Twenty-six-year-old Tabitha Knight, the heroine of this sexy page-turner by Tyree (For the Love of Money), doesn't hold down a steady job-she doesn't need to, because she has a string of superrich celebrity boyfriends to help her out. These are the kinds of relationships that Tabitha likes best-plenty of glamour and wining and dining, with no strings attached. Within three weeks of moving to Las Vegas, she has made two new conquests, a former heavyweight boxer and a basketball star. Each day, and with each new relationship, Tabitha turns to her diary, now 13 volumes long, to record the details of her encounters. Tabitha is approached by private investigator Sylvia Green, who wants Tabitha to "get close" to a famous actor suspected of molesting girls and to record whatever information she gets about his crimes in her diary. The operation is being funded by a rich banker who wants justice for his daughter, one of the actor's victims, and Tabitha stands to make six figures. She initially balks at the idea of making her diary public. But she also wants to be able to help out her three foster sisters, Janet, Patrice and Marisol, who are struggling with marriages, money problems, illnesses and brutish boyfriends. And in any case, perhaps it would be worth it just to see the molester in jail. Tabitha is wonderfully levelheaded and sharp, and is surrounded by equally colorful, if less well-developed, characters. The sloppy plotting leaves loose ends, but the unusual premise will easily capture readers' attention.

Missing Entries
By Nicole McCurty
Tabitha Knight is a woman looking for love in all the wrong places in Omar Tyree's latest novel, Diary of a Groupie. Tabitha (aka Toni and a host of other aliases) is a twenty-six year old woman who is supported by the wealthy men in her life. She keeps track of her many escapades with her lovers in her diary. Because of her youthful appearance and ability to charm men, Tabitha is contacted by a private investigator to help bring down a powerful man with a weakness for underage girls. This mission not only puts her life in jeopardy but the lives of the people surrounding her. Tabitha's only salvation may be the one thing she covets most, her diary.
I loved the premise of this book and was looking forward to reading the diary entries of the main character. Unfortunately, the diary entries were few and not that detailed. I was left wondering how the diary ended up being the central theme of the book. Tabitha seemed to be a smart woman who sometimes made bad choices. Some back story would have been helpful in understanding her actions. It would have also provided some insight into her relationship with her foster sisters whose characters were not very developed and did not seem to add to the story.
All in all, Diary of a Groupie was a fast-paced novel that kept me reading to find out if Tabitha was going to land on her feet.

No One Is Going To Break The Lock Trying To Read This
By Ysis
I think this book started out as a good idea, but who knows what it fell victim to in the process of editing and publishing. Mr. Tyree, much like another favorite writer of mine has a wonderful gift for writing from the female point of view and here again did it well. I guess it would have helped if there had been some story to go along with it,though. I appreciated the sensitivity the author tried to inject into his main character, Tabitha, but it didn't work. The other characters were never involved in the story enough to get to know them. There was a lot going on, but the reader was never let in on it. The plot "attempted" to be suspenseful, but whimpered out at just plain confusing. There were other characters who were only brought into the story at the very end of the book, which made it seem like a rush job. There was also a sad attempt at a bit of profoundness, but that failed as well because we didn't know anything or enough about the characters to know the degrees of good or evil within them. The book tried to come off as some kind of chiller-thriller, but it didn't. I think supermarket checkout trash is the best that this can be dubbed. It fell so short of what I'm used to having come from this author. I think Mr. Tyree's forte is his ability to write about Black culture, love, and spirit. This book had nothing whatsoever to do with any of that.

Illegal Tender: Gold, Greed, and the Mystery of the Lost 1933 Double Eagle, by David Tripp

It is one of America's treasures -- the most valuable ounce of gold in the world, the celebrated, the fabled, the infamous 1933 double eagle. It shouldn't even exist but it does, and its astonishing, true adventures read like "a composite of The Lord of the Rings and The Maltese Falcon" (The New York Times). Illegal to own and coveted all the more, it has been sought with passion by men of wealth and with steely persistence by the United States government for more than a half century.
In 1905, at the height of the exuberant Gilded Age, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned America's greatest sculptor, Augustus Saint- Gaudens -- as he battled in vain for his life -- to create what became America's most beautiful coin. In 1933 the hopes of America dimmed in the darkness of the Great Depression, and gold -- the nation's lifeblood -- hemorrhaged from the financial system. As the economy teetered on the brink of total collapse, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in his first act as president, assumed wartime powers while the nation was at peace and in a "swift, staccato action" unprecedented in United States history recalled all gold and banned its private ownership.
But the United States Mint continued, quite legally, to strike nearly a half million 1933 double eagles that were never issued and were deemed illegal to own. In 1937, along with countless millions of other gold coins, they were melted down into faceless gold bars and sent to Fort Knox. The government thought they had destroyed them all -- but they were wrong.
A few escaped, purloined in a crime -- an inside job -- that wasn't discovered until 1944. Then, the fugitive 1933 double eagles became the focus of a relentless Secret Service investigation spearheaded by the man who had put away Al Capone. All the coins that could be found were seized and destroyed. But one was beyond their reach, in a king's collection in Egypt, where it survived a world war, a revolution, and a coup, only to be lost again.
In 1996, more than forty years later, in a dramatic sting operation set up by a Secret Service informant at the Waldorf-Astoria, an English and an American coin dealer were arrested with a 1933 double eagle which, after years of litigation, was sold in July 2002 to an anonymous buyer for more than $7.5 million in a record-shattering auction. But was it the only one? The lost one?
Illegal Tender, revealing information available for the first time, tells a riveting tale of American history, liberally spiced with greed, intrigue, deception, and controversy as it follows the once secret odyssey of this fabulous golden object through the decades. With its cast of kings, presidents, government agents, shadowy dealers, and crooks, Illegal Tender will keep readers guessing about this incomparable disk of gold -- the coin that shouldn't be and almost wasn't -- until the very end.

From Publishers Weekly
In July 2002, a very rare U.S. gold Double Eagle coin sold for a record $7,590,020 at Sotheby's, making it by far the most valuable coin in the world. First-time author Tripp, former head of Sotheby's coin department, traces the peripatetic career of this Double Eagle, minted in 1933. FDR took the U.S. off the gold standard soon after a million $20 Double Eagles were minted. Never circulated, the coins were melted into gold bricks —save for two sent to the Smithsonian. Or such was the belief. In fact, mint workers purloined several Double Eagles, which were eventually seized by the Secret Service—all except one. Over the next 60 years, it was illicitly traded by various shady coin merchants and finally retrieved in 1996 during a much publicized sting at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The coin later spent time in a vault at the World Trade Center, but was removed just a month before the September 11 attacks. Several courtroom skirmishes later, the federal government finally allowed the gold coin to be auctioned at Sotheby's. Tripp's entertaining narrative is made more so by the many dramatic, sometimes nefarious characters of the coin trade, whom he paints in all their seediness. But covetous human nature—which always makes for an interesting read—stands center stage. B&w photos.

Here is a strange tale concerning the 1933 U.S. $20 gold coin. Legally speaking, the author should not have found any story about the "double eagle," as the coin is called in the jargon of numismatics, for the 1933 minting never entered circulation and was melted down in adherence to New Deal strictures prohibiting private hoards of gold. But somebody at the Philadelphia Mint absconded with a handful of 1933 double eagles, one of which surfaced 70 years later at an auction for which the author served as a consultant. That job inspired Tripp to research the history of the coin. Tripp initially recounts the genesis of the coin's design, executed by famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt. He continues by describing its physical minting and arrives at his crucial factual sources, periodic Secret Service investigations into the pilferage of the coins. Containing multiple seductions, including gold, the obsessive aspect of collecting, and pure mystery, Tripp's able debut might be a sleeper. Gilbert Taylor

Review
"Illegal Tender is an excellent read -- the first book I've ever read where the protagonist is a coin, the 1933 double eagle. It's a first-rate adventure story, and I was instantly hooked. Anyone who as a kid dug for treasure in his backyard will love this book. It made me want to get my metal detector out of the closet and go on a quest of my own." (Ben Mezrich, author of the New York Times bestseller Bringing Down the House)

"A solid-gold spellbinder. David Tripp's Illegal Tender has all the elements of a classic thriller -- foreign intrigue with Egyptian royalty and American presidents, a government sting, a rare object with a multimillion-dollar price tag -- and most amazing of all, the story he so deftly weaves together is all true." (Linda Fairstein, author of the New York Times bestseller The Kills)

"Dazzling history....Tripp compellingly unravels the mystery behind the rarest of rare coins. Entertaining and illuminating!" (Neal Bascomb, author of The Perfect Mile and Higher)

"I was dazzled and mesmerized by this wonderful, exciting story. The oddballs and villains who populate the world of numismatics -- King Farouk most notably among them--are matched only for interest by the thin-lipped zealots who, for decades, have tried to track down the missing gold coins that lie at the heart of this extraordinary tale. David Tripp has added vaults-full of absorbing details, and in living color, to the ancient notion that the love of money -- or coin -- is the root of all evil." (Simon Winchester author of Krakatoa and The Professor and the Madman)

“The definitive history” (The New York Times)

“Meticulous research adds a stamp of authenticity to what unspools like a Hollywood Blockbuster.” (Entertainment Weekly)

“Exciting reading....A true-life thriller.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Tripp's entertaining narrative is made more so by the many dramatic, sometimes nefarious characters of the coin trade, whom he paints in all their seediness. But covetous human nature—which always makes for an interesting read—stands center stage.” (Publishers Weekly)

"Exhaustively researched...This engaging record of an important numismatic saga has the suspense of a whodunit.” (Library Journal)

“More like an Agatha Christie mystery than a history book…
an enthralling, convincing and, best of all, page turning account” (ANS Magazine)

“The book delivers. It reads like a historical thriller… Informative and provocative.” (Numismatist)

A riveting, well written adventure
By Susanna Hutcheson
I'm not a coin collector. There are one or two coins I'd love to own. And I do own a few lovely ones. I say this so you'll know I'm not a member of the society of coin collectors --- that closed society of people who have their own vocabulary and ways of doing business.

But I wanted to read this book because I became interested in why Roosevelt the second opted to steal gold from the American public, making it illegal. I also was enchanted with this coin that Roosevelt the First wanted so badly. He wanted it to not contain the motto, "In God We Trust" because he believed in separation of church and state. So the story begins in 1907.

Well, I got much more from this book than I bargained for. To begin with, it's written wonderfully well. If you remember the old Dragnet radio and television shows, you'll recall how Joe Friday always said, "It was Tuesday, March 1 in Los Angeles. It was raining. ETC." It drew you in. You could picture it, get a feel for it. Well, Tripp does that in this book. He accurately tells the reader when the action takes place --- sometimes including the exact time. He often tells what the weather was like that day.

The book is exceedingly well documented. It is a true historical drama and mystery that, even today, is not really solved. All but one of these lovely coins are illegal. Yet we have reason to believe others exist --- somewhere.

You'll enter the rather mysterious world of the true coin collector and dealer. You'll be thrilled at what you find. You'll meet people of greed. Just to hold this illegal coin, this beautiful, magnificent piece of history, must be the thrill of a lifetime. Yet few people have done so or ever will.

You'll follow the coin from the mint to the final auction that makes this one coin legal (the others, if there are others, are illegal.)

This is a fascinating book and I recommend it highly.

A Prosaic Tome That is a Very Interesting Read
By Scott Barman
As with any thriller, the book opens with the background and history of the our protagonist, in this case, the Saint-Gaudens $20 Double Eagle. Tripp repeats the well known history of how President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to extend the gilded age and update the design of US coinage. Roosevelt thought the design of the Mint's Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber's were bland and not fitting of a great nation. Tripp reproduces reports of conversations and letters from Roosevelt to Barber and other US Mint officials demanding they follow the instructions of sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, as to how the coin would be minted. If you have not heard the details of this history, the first chapter is a must read.

From the history of the rise of the Saint-Gaudens $20 Double Eagle, Tripp then talks about its demise. With the country in the throes of the Great Depression and the country revolting against President Herbert Hoover at the polls, Tripp discusses the tension between Hoover and the transition team of Franklin D. Roosevelt. While the country was experience a near total economic collapse, Tripp writes how FDR did not want to do anything that would give Hoover credit for doing anything before the March, 1933 inauguration.

Hours after FDR's inauguration, the Senate approved the appointment of William H. Woodin as the Secretary of the Treasury. Woodin worked tirelessly with the Hoover administration to try to stop the damage. Tripp paints a great word picture as to how Woodin and FDR created a policy that helped the country pull out of the depression.

One of the problem was the amount of gold leaving the United States and being used for overseas trade. More gold was leaving the Treasury than they were taking in. At Woodin's urging, FDR signed an executive order recalling all privately held gold. As this executive order goes through many updates, Tripp brings us inside the Philadelphia Mint facilities as they continue to mint 1933 $20 Double Eagles. Tripp puts us right in the Mint and traces the path of these gold beauties.

With the order to melt these coins in 1934, the mystery begins. Tripp weaves the story in true mystery novel style following the trail of several of these coins as they leave the Mint. This includes the one coin with a legal export receipt that was shipped to King Farouk of Egypt. Tripp' coverage of the "Palace Collections of Egypt" or King Farouk's by the Egyptian government (website in English) is a classic twist of capitalism and greed meeting politics.

The book bogs down a bit starting in the late 1950s as the trail for all of the Double Eagles gets cold and the various law suits are settled. The story picks up again with the discovery of the Farouk coin. Tripp follows the trail from its consignment in England through the seizure in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City by the United States Secret Service. From there, the book reads like an episode of Law and Order leading up to the settlement and auction of this one-of-a-kind coin.

The only thing that makes this only a four-star book is that Tripp's prosaic tome makes this composition a somewhat arduous read. One may require a dictionary close at hand to fully understand the lexicon he uses. If nothing else, the book did help improve my vocabulary. Otherwise, Illegal Tender is a wonderful book to read and better than most mystery novels because it is true!

Illegal Tender won the 2005 Book of the Year award from the Numismatic Literary Guild.

Reads like a novel but this one is a true story!!!
By Paul Tognetti
If you are a fan of novels like "Topaz" and "The Maltese Falcon" then you are bound to enjoy David Tripp's "Illegal Tender: Gold, Greed and the Mystery of the Lost 1933 Double Eagle". But this is not fiction. Rather it is a true story spanning more than 70 years and starring of all things a $20 gold coin!!!

You see when Franklin Roosevelt took the country off the gold standard immediately after his inauguration in 1933, he ordered that all gold coins in circulation be returned to the government. It was a monumental task of course but most patriotic Americans voluntarily complied. Likewise, any gold coins that had been minted and not yet circulated were also ordered to be destroyed. In early 1933, more than 445,000 double eagle coins had been struck by the U.S. Mint. Somehow, a tiny quantity of these coins managed to see the light of day. And this is what "Illegal Tender" is all about. You'll learn how these coins managed to escape the clutches of the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia and all about the individual who was responsible. It is equally fascinating to read about those collectors who were able to obtain a rare 1933 "double eagle". For most of these folks the "double eagle" turned out to be an albatross. Be careful what you wish for!!! And as it became known that a quantity of these "illegal" coins had somehow fallen into the hands of collectors, David Tripp chronicles the Herculean efforts of the Secret Service to retreive them. Pretty compelling stuff!!!! Along the way you'll also be introduced to a number of coin dealers, lawyers and other assorted charactors who also play a role in this intriguing tale. Just what was it about these coins that was causing such a commotion?

"Illegal Tender" gets off to a fast start and I found myself hooked right away. However, I thought the story lost a bit of momentum over the final few chapters. Nevertheless this is a well written book that certainly deserves your attention. Recommended.

weird clues
By Deanna J. Marquart
Acrostics are my favorite category of word puzzle, and I am starting to feel worried that new acrostics books will be even fewer and farther between than they are now. If that were not the case, I probably would skip these acrostics from Thomas Middleton. If you haven't memorized Shakespeare (including the sonnets) and are not familiar with other European literature from before the 19th century. you may find yourself turning to the solutions page or looking stuff up on the Internet more than you would like. It's embarrassing to admit, but that is definitely my experience. I also find that many of Middleton's clues refer to usages that are at best obscure -- i.e., clues and solutions I would never link up even when I know what the answer is. Takes some of the fun out of working acrostics.

From Publishers Weekly
Those familiar with Volk's mordantly witty voice ( White Light ) will find her talent reconfirmed in some of these 15 stories exploring the various permutations of love. Most set in urban environments, the stories concern nice people trying to solve the mysteries of human relationships. The narrator of "Blue Light" is in love with an artist whose basement studio is bathed in blue light. Her husband, whom she also loves, exists in "clear light"; their different worlds are both necessary to her. In the best tales, women protagonists strive to connect themselves to strong, vital emotions and permanent relationships; several explore the dynamics of family relations in which guilt plays a prominent part. The narrator of the title story finds that Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings suggest links to the artist's life, connections which she herself lacks. In "Which Is Better?," a wife and mother obsessively asks herself that question relating to her family's behavior; even in bed with her husband, she discovers that doing the right thing is fake, doing the wrong thing is right. Some selections, including the three stories narrated by Letty in a voice edgy with neurosis, are overdone and grating. On the whole, however, there are enough satisfying stories here to make the collection a success.

From Library Journal
Short story writing is a demanding art form. The writer must convey a universe of ideas in a few pages. In sparsely worded conversations, Volk conveys the intensity of life for the modern urban woman. Marriage, love, friendship, and families are examined with irony and humor. In "Mystery Salad," Letty visits her aunt Ida, a wonderfully eccentric, cranky old lady. "Seams," a moving standout, is a story about friendship, betrayal, and recovery. In "Which Is Better?" a wife and mother struggle with whether to be told the truth or treated with kindness. Recommended for large public libraries.

"There's an old saying in Tennessee -- I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee -- that says, fool me once, shame on -- shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again."
With signature remarks like these, it's hardly surprising that George W. Bush's malapropisms have become renowned around the world. Editions of Bushisms have become bestsellers in Germany, France, and Italy, and they remain as popular in the United States as ever. Jacob Weisberg, faithful scribe, here presents the best of the latest crop:
"There's only one person who hugs the mothers and the widows, the wives and the kids upon the death of their loved one. Others hug but having committed the troops, I've got an additional responsibility to hug and that's me and I know what it's like."
"I'm the master of low expectations."
"First, let me make it very clear, poor people aren't necessarily killers. Just because you happen to be not rich doesn't mean you're willing to kill."

From Publishers Weekly
As Franken gleefully points out, Slate editor Weisberg has found a true gravy train, discovering enough previously uncollected nonsensical utterances by President Bush to fill a third volume. The president may have begun watching what he says since the publication of the first two volumes; Weisberg has to return to the 2000 campaign trail to fill out this collection. At least one statement, substituting "plowed" for "proud," raises the question of a presidential speech impediment, but that excuse won't get the self-proclaimed "master of low expectations" out of any of the other verbal missteps recorded here for posterity.

Introduction

This year, Bushisms went global. As the ramp up to the Gulf War accelerated through the summer and fall of 2002, our syntactically challenged president did nothing to disguise his disdain for the views of those countries known in his father's day as "the allies." The nations of Europe responded to this insult in kind -- by buying my book.

In the United States, this series has attempted to bridge the divide between Bush detractors (who laugh at him) and Bush supporters (who can laugh with him). All remain welcome. But there's no hiding that the recent vogue for Bushisms in ol' Europe is primarily an expression of hostility toward Bush II and Gulf War II. Having been informed just how little their opinions matter inside the White House, members of the European Community comfort themselves with the notion that its current occupant is -- let us not mince words -- a semiliterate moron.

That is not to say that the world scorns Bush in a uniform manner. Though the feeling that Bush is a fool is common throughout Europe, the cadences vary from country to country. In Great Britain, where Bushisms supply fodder for a seemingly endless number of newspaper columnists, the notion of an American leader who lacks fluency in English is taken as vastly amusing. The British see Bush as a hip-shooting cowboy, but somehow a comic one -- Dr. Strangelove, yes, but with some Bart Simpson thrown in. Having survived the Reagan-Thatcher romance, they are not unduly alarmed.

The French, by comparison, seethe. They take le président américain for a corporate lackey, an ignorant imperialist, and a Texan religious fanatic. And they blame all of us for hiring him. In this joyless spirit, a well-known French publisher agreed to buy the translation rights to George W. Bushisms, then phoned back to say he would not be offering payment after all, as he had found the same material for free on an American website (mine!). I have been filling Evian bottles with tap water ever since and serving it to my guests. So far, no one has noticed any difference.

As for the Germans, they appear alternately amused and horrified. Voll daneben, Mr. President! (Well Said, Mr. President) presents itself as both a joke book and a conclusive indictment. During the war, it shared Deutsch bestseller status with Bob Woodward's Amerika im Krieg (Bush at War), which presumably sold to more Rumsfeld-friendly readers. Much as I appreciate the sales, there is something intrinsically hilarious about translating these nuggets -- and even more hilarious about rendering them into German. Most read as if unsuccessfully translated from German in the first place. Which really came first: "Meine Aussenpolitik wird ausgewogen sein" or "I will have a foreign-handed foreign policy"?

All of these Bushisms are previously uncollected, but in a break with previous practice, not all of them are new -- uttered in the past year. While pulling together a 2004 George W. Bushisms Calendar (available near the bookstore table where you are Frenchily reading this without intending to buy), my helper David Newman unearthed some older gems that somehow evaded previous anthologizing.

This ongoing project has given me a paradoxical interest in both Bush bashing (foreign sales!) and Bush's reelection (volumes IV, V, and VI!). I continue to ignore such incentives and simply offer up what I find.

Foreword

by Al Franken

Along with a whole pack of other journalists, Jacob Weisberg covered Governor George W. Bush during the long months of the 2000 presidential campaign. Every single one of those journalists heard Bush make one stupid remark after another, day after day:

"I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family."

"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."

"They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it's some kind of federal program."

Yet it was Weisberg alone who understood the commercial potential for collecting these idiotic remarks in the form of a small trade paperback book, the kind that could be kept by the toilet, and picked up now and then for a few moments of distraction and some surefire laughs.

This is the third in the series. Fortunately, for Weisberg, the president continues to have problems either forming ideas in his head or expressing those ideas when he opens his mouth. And so the Bushisms series has become quite the gravy train for Weisberg, a dream come true for any political writer, because it actually involves no writing.

In fact, it seems, I am the only one doing any writing for this book at all. And yet, when Weisberg puts together his curriculum vitae, it will include three international bestsellers. Yes, these books are popular not only in the United States -- and in places like Germany, France, and Italy, where Bush is considered an out-of-control cowboy -- but also in countries that made up the Coalition of the Willing against Iraq. Countries like England, Poland, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands.

And, as an American, that worries me to some extent. It is one thing to have the rest of the world believe that our president cannot be trusted. It is quite another for them to think he is stupid.

Because he is not. It has taken me some time to come to this point of view. You see, facility with language is only one aspect of intelligence. Bush, as I have come to appreciate, is a shrewd, if dishonest, politician who surrounds himself with like-minded advisers.

"Compassionate Conservatism." "By far a vast majority of my tax cuts go to those at the bottom." "No Child Left Behind" -- the most ironically named piece of legislation since the 1942 "Japanese Family Leave Act." All these in their way are as funny as any of the malapropisms in this volume.

And there may even be some method to Bush's seeming stupidity. Take, for example, when he told us during the 2000 campaign that he doesn't mind being "misunderestimated." Sure, this sounded crazily dumb. But maybe in his own way he was outsmarting us all. Maybe by "misunderestimated," he meant that he doesn't mind being underestimated for the wrong reason. It was okay that we thought he was stupid. Hell, that lowered expectations for the debates. What we were really underestimating was his capacity to fool us.

Take another example. "Subliminable." Remember how during the campaign he said "subliminable" four times after being asked whether a Republican ad had used the word "rats" subliminally? Maybe by saying "subliminable" so many times, Bush was himself using a subtle subliminal technique to give people the unconscious message that he was "able" to be president. "Subliminable...subliming-able...subliminably I am "able" to be president." Got it?

So, go ahead. Laugh at the dumb things President Bush has said over the past year or so. But don't be fooled. He's less stupid than you think.

Straight From the Horse's Mouse
By Edwin C. Pauzer
After reading this short book of Bushisms, it's hard to believe that the President of the United States could have so many neurons and synapses misfiring in his noggin. After all, this is the man who has his finger on the button, that's if he can remember the code, or recite it correctly.

This is the man who followed his mother's suggestion to always use a thesaurus so he would never use the same word twice. It's unfortunate he could not recognize a homonym and instead wrote, "The lacerates came streaming down her face." (It makes you wonder how Mr. Shortcircuit could have ever gotten into Yale without having had his grandfather on its board of trustees.)

I have given this only three stars because the calendar of Bushisms offers far more verbal stumblings and gaffes than this provides--365 to be exact. At only eighty-three pages, it is funny but does not contain the best of Bush, the bonehead. Even though I paid very little, I don't think it was worth the S & H.

This book is neither for republicans, nor Bush suppporters, nor English teachers. (Yes, I know.)

As our president said, "I think if you know what you believe, it makes it a lot easier to answer querstions. I can't answer your question."

You just can't make this stuff up!

And this is straight from the horse's mouse.

Don't know whether to laugh or cry
By A Customer
Make no mistake about it. Apart from a few flubs, this is not a book of mere malapropisms, nor would the first-rate journalist Jacob Weisberg have compiled it if that's all it amounted to.
No, to the careful reader, this book offers insight into the frighteningly simple mind (and shallow character) now in charge of decisionmaking on vital matters of war, diplomacy, the economy and the environment.
For example, is this a man who cares to learn anything about environmental protection in the Arctic?
..."the explorationists are willing to only move equipment during the winter, which means they'll be on ice roads, and remove the equipment as the ice begins to melt, so that the fragile tundra is protected."
Sure, you'll laugh, and laugh hard, but the question all Americans should ponder after reading this book is: how did someone of this caliber come to power in the world's greatest meritocracy? Where is the accountability of the university powers-that-be who admitted W. to Harvard and Yale? Why was much of the U.S. press and public in 2000 so oblivious to Bush's SCANDALOUS lack of preparation for the highest office in the land? Where was the examination of his character back in 2000, when Bush made it a leading campaign issue?
This is the book Kafka urges us to read: a book that "bites and stings" with implied rebuke: how did we let this calamity (this president of both breathtaking stupidity and impoverished character) happen?

Seldom is the Question Asked, Is Something Wrong with Him?
By Neocons_R_Idiots
I used to laugh at Bush's verbal gaffes too, but seldom is the question asked, is there something wrong with the man? Has he fallen off the wagon? Is his brain fried? Mine would be if I kept up the party-boy lifestyle I had as a college undergrad until I was 40. Think about it, wouldn't your brain be toast too after decades of alcohol and possibly cannibus and poppi abuse? Consider, in the August 2004 timeframe alone, Bush: > stammered some hysterically incomprehensible gibberish about tribal sovereignty to a group of native american journalists. Though it doesn't make for a good Bushism "sound byte" his incomprehensible, rambling, ad hoc answer was funny (there's a Quicktime video of this on the web...) Until you realize how remarkabley unprepared he was. His reply to a straightforward soft ball question also was offensive to native americans, who can actually be heard gasping in the background when his answer implied that native americans were "given" their sovereignty by the US government. > Actually, really, said, "Our enemies will never stop seeking ways to harm our country and its people, AND NEITHER WILL WE!" durning a press conference where he signed a $400 billion plus dollar military appropriation. Doh! > Last but not least, made a mega-freudian-faux pax on the campaing trail in front of thousands when he said something to the effect that... "we must not stop OB/GYN doctors from spreading their love of woman across the country." HA-HA-Huh?! Bear in mind, these >all occured around a one month period

The Pro-Growth Progressive: An Economic Strategy for Shared Prosperity, by Gene Sperling

After two consecutive elections in which Democratic candidates failed to turn clear economic advantages into electoral victory, a debate is raging over what the Democrats should donow. The narrow, red state-blue state argument between chest-beating populists and soulless centrists offers the answer to neither the country's economic future nor the political future of the Democrats. In The Pro-Growth Progressive, President Clinton's longest-serving national economic advisor, Gene Sperling, argues that the best economic strategy for our nation -- and the best strategy for progressives whether they be Democrat, Republican, or Independent -- is to pursue policies that are both progressive and pro-growth, that promote progressive values of upward mobility, fair starts, and economic dignity as well as embrace markets and innovation.
Sperling describes how both parties offer the American public impoverished choices: Democrats in the-sky-is-falling party too often pretend that the way to promote progressive values and expand the American middle class is to slow the pace of the global economy, stop all outsourcing, and intervene in the market. Republicans of the don't-worry-be-happy party hold fast to the bankrupt vision that the best thing for economic growth is the smallest government possible, and have made the conservative deficit hawks of the 1990s an endangered species. But The Pro-Growth Progressive is neither an all-out assault on the Bush agenda nor a partisan call for Democrats to move further left. Both conservatives and progressives have to accept hard truths about the limitations of their approaches. Drawing on his years of policy experience, Sperling lays out a third way on the issues that are dominating the news and Bush's second term: social security, ownership, globalization, and deficit reduction. He explains the policy alternatives that respect the power of free markets while giving government a role in ensuring that the markets benefit all working families. Focused and timely, The Pro-Growth Progressive offers a realistic vision of free enterprise and economic growth in which government can improve education, reduce poverty, and restore the country to fiscal sanity.

From Booklist
The American economy continues to show steady growth despite massive federal deficits and skyrocketing energy costs. Compared to the economies of Japan and most western European nations, the American economy's capacity for job creation seems particularly dynamic. Yet concerns about the direction of our economy persist, as the deficit balloons and the gap between rich and poor widens. Sperling, the national economic advisor to President Clinton and currently the director of the Center on Universal Education at the Council on Foreign Relations, deals with these concerns in a low-key, generally sensible treatise that avoids the inflammatory language frequently characterizing today's debates on economic policy. Dogmatists from the Right and Left will dismiss many of Sperling's suggestions, but flexible Republicans and Democrats may find much common ground here. He recognizes both the inevitability and the value of globalization but realizes the short-term havoc it can create in particular industries. He offers interesting observations on issues as varied as paid family leave, Social Security reform, and universal preschool education. Jay Freeman

Review
"In the 1990s, Gene Sperling played a pivotal role in America's progressive economic revival, which led to record job growth, higher middle-class wages, and millions of Americans being lifted out of poverty. With this book, he offers a far-reaching but commonsense vision of how to do it again, in a more complex time. For anyone committed to long-term prosperity that benefits all Americans, this book is a must read."
-- President Bill Clinton

"Gene Sperling, one of the chief architects of Clintonomics, does it again. With humanity, optimism, and realism, his important book, The Pro-Growth Progressive, tells us how to channel the forces of economic change to our advantage."
-- George A. Akerlof, Nobel Laureate in Economics 2001

"Globalization confronts us with a baffling array of domestic, economic, and political issues, alongside some rapidly emerging geo-political and geo-economic forces. Gene Sperling's balanced and sophisticated analysis, and an unusually wide array of possible prescriptions, is indeed an impressive piece of work."
-- Peter G. Peterson, former Secretary of Commerce and author of Running On Empty

"Even if you have never completed an economics course, this hugely readable book charts a comprehensible and balanced course between doctrinaire policies of both right and left. No misty theoretician, Sperling espouses specific and practical responses to economic and societal problems that too many have thought insoluble."
-- Arthur Levitt, former Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission

A vision for Democratic Party domestic policy
By Andrew J. Givens
The Pro-Growth Progressive is an outline that promotes the agenda of the liberal movement (now self re-named as Progressive). This outline contains both strategy (to link policy ideas to American values of work, self reliance, fairness, equality of opportunites, etc.) and substance.

Both strategy and substance are well organized and mostly balanced. I tend to overlook the occasional rhetoric and one-sidedness, since it was probably inserted to help maintain the interest of the extreme left. In short: this outline is mostly a re-statement of the Clinton adm. domestic policy goals, with some expanded, some re-worked, and with some interesting new ideas presented here.

The main policies suggested here are:

1. Universal 401(k)with $2-to-$1 matching tax credits on the 1st $2,000 invested (and portability, since ALL americans will be offered this program).
2. Universal Pre-school.
3. Universal after-school.
4. Job re-training programs, and education assistance programs.
5. Maintain Social Security in it's present form (fix it by adding a new 3% tax on all income above $200,000).
6. Reject any/all attempts at protectionist trade policy.
7. Maintain and improve the current progressive tax system.
8. Reverse the Bush Tax cuts (at least on the top 2% and on the reduction of estate taxes).
9. Modest increase in Fed. min. wage (to $7.00 - $7.25 in 2006).
10. Expand/increase the Earned Income Tax Credit.
11. Balance the budget (except in times of recession or other national urgency situation).

While most moderates can agree with most of these policies, at least in principle, the author has presented few estimates of actual costs to taxpayers. This summary of costs should have been included in a final chapter - such final chapter was notably absent. The estimated costs are a necessary component of any serious policy discussion and should have been summarized in table form.

Left to my own rough estimates, it seems that the Progressive agenda presented here would cost:
- reverse the Bush tax cuts
AND
- increase taxes BY TWO TIMES the Bush-tax-cut-reversal-amount to balance the budget, to fully fund SS, Medicare, the Universal 401K, etc.

While the policy objectives presented in this outline are noble and honorable, much elaboration is still needed on each item that would further examine the cost of the income transfers and the benefits to America as a whole.

I did enjoy the author's style and his aggressive and fair debate. (BTW, I am a moderate Republican...) His relentless pursuit of a balanced budget is absolutely correct, and the proposal of Universal 401k is also a policy whose time is right. Finally, his analysis that free trade is good for all Americans proves that he is a Democrat that "gets it". It fact, the author thinks like an economist - understands there are ALWAYS trade-offs and secondary effects, and thereby measures his policy goals by their likely overall consequenses to the US economy. (Hence the "pro-growth" objectives.) The major question left TBD is whether the policy results themselves can provide more contribution to a "virtual cycle" or will the costs of poorly re-distributed capital create an excessive drag on the economy (thus hurting those that such policies are designed to help)?

Republicans better get their act together - strategists like Gene Sperling have an agenda that if follwed by Dem candidates - will probably change the political landscape for a very long time. If Democratic candidates were to follow these guidelines, there could be a new majority in congress in 2006 and the WH in 2008.

Ignores Health, No Budget--Reflections Not Solutions
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
Anthony Gibbens' review is superb, and I endorse it and amplify on it. THis book loses one star to two flaws: it begs too many key issues (such as health care, and corporate accountability), and it has no budget and no section on tax reform and increasing government revenue by eliminating fraud, waste, loopholes, and bribery-induced subsidies. That is always my litmus test for serious books about economic policy. One can use the National Budget Simulation, for example, and actually test all these ideas. I, for example, have taken the trouble to identify $550 billion a year in readily available increases in federal tax revenue, and another $300 billion a year in defense and intelligence spending that could be redirected toward soft power and open source intelligence/revitalization of education and national research. It's not real until it's in the budget. This book is platitudinous, worthy of consideration, but not legislatively enactable.

There is no question but that Gene Sperling performed ably for President Clinton EXCEPT that he sacrified the American worker by opening the door for broad indiscriminate lay-offs (see my review of The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences by Louis Uchitelle) and he evidently did not see the economic urgency of completely recasting our national educational system (including exile of the stake-holders in the old system to Chinese re-education camps near Mongolia).

On balance, Sperling is now one of those "has experience, listen to him" guys, but he is part of the last gasp of the old guard in the Democratic party, and for my money, a combination of Return of Rubin and Elevation of Matthew Miller would do more good. See my reviews of the books by both these stars.

The author lacks real familiarity with emergent technologies, especially bio-technologies that are CRTICIAL to reducing poverty and illiteracy (see my review of Tofflers Revolutionary Wealth: How it will be created and how it will change our lives), and over-all the book does not represent a comprehensive strategy that reflects an understanding of system dynamics, both internal to the Republic and globally.

Bottom line: worth reading, 30% of this will be useful, somewhat tired. Rubin is more mature, Miller more innovative. Sperling needs to be in the car, but not driving.

Sin Killer: A Novel (Berrybender Narratives), by Larry McMurtry

From Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry comes the first in a four-volume epic journey through the early American frontier, featuring the Berrybender family, English nobility adrift in the American West in the 1830s.

It is 1830, and the Berrybender family—rich, aristocratic, English, and hopelessly out of place—is on its way up the Missouri River to see the untamed West as it begins to open up. With irascible determination—and a great deal of outright chaos—the party experiences both the awesome majesty and brutal savagery of the unexplored land, from buffalo stampedes and natural disasters to Indian raids and encounters with frontiersmen and trappers, explorers, pioneers, and one part-time preacher known as "the Sin Killer." Packed with breathtaking adventure, charming romance, and a sense of humor stretching clear over the horizon, Sin Killer is a truly unique view of the West that could only come from the boundless skill and imagination of Larry McMurtry.

Amazon.com Review
Larry McMurtry's Sin Killer is a wildly entertaining ride through the untamed Great Plains. The first installment of a proposed tetralogy, The Berrybender Narratives, Sin Killer follows the adventures of the Berrybenders, a large, noble English family traveling the Missouri River in 1832. This deeply self-absorbed and spoiled family leaves England for the unknown of the American West, based solely on a "whim" and Lord Berrybender's desire to "shoot different animals from those he shot at home." The novel joins the family as they make their way toward Yellowstone aboard a luxury steamer, accompanied by a motley assemblage of servants, guides, and natives. Along the way, this "floating Europe" and its bickering, stubborn passengers encounter constant adversity, including warring natives, hellacious weather, accidental deaths, and kidnappings.

Thanks largely to Sin Killer's gallery of colorful personalities, McMurtry keeps most of the action firmly in the realm of fish-out-of-water farce. One such character is the independent and opinionated eldest daughter Tasmin, who, frustrated by her family's conventions, escapes the steamer, whereupon she meets and falls in love with Jim Snow, a.k.a. Sin Killer. Snow, an Indian killer raised by natives, is a stoical, God-fearing man who won't tolerate blasphemy. With prose that flows as naturally as the Missouri, McMurtry weaves together a large cast and vast setting into a thoroughly exciting, hilarious adventure novel. Though Sin Killer focuses on a love story and contains plenty of realistic violence, McMurtry's efficient voice and matter-of-fact perspective leaves little room for tragedy or sentimentality, instead emphasizing high comedy. This is wonderful storytelling from a narrator in perfect agreement with his subject. Sin Killer should please McMurtry's many fans, who now have much to look forward to. --Ross Doll

From Publishers Weekly
Part western, part satire of the English class system contrasted with rugged frontier society, the first volume of this proposed tetralogy gets off to a shaky start as McMurtry introduces the randy, bumbling Berrybender clan, a rich but inept aristocratic British family that journeys up the Missouri River to try to capitalize on the land boom of the 1830s. The early romantic subplot shows promise when beautiful but flighty Lady Tasmin Berrybender, temporarily separated from her group, is rescued by Jim Snow, a quiet, religious trapper known as the Sin Killer, both for his piety (I'm hard on sin ) and for his fierce fighting skills. Snow returns Tasmin to the family vessel, and his sudden marriage proposal delights Tasmin, until she discovers that he already has two Indian wives. The other narrative lines aren't nearly as entertaining, as McMurtry veers back and forth between outlining the war between various rival Indian tribes and trying to generate comic sparks with the Berrybenders' ongoing series of pratfalls. He has some brief success in the later chapters when Tasmin defies her pompous father, Lord Berrybender, as he tries to undo the marriage to keep the family bloodline pure, and Jim Snow remains an intriguing figure throughout. But much of the light comedy lands with a thud, and the introduction of a raft of mostly superfluous characters takes the edge off McMurtry's prose and makes the Berrybenders seem silly and inane rather than charming. McMurtry does plant a few promising plot seeds for the ensuing books, but it will take a more focused and genuinely humorous effort the next time out to make this concept work. While the narrative fails to satisfy as a true western, readers should enjoy McMurtry's portrait of the terrain bordering the Missouri River. Future volumes will be set on or beside three other rivers, the Yellowstone, the Rio Grande and the Brazos.

From Library Journal
McMurtry here begins a planned tetralogy of the adventures of the Berrybender family. The Berrybenders are wealthy members of the British aristocracy. In 1832, they travel up the Missouri River in a luxurious steamboat with a legion of servants, Indian chiefs, a cello-playing mistress, a cook, a tutor, a governess, and a French femme du chambre who manages to fall off the boat, much to the amusement of the Indians. In true McMurtry tradition, disaster strikes in myriad ways, and members of the party are scattered across the Great Plains. At the center of the action is the eldest Berrybender daughter, Tamsin, and her growing love for a mysterious Westerner, the fearsome Indian fighter/preacher known as the Sin Killer. It is hard to describe this work succinctly because there is so much action, but in a nutshell, it is a ship of fools, a slapstick black comedy set against the immense backdrop of the American West. The fabulous Alfred Molina narrates the story, and his facility with voices and accents is simply dazzling. Enthusiastically recommended for all libraries; patrons will eagerly await the next installment.
