Fascinating chronicle of extraordinary men

I read this to learn more about Rick Rescorla's exploits on 9/11. What I found was a case study of adventurers between WWII and 9/11. The author did a great job of describing both the exciting and the mundane aspects of the lives of two best friends over four decades. It was easy to become connected to these men and to share in their highs and lows over the years. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants insight into the minds of warriors through all aspects of life.

Looking for real heros? Look no further.

I nearly wept after reading the excerpt published in the New Yorker. ("The Real Heros are Dead", Feb 11 2003, which is still available free on their website.)
And this piece just a hint of the quality of the rest of the book. Heart of a Soldier is justifiably a welcome respite from the usual politicizing, sensationalizing and garment-rending post-9/11 books. It elevated the tragedy to a profoundly heroic, yet poignantly human level -- something I believe we're all in need of.
After all, the memory of 9/11 means more than the loss of the buildings and of nearly 3,000 souls. Because we rebuild. Life does go on. It's about the human experiences because that's what will be remembered for generations. They are true sources of inspiration. In the context of his experience, Richard Rescorla serves as a powerful reminder -- and an example -- of how one person, one life, anyone, can rise above when called upon to make a difference.

In narrating Nhat Hanh's spiritual guide, York did not have an easy task. The text is an accessible, solid introduction to Buddhist principles. Since Nhat Hanh is committed to what he calls "engaged Buddhism," he takes basic Buddhist practices (mindful breathing and walking meditation) and shows how they can transform not only a soul, but a family and even a nation. But can a narrator find drama in a series of meditation instructions? York does. While there is very serious drama in the text at times-Nhat Hanh was a young monk in Vietnam in the 1950s and '60s and brought his faith and his work with refugees right up to the front lines-this is a book of reflections, and York manages to find the poignancy in these reflections. Indeed, York's reading stays so close to the spirit of the text that listeners can practically hear the inflection of the monk himself. His voice is soothing, yet never hypnotic-a great match for a work that urges its listeners to wake up to their true natures.

About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced tik-not-hawn) is a world-renowned writer, scholar, spiritual leader, and Zen Buddhist monk. Since age sixteen, he has been a Buddhist monk, a peace activist, and a seeker of the way. He has survived three wars, persecution, and more than thirty years of exile from his native Vietnam, when he was banned by both the non-Communist and Communist governments for his role in undermining the violence he saw affecting his people. He is still the master of one of the most prominent temples in Vietnam, and his lineage is traceable directly to the Buddha himself. A prolific author, Nhat Hanh has written more than one hundred books of philosophy, poetry, and fiction. Chapter One: What Is True Peace?

True peace is always possible. Yet it requires strength and practice, particularly in times of great difficulty. To some, peace and nonviolence are synonymous with passivity and weakness. In truth, practicing peace and nonviolence is far from passive. To practice peace, to make peace alive in us, is to actively cultivate understanding, love, and compassion, even in the face of misperception and conflict. Practicing peace, especially in times of war, requires courage.

All of us can practice nonviolence. We begin by recognizing that, in the depths of our consciousness, we have both the seeds of compassion and the seeds of violence. We become aware that our mind is like a garden that contains all kinds of seeds: seeds of understanding, seeds of forgiveness, seeds of mindfulness, and also seeds of ignorance, fear, and hatred. We realize that, at any given moment, we can behave with either violence or compassion, depending on the strength of these seeds within us.

When the seeds of anger, violence, and fear are watered in us several times a day, they will grow stronger. Then we are unable to be happy, unable to accept ourselves; we suffer and we make those around us suffer. Yet when we know how to cultivate the seeds of love, compassion, and understanding in us every day, those seeds will become stronger, and the seeds of violence and hatred will become weaker and weaker. We know that if we water the seeds of anger, violence, and fear in us, we will lose our peace and our stability. We will suffer and we will make those around us suffer. But if we cultivate the seeds of compassion, we nourish peace within us and around us. With this understanding, we are already on the path of creating peace.

The teachings of this book are offered to help anyone who aspires to lead a life of nonviolence. These practices are the living legacy of the Buddha and of my ancestral teachers. They are as powerful today as they were at the time of the Buddha's awakening, 2,600 years ago. Together, they form a practical manual of peace -- for you, your family, your community, and the world. At this time, with so much conflict in the world, I am offering this book to help us realize that violence is not inevitable. Peace is there for us in every moment. It is our choice.

The Nature of War

In 1946, during the French-Indochina War, I was a novice monk at the Tu Hieu Temple in Hue, central Vietnam. At that time, the city of Hue was occupied by the French army. One day, two French soldiers arrived at our temple. While one stayed in the jeep outside the temple gate, the other came in, carrying a gun, and demanded all of our rice. We had only one sack of rice for all the monks and he wanted to take it away. The soldier was young, about twenty, and hungry. He looked thin and pale, as if he had malaria, which I also had at that time. I had to obey his order to carry our heavy bag of rice to the jeep. It was a long distance, and as I staggered under the bag's precious weight, anger and unhappiness rose up in me. They were taking the little rice we had, leaving our community without any food. Later, to my relief, I learned that one of the older monks had buried a large container of rice on the temple grounds, deep in the earth.

Many times over the years I have meditated on this French soldier. I have seen that, in his teens, he had to leave his parents, brothers, sisters, and friends to travel across the world to Vietnam, where he faced the horrors of killing my countrymen or being killed. I have often wondered whether the soldier survived and was able to return home to his parents. It is very likely that he did not survive. The French-Indochina War lasted many years, ending only with the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu and the Geneva Accord in 1954. After looking deeply, I came to realize that the Vietnamese were not the only victims of the war; the French soldiers were victims as well. With this insight, I no longer had any anger toward the young soldier. Compassion for him was born in me, and I only wished him well.

I did not know the French soldier's name and he did not know mine, but when we met we were already enemies. He came and was prepared to kill me for our food, and I had to comply with his order to protect myself and my fellow monks. The two of us were not, by nature, enemies. Under different circumstances, we could have become close friends, even loving each other as brothers. It was only the war that separated us and brought violence between us.

This is the nature of war: it turns us into enemies. People who have never met kill each other out of fear. War creates so much suffering -- children become orphans, entire cities and villages are destroyed. All who suffer through these conflicts are victims. Coming from a background of such devastation and suffering, having experienced the French-Indochina War and the Vietnam War, I have the deep aspiration to prevent war from ever happening again.

It is my prayer that nations will no longer send their young people to fight each other, not even in the name of peace. I do not accept the concept of a war for peace, a "just war," as I also cannot accept the concept of "just slavery," "just hatred," or "just racism." During the wars in Vietnam, my friends and I declared ourselves neutral; we took no sides and we had no enemies, North or South, French, American, or Vietnamese. We saw that the first victim of war is the person who perpetrates it. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind."

The Nature of Peace

During the war in Vietnam, those of us who practiced nonviolence learned that it is truly possible to live happily and free from hatred, even among people who hate us. But to do so, we need to be calm, to see clearly what the real situation is and what it is not, and then to wake up and act with courage. Peace is not simply the absence of violence; it is the cultivation of understanding, insight, and compassion, combined with action. Peace is the practice of mindfulness, the practice of being aware of our thoughts, our actions, and the consequences of our actions. Mindfulness is at once simple and profound. When we are mindful and cultivate compassion in our daily lives, we diminish violence each day. We have a positive effect on our family, friends, and society.

Some people think there is a difference between mindfulness and meditation, but this is not correct. The practice of mindfulness is simply to bring awareness into each moment of our lives. Mindful living is an art. You do not have to be a monk or live in a monastery to practice mindfulness. You can practice it anytime, while driving your car or doing housework. Driving in mindfulness will make the time in your car joyful, and it will also help you avoid accidents. You can use the red traffic light as a signal of mindfulness, reminding you to stop and enjoy your breathing. Similarly, when you do the dishes after dinner, you can practice mindful breathing so the time of dish washing is pleasant and meaningful. Do not feel you have to rush. If you hurry, you waste the time of dish washing. The time you spend washing dishes and doing all your other everyday tasks is precious. It is a time for being alive. When you practice mindful living, peace will bloom during your daily activities.

Please use the guided meditations in this book to help you practice mindfulness and nonviolence. You can use these practices individually, and you and your family can enjoy them together. These step-by-step meditations help us to calm our emotions and to see our "interbeing" -- to see that there is no separation between you and me, between you and any other person, to see that we all "inter-are." As my friend Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, "All life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny."

The spiritual teachings of all traditions help us cultivate the seeds of compassion, nonviolence, inclusiveness, and reconciliation. They show us the way out of fear and conflict: Hatred cannot be stopped by hatred. Violence should not be responded to with violence. The only way out of violence and conflict is for us to embrace the practice of peace, to think and act with compassion, love, and understanding. Yet many of us have lost faith in these teachings and think that they are unrealistic and outdated. Instead, we invest ourselves in the pursuit of fame and wealth, thinking that these will make us happy. When we are honest with ourselves and look deeply into our hearts, however, we will see that even if we had unlimited wealth and power, we could still live in fear. The only way out of violence and conflict is for us to embrace the practice of peace, to think and act with compassion, love, and understanding.

A Personal Peace Treaty

Included in these pages are examples of agreements that you can make with yourself, your partner, and your family. These treaties commit us to practice reconciliation and communication with loved ones, friends, colleagues, and other people with whom we live and work. They are concrete commitments to transform our lives.

To make a personal peace treaty we can write: "Dear Self, I promise to practice and live my daily life in a way that will not touch or water the seed of violence within me." We are determined in every moment to protect ourselves from negative thinking and to nourish loving-kindness within us. We can also share this commitment with our beloved ones. We can go to our partner, our son or daughter, and say, "My dear, my beloved one, if you really love me, please do not water the seed of violence in me. Please water the seed of compassion in me. I promise to do the same for you."

You can honor this commitment in many ways. You can avoid situations that make you angry or create conflict with others. For instance, when you read a magazine you may encounter ideas and images that water the seeds of hatred and fear in you. Or while you are conversing with someone, the discussion may make you upset and you may fe...

Great Book, teaches compassion and understanding

This book is a great book, whether you are into the Buddhist beliefs or not. It teaches so much about relationships, understanding others and being able to calm ourselves when needed. It teaches how to deal with anger with our children, spouses, or anyone. It can help in you home as well as in a work environment. It can create peace in our lives, calmness, less stress, which I believe would help just about anyone. I would recommend you read it with an open mind and heart and you will get something out of it. Simplicity Engenders Peace

If you are one of those who feels you never have a moment's peace, then it's obvious that you need to simplify your life. While Thich Nhat Hanh is considered the world's foremost peace activist, he is perhaps its foremost simplicity activist as well and a prime example that simplicity engenders peace. He is a simple monk who leads a plain and simple life and writes the same way. I have always admired his style for its ease and clarity in pointing to the plain truths behind the often didactic tenants of Buddhism. Using very clear and yet subtle metaphors and personal anecdotes, he points to the basic truths beyond the dicotomies of the sutras and koans. In fact, many academicians, scholars and Buddhist teachers would do well to emulate his style. Because Nhat Hanh's writing is so simplistic, many pass off his ideas as being too naïve. After all, how can anyone ever hope to achieve world peace? But Nhat Hanh's writing is deceptive in its subtlety. In his newest book, CREATING TRUE PEACE: Ending Violence in Yourself, Your Family, Your Community, and the World , Nhat Hanh teaches how the seed of peace planted within one individual with proper nurturing can bloom into a peaceful family and then a peaceful community and later a peaceful country, and finally turn the entire world into a garden of peace.
CREATING TRUE PEACE is a compilation of his teachings from other works such as Peace Is Every Step, Miracle of Mindfulness, and Interbeing to name a few. As usual, he uses metaphors, personal anecdotes, commentaries and meditations, many from past lectures and texts, to show us how such an improbable task is truly possible. He discusses his usual topics: breathing, sitting and walking meditation, the five mindfulness trainings, listening and more. But unlike some of his earlier works, this one presents practical, step-by-step methods for getting along with oneself, one's mate and children, one's neighbors and co-workers and one's country as well as a Manifesto for World Peace and some previously unpublished mindfulness trainings, which Nhat Hanh has developed over the years.
Although his writing is simplistic that doesn't mean it should be taken literally. One still must find one's own path through the violence that exists in the world today. He uses the metaphor of a lotus that grows in mud to show how the practice of acceptance can lead to peace even in a world of turmoil and upheaval. .Nhat Hanh believes the seed of peace begins with mindfulness. Especially, we need to be mindful consumers. We must watch for the consumption of that which leads to unmindfulness like alcohol or violence in the media. However, even these remain open to interpretation. I doubt if Nhat Hanh would seriously tell us to avoid Shakespeare's Macbeth or even Kubrick's classic Clockwork Orange.
I was particularly fascinated by Nhat Hanh's discourse on Interbeing. Here, he turns to the insect kingdom for his analogy, relating the interaction of worker bees to the shared unconsciousness that connects us all. My fascination stemmed from having written a screenplay, in which one of the character's uses the same analogy when explaining a supernatural cataclysm that is starting to destroy our hive mind and leaving in its path only mankind's sense of individuality - The Root of All Evil.
Speaking of writing and other forms of creativity, you may find some of Nhat Hanh's methods particularly helpful in those areas. I adapted a couple of his techniques to overcome writer's block. But you must be careful. You might get so creative that you won't leave time for anything else, which is probably why this review is rather lengthy. But his techniques do work.

Conflict Resolution, Mindfulness and Expanded Sangha

I cannot praise this book or author enough. It and he are truly inspirational.

Thich Nhat Hanh is an incredible teacher who writes clearly and provides personal short stories as examples to leave the reader with lucid understanding of the message of placing yourself in the other person's shoes. Listening, speaking kindly, and taking the time to become calm, and to mindfully resolve suffering and conflict in a peaceful and lasting manner.

He encourages us to practice Mindfulness meditation and to inter-be and create a special safe room in your homes as a sanctuary for peace, calmness, mindfulness, and resolution of conflict.

On page 172 in the author's own words, he says:

"We need to look deeply to see what we are now doing with our lives. We let individualism prevail in the twentieth century, and frankly we have made a mess out of it. We must begin anew for the twenty first century; we need a new different direction. We can no longer continue to destroy ourselves and the planet we live on. With determination we can abandon the cult of individualism and the self, and act and live in harmony in the spirit of interbeing.
The sangha, the spiritual community, is our new direction, and sangha building is the noblest task we have before us. To build a sangha, we have to learn to open ourselves to each other and to share our experiences, insights, time, and love. The sangha must be our refuge for all of us in this new century."

This author spends absolutely no time trying to convert anyone to his religion. Instead he spends his life promoting non-violent co-existence methods and a vision of appreciation of the miracle of all life.

When M. Scott Peck wrote People of the Lie in 1983 he offered readers a fascinating glimpse into the human face of evil. His spiritual/psychological profile of people who were narcissistic as well as evil was especially disturbing because so many of us have faced relatives, co-workers, and even spouses with this destructive combination. However, one of his most chilling chapters in that book was titled "Of Possession and Exorcism," in which he explored an even more sinister form of evil—the possibility that the devil and smaller demonic spirits could entrench themselves into a human’s soul. That chapter briefly described two clients who Peck believed were possessed by the devil. Ultimately he performed an exorcism with each client.

In Glimpses of the Devil, Peck returns to this dark and controversial chapter, expanding upon his beliefs in demonic possession. Like many science-educated professionals, Peck was a skeptic when it came to believing in the devil. But here he gives readers the complete story of his conversion as well as a full account of the two clinical cases that made him a believer as well as an exorcist. Because he videotaped the exorcisms, the dialog and scene work is stunningly authentic and convincing.

Some have criticized this discussion as disappointingly dry. One might argue that Peck’s restraint when it comes to dramatics and sensationalism is this book’s strength. In his 1983 bestseller, People of the Lie, Peck devoted a chapter to exorcism. In this astonishing new book, the megaselling author of The Road Less Traveled reveals his work as an exorcist and attempts to establish a science of exorcism for future research. Peck knows that many readers will be skeptical of or flummoxed by his report, and thus he emphasizes that he himself scoffed at the idea of demonic possession before encountering Jersey Babcock; Peck became involved in her case mostly to "prove the devil's nonexistence as scientifically as possible." But a comment by Jersey at their first meeting "blew the thing wide open." Jersey, a Texas resident who believed she was possessed and who was neglecting her children as a result, said that her demons were "really rather weak and pathetic creatures"—a statement so at odds with, as Peck puts it, "standard psychopathology" that his mind began to change. Peck describes two cases in this book, that of Jersey and the more difficult case of Beccah Armitage, a middle-aged woman who grew up in an abusive family, married an abusive husband and was practicing self-mutilation when Peck took her case. Both cases result in full-blown exorcisms with Peck as the lead exorcist, and both, according to Peck, involved paranormal phenomena, including Beccah acquiring a snakelike appearance. Peck intersperses his calm but dramatic recitation of these cases with set-off commentary, and he concludes the book with a reasoned proposal for a science of exorcism ("An exorcism is a massive therapeutic intervention to liberate, teach, and support the victim to choose to reject the devil"). A report from what is to most of us a strange and distant land, Scott's book probably won't convince crowds, but it's powerful and concisely written enough to interest many, and maybe to give a few pause for thought. When famous-name, prepublication endorsements were solicited for Peck's first book, the subsequent perennial best-seller The Road Less Traveled (1978), only Malachi Martin responded. Who? thought Peck, and proceeded to find and read Martin's then latest book, Hostage to the Devil (1976), about five exorcisms of modern Americans. Increasingly concerned with the existence of human evil but not then believing in the devil, Peck sought Martin out and made one of the most crucial acquaintances of his life. Because of Martin's firm, gentle influence, Peck was baptized a Christian (nondenominational, he stresses) and eventually became principal exorcist in two cases encountered in the course of his psychiatric practice. This book reports diagnosis, exorcism, and follow-up in each case. Jersey, a young mother who was neglecting her small children and becoming absorbed in a New Age cult, was referred to Peck as possibly possessed. Wealthy self-made businesswoman Beccah, 45, was a singularly intransigent long-term patient of Peck's who he concluded was possessed. Both women's exorcisms incorporated the Roman Catholic ritual of exorcism, and both were undertaken by teams of six or more persons--fewer, Peck says, is risky, as Beccah's exorcism in particular convinced him--and were videotaped. Both succeeded, but one didn't stick. Peck's accounts of them are riveting, and his analysis of each is perspicacious enough and humble enough on his part to cause, perhaps, believers and skeptics of the devil alike to deepen and reevaluate their positions. The Haunted

I've been an ER nurse for over 15 years and have been acutely familiar with emergent psychiatric disorders in my line of work. As the years passed, I began to note patterns with patients diagnosed with acute psychiatric episodes (ie, schizoprenia, paranoid, schizoaffective disorder, suicidal, homicidal), who often separately came into the ER with similar complaints. Often these complaints would involve the person reporting "hearing voices", which they would sometimes describe as being the devil, demons, or otherwise. These patients would report the voices telling them to do harmful things, to kill, hurt, or somehow injure themselves, their family members or others nearby. Towards the end of my ER career, I began to question whether issues might exist in these patients from a dark spiritual standpoint, rather than just a DMS IV diagnostic code (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). I must also add that up to this point, I considered myself an agnostic and my clinical rationale in life and nursing practice was derived strictly from evidence based science.

M. Scott Peck MD approaches the above concerns first with a scientific approach by ruling out any physical health reasons for the complaints (ie, illness, brain injury, drugs, alcohol) and then follows with a spiritual approach, if applicable. It was an easy read and clearly comes from an educated man who first based his diagnosis from evidence based practice & hard science. I do admit that there were a few mentions that made me question his credibility, but I went into it with an open mind regardless and concluded that he was a credible clinician whose medical approaches coincided with my clinical experiences.

I bought this book along with 'Deliver Us From Evil" by Ralch Sarchie and 'Hostage to the Devil' by Malachi Martin.

You thought he wasn't real?

Or you thought he was just a cool guy with a bad rap from mean ol' God? You thought you could be pals? Think again. A disbelieving, educated and intelligent psychiatrist is telling you how he had his mind changed for him through unlooked-for experiences in his medical practice. Dr. Peck's book is fascinating and enlightening, well written and easy to read even while challenging and maybe a little disquieting, for it has allowed some individuals known to me to have recognized this presence in their own social circles! I recommend this book both for fascination and for information.

Great book, I myself have struggled with demonic attacks ...

Great book, I myself have struggled with demonic attacks since becoming a Christian; he mentions this in his book. This man was brave and selfless to perfoI'll exorcisms without ever really being a part of an exorcisms team or having any sort of "practice". I believe God placed him in his patients life for good reason, and we can all learn from his experience and knowledge. Clearly choices and events impact our lives at the spiritual level. One point missed in the book is; staying close to Christ is the ultimate success for deliverance of evil. I don't want to give away the entire book, so I'l leave this vauge. Author is quite repetitive on some points, for my reading preference so I give 4 vs 5 stars.

Wonderful read of a fascinating man

I've always been a fan of Merv, having grown up watching his talk show. Oh, those wonderful 'theme' shows. What a fascinating and fascinated character he was! And reading this made me wish all the more than I'd had a chance to meet and talk with the man. Parts of his life were downplayed or largely ignored in this book, but it still made for a highly entertaining read.

The man who gave us "Wheel" and "Jeopardy!", Merv

In December 2007, I purchased this book. It took me about a year to finish it, though, but when I did, I learned a lot from a Depression-era boy who years later gave us our two most successful game show franchises, "Wheel of Fortune", and "Jeopardy!"

Before reading this book, I did not know that Merv had been a military reject. Once I read that part, I quickly picked it up. Another foreign subject in this book was that he was a college dropout. Now I know he was a college dropout.

Merv was one of my earliest role models as a baby, all because of "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" Now, I have read all about him. I was saddened to hear of his death in August of 2007, but I wound up continuing to watch his successful shows, and have twice tried out for "Jeopardy!" (I have still not been able to pass the test.)

All in all, a five-star book by Merv.

GREAT TALES AND CHATTER ... UNTIL THE LAST CHAPTER

Like the man who "wrote" it (he had help from co-author David Bender), Merv Griffin's "Making the Good Life Last" is an entertaining, conversational confection chockfull of stories and anecdotes about his life in show business. This book is, in many ways, a sequel to Merv's best-selling autobioraphy of a couple of decades ago. "Good Life" picks up when that tome left off, with Merv reinventing himself as a businessman and, eventually, as one of the world's richest men. There are great Tallulah tales, and delightful stories about Al Pacino, Vanna White, Orson Welles, Clint Eastwood, Cary Grant, Lucille Ball, Eva Gabor, Nancy and Ron, Donald Trump, Ted Koppel and Errol Flynn ... who Merv met while the actor was nude. "Now how shall I put this?" Merv muses. "I think it's fair to say that Flynn brandished a sword both on and off the screen." It's all warm and witty and cozy chatter from someone who feels like a friend. Until the last chapter. There, Merv starts to spout off about how much money he has ... not in dollar amounts, but in boastful brags. There's too much talk about buying jets, yachts, hotels and casinos, of building this house and that house (with "house" sometimes meaning "ranch" or "compound"), of having marble and tile imported from across the world, of collecting horses and priceless art works by French Impressionists and Colorists, of having an associate deposit a check for $273 million ("the interest alone was $50,000 a day"), when most senior citizens at the same bank that day were depositing their monthly Social Security check for "$400 or $500 at most." This is when Merv needs to be tuned out and turned off. "Making the Good Life Last" is good ... until the last drop.

Never a Better Twain Shall Meet

This scholarly and readable life of Twain begins with his thirties and carries the master humorist through the glorious successes and bitter tragedies that would haunt him. Well written and full of insightful analysis into his real character this book brings to life a persoanlity so large that it took a new era (Gilded Age) and two centuries to contain it! For his boyhood try Deep Waters- an equally good review of his wit and life.

Samuel Clemens Unveiled

It's no wonder this book won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. This is a serious, entertaining and informative treatment of one of the greatest American writers, and, in terms of his life and attitude, one of the best representations of 19th century America. In detail that becomes adornment to its subject, the author proceeds to map out the course of Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, as he progresses as a writer and as a person. Great insights are revealed of his social behavior and, inasmuch as possible and believable, his thoughts. This is a great book; a must for any serious reader.

Uncovering The Pain Of Twain

Mark Twain was an easy author to admire but a hard man to love. Justin Kaplan gets at both sides of this singular figure of American letters in this fast-moving if often hyper-analytical and maudlin biography.

To get the negative out of the way early, there's a lot more psychobabble here than I expected. Kaplan's book won a Pulitzer and a National Book Award after its 1966 publication, and maybe I approached it too much with that acclaim in mind. His wife Livy is described when we first meet her as Twain's "superego", and much of the rest of the man's life story is similarly fed through a Freudian prism. There's also a good deal more information about Twain's various failed business ventures and invention gambits than you'd expect, or I think, really need.

Another choice Kaplan made was one I came around to in time, which was to start the book in the middle of Twain's life. When we meet him, Samuel Clemens is coming off his first success, the short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County," and seeking his fortune on the East Coast, where writing talents had their best shot at fame and fortune. Ironically, Clemens found his by leaving the Coast, on a boat with a group of religious pilgrims which would form the basis of his breakthrough first book, "The Innocents Abroad." In the process, he formed the alter ego by which Clemens became famous, Mark Twain.

"He was, at the very least, already a double creature," Kaplan writes. "He wanted to belong, but he also wanted to laugh from the outside."

On the boat, for example, he coddled blue-nosed ladies and made shows of piety while jotting down notes for the book that would send them up for national ridicule. "The pleasure ship was a synagogue, and the pleasure trip was a funeral excursion without a corpse," he wrote. Even so, one of his fellow passengers would become a lifelong confidante and authority figure to Twain, while another would prove Twain's entrée to meeting Livy.

For Kaplan, Twain is all about the conflict between those two halves. Kaplan even makes strained note of the similarity between the words "twain" and "twin," as if it helps explain Clemens' choice of nom de plume. He railed at plutocrats, but craved money more than most. He doted on his children, but was seen by them as remote and foreboding. He was a humanist who cherished enemies more than friends.

The best part of Kaplan's book showcases Twain at his literary peak, high atop his "gingerbread Gothic" manse in Hartford, Connecticut, writing "Life On The Mississippi" and "The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn" in an attic room Kaplan memorably likens to a steamship pilothouse where Twain's connection to America's heartland was formed.

One problem Kaplan seems to have, with which I humbly concur, is that while unbeatable at one-liners ("nubs and snappers," he called them), Twain didn't always produce first-class books. Kaplan doesn't even think much of that celebrated swansong, "The Mysterious Stranger." He spends a great deal more time analyzing the faults of his first, co-written novel, "The Gilded Age" than the merits of "Huckleberry Finn," which seems consigned in this account to being a commercial disappointment banned in Concord, Massachusetts for lack of morals. Even when the sun is shining, Kaplan seems at pains to find the clouds.

Perhaps researching Twain so vigorously caused such a condition. "The secret source of humor itself is not joy but sorrow," Kaplan quotes Clemens saying. "There is no humor in heaven."

If there were indeed two halves to Twain, it's the darker side that gets the most attention here. Kaplan's book will alternately fascinate and repel Twain lovers, but left me feeling a bit too much in the cold.

Wayne M. Sotile, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, has served as Director of Psychological Services at the Wake Forest University Cardiac Rehabilitation Program since 1979. Dr. Sotile is a Fellow of the American Association for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), an Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and an Honorary Fellow in the American Academy of Medical Administrators. With his wife, Mary O. Sotile, he is codirector of Sotile Psychological Associates and Real Talk, Inc., in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he lives.

Chapter One: Begin the Journey

I am a cardiac psychologist. For nearly twenty-five years I have been helping people recover from heart disease by teaching them and their loved ones how to contend with the emotional ravages of the illness. This book is the fruit of countless hours I've spent with thousands of heart patients and their families -- men and women like you, with loved ones like yours. My message will knock your life back onto its feet because I'm going to tell you something about heart disease you may not have known before: it's not the severity of the illness but how you cope with it that will determine how long you will live and how happy you will be. Not only can you survive heart disease, you can actually thrive with it for many, many years. In fact, if you cope well and follow the advice I give you in this book, you can live as long as you would if you didn't have the illness.

That's right: you can live as long as you would if you didn't have the illness. And you can lead a full and vibrant life, a life of challenge and discovery. You don't have to live like an invalid, propped up in a corner of the couch while your days diminish into a series of bland, limited routines. You don't have to tiptoe through your nights and days, anxious that a backfiring truck or a spin on the dance floor will throw you into the hospital with a heart attack. And you don't have to suffer from New Age guilt because you couldn't swallow the diet of the month or stick with the latest exercise fad.

What you do have to do is acknowledge the gift you've received: the infinite bounty of a second chance. The fact that you are holding this book and reading these words confirms your place among the privileged, the lucky ones who got the wake-up call, resisted the urge to slam the snooze button, and chose to embark on the journey toward a newly conscious life. Because living with heart disease is a journey -- a journey forward toward the healthy life you were meant to live, not back to the one you were living when the illness struck. It's a journey you take one moment at a time -- breakfast by breakfast and conversation by conversation, embrace by embrace and, yes, conflict by conflict. It's a journey you'll be taking for the rest of your life -- which, I remind you, can be a long, long time -- and the people who love you the most get to come with you.

That's the thing that astonishes so many of my patients: the degree to which their illness is a family affair. Heart disease can cause a seismic shift in even the most stable relationships, rattling a family's foundation and leaving its members shaky and grim. It's always unsettling but worst when the illness strikes without warning, which happens more often than you might think: All known cardiac risk factors combined account for only three out of four cases of heart illness -- the others are attributed to unknown causes.

If you are like most heart patients, your notion of normal changed forever the instant heart disease invaded your world. Suddenly, nothing was the same for you or your family, and everything ended in a question mark:


• Am I going to die?
• Why did this happen to me?
• What happens now?
• How will we manage?
• Will things ever be the same?


You all probably have had to deal with unfamiliar people (doctors, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, technicians), unfamiliar places (hospitals, waiting rooms), and unpleasant experiences (procedures, tests, surgery). How you manage these experiences -- as a patient and as a family -- will determine the quality of your life and how long you hold on to it. Thriving with heart disease isn't only about a muscle, it's also about how you manage your emotions, your attitude, and the intricate web of human connections, secure and tenuous, that bind you to the people you love and interact with.

And thriving doesn't stop with family relationships: the way a patient interacts with others can determine how long and happily he or she will live. A married loner with no close friends, few acquaintances, and a not-very-serious heart condition may never recover fully, while a quiet person who lives alone but has vibrant friendships and cordial family relations may resume an active life even after a whopper of a heart attack.

That's what pulled Rena and Tom through: strong family relations. The topography of their marriage had changed forever three years earlier, when Rena suffered a myocardial infarction, or heart attack.

Tom stands well over six feet tall, weighs about 230 pounds, and has one of those steel gray crew cuts that makes some men look like unusually mature marines. They had come to my office to talk about how they as a couple were living with heart disease. As Tom rose from the waiting room chair, he offered a large, open hand to Rena. I was struck by her presence; her handshake was as firm as her gaze. Tom spoke first:


"It was simple: I knew Rena was going to die. I was so frightened of losing her, I didn't even allow myself to think she might pull through. I just wanted to try to prepare myself for the worst, so if it happened, it wouldn't be a complete shock.

"In the hospital, I just waited and waited for her to open her eyes. I kept wondering, why did this happen? Rena's family didn't have heart problems. I thought it must be a mistake, that they'd made the wrong diagnosis. The kids came every day, they took off from work...we surrounded each other with love; that's how we got through.

"Rena made it over the first hurdle -- she got out of the hospital. Then we had another surprise -- coming home. Boy, those first few months were a shock. At first I tried to do everything -- the cooking, the laundry, the marketing, everything. Then, later on, I slowly let her take over, little by little."


Now Rena looked up and began to speak:


"The first six months were the worst. Some mornings I'd wake up not caring about anything. One day, I didn't even fix my hair. I remember thinking I must be losing my grip; I'd always paid attention to my appearance. But I figured, what's the difference? I wasn't going anywhere, no one was going to see me except Tom.

"I also worried that I couldn't rely on my body anymore. One day I needed a blanket up in the linen closet, and I was afraid to get up on a step stool to get it down. I thought I'd lose my balance and fall -- off a step stool, for goodness' sake! So I sat down on the floor and cried for half an hour.

"And then there were the panic attacks. Whenever something felt different in my chest area I immediately thought, oh, no, something's happening -- another artery is blocking up, and I'm going to end up in an ambulance. For a few months, I was a nervous wreck.

"Tom and the kids were very worried about me. They didn't let me do anything, even things I wanted to do. One Sunday I got it in my head I wanted to clean out the pantry. It was the first time in weeks I'd felt like doing anything, and it made me happy. The kids were over that day, and, well, they wouldn't let me do it. The more I insisted, the more they fought me. I finally gave up and went to lie down, and Tom and the kids cleaned out the pantry. It took me three weeks to find the oregano because they put stuff back in the wrong place.

"Here they were, trying to spare me from stress and causing me so much aggravation I had to go lie down. I loved them for all they were doing, but I knew I could do more than they thought I could -- especially everyday, normal things."


As Rena and Tom learned, the future is seldom determined at the hospital. The vast majority of heart patients' futures develop gradually, like photographs in processing solution, as they return home and get back to normal -- a normal that may be a far cry from what they knew before. And that's precisely the point: when heart illness strikes, a person must abandon the well-trodden path he or she used to follow, blaze a trail, and begin a journey toward a new way of living. Heart disease is an invitation to create a different way of life -- a new normal -- that heals the heart by tending emotions and mending human connections.

As Tom put it, "We've been married for over forty-two years. We've grown up a lot in that time, and we're still growing. Living with this illness has taught us to keep things in perspective, to be more flexible, and to pay attention to each day we have together. When you do that, life gets better. You know how, early in marriage, sex is such a big deal? I still love sex; it's great. But intimacy is greater."

Starting the Journey

Living long and well with heart disease is like driving cross-country to get home for Thanksgiving: it's a long haul, but the party will be a lot better if you're part of it (also, once you're on the road, you'll realize you're not the only one out there). You'll have long stretches where you fly along, making great progress, but you'll also hit detours and obstacles that make you wonder if you'll ever arrive.

I promise: you can and will arrive if you follow the program in this book, which places in your hands the same tools and techniques my patients receive at the Wake Forest University Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Your program starts now, as you open your mind and embrace two fundamental truths: first, that recovery is a journey you'll be taking for the rest of your life, not a signpost you rolled past when you left the hospital. And second, that heart illness will challenge you and the people close to you to open yourselves to one another as never before -- even when you feel incapable of a civil "good morning" -- and you must rise to the challenge and do it.

I work in a busy cardiac rehab and highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with their recovery from a heart event. It offers simple explanations of what is normal and when to seek help. Suitable for both professionals and lay people.

Thriving with Heart Disease

I ordered this book for my mother she is 84 and had a receint heart attack and stent placed. I had the book delivered straight to her mail box. She received it in just a few days.
The local stores were out of the book and it was not available at the library. She has read and used the book often it has been a great resource for her. She feels like they are talking about her situation. The book has helped transition my mother back to a normal life and given her hope. The book is written in simple terms my mother has no medical back ground and is able to understand well.
