McMurtry's latest skips through western lore with a wry smile. Marie Antoinette "Nellie" Courtright and her brother, Jackson, bereft of family after their Virginia clan dies off one by one, arrive in Rita Blanca in 1876, in what would become the Oklahoma Panhandle, to remake themselves. Jackson is made a deputy sheriff and Nellie takes over the telegraph office. In short order, Jackson shoots down an entire gang of outlaws, and Nellie promptly writes it up to launch a lucrative literary career. Other adventures await: she becomes manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, boldly faces down Jesse James's attempt to rob her and witnesses the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. She becomes mayor of Rita Blanca, a mother of six and, later, friends with Lillian Gish and William B. Mayer. Beautiful and sexually insatiable, Nellie is a witty, sophisticated, accomplished, cunning, impudent and highly improbable woman—more than a match for any man she meets, which isn't saying much, since they're all idiots. She also is little more than a reworking of several previous McMurtry heroines, especially The Berrybender Narratives' Tasmin. This tale is contrived, episodic and lacks cohesion, and its constant comedy is self-conscious. But most readers won't be able to help cracking a smile over McMurtry's 38th book, as purposely over-the-top as an episode of South Park. (June)

Annie Potts lends her accent and dry, frank delivery to bring to life a story that was probably better in the telling than in the reading. When you're a captive audience (traffic to and from work), you are a lot more forgiving of farfetched plots.
Some have criticized this book as having no plot. But this is a fictional autobiography. It goes with the flow of Nellie's life. Lives don't usually follow the dramatic pacing of fiction. True, the story is a bit contrived, but that's what makes it interesting, often humorous. It was certainly possible that Nellie had met many of the characters that she met. Agreed, it wasn't always plausible.
Mc Murtry chooses the very eventful (in wild west lore) years of 1876 and 1881 on which to focus much of Nellie's experiences. A bit of a history buff, I found myself checking into historical events that didn't quite seem to line up with Nellie's story (for instance, Buffalo Bill's show actually began in 1883, not 1881 when Nellie left Nebraska, the show already supposedly in full swing, and Dodge City wasn't a ghost town when Nellie passed through it that same year), but this is a fictitious autobiography. When I tell my story someday, my memory probably won't be accurate, either. I'll allow the fictitious Nellie her incorrect memories. Even her embellishments.

An Empty Desuetude

Pound for pound, few writers can compare with Larry McMurtry. The Pulitzer Prize winner has penned several contempary classics--among them, 'Terms of Endearment', 'The Last Picture Show', and the epic 'Lonesome Dove'.
So it's beyond disappointment when a writer as talented as McMurtry spits out a contrived, one-dimensional shell of a novel. And that's being kind to TELEGRAPH DAYS, McMurtry's "alleged" spoof of the cheap dime store novels of the 19th Century. This is a Western dominated by unimagination; by the "adventures" of Nellie Courtright, a young woman who roams the frontier, subsequently rubbing elbows with all of the famous--and infamous--icons: Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, Jesse James, the Earp brothers, Doc Holliday, General William Sherman, Billy the Kid, to name but a paltry few.
Setting aside such a titanic suspension of disbelief, this is a book whose author blatantly goes through the motions--this is a book penned for nothing more than a contractual obligation to a publisher. There is no development, no depth, no dire conflict--no feeling. It's a rambling story that never sets a pace and ends with a whimpering yawn. . .that ends with nary an afterthought.
What's most frustrating is the fact had TELEGRAPH DAYS been written by an unknown, it never would have seen the light of day--or it would have been self-published. And that would do even more of a disservice to self-publishing.

Funny, dramatic, one of his best

Possibly his best work since Lonesome Dove and definitely since Boone's Lick. Reading McMurtry is like hearing a yarn on the back porch of a western ranch-house by a master story teller. Larry uses a precise balance of outrageous situations and humor, romance and randy sex, tragedy and drama, comforting predictability and suspenseful surprises with the most compelling and interesting characters. The plot flows in seemless cronology spanning most of the life of our heroine, Nellie Courtright. McMurtry's ability to speak from a woman's perspective always leaves me in awe as to how a heterosexual man can do such a thing with convincing believability.
