I've notice his advice of just "putting a smile on your face everyday" really works and I think it will for you as well!

Another great read

Written before the power of positive thinking(same author),this book is a helpful read in setting moods, attitudes, and tones for life. Though Peale is a Pastor, he does a great job in not alienating those who do not share the same faith. This book can be read by anyone who has an open mind and wants effective tools to create positive energy in their life.

Born in the late 1970s to fugitive leaders of the Weather Underground and grandson of Communists, spiritual pacifists, and civil rights agitators, Jones grew up an heir to an American tradition of resistance. The dramatic saga of A Radical Line begins in 1913, when Jones's maternal grandmother was born, and ends in 1981, when a score of heavily armed government agents from the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force stormed into four-year-old Thai's home and took his parents away in handcuffs. In between, Jones takes us on a journey from the turn-of-the-century western frontier to the tenements of melting-pot Brooklyn, through the Great Depression, the era of McCarthyism, and the Age of Aquarius.
Jones's paternal grandfather, Albert Jones, committed himself to pacifism during the 1930s and refused to fight in World War II. The author's maternal grandfather, Arthur Stein, was a member of the Communist Party during the 1950s and refused to collaborate with the House Un-American Activities Committee. His maternal grandmother, Annie Stein, worked closely with civil rights legends Mary Church Terrell and Ella Baker to desegregate institutions in Washington, D.C., and New York City.
His father, Jeff Jones, joined the violent Weathermen and led hundreds of screaming hippies through the streets of Chicago to clash with police during the Days of Rage in 1969. Then Jeff Jones disappeared and spent the next eleven years eluding the FBI's massive manhunt. Thai Jones spent the first years of his life on the run with his parents.
Beyond the politics, this is the story of a family whose lives were filled with love honored and betrayed, tragic deaths, painful blunders, narrow escapes, and hope-filled births. There is the drama of a pacifist father who must reconcile with a bomb-throwing son and a Communist mother whose daughter refuses to accept the lessons she has learned in a life as an organizer. There are parents and children who can never meet or, when they do, must use the ruses and subterfuge of criminals to steal a hug and a hello.
Beautifully written and sweeping in its scope, A Radical Line is nothing less than a history of the twentieth century and of one American family who lived to shake it up.

Former New York Newsday reporter Jones was only four years old when the FBI burst into his family's Bronx apartment to arrest his parents: members of the violent, left-wing Weather Underground, they had spent the 1970s hiding from federal authorities. In fact, Jones recounts in his debut book, they had fallen in love while staying at the same safe house in the Catskills. Eleanor had become radicalized in 1968 while a law student at Columbia University; Jeff helped Dr. Timothy Leary, the LSD guru, escape from prison. Their radical roots went deep, as this engaging family history reveals. Both of Jones's maternal grandparents were Communist Party members; his grandfather pled the Fifth Amendment when House Committee on Un-American Activities grilled him in the 1950s. Jones's paternal grandfather had spent WWII in an army work camp as a conscientious objector. Jones effectively elucidates the personal dramas, often drawing on FBI files for background info. In giving his parents' story such completeness, however, he offers little hint of how fully their values were passed on to his own generation, giving the book's ending a somewhat abrupt feel. Strictly speaking, Jones's parents were in league with terrorists, but he infuses their politics with a crucial humanity that makes their path a little more understandable, perhaps even sympathetic.

Jones treats it all with sympathy and a sly irony. He has an exciting story to tell, and he tells it well.

Thai Jones combines a journalist's nose, an ethnographer's endurance, and a novelist's hand as he brings to life an array of memorable characters, each making his or her twisty way through the tempest of their times. The result is a finely crafted and expertly calibrated memoir of real literary merit that echoes down the decades as a fitting homage to those who lived their lives against the grain.

Red Diapers Times Two

It is quite a feat to tackle writing a book about your parents and grandparents without succumbing to sentimentality, or in some people's case, bitterness. Thai Jones succeeds in keeping an even-handed, slightly amused tone to his family story, and some family it is. His parents, Jeff Jones and Eleanor Raskin, were two members of the Weather Underground, and the author was himself born on the run, so to speak. His first memory is of the FBI hauling his parents away when they were finally busted and he was age four. I don't envy him that memory.

And prior to Jeff and Eleanor were their respective parents, radicals of the Old Left, with their own strong opinions, which didn't necessarily match up with those of their offspring. That inherent tension gives the story some of its punch.

Of course, the most dramatic part of the book is the tromp through the New Left, SDS, and Weatherman (later, the Weather Underground). Jones draws on family memories, other participants, and reliable sources, but there may not be a whole lot new here for anyone who has read other memoirs such as Bill Ayers' or seen the Weather Underground documentary. Still, he provides yet another perspective which helps us triangulate on that over-heated era.

My main cavel about the book is its scattershot time-line, which bounces back and forth between different family members and different years. No doubt, some of this is done for dramatic effect, but it undercuts one's ability to get a clear picture of the linear order of events. And the confusion is made worse by Jones' almost exclusive use of first names for the main family members. A little journalistic insertion of last names, now and then, might have kept me better on track.

When all is said and done, I couldn't shake the feeling, from Jones' account, that both of his parents had a screw loose in the judgment department. The author's mother succumbs to the more revolutionary than thou guilt-tripping of the Weatherpersons, and leaves her first husband and abandons her law degree. At the time, I'm sure, it seemed like the right thing to do, but when you get right down to it, she flipped and joined a cult.

Jones' father, one of the most macho gun-wavers of the Weatherman leadership, can't keep from buying stand-out-in-a-crowd used cars, all while living "underground" and trying to remain inconspicuous, of course. This recklessness is topped off by his growing dope plants on an apartment fire escape in Hoboken, apparently to make a little cash while on the lam. This, needless to say, catches the eyes of the authorities and they're on the run again.

All in all, A Radical Line is an entertaining read. Slight flaws and family quirks aside, it provides a compelling portrait of two and a half generations of rebels.

One of the best books I've ever read!

I read "A Radical Line" in a single weekend and it really was as advertised - a crash course in American protest movements. My parents lived through the sixties and they have bored me for years with stories from "back in the day". Reading this book - written by someone in my generation - showed me why that ancient history is still important today - maybe more than ever. The author tells the story through the people in his family, and when he describes the anger his parents felt because of American atrocities in Vietnam, it reminds me of the way I talk to my friends about the war in Iraq.

Making history a family matter

This is a wry, smart book. Jones cleaves historical and personal stories into an astonishing narrative -- one that spans a century of American power and protest. That he does so at all is impressive; that he does so without any navel-gazing self indulgence is a miraculous breath of fresh memoir air. Jones' book is a stark and often critical look at his own family line, as well as a brilliant contextualization of everything from moral outrage and political movements to sex, drugs and car chases.

as a current AP U.S. History student, i was trying to find the best study guide for the corse. Is it Princeton Review or Kaplan. That's a tough question and they are both different but equally helpful. It really does't matter which you buy. If you like history put into a "story" then go for PR. but if you learn better with material broken up, then go for Kaplan.

This book was excellent as a review source for the AP U.S. History test because of the innumerable facts and clearly formulated essay responses that were present on every page of this book. Truly a wonderful tool for studying, all important material is covered and each key term is fuly explained in depth with only the pertinent info included. Buy this book for the test, definetly better than Cliffsnotes.

Goldmine

This book is so well-written, I think if John Waters hadn't become a film director he would have made an even better author. This book is so funny, but it is also a goldmine. There are so many references to obscure and interesting movies, books...all sorts of things. I learned so much! I had never heard of the film "Christmas Evil" before, but read about it in the book and was delighted to find it on netflix! It was insane!!! What a gem!

You could literally keep a notepad to scribble down movies to rent, books to read and things to google while reading this book. Lots of fun to read, and tons more to discover after you are done.

John Waters is hilarious!

I just finished reading Crackpot last week, and it kept me entertained from beginning to end. I'm not an avid reader, so being able to get through any book is usually impossible for me, no matter what the length. Not only was the book nice and short, but John Waters really does know how to keep your attention. His writings are a great compliment to his films and I can't wait to read Shock Value! I love you, John!

Puff Piece (One Thing I Love: Crackpot)

Like all great wits, John Waters is a bona fide eccentric, and he generously shares with us his rich inner life. His obsessions with crime, fame, movies and all things camp pour out in a stream of writing that is as fluid as it is funny...and underneath the laughs lie a curious wisdom. I first read this in 1986; here are a few of my favorite bits...Number 34 in Waters' list of 101 things he hates: overly-familiar waiters-"Hi, my name is Bill. Can I take your order?" Momentarily stunned, I fantasize about pulling out a Denver Boot and strapping his ankle to the table leg. "Get up!" I scream. "What makes you think I want to know your name? I came here to EAT, not to make friends! Just give me eggs and bacon and hold the biography!" Number 77 from the list of 101 things he loves: convenience stores-"I trot in to the convenience store across the street, popularly known as the 'Death Dinette.' Everything is locked behind bulletproof glass; toilet paper, Chef Boyardi macaroni, even Spam. When the very nice clerks unlock the case and hand you a small bottle of Prell you almost feel like you're shopping at Tiffany's." And just in time for Christmas: "Of course, You-Know-Who was supposed to have been born on Christmas, but the real Holy Trinity is God the Father, The Son, and the Holy Santa Claus. You don't see fake Josephs and Marys in department stores asking kids what they want, do you? Face it, mangers are downwardly mobile." So buy a copy of this book and become a John Waters convert. Then, like any proper cult member, you can share with others your Leader's message: "Free Hairdos for the Poor."

Despite her apparent good health, in May 1997, Heffernan suffered a massive heart attack during a yoga class. Proximity to a Cambridge, Mass., hospital and the swift response of rescue workers saved her initially. Emergency double bypass surgery and the subsequent implantation of a defibrillator has allowed her to survive for the past five years. Surprisingly, Heffernan was relatively young (44), physically fit and a nonsmoker with low cholesterol who adhered to a nutritious diet when her heart failed her. The author's enforced period of inactivity forged links with Jack's children, who had formerly been distant from their father's new wife, and she became closer to her sisters. Although her heart has been severely damaged and a transplant may eventually be needed, Heffernan nicely describes how she has found peace of mind and a new pleasure in daily living because of this unexpected brush with death.

At the age of 44, Heffernan suffered a massive heart attack that resulted in cardiomyopathy and ventricular tachycardia, with only half her heart still functional. Only her quick recognition of her symptoms, prompt medical treatment, and the availability of specialized medical services and personnel saved her life. This engrossing account of her initial battle for survival shows the depths of human emotion and strength in times of crisis, for both the victim and her family. The struggle to make rational medical decisions, overcoming ICU- and medication-induced psychosis, the vital role of family support, and the emotional roller coaster of both patient and family are touchingly documented. The following year of convalescence, moving from beliefs of health to acceptance of disability, is emotively portrayed. Heffernan's fight to regain some quality of life for herself and her family will resonate with all persons dealing with chronic illness and inspire them to find their own blessings in life. Captivating

I was completely captivated by "An Arrow Through the Heart." Once I started reading I was hooked! I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. It was extremely well-written and I truly felt a connection with Deborah. As a heart attack survivor myself, I could completely relate to her struggle as I read her words with tear-filled eyes. She faced death and came out victorious, reassuring other women that even serious heart issues do not have to be a death sentence or define you. I look forward to her next book!

This was a very inspirational book for those of us who have lived through a debilitating illness and a different perspective on life for those who have not. It made me look at my world differently and appreciate where I am currently. The book was well-written and engaging. I have recommended it to many people.

Healing

I'm a critical care nurse, and what I find of compelling interest is not the just the nuts and bolts of survival and medical daring-do, but rather, the meaning of illness and healing. I believe that it is of the utmost importance that we understand and listen to the stories of individuals who have travelled to the edge, approached the threshold of life and death and returned to share with us. Living is more than physical survival, and Deborah does a lovely job of finding meaning in not just her physical state, but the emotional and spiritual aspects of living, healing, confronting death.
It's so easy, in my work environment, to get swept up by the physicality of it all: the techno;ogy, the life and death drama, the adrenaline rush, the the technical minutae of modern medicine. Not to say it isn't wonderful...it is , and challenging and (dare I say it?) fun as well. What can easily get lost, however, is the recognition that the person in that bed is a whole and independent person, with a life story and a life purpose of far greater magnitude than a stay, however long, in a critical care unit. The illness or accident pull the individual out of context, and can let us diminish them, all unawares.
It helps, of course, that Deborah is an elegant writer; her ability to weave bits and pieces of past and present together into a seamless narrative of her first year post-event feels whole and real. She's found a nice balance that allows the book to transcend the purely personal memmoir.
I think this is an important book on a number of levels: for Deborah, as a healing piece; for other women, as a wakeup call about a very real and undertreated health risk; for healthcare providers, as a means of engendering humility and empathy; for anyone interested in mind-body-spirit wholeness and the process of healing.

Teaches you the fundamentals, but isn't quite enough

This is essentially the Kaplan Fifth Edition LSAT book (2001-2003) with a different cover -- all of the content and practice tests are the same. This version is printed on brittle, recycled paper -- like what Princeton Review does.
The explanations for practice exams are solid and consistent, but they don't include a "fifth" experimental section, so the exams are 35 minutes shorter than the real LSAT. I found this book more helpful as an administrative brochure than a studying tool -- everything on how, where, and when to register for the LSAT/LSDAS services are in here, as well as some helpful guidelines on strengthening the overall law school application.
Kaplan's LSAT prep book is an effective priming tool to those interested in taking the exam, but it shouldn't be relied upon by itself. Being a horrible standardized test taker, I appreciated the full package of the book -- Kaplan devotes a quarter of the pages to test-taking strategies, another quarter on exam-day details and the law school application/admissions process, and the final half to practice tests. The book is written in a very clear and informative style that contains quite a few effective strategies for the "completely ignorant" LSAT student. Anyone who has no idea what the LSAT is all about will surely find this to be a great primer when starting a study plan. Yet, I have the feeling that their Kaplan prep course reserves most of the best tricks for those willing to fork over the cash.
Ultimately, I think the Kaplan book was a worthwhile investment but get the CD-less package instead. You're paying extra for the CD and I found it was completely worthless -- it frequently crashed on my Windows 2000 computer and I didn't even need it to study because using a CD to study doesn't simulate a real test-day experience. Kudos for the book, but the CD is nothing more than a wasted coaster.

Forget it buy the actual tests

Buy the actual tests instead of this product.
The Kaplan tests don't have the same feel as the
actual tests. You are wasting your money with this
product. True understanding of the LSAT comes only through careful self-analysis of the actual tests. As cruel as this sounds, if you need someone to explain the answers to you then you shouldn't consider taking this test for the answers to all the questions are readily attainable if you are given the right amount of time.

This book is absolutely phenominal. I used it and I must say that my score significantly rose. I was getting in the 130ish range and after completing this couse I am scoring in the 160s. This book gets into the minds of the LSAC and shows you to solve the problem from THEIR point of view instead of wasting time by meditating on a problem for minutes without a general process of thought.
