Great book to teach you the power of playing cards

This was a good book to teach you how to read tarot cards but with playing cards. Very interesting to read and was able to better understand how to use a regular deck of cards to a deck of the tarot cards. I was impressed with the details and knowledge to show you how to read them.

Singer-songwriter Joey Ramone, who cofounded the rock group the Ramones in 1974, died of lymphatic cancer at age 49 in 2001. Born Jeff Hyman in Manhattan, he grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, with low self-esteem and what is described as an obsessive compulsive disorder, but he soon escaped to Greenwich Village, where he became a punk pioneer. Commercial success was elusive. While the Ramones remained an underground band, they are regarded today as a huge influence on the entire punk rock movement. Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh (who formed his own band), recreates that electric era, striking all the right chords in this dynamic biography. With skillful writing, he finds Joey's musical roots in their dysfunctional family life. As they attempted to deal with their mother's divorce and remarriage, the accidental death of their stepfather, financial worries and neighborhood bullies, their interest in rock, drugs and far-out fashions escalated. Leigh (né Mitch Hyman) offers an insider’s perspective on the household in which brother Jeffrey grew up and of Jeffrey’s subsequent exploits in the Ramones (Jeffrey was Joey). Of recording with Phil Spector, Joey observed, “Phil would make us run through the song a thousand times . . . and then he’d get drunk,” start “stomping the floor, cursing . . . and that would be the end of the session.” As for Joey’s contentious relationship with tough-guy guitarist Johnny Ramone, Leigh quotes drummer Tommy Ramone: “Johnny liked Joey—as much as Johnny liked anybody,” which says much about the band’s inner workings. Leigh illuminates Joey’s mental health problems with his own memories, providing context for the struggle it was for Joey to assert himself. Revealing and Entertaining Memoir Weighed Down by a Bit Too Much Resentment

I will preface this review by saying I am not what you would call a huge Ramones fan. I know their music well and appreciate their tremendous influence on subsequent acts but I am by no means a fanatic. As such, this is the first full-length book I have read on the band or a member of the band, though I know there is much out there. One of the main reasons I decided to read this book was to hear firsthand of their role in the birth of punk in the '70s. I had read Legs McNeil's book on the history of punk and seen many documentaries that highlight the Ramones importance in this respect. I, however, came to know the Ramones long after the release of _Rock 'n' Roll High School_ and mediocre record after mediocre record. I wanted to experience and learn about the impact the early Ramones had on the music scene and the lasting influence of that impact. Mickey Leigh (and co-author Legs McNeil) do not disappoint in this respect. They do an excellent job of capturing the excitement of how Joey Ramone and his band built on the sound of the New York Dolls and Iggy and the Stooges to become the first true punk band. However, many before them have done this well.

One reason why I enjoy reading biographies of musicians is to get insight into the musician in their formative years, to find out what it is that inspired them. That is the second reason I decided to read this book. I figured Joey Ramone's brother could provide unique insight into what made Joey Ramone and the Ramones who they were. Again, here he did not disappoint. In fact, I would argue that the strongest part of this book are the scenes of Joey and Mickey (their names were actually Jeffrey and Mitchell Hyman then) growing up in the Forest Hills area of Queens. I was fascinated to learn what music and what song first got the Hyman brothers excited about music. Mickey provides a real insight into their home life, the dynamics of the family, their mutual growing obsession with music, and the multitude of health (both physical and psychological) issues that Joey struggled with before (and during) his life as a rock star. Up until this point, this is an exceptionally entertaining read.

However, once the reader gets to the point that Joey and The Ramones start to encounter success, things seem to change. Mickey is constantly making snide comments about the musical ability of the band and how lacking it is. He is quick to remind the reader--in not so subtle ways--that he is a more talented musician than the members of the band. In one instance, he discusses a contribution he made to a song but that was dropped because the guitar riff was too hard. There is simply far too much of this type of resentment scattered throughout the second half of the book. Micky may have good reason for this resentment. He did contribute to the writing process of several songs and help the Ramones in many ways and never really receive credit. However, the book began to make this reader feel uncomfortable. It began to feel like Micky was using the book to pay back anyone who had ever wronged him--no matter how slightly. This extends beyond just the Ramones and their inner family. But it is his depiction of the members of the Ramones that is so unsettling. If for no other reason, than the three core members are no longer alive to defend themselves. This reader kept wondering why he waited until they were gone to write this book. It feels very much like Mickey feels like he deserved the success Joey had. And, somehow, this book--at times--feels like another attempt to achieve that fame.

Having said that, there are many other points in the book where Mickey comes across as someone who genuinely loves his brother. The scenes toward the end of Joey's life are particularly touching. Plus, there is value in the story of how both brother's relationship is repeatedly strained and mended as one achieves the fame and success that both crave. So, with the caveats mentioned above, I will say that, although parts of it might lead to frustration, this is an entertaining and informative book that will appeal to most music fans--and especially to fans of the Ramones. Despite the flaws, the strength of this book is that Leigh and McNeil provide a first-hand (which is of course not objective) account of how a misfit overcame (and continued to overcome) challenge after challenge to become a legend and icon to millions of music fans--including some of the most influential and successful people in music today.

awesome SAT math practice

I bought this SAT math workbook for my daughter weeks before her SAT test. It is the exact one we were looking for. This book includes 2 comprehensive math tests, detailed answer explanations, strategies for multiple-choice and grid-in questions, and review of the top 100 math concepts. It prepared my daughter for the math she would see on the SAT. She used this book by following the instructions, first taking a practice test, becoming familiar with the SAT math section, doing the practice sets, testing again, and evaluating her strengths and weaknesses. Her favorite part of this book is how to prepare for the SAT. My daughter was exposed to SAT fundamentals from 9th grade when she enrolled in Beestar's online SAT program at hs.beestar.org. Its SAT math is free and only takes 20 minutes a week. But over time, the program has made a big difference. The exercises are designed for fundamental skills, and are excellent for the upcoming new SAT standards. With such accumulated skills over time, the final preparation becomes much smooth. It is more for checking weak spots and building confidence. Eventually my daughter's SAT score is probably the highest in her class. She attributes her top score to both early little by little accumulation and the final intensive preparation.

Great for adults too!

I am in my forties and planning on returning to school. I haven't done algebra or any kind of complicated math in years. This helps, the practice is good, and sometimes old dogs can remember new tricks. Lol.

In the most revealing study yet undertaken of compensation practices in the fields of business, law, medicine, higher education, teaching, and government, Derek Bok, renowned for his extensive writings on professional ethics, law, and labor relations, argues persuasively that the compensation paid to top executives, lawyers, and doctors cannot be justified, nor is there evidence that huge bonuses and other financial incentives motivate them to do better work. Moreover, Bok asserts, the lucrative rewards of Wall Street, the elite law firms, and the medical specialties act as a magnet to deprive poorly paid but vitally important teaching and public service professions of desperately needed talent.

Bok argues that as our economy becomes more complex, the demand for able, highly educated people increases constantly and takes on greater and greater importance. Losing our most talented individuals to the lure of high compensation will affect the very nature of health care, the progress of the economy, the effectiveness of public policy, the pursuit of justice, and the quality of education in America.

President Clinton's tax proposals to curb excessive executive pay now before Congress are only a first step toward reform. Bok, the dean of Harvard Law School, presents a fascinating, well-researched, and timely study of compensation practices in six professional categories--business, law, medicine, higher education, government, and teaching. While top compensation in the private sector has been increasing rapidly, there have been few gains in the public sector--government, churches, and schools. Conclusive evidence is presented to demonstrate how this has shifted the distribution of talent away from the public sector. Further, Bok argues that the high compensation paid to top managers, doctors, and lawyers is not warranted; nor do incentive schemes motivate improved performance. He analyzes a number of alternatives to remedy the skewed distribution of talent toward ever-increasing earnings in law, business, and medicine and calls for changes in public policies as well as in our values. Highly recommended.

A disappointingly superficial and inconclusive critique of US pay practices. Relying mainly on secondary sources and anecdotal evidence, former Harvard president Bok (Higher Learning, 1986, etc.) first surveys the widely variant financial rewards afforded by business, education, government, law, and medicine from the turn of the century to the present. Equity apart, he deplores the fact that differentials in earnings potential have lured America's best and brightest college grads away from careers in teaching and the federal civil service. Bok goes on the castigate attorneys, corporate executives, and physicians, among others, on grounds that their superior incomes aren't determined by supply/demand forces in genuinely free markets. While the author's concerns about comparable worth have obvious economic implications, he stops short of linking compensation norms to American competitiveness (or lack thereof) in international trade. Bok also fails to employ objective data or standards in his adversarial review of income. To make his essentially populist points, he depends largely on worst-case examples and pejorative phrases--``swollen paychecks,'' ``undeserved wealth,'' ``bloated compensation,'' etc. In some cases, Bok seems to ignore inconvenient realities: He's way off the mark, for instance, in his unattributed estimate of directorial pay. Nor does his canvass of pay for performance, stiffer taxation of high incomes, industrial policies, and other means to attract more talent into the public sector carry much conviction. In summation, in fact, he merely suggests America would be well advised to examine its values and priorities. A valuable and perceptive work

This book delves into a very critical aspect of current American society; namely, the exorbitant salaries of America's executives and high-level professionals, and the growing disparity between them and the rest of the people, especially the most underprivileged members of society. Although the findings cited in the book might suffer from methodological shortcomings, they are justified and confirmed by any person's observations of modern America. For instance, many of our corporate executives and lawyers own $1,000 suits, $60,000 cars, and have kids in private schools (not to mention enjoy $100 lunches on a daily basis) while there are countless homeless and welfare ridden persons who have very little mobility, regardless of work-ethic. There are clearly unjust differences in the amount of wealth and resources available to the most privileged members of American society and the poorest ones (also becoming known as the "under class"). This book is a valuable resource for anyone concerned with crucial societal issues that face the US in the years to come.

A Real "Who Cares" Sort of Book

While I bought this book some time ago, I just got around to reading it. A fan of Bok, you must wonder about why he wrote this book and why the publisher published it. Must have been "star struck". Talks about why lawyers make more than others and makes judgements about who is more valuable than who. Of course college professors and teachers come out on top--why not janitors and iron workers? I hauled this book around on several plane trips and was wishing I would lose it in the seat pocket.
This is a guy people would have listened to. He could have built an interesting and important model about executive pay and been instrumental in influencing how organizations value to top talent they have. The book needed a severe editing job. It shows that people you expect a lot from just don't come through consistently.

Back on the Reich Track

After last year's disappointing BARE BONES some of us who are Kathy Reich fans felt the series was going the way of the Kay Scarpetta books...downhill. But MONDAY MOURNING gives the series a needed bounce. It is definitely a fun summer read.
Reich returns her heroine to Montreal, which is a good move. Her forensic crime mysteries are richer and more interesting when set up North. She also tones down the romance, which is good, it simply is not her writing strength.
Why not five stars? The information about Carbon 14 dating was interesting but a bit too detailed. Also, the information about Stockholm syndrome was done to death...we know, we know.....too many Law and Order, or CSI shows. We know all this, you don't have to explain it to us. Plus, I had the mystery woman in Ryan's life figured out 100 pages before her identity was made known. It was WAY too obvious and cliche.
Finally, it is a bit unrealistic, and more than a little disappointing, to see smart, accomplished women taking such foolish chances - interjecting themselves into dangerous situations. Early in the book, the main character, Dr. Brennan describes "...Tinsel town has done another tap dance; the public has been conned into believing crime scene techs are detectives....this latest Hollywood myth needs a kick in the pants." I was encouraged and amused by this passage, and surprised when it forshadowed the rest of the plot.
All in all, readers who enjoy a good medical / sceintific mystery will enjoy this book.

Good Addition To Series

In this, the seventh book in the series, Tempe Brenan, forensic anthropologist is charged with identifying human bones found in the cellar of a pizza parlor in Montreal, Canada. Reichs is very good at character development and she continues to add depth to the characters in this outing. The plot is interesting and leads to a spectacular conclusion. There is an irresistible hook at the end of almost every chapter, so if you are going to put this book down, you'll have to do it mid-chapter. Some readers may find the technical forensic sections a little tedious, but I found them very enlightening. I prefer the books in this series that take place in Charlotte, North Carolina. Montreal seems rather dismal to me. But this is a good addition to the series and adds a lot of depth to the character Tempe Brenan.

Philippa Gregory is the author of several bestselling novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, and is a recognized authority on women’s history. Summer 1548

The girl, giggling and overexcited, was running in the sunlit garden, running away from her stepfather, but not so fast that he could not catch her. Her stepmother, seated in an arbor with Rosamund roses in bud all around her, caught sight of the fourteen-year-old girl and the handsome man chasing around the broad tree trunks on the smooth turf and smiled, determined to see only the best in both of them: the girl she was bringing up and the man she had adored for years.

He snatched at the hem of the girl's swinging gown and caught her up to him for a moment. "A forfeit!" he said, his dark face close to her flushed cheeks.

They both knew what the forfeit would be. Like quicksilver she slid from his grasp and dodged away, to the far side of an ornamental fountain with a broad circular bowl. Fat carp were swimming slowly in the water; Elizabeth's excited face was reflected in the surface as she leaned forward to taunt him.

"Can't catch me!"

" 'Course I can."

She leaned low so that he could see her small breasts at the top of the square-cut green gown. She felt his eyes on her and the color in her cheeks deepened. He watched, amused and aroused, as her neck flushed rosy pink.

"I can catch you any time I want to," he said, thinking of the chase of sex that ends in bed.

"Come on then!" she said, not knowing exactly what she was inviting, but knowing that she wanted to hear his feet pounding the grass behind her, sense his hands outstretched to grab at her; and, more than anything else, to feel his arms around her, pulling her against the fascinating contours of his body, the scratchy embroidery of his doublet against her cheek, the press of his thigh against her legs.

She gave a little scream and dashed away again down an allée of yew trees, where the Chelsea garden ran down to the river. The queen, smiling, looked up from her sewing and saw her beloved stepdaughter racing between the trees, her handsome husband a few easy strides behind. She looked down again at her sewing and did not see him catch Elizabeth, whirl her around, put her back to the red papery bark of the yew tree and clamp his hand over her half-open mouth.

Elizabeth's eyes blazed black with excitement, but she did not struggle. When he realized that she would not scream, he took his hand away and bent his dark head.

Elizabeth felt the smooth sweep of his moustache against her lips, smelled the heady scent of his hair, his skin. She closed her eyes and tipped back her head to offer her lips, her neck, her breasts to his mouth. When she felt his sharp teeth graze her skin, she was no longer a giggling child, she was a young woman in the heat of first desire.

Gently he loosened his grip on her waist, and his hand stole up the firmly boned stomacher to the neck of her gown, where he could slide a finger down inside her linen to touch her breasts. Her nipple was hard and aroused; when he rubbed it she gave a little mew of pleasure that made him laugh at the predictability of female desire, a deep chuckle in the back of his throat.

Elizabeth pressed herself against the length of his body, feeling his thigh push forward between her legs in reply. She had a sensation like an overwhelming curiosity. She longed to know what might happen next.

When he made a movement away from her, as if to release her, she wound her arms around his back and pulled him into her again. She felt rather than saw Tom Seymour's smile of pleasure at her culpability, as his mouth came down on hers again and his tongue licked, as delicate as a cat, against the side of her mouth. Torn between disgust and desire at the extraordinary sensation, she slid her own tongue to meet his and felt the terrible intimacy of a grown man's intrusive kiss.

All at once it was too much for her, and she shrank back from him, but he knew the rhythm of this dance which she had so lightheartedly invoked, and which would now beat through her very veins. He caught at the hem of her brocade skirt and pulled it up and up until he could get at her, sliding his practiced hand up her thighs, underneath her linen shift. Instinctively she clamped her legs together against his touch until he brushed, with calculated gentleness, the back of his hand on her hidden sex. At the teasing touch of his knuckles, she melted; he could feel her almost dissolve beneath him. She would have fallen if he had not had a firm arm around her waist, and he knew at that moment that he could have the king's own daughter, Princess Elizabeth, against a tree in the queen's garden. The girl was a virgin in name alone. In reality, she was little more than a whore.

A light step on the path made him quickly turn, dropping Elizabeth's gown and putting her behind him, out of sight. Anyone could read the tranced willingness on the girl's face; she was lost in her desire. He was afraid it was the queen, his wife, whose love for him was insulted every day that he seduced her ward under her very nose: the queen, who had been entrusted with the care of her stepdaughter the princess, Queen Katherine who had sat at Henry VIII's deathbed but dreamed of this man.

But it was not the queen who stood before him on the path. It was only a girl, a little girl of about nine years old, with big solemn dark eyes and a white Spanish cap tied under her chin. She carried two books strapped with bookseller's tape in her hand, and she regarded him with a cool objective interest, as if she had seen and understood everything.

"How now, sweetheart!" he exclaimed, falsely cheerful. "You gave me a start. I might have thought you a fairy, appearing so suddenly."

She frowned at his rapid, overloud speech, and then she replied, very slowly with a strong Spanish accent, "Forgive me, sir. My father told me to bring these books to Sir Thomas Seymour and they said you were in the garden."

She proffered the package of books, and Tom Seymour was forced to step forward and take them from her hands. "You're the bookseller's daughter," he said cheerfully. "The bookseller from Spain."

She bowed her head in assent, not taking her dark scrutiny from his face.

"What are you staring at, child?" he asked, conscious of Elizabeth, hastily rearranging her gown behind him.

"I was looking at you, sir, but I saw something most dreadful."

"What?" he demanded. For a moment he was afraid she would say that she had seen him with the Princess of England backed up against a tree like a common doxy, her skirt pulled up out of the way and his fingers dabbling at her purse.

"I saw a scaffold behind you," said the surprising child, and then turned and walked away as if she had completed her errand and there was nothing more for her to do in the sunlit garden.

Tom Seymour whirled back to Elizabeth, who was trying to comb her disordered hair with fingers that were still shaking with desire. At once she stretched out her arms to him, wanting more.

"Did you hear that?"

Elizabeth's eyes were slits of black. "No," she said silkily. "Did she say something?"

"She only said that she saw the scaffold behind me!" He was more shaken than he wanted to reveal. He tried for a bluff laugh, but it came out with a quaver of fear.

At the mention of the scaffold Elizabeth was suddenly alert. "Why?" she snapped. "Why should she say such a thing?"

"God knows," he said. "Stupid little witch. Probably mistook the word, she's foreign. Probably meant throne! Probably saw the throne behind me!"

But this joke was no more successful than his bluster, since in Elizabeth's imagination the throne and the scaffold were always close neighbors. The color drained from her face, leaving her sallow with fear.

"Who is she?" Her voice was sharp with nervousness. "Who is she working for?"

He turned to look for the child but the allée was empty. At the distant end of it he could see his wife walking slowly toward them, her back arched to carry the pregnant curve of her belly.

"Not a word," he said quickly to the girl at his side. "Not a word of this, sweetheart. You don't want to upset your stepmother."

He hardly needed to warn her. At the first hint of danger the girl was wary, smoothing her dress, conscious always that she must play a part, that she must survive. He could always rely on Elizabeth's duplicity. She might be only fourteen but she had been trained in deceit every day since the death of her mother, she had been an apprentice cheat for twelve long years. And she was the daughter of a liar -- two liars, he thought spitefully. She might feel desire; but she was always more alert to danger or ambition than to lust. He took her cold hand and led her up the allée toward his wife Katherine. He tried for a merry smile. "I caught her at last!" he called out.

He glanced around, he could not see the child anywhere. "We had such a race!" he cried.

I was that child, and that was the first sight I ever had of the Princess Elizabeth: damp with desire, panting with lust, rubbing herself like a cat against another woman's husband. But it was the first and last time I saw Tom Seymour. Within a year, he was dead on the scaffold charged with treason, and Elizabeth had denied three times having anything more than the most common acquaintance with him.

Life in the court of Queen Mary during the 1550s. Wow!

Very long and wordy, but also fascinating, informative of the the time in the 1550s, great character development. The second half of the book moves faster than the first half and then I couldn't put it down. I've read many Phillipa Gregory books and I really admire her attention to detail and the descriptive narrative that makes you feel like you are part of the story.

A Spy Who is a Fool in the Queen's Household

Caught in the political turmoil of the sixteenth century, when England was bitterly divided by religious differences, and "heretics" and traitors to the "cause" were liberally burned or beheaded, a young girl witnesses court life up close. Living in fear as a secret Jew converted to Christianity, Hannah is blackmailed into becoming a spy for the powerful Dudley family. Blessed with the gift of foretelling, she becomes young King Edward's Holy Fool, and, after his death, is passed into the household of his sister, Queen Mary, to continue her spying as the Queen's Fool. She is engaged to her cousin, an attractive and clever physician, while simultaneously falling for her blackmailer, Lord Dudley. To make matters even more complicated, she becomes an ardent fan of both Royal women, Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth, both of whom she is spying upon: Queen Mary for Robert Dudley and Princess Elizabeth for Queen Mary.

I loved Gregory's "The Other Boleyn Girl", but cannot rate this book in the same category. While the author writes well, this story gets bogged down in minutiae and too much liberty is taken with the actual historical characters. The words that come out of Queen Mary, Robert Dudley, or Princess Elizabeth just do not ring true. They sound like the author's imaginary projections, not the actual words. The dialogue lacks the authenticity of the historical details plastered all over the text and often interfering in the flow of the real story.

Hannah's relationship with her cousin and betrothed is well done. You can feel the passion slowly developing. In some way perhaps this book would have been better giving that relationship more attention rather than occasional updates. If you enjoy historical novels during this era, I recommend figures in Silkby Vanora Bennett, a story set during the reign of Charles II that focuses on the growth of the Silk trade and court life. Like Hannah, the main character is a fictional woman, a doctor, and like Hannah, striving to create a place for herself in this male-dominated society. The story is faster-paced, yet the historical events well portrayed.

interesting and well written

Very well written perspective from a young girl who doesn't really know what love is yet and the very real turmoil that often accompanies that war inside us. Very interesting to read of a unique perspective in that she was Jewish during that time period. Not something you come across every day. I love Phillipa Gregory's books and this was no exception.

Useful, more fodder for the choir

Though I'm agnostic concerning the `new physics' (of which Zukav is an early advocate) I found this book to be very readable, almost simple. There is much for the choir here: after some short praise for science as a valuable tool `for the five senses' he jumps directly into `the science of the soul which is not limited to the five senses.' There is no explanation or argument here - maybe he does that in other books - and the reader is just expected to follow along. For those of us who don't follow along there is still good stuff here. His ideas concerning choice and responsibility are excellent as are his encouragements for self-understanding.

Still, though, there are such obvious and glaring inconsistencies that I think I must have missed something. Zukav takes an entire chapter, for example, to explain that you should give heed to you `inner landscape' and if something doesn't feel `right' or `good' then you shouldn't do it. (Horrible advice, I think. Feelings should be only one component of a decision and have been often known to lie.) This seems to be a recipe for a cloistered life, never moving out from what is comfortable. In later chapters he writes about how frightening it can be to move out of our comfort zones when our feelings are so at odds with our desires... I suppose this can be resolved with the New Age mantras that `There is no real good or bad,' or `There is no reality - it is all perception.'

All of the common themes are here - harmony, attention, attraction, the primacy of feelings - nothing new to the self-help reader but the `homey' spin and usefulness for reflection make it better than most.
