Michael Gerber has been cracking jokes more or less constantly since his days at The Yale Record, America's oldest college humor magazine. Since then, his humor has appeared many places, including The New Yorker, Playboy, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and Saturday Night Live. This is his first book. And it shows.

Moderately humorous satire of the Harry Potter books

Barry Trotter, at 22, has become an eternal student at Hogwash School, as parents are willing to spend any amount of money to have their kids go to school with him. He earns the odd bit of cash by selling the location of Hogwash to the Stun newspaper and other such schemes. But the Stun scheme has backfired--Muddles are gathering in increasing numbers outside the gates, and Headmaster Alpo Bumblemore sees only one way out of being overwhelmed--Barry and his pals must stop the next Barry Trotter movie--or else!
I would describe this book as mixed--the first chapters, at Hogwash, are inspired, so is the ultimate confrontation with Lord Valumart. Inbetween, unfortunately, the book has a tendency to bog down
Still, I'd say it is a good read for the Harry Potter fan or enemy. Both should enjoy it.

Not for me

I bought this book, mainly because I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and while waiting for J.K. Rowling's new book (seems like an enternity) I tried to wet my appetite a little with this book. I really wish I hadn't. I really did try to give it a chance. I didn't laugh once and the jokes that may have been funny, I just didn't get because the writing and spelling were sloppy and horrible. It would have been much better if the person could actually write and form decent sentences. I don't usually give up on books, no matter how bad, but I couldn't get past the third chapter. So, all you Potter Fans, do yourself a big favor and just save your time and money for the next Harry Potter book, the real one and not this rubbish.

Potter fans CAN be Trotter fans.

I have to say, I'm an avid Harry Potter fan. But I also have a sense of humour. This book isn't just for those of you who are sick of hype (which I defend as totally valid ;) ), it's also for any ADULT Harry fan who can have a laugh. I'd be suprised if J.K. herself hasn't had a bit of a chuckle at this one!
I highly recommend Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody. Its not just a cheap insult at a children's book, its a valid comment on over merchandised children's fads and commercialisation. Satisfies the cynic in even the most devout potter fan.
