Meanwhile Michael has very inadvisably seduced Darkey's girl, Bridget -- saucy, fickle, and irresistible. Michael worries that he's being followed, that his affair with Bridget will be revealed. He's right to be anxious; when Darkey discovers the affair, he plans a very hard fall for young Michael, a gambit devilish in its guile, murderous in its intent.
But Darkey fails to account for Michael's toughness and ingenuity or the possibility that he might wreak terrible vengeance upon those who would betray him.

McKinty's second novel is a brutal tale of revenge starring a young illegal immigrant from Ireland who chooses a criminal career in New York over unemployment in Belfast. Arriving in the city in the early 1990s, the antihero Michael Forsythe lands a spot as an enforcer for Irish mobster Darkey White. Though Forsythe at first keeps his hands relatively clean, he soon racks up a significant number of kills in skirmishes with rival crews as well as with Dominican gangs warring for control of the streets. An affair with his boss's girlfriend leads to a setup: he and his mates are trapped in a drug sting in Mexico and abandoned in a remote prison. "If someone grows up in the civil war of Belfast in the seventies and eighties, perhaps violence is his only form of meaningful expression," McKinty writes early in the novel, and the bulk of the story recounts Forsythe's grisly efforts to escape and avenge himself, including a stint with a Dominican group seeking to oust Darkey White. The pace is brisk and energetic, but Forsythe remains a cipher-a self-educated intellectual who listens to Tolstoy on tape during a stakeout but exhibits puzzlingly little interest in finding an alternative to the gun and the knife. The dark, brooding tone is reminiscent of Dennis Lehane, but McKinty has yet to achieve Lehane's depth and complexity.

His Irish-tough language of isolation and longing makes us love and trust him despite his oh-so-great and violent flaws. A thriller; very suspenseful and gritty

DEAD I WELL MAY BE by Adrian McKinty is Book 1 of his Michael Forsythe series.
The book is narrated by Michael, often giving the reader a hint at what action is to come.
He has left Belfast, Northern Ireland at age 19, and is recruited by the Irish crime boss, Darkey White in New York City.
This is a thriller; very suspenseful; gritty; peppered with violent, greedy, totally amoral bad-boy thugs who daily commit acts of unimaginable cruelty and violence.
Descriptive words that come to mind include: dirty, filthy, bugs, rats, heat, humidity, sweat, wounds, deaths (often very casual) and betrayals. And these words apply to New York. I would have to add more if I was to describe the Mexican prison he finds himself in.
Michael’s childhood, background and environment - all seem to predict his current life as an amoral thug, thief, murderer and torturer, yet he does not seem unintelligent. He often muses on philosophical thoughts (reminding me of Sean Duffy) and seems (at times) to want to humanize his lifestyle and situation. Just when one thinks there is room for empathizing with or redeeming our Michael, a violent act will hurl you back into the reality of Michael’s life.
I did like the complex characters and the suspense of the plot, but one needs a strong stomach.

Fantastic, Intense, Lyrical, Gripping Thriller

Not being too familiar with the crime genre in general but scanning the library fiction isles for a good read to take my mind off of my mind-numbing job, this book pretty much jumped off the shelf and invited itself home with me. The synopsis sounded riveting, and I had enjoyed three of Frank (RIP) McCourt's memoirs. Frank's brutal endorsement on the cover sealed the deal. "Unputdownable" has been used to describe this book by many reviewers, and I'd have to agree. Michael Forsythe is an endlessly engaging character: a flawed action hero with a brilliant, literary mind--by the way, how did he get so well educated in the tough neighborhoods of Ireland before he made it to NYC as an ambitious and relatively fearless teenager? It doesn't matter because the intellect and poetic eloquence is all McKinty's doing, and one is helplessly attached to Michael and his mission of hubris and revenge. I love this book so much that I buy used copies online whenever I can find them and give them to my friends and insist that they read it. You should to. Whatever fool has allowed this one to slip out of print should be fired.
