Purvis, Mississippi, 1974: Willem Fremont has just returned to his childhood hometown to come to grips with his past. He has spent his adult life held tight inside the clenched fist of panic disorder -- the stagnation produced by making too many wrong decisions was more paralyzing than a whole case of Jim Beam.
Determined that a trip back to the family farm will help him confront his unhappy upbringing, Willem is stunned to find his father's beloved acreage -- so much land, such a great big house -- in the hands of Eilene Till and her two grown sons. There's the plump and perennially unemployed Sonny, building a shrimp boat in the Tills' landlocked backyard, and Bruno, a disabled Vietnam vet, who escapes into his stash of old National Geographics while his wife, Leah, seeks a small measure of comfort in the day-to-day tending of their farm. How Willem navigates through these unsettled lives to find love and reconciliation in his own is at the heart of this compassionate portrait of small-town America that celebrates the unusual, embraces the unwanted, and opens its arms to all lost souls in search of a home.

Not too sure I would read this book again..
By S.
The book had some good detailed writing, but I could just not get into the story. I notice above that they offer this book along with Mother of Pearl which, was a truly wonderful book;honestly, one of my favorites.William's field had some good descriptive work, the charactors were fairly well developed, but not too sure if the author knew where they were going with the book. Not too sure I would read this one again. Had to try Ms. Haynes's book though. She's a good author overall, just didn't care for this one. Maybe you will feel differently.

Melinda Haynes has done it again
By L. Fort
When I find an author that I love to read, I wait for them to bring us another book. I was certainly not disappointed by Ms. Haynes third book. As I read her work I am in awe, how does she come up with these storylines? Between the brothers, the mother and Willem, we are given a cast of true characters. this is a must read.

Now what the heck was that all about ?
By Jerry Guild
From reading the reviews and the critical acclaims on the dust jacket,I was expecting a lot from this book.Southern writers have always been my favorite in fiction.I am particularly fond of Erskine Caldwell and have read all his novels and many of his short stories. The South has always provided a wealth of life and historical material, but it takes great expertise on the part of an author to create 'a great Southern novel'.The Old West is similar in that there is plenty of material, real or fictional, but again great skill and believability is what creates a 'great Western'.To say this book is in the same league as Margaret Mitchell's,GWTW,Caldwell's 'God's Little Acre',or Tobacco Road,Steinbeck's earthy novels and novels by Faulkner or Williams is a real stretch of the imagination,at least in my opinion.First of all,as I read this novel,I was continually left with the feeling that the author had never really spent any time with these types of people,in other words she seemed remote from what she was writing about.Good southern writing is loaded with humor, dejection, helplessness ,hopelessnes, trial and ,language and phrases, tribulation, and earthyness so powerful you it jumps out at you on every page.I did not get this sort of thing from this book.I think there were parts of the novel that had the makings of a good story, but it was too dragged out with detailed descriptions that I just wanted to get past and on with the story.Maybe the whole book was just too long for the story being told, that the reader was so busy reading description that the impact of the situations got lost;again in my opinion.I guess the best way I can make my point is that this book could be written in half the words and would have been better. This is something I couldn't say about Erskine Caldwell's novels.Although Steinbeck and Caldwell were contemporaries, few people know that Caldwell outsold Steinbeck at the time, however, for a lot of reasons his greatness has been belittled so much that he is becoming unknown.I was quite taken by Haynes' several references to Taylor Caldwell in this book ,since when lookind for Erskine Caldwell novels in used bookstores,I am often corrected with a comment "Oh,you must mean Taylor Caldwell".So,if you've never read Erskine Caldwell, and want to see what great Southern writing is,check out some of his works.
