While the highs and lows of Jordan's comeback are known to most basketball fans, Leahy, a Washington Post feature writer who covered Jordan's return, offers an in-depth look at the inner turmoil that plagued the Jordan-led Wizards. In a smartly written, often angry work that is as much a sports story as a psychology study and condemnation of the media that built up the Jordan myth, Leahy not only documents Jordan's performance on the floor, but examines what motivated him to play despite serious knee problems. (At one point, Wizard coach Doug Collins refers to Leahy as a "stalker.") This obsessive reportage resulted in an acclaimed series for the "Post" and is now a book, "When Nothing Else Matters: Michael Jordan's Last Comeback" (Simon & Schuster) -- easily the most fully formed portrait of Jordan ever written and one of the best sports books in recent memory.If you know Jordan from those "Be Like Mike" Gatorade commercials, you are unlikely to recognize the petulant protagonist of "When Nothing Else Matters." Leahy discovers an ailing star on the downward arc of his career -- "moving like a sea captain with a wooden peg for a right leg," he writes at one point. As he declines, Jordan claws at everyone around -- teammates (he calls one teammate a "faggot"), the competition (he lusts to destroy challengers like Kobe Bryant), and most of all, his employer (Wizards owner Abe Pollin). But this Jordan seldom makes the papers, because the sports media are so beholden to Earth's Most Beloved Star they dare not risk alienating him. "Around Jordan power flowed one way," Leahy writes. "Reporters were sharecroppers: They tilled him only at his pleasure."There's plenty of gossip in "When Nothing Matters" -- Leahy doesn't hold back on the tales of Jordan's gambling and infidelities, and David Stern will enjoy the story of the NBA referee who allegedly set Jordan up with a girl -- but in the end, this is a far moremelancholy than tawdry tale. Michael Jordan was undoubtedly the greatest basketball player of his time. It's just a shame it took us so long to find out he was a human being too.

A Milestone Book For Realists

This is a groundbreaking book in many respects. I am an ardent NBA fan but have found it nearly impossible to find 'real' biographies on the real goings-on in NBA locker rooms. I believe most sportswriters are either afraid to anger their sources (many examples of that in this book) or lack the journalistic know how to do in-depth reporting.

I thouroughly enjoyed the book. It paints a detailed picture of an NBA locker room and the dysfunctionalities that go on. I came away with a very clear picture of Jordan as a sad figure in a sense who is self-absorbed, immature and really has little understanding of life beyond the small and plastic world he inhabits. I actually felt somewhat sorry for him by the end of the book. The portrait came as no suprise given the surreal environment and idolic treatment these athletes (who in the big picture put a ball through a hoop for a living though God bless em for it) receive at a very early age. You can't really blame Jordan as he is a product of his stilted environment. On the other hand, it makes those ads and "Be Like Mike' endorsements ring hollow and ironic.

The book is also an interesting study on how fans need athletes to validate themselves. From the Wizards minority owner who basically buys Jordan's aquantance for a piece of his stake in the franchise to the reporters who feel privilaged to ask Jordan a 'staged' question even if they aren't doing any real reporting. To the Wizards (Collins)coach who is so enamored of Jordan that he is afraid to make a move without his approval to the detriment of the team.

This is a book for true NBA or Jordan followers or those interested in the distorted relationship between pro athletes and their fans. I have a lot of respect for this author for daring to accurately report a man-God. It should be noted that the author did not get into any 'sleazy' details of Jordan's life but striclty used his behavior/interactions in the locker room environment to define his subject. The book did make me appreciate the rare elite athlete who still manages to have strong values and character despite the temptations and obstacles in his way.

This Emperor Had No Clothes

I am glad to see this book has already generated a good deal of buzz and reviews. I lived in the DC area during the "Jordan Era" both his management of and play for, the Wizards, and I must say (and perhaps I am biased) that this book is a mostly accurate reflection of what many of us suspected about MJ when he came to town. To wit: (1) He had little/no respect for owner Abe Pollin; (2) He installed flunkies in senior management positions, ostensibly to do the scouting, negotiating, etc he apparently was uninterested in doing; (3) His "return" was one part attempt to restore "buzz" around his name and brand and a second part an attempt to whitewash/hide his shortcomings as an executive by pulling the team to near .500; (4) As soon as he retired, Pollin shivved him and showed him the door.

In short, there are no "winners" or "good guys" in this story, indeed, everyone comes out looking badly. Jordan is portrayed as a distant, arrogant, demeaning teammate who put his own self interest ahead of his team, even as he was holding the Coach's puppet strings and using the media to communicate not-so-thinly veiled threats at the very people he signed/drafted. Pollin comes across as a money-hungry owner who used Jordan to sell tickets and then tossed him overboard roughly 3.5 seconds after his final game. Ultimately, the relationship was one where both parties were USING the other, there was no trust, no sense of team, no sense of "we're all in this together", so why should be be surprised it blew up so quickly.

Leahy has received some heat in other reviews for injecting bias and/or reflecting his own opinion, but hey, THAT'S HIS JOB. He's providing an angle, an opinion, it's his book. MJ or his defenders are free to give their "side" of the story (the jabs at Wilbon are interesting, though not surprising).

The truth is, as an executive, MJ was mediocare at best (an opinion I think supported by the fact that he's received exactly ZERO GM/Pres. of Player Personnel offers since leaving DC) as an executive, made a lot of poor decisions (not trading the #1 for Elton Brand and a pick ... idiotic, any fantasy geek would have made that deal in a heartbeat, dealing for Stack and giving up a good young player in Rip Hamilton, useless signings like Oakley, Laettner, etc .. the list goes on and on). He did not move to DC, rarely was in town (sightings became media events they were so rare), seemed to have an entitlement and perogative about how he did things that hey, if I was an owner, I would be peeved about too. As Leahy points out, MJ had poor/little appreciation for Pollin and the importance he placed on loyalty. Did Pollin use MJ, clearly, and his motives were far from pure, but it's also his team, no one made MJ come to DC.

Before you start crying for MJ and his departure, consider that he got Coach Collins a $10 million severance, payouts for the rest of his personally hand picked lower management and still had his hundreds of millions intact. Indeed, the buzz generated by his return to basketball enriched him, I would think, far more in the long run, than Pollin. Finally, look at what has happened to the Wizards SINCE MJ left. They put in a guy, Ernie Grunfeld, who is actually a qualified/knowledgable GM, he has traded for Jamison, signed Arenas, and helped develop other guys and the team is now on the cusp of a playoff spot. MJ poisoned the well here, and it took people who actually studied and worked hard at putting teams together to fix it.

The perfect coda to MJ's stay in DC was the photo of him leaving MCI after Pollin showed him the door, it's a shot of MJ in his convertible, top down, from behind, you see the Illinois license plate. Very apt summry of his brief stay in Washington.

In these pages, come to know the real Michael Jordan

Published in 2004, author Michael Leahy shares his experiences during Michael Jordan's last comeback to the National Basketball Association.

Leahy's potrayal of Jordan showed a different side of the basketball legend which is not normally seen in the eyes of the public. Jordan, the "the most marketed player in the history of the NBA," was finally..."mortal" and did go through the same trials and tribulations (from a heightened perspective) that we all go through at some point in our lives. Leahy accounts the days wherein Jordan was at his best and would score 35 points over the span of several games to the days wherein he wasn't unstoppable and hit his career lows of 8 and 2 points respectively.

What stood out for me was Jordan's lambasting of players who didn't play up to his standards. Leahy quotes Jordan on numerous occasions wherein he would lambast teammates. Coach Fred "Tex" Winter, an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers and former assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls summed it up best, "you either work hard or Michael has no use for you."

But the one paragraph in Leahy's entire book which rocked my very foundation of emulating Michael Jordan was the following:

"His people had held him up as a man to be emulated, making Jordan more than a half-billion in endorsement dollars in the process...he had raised the bar on his behavior during 17 years of unremitting self-promotion, in campaigns approved by the Jordan camp and coordinated by Nike and other corporate sponsors that elevated him from great athlete to hero and, finally, to moral symbol.

...when you present yourself as virtuous in years of ad campaigns and TV commercials, you will be fairly held in time to that standard. Fairly held because uou have sold your basketball shoes to people plunking down in excess of $100 not merely for a chance at better Ups but for a way to rub up against your aura, to feel a tiny sense of you in that admittedly silly way people feel when they wish to emulate anybody, to be inspired by your class and elegance, your morality and grace, as they've heard it told. And if some of that was artifice, then so, too, was everything you sold with your likeness on it."

Disturbing but quite true, personally, I have seen myself on many occasions wanting to "be like Mike." I've bought the shoes, worn the clothes, gotten the cards, read the books...and it is only now I realized. What about me? Leahy's book showed me that. In the years that I have been collecting "Jordan" in order to be inspired, all I needed to do in the end was look in the mirror in order to be inspired.

This is a great book that puts any not only Michael Jordan's life in perspective but also that of your own, especially if you are a Jordan fan who has collected his paraphernalia over the years.

GREAT!!

Purchased for our foster kids, with the full book. One could have cared less and just went through the motions, the other read the entire book as well as completed the workbook and took it all to heart. I am happy to report that with the proper parenting and the aid of this series, the child is going home to live with his real father and is overall a million times more happy after the self reflection that is shown in this book.
(Both were young teenagers, 13 &15 the one does not feel anything is wrong with his mindset, the other KNEW he needed change and strong guidance in his mindset change... One is going home successfully the other is a LONG SHOT from success). If you have kids that are "troubled" or in need of a mindset change, I STRONGLY suggest you give Covey a chance to assist you!

I tried teaching my kids the 7 Habits from Steven Coveys book, but a lot of the focus was on business and adult issues. This really puts the subject matter in a new light for teens; and is definitely the best way to teach your teens the benefits of living a 7 Habits Life.

Authors Jason Berry (Lead Us Not into Temptation) and Gerald Renner (retired reporter for the Hartford Courant) team up for this highly accusatory report on the sex abuse scandal within the Catholic Church. The "vows of silence" speak to the Church's self-protective secrecy that made it possible to ignore the rampant abuse, despite all the early accusations and red flags. To reveal the history and scope of this problem, Berry and Renner expertly researched the parallel lives of two key players. The first one is Thomas Doyle, portrayed as an American hero priest. Doyle first heard about priests sexually abusing children in the early 1980s. Doyle immediately started to confront his superiors and blow the whistle at every turn. As early as 1983 Doyle wrote that the Church's secrecy caused any and all wrongdoings to be "denied, covered up and rationalized with equal zeal." Years later he became an advocate for! victim restitution, testifying against the Church in numerous court cases. The second character is more like the antichrist: Father Marcial Maciel, who was the influential founder of the cult-like order of Legionaries of Christ and accused of being a particularly cruel and long-term sexual predator.

This parallel lives approach makes for compelling storytelling, but it also creates a disjointed approach with much skipping around in time. What sets this apart from yet-another-expose about the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal is the in-depth reporting on the militaristic Legionaries of Christ, an extremely powerful and conservative order of priests and laymen that are affiliated with a worldwide web of prep schools and universities. This impassioned exposé explores the history of priestly pedophilia scandals, and their roots in what the authors portray as the Church's blinkered sexual morés and arrogant hierarchy, through profiles of two emblematic Church figures. The first is Thomas Doyle, an American priest who investigated abuses in the early 1980s; when his recommendations for reform were ignored, Doyle broke with the hierarchy and began testifying about the Church's cover-up. Doyle's antithesis is Marcial Maciel Degollado, founder of the Legionaries of Christ, a secretive, fanatically disciplined order of conservative priests and laymen with a chain of universities and schools that critics liken to a cult. Lionized by John Paul II, Maciel is also a pedophile and Demerol addict, according to at least nine former priests and seminarians who claim they were victimized by him. Investigative journalists Berry and Renner build on years of research and hundreds of interviews to paint a portrait of ecclesiastical corruption. They blame the Church's sexual doctrines-particularly the rule on priestly celibacy, which, they contend, has driven away heterosexual men and fostered a pathologically libertine "gay priest culture" at some American seminaries. The result is an atmosphere of silence and hypocrisy that simultaneously condemns and tolerates both homosexuality and priestly sexual abuse, in which an authoritarian Church hierarchy, reaching up to the Vatican, protects pedophiles, and buries accusations in labyrinthine legal maneuvers. The book's sprawling, somewhat disorganized narrative sometimes bogs down amidst incidental characters and insignificant details, and the panorama of sordid sex crimes, quasi-fascist brainwashing and cynical Vatican mandarins may lead critics to accuse the authors, professed Catholics themselves, of retailing lurid anti-Catholic clichés. But their exhaustive reporting adds up to a disturbing indictment of a deeply troubled Church, and this book will no doubt cause much discussion and controversy.

Investigative journalists Berry and Renner's accessible resource on the sexual-abuse controversy in the Catholic Church is, on the one hand, the heroic story of priest and canon lawyer Thomas Doyle, a champion of abuse victims in their prolonged struggle with an often intransigent power structure, and, on the other, an expose of the secretive Legion of Christ and its lay counterpart, Regnum Christi, and legion founder Marciel Maciel Degollado, himself an accused abuser. Doyle, in his relations with victims and survivors, embodies what the church could be, while Degollado and the quasi-military legion stand for what it has become. The book effectively documents abuse and the role of secrecy in sustaining it, though Berry and Renner weaken their case by returning repeatedly to a largely undefined concept of a "gay clergy culture." Their evidence points to an institutional culture in which secrecy has underwritten abuse and the protection of abusers quite apart from sexual orientation. Legion of Christ, Stealthy, offical, 'mainstream' Catholic.

Readers of the DA VINCI CODE will love this book. But, whereas Brown's book is fiction and exaggeration, this is truth and fact.
The general reader will find enough background to be able to understand specific Catholic terms and the workings of the Catholic Church, Roman Curia, etc.
As an [ex] member of the Legion of Christ for almost 24 years I can state that the information on the Legion is substantially correct. Despite being 'outsiders' to this secretive organization, the authors have done well in penetrating Legion fences and defences. I commend the wealth of knowledge and painstaking research that went into this book. I can personally vouch that the authors checked and re-checked their stories and sources to get the facts straight. They have done an admirable job of fitting all the pieces together into a cohesive whole that makes fascinating reading.
Critical readers interested in the Legion of Christ should compare the book's contents with the official website of this Catholic religious congregation, legionariesofchrist.org, and with info and opinions on regainnetwork.org and other pages to get a feeling for this group and make up their own minds. They will find differences, not contradictions in these sources. As you read you, too, will be asked to form opinions, critique and form judgments about truth or lies.

One of the unusual aspects in this work which is sure to fan the flames of the small but intense debate already raging around the Legion of Christ is that it highlights a respectable, powerful and stealthy official religious order of the Roman Catholic Church. The Legion is like the Mexican version of the controversial [Spanish] Opus Dei. Both, according to researchers, possess 'cult-like features'.
I am hoping that conservative Catholic readers will not get side-tracted by Catholic infighting issues such as mandatory celibacy & homsexuality and the role they have played in this debacle. All readers can find a wealth of solid information and facts, highlighting for the first time for English speakers the reality of the Legion of Christ --a 'mainstream', respectable and official Catholic organization-- whose controversial methods have already spawned at least three full length books in Spanish [see regainnetwork for further information].

This book is not just another scandal mongering report; it is a serious work of investigative reporting that has taken years to compose and is of great importance for Catholic and non-Catholic alike. It would be a pity, e.g., if people read The Da Vinci Code, a FICTION thriller, and do not read this TRUE STORY.

It will help you understand the complex internal workings of the Church, how accusations and cases are handled and resolved, how decisions are made, the interplay between laity, priests, bishops, the Vatican, the public and the press, etc.

There may be one or two isolated points of view in the book that some orthodox Catholics might quibble with but OVERALL THIS IS A SERIOUS, EXTREMELY WELL RESEARCHED AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK ABOUT THE

PEDOPHILE ABUSE 'SCANDAL'

A Gift to the Church

I lived in a rectory with Father Juan Vaca, a major character in this book, 15 years ago. He poured his heart out to me about the abuse he now describes and was wounded to the heart. Those who love the church love the truth, this book tells the truth. I hope it is a beginning of a cleansing of our church and the replacement of a sick clerical culture with true gospel values. We priests must demand integrity of our leaders, it is the only way to restore the good name of the church. I would like to thank the authors, and especially Father Thomas Doyle who have helped to bring the cleansing light of day to this dark moment in the history of our church. I couln't put it down.

Ideas and Paragraphs

Effective Paragraphs

A paragraph is a group of sentences that relate to one main idea. If the sentences do not help develop the same main idea, the paragraph seems disorganized, and the writer's meaning is unclear.

Incorrect: Group of sentences that do not relate to the same main idea:

Houseplants make a home more beautiful, but many people find them difficult to take care of. I water my houseplants once a week. There are many different kinds of houseplants. If you are buying a houseplant as a gift, consider how much light the person's home gets.

In the example above, each sentence is about houseplants, but there is no main idea. In the paragraph below, however, each sentence supports one idea: helping houseplants adjust to a new home.

Correct: Paragraph with sentences that relate to one main idea:

Houseplants need help to adjust to a new environment. Your home is probably less bright and humid than a greenhouse or plant store. Therefore, when you get a new houseplant, keep it near a south-facing window at first. Move it away from the light over a period of four weeks. Use a humidifier to make the air in your home more humid. These actions will help avoid the loss of foliage that often occurs when plants change locales.

One paragraph should stop and a new one begin when the main idea shifts. In the example below, the first four sentences describe what road rage is, while the last four sentences tell how to react to road rage. The writer should have started a new paragraph with sentence 5.

Incorrect: One paragraph that should be divided into two paragraphs:

(1) Road rage is an episode of violent behavior that takes place when one driver's actions anger another driver. (2) Young males are the most likely to lose their cool on the road. (3) Most road rage incidents take place during rush hour, when people often get frustrated. (4) Warm weather is another factor in road rage. (5) If you're a victim of an aggressive driver, try to stay calm. (6) Don't react or make eye contact. (7) Try not to brake or swerve in retaliation. (8) These actions will only infuriate the other driver, and you might lose control of your car.

Sometimes the ideas in two paragraphs really belong in one:

Incorrect: Two paragraphs that should be combined:

To make chicken broth, boil a pot of water. Take some chicken, onions, parsnips, carrots, and herbs, and wrap them up in cheesecloth.

Make sure it is real cotton cheesecloth, or you won't be able to eat the broth! Simmer the cheesecloth-wrapped vegetables and chicken in the water for several hours; then remove them. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Clear and Organized Writing • Practice 1.1

A. Directions: Read each group of sentences. If there is a main idea, underline it. If there is no main idea, write "No MI."

____ 1. The pharmacist at the local drugstore is very helpful. She can always get the medicines we need. She arranges deliveries of our prescriptions when we're sick. When we don't have money, she lets us pay the next time. Many people have written to thank her.

____ 2. Keep your toolbox well equipped, and you'll always be able to make home repairs. Common home repairs include replacing lighting fixtures and fixing furniture. The community center offers a class on this subject. You can pay someone to do home repairs.

____ 3. Some people don't vote because they think their vote doesn't count. However, elections have been won by just a few hundred votes. If people don't vote, they are giving up their voice. Every vote counts, so let your voice be heard and vote!

____ 4. When you are traveling, it's a good idea to mark your luggage clearly. Put a luggage tag on every piece you intend to bring, including hand luggage like backpacks. To recognize your luggage quickly, put a brightly colored ribbon on it.

____ 5. Listening to music can benefit you in many ways. When you are feeling stress, music can help soothe and relax you. When you need energy, rock 'n' roll or hip-hop can give you a boost. If you have a baby or small child, soft music can help lull the child to sleep.

B. Questions 6 and 7 refer to the following paragraphs.

The Common Cold

(A)

(1) How frequently you get colds depends on your age. (2) The average young adult gets two to four colds a year. (3) Adults over 60 have fewer than one cold a year, while children have six to ten colds annually. (4) Colds are caused by viruses. (5) Contrary to popular belief, being cold will not cause you to get a cold. (6) Vitamin C is thought to prevent colds, but there is no proof.

(B)

(7) Because there is no cure for the common cold, prevention is key. (8) Washing your hands is the best way to avoid getting a cold. (9) Encourage others who have colds to sneeze into a tissue and throw it away immediately.

(C)

(10) Refrain from touching your eyes and nose, and stay far from people who have colds.

A. Directions: Write topic sentences for each of the following paragraphs.

Weather satellites send us information about weather around the world. Thanks to satellite TV, we have an ever-widening range of programs to choose from. Satellites even play a role in long-distance telephone communication.

2. _____________________________________________________________________

First of all, stock prices are falling. Second, home sales have slowed to a crawl. Finally, many consumers have cut back on big purchases such as cars, home improvements, and vacations.

3. _____________________________________________________________________

According to the new dress code, employees of the library may now wear "semi-casual" clothing. Khakis, blue jeans with no holes, and other slacks are acceptable for men and women. Skirts must be knee-length or longer. Sandals are acceptable in the summer. Employees are requested not to wear gym shoes.

Topic Sentences in Paragraphs

Every paragraph should have a topic sentence that states the main idea. The other sentences in the paragraph are supporting details. These details tell more about the topic sentence. The topic sentence usually appears at the beginning of the paragraph, though it may appear elsewhere.

A topic sentence must do two things:

• Tell the topic, or subject, of the paragraph

• State the central point that the writer wants to make about the topic

In the paragraph below, the topic sentence is underlined. Notice how the topic sentence tells the subject of the paragraph (graffiti in the neighborhood) and states the central point about the topic (graffiti is a serious problem in the neighborhood and should be addressed).

EXAMPLE

We need to do more to stop the problem of graffiti in our neighborhood. Recently, several bus stops and the exterior walls of many buildings have been defaced with unsightly graffiti. The neighborhood is fast becoming a much less desirable place to live. As a result, prospective renters feel frightened and look elsewhere.

A topic sentence should not be too specific or too general. If it is, readers won't know what the overall point is. A topic sentence like "The market is covered with gang symbols" would be too specific for the paragraph above. "There is graffiti in our neighborhood" would be too general.

Main Idea Statements in Essays

Just as every paragraph should have a topic sentence, so every essay should have a main idea statement. Whereas a topic sentence states the main idea, or "point," of a single paragraph, a main idea statement expresses the central point of all the paragraphs in an essay. In the essay below, the main idea statement is underlined. Notice that while the main idea statement appears in the first paragraph, it is not the first sentence.

EXAMPLE

While graffiti is indeed a serious problem facing our neighborhood, other issues also need to be addressed. Two of the most pressing neighborhood issues are the crime rate and the lack of decent housing.

In recent months, crime has increased. For example, a number of muggings have occurred. As a result, residents are nervous about going out at night. The number of apartment break-ins has increased as well. We need a stronger police presence to combat the crime problem.

In addition, much of the housing in this neighborhood is in poor condition. Every day, residents are put in danger by peeling paint, broken locks, and rundown fences. We must put pressure on landlords to resolve their tenants' complaints, perhaps by showing them that, in the long run, it is in their financial interest to do so.

If we do not act immediately, our neighborhood will decline even more. Therefore, I recommend that we form a community task force to tackle these issues. We should ask our city councilwoman to be an advocate for us. With full participation of community members, we will be on our way to a safer, more livable neighborhood.

At one point in this final book of the Dark Tower series, the character Stephen King (added to the plot in Song of Susannah) looks back at the preceding pages and says "when this last book is published, the readers are going to be just wild." And he's not kidding.

After a journey through seven books and over 20 years, King's Constant Readers finally have the conclusion they've been both eagerly awaiting and silently dreading. The tension in the Dark Tower series has built steadily from the beginning and, like in the best of King's novels, explodes into a violent, heart-tugging climax as Roland and his ka-tet finally near their goal. The body count in The Dark Tower is high. The gunslingers come out shooting and face a host of enemies, including low men, mutants, vampires, Roland's hideous quasi-offspring Mordred, and the fearsome Crimson King himself. Satisfied, but also sad that after 22 years, nearly 4,000 pages, and seven installments, this archetypal fantasy quest series has ended. As in Song of Susannah, Dark Tower’s predecessor, King pens stunning set pieces, invents cataclysmic battles, and touches on familiar themes of good vs. evil. His writing is as powerful as ever—just imagine a demonic Mordred devouring his mother. But if there’s unanimous admiration for King’s genius, there’s no consensus about Dark Tower. Some critics argue that each piece of the convoluted plot fits into King’s larger vision. Others call the work imperfect for this lofty ambition of a greater whole. Some view King’s insertion of himself as a character as brilliant while others fault it as pretentious. But King fans and novices alike will find Dark Tower a "fitting capstone to a uniquely American epic" (Washington Post). Just don’t start in the middle.

Where are the stories from the individual issues, Marvel??

As a huge Dark Tower fan I was ecstatic when I first heard news of this comic series and, even though the story itself is mostly a re-telling of Roland's flashback story from WIZARD AND GLASS, it was still very enjoyable. I wish that I had just stuck with buying the individual issues instead of the hardcover in addition.
What I loved most about the individual issues were the stories that Robin Furth wrote at the end of each issue which were really interesting and really helped flesh out some of the mythology previously established in the book series (Arthur Eld's backstory, the forging of Roland's guns, the creation of Maerlyn's Rainbow, Rhea's backstory, Jonas's backstory, , Roland's TRUE relationship to the Crimson King, etc.). I enjoyed the story enough that I felt warranted in buying the hardcover so I could read it in one convenient collection.
HOWEVER, Marvel, for some reason I cannot imagine (other than to save money by cutting down on the number of pages) DID NOT include these stories in the hardcover. There is a nice collection of sketches and alternate covers but not a single one of the stories from the issues. GODDAMN is that annoying. I pretty much had no reason to buy this hardcover, since, if I want to read any of those nifty back stories I now have to dig up the individual issues, so I might as well read those instead.
Way to drop the ball, Marvel.
From now on, before buying any Marvel comic collection I'll have to wait until somebody else I know gets it first to find out if I'm being gypped on material that should have been in there in the first place. I'm sure you'll release the SUPER DELUXE EDITION FAN COLLECTION when the second comic series begins in February, containing those stories that should have been in this one, following the film studios in double-dipping popular comic releases instead of just releasing the better collection in the first place. I really hope that when the hardcover collection for the second series comes out the sales are as terrible as the duping of your fans because they realized how you suckered them the first time around.

To anyone interested in reading the story do yourself a favor and buy the individual seven issues so you can get the stories in the end. If you're a fan of the DT books you won't regret getting them over this abysmal hardcover.

Very Mixed Feelings

Well, this is a difficult review to write. Like many reviewers here, I've been reading this series from its inception, since I was a young man (about Jakes age). It has remained one of my favorite series, and each new volume was awaited with a barely containable anticipation.

I agree with so many of the glowing reviews of this book.

And I agree with so many of the disappointed reviews of this book as well. I am completely conflicted.

However, what it boils down to is this: The story lost the breadth and scope that made it so epic for me in the early volumes. The Tower was the center of ALL WORLDS! An infinite number of universes hung in the balance. This wasn't your average quest story, this was a story about ALL quests, in ALL times. King Arthur, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Tain, Ulysses, the Good the Bad and the Ugly...all of these epics found an echo here. Billions upon billions of existences were hanging in the balance between what we were lead to believe was an epic evil (one that found its way into many of Kings stories) and the Gunslinger and his Ka Tet. The wheels of fate worked to bring about the central struggle of all times and places to a boiling point that we could not even begin to conceive of. How could the stakes get any higher? In all honesty, how could any writer fill such a grand expectation? In the first book, Roland has a vision, given him by Flagg, of ascending through the universes to emerge in a single blade of grass at the foot of a rose. The scope of what was at stake was never more beautifully crafted than that section of the first book.

By the end of the tale, I can find no trace of that scope, that scale, those horrendous stakes. They are gone. The book narrowed its focus down to one man, and his personal Demon, the Tower. Now, taken as that, as the story of Roland's addiction, this is a great piece of work. But, taken as the conclusion to the tale to end all tales, the archetypal struggle to save existence itself, I find nothing satisfying at all. The last three books took the series down this different path, and it's not a path that satisfies the thirst he created in me all those years ago. Somehow the center of the very fabric of reality became a backdrop and prop in the story of a single man. Not even man in line with the infinite, or a man connected to the infinite...just the life of a single man.

And, like the others, I find the dispatch of the villains extremely poorly done. In a sense, we care about the villains as much as the heroes. They should play as much of a part in the universal archetypal struggle as they do in most myths, but here, they are reduced to afterthoughts, and poor afterthoughts at that. This was the most disappointing part to me. You will still read this book, if you read the series, but if, like me, you were hoping for the infinite to find its way back into the story, I advise you to narrow your focus...then you may find the book you were looking for.

The pros much outweigh the cons

It looks like most reviewers have this pretty well covered, but I'd like to throw in my 2 cents, mostly because I've spent so much time reading these books and it just plain feels right.

I'll start by saying that this book is not perfect, and there were times when I was convinced that the story would end horribly. So why do I give it 5 stars? I feel that what was good or great about the book is enough for me to dismiss what annoyed me about it. As with most reviews, there will be many SPOILERS ahead, so go read the book first if you haven't.

I can cover what truly bothered me pretty quickly; King's importance in the plot and Flagg's death. Not that I need a 150 page battle between Roland and Flagg, but to be so easily dispatched by a child who would later prove to be absolutely no threat to Roland seems wrong. Was this really the best that Roland's lifelong enemy could do? I don't know, it just doesn't add up. As for King, I didn't like his part in the plot during Song of Susannah (narcissistic) and was hoping it would not dominate the final volume, which it doesn't. I will admit that it didn't turn out as bad as I feared (I half expected Stephen King to be in the top room of the Tower), and I do appreciate that it ties the story to reality through something other than the fictional Tet Corporation in NY. While this is nice, I could have done without King ever having been in the story.

Others were bothered by the quick deaths of Mordred and the Crimson King. I wasn't. Mordred may have been powerful, but he was still a child; and a sick, dying child at that. He had to make an ill-advised move out of desperation, and I think it was wonderful that Oy was able to die defending Roland. As for the Crimson King, while the battle may have been brief, it was still exciting and not without great word play between Roland and the CK.

Ok, so most of us want opinions and theories on the end, right? I will admit that I very much liked the ending from the get-go, but I have had to digest it for a few days before really knowing what to make of it. I suggest anyone else that has recently finished the book do the same. In doing so, I have realized that this ending has evoked a lot more emotion and thought from me than I expected, and clearly almost everyone else who has read this book has had the same experience, for better or worse. In my opinion, this alone is proof that the ending is very powerful.

So, let's just say it, we find out that Roland has been repeating his journey from the Mohaine Desert, where we first meet him in book I. Why is this a good ending? It puts the entire story in perspective. Roland, while heroic, has been cold hearted throughout the saga. He seems to be learning to love, particularly in the case of his adopted son Jake, as well as the rest of his ka-tet. Would we have ever guessed from the pages of "The Gunslinger" or even "The Drawing of the Three" that Roland would have such an emotional reaction to Susannah finally leaving him at the end of the story? Probably not. The world had moved on, a world that had been "full of love and light", and the gunslinger that we meet in book I is a hero, but can't be described as "full of love".

During this journey, Roland has accomplished his purpose according to prophecy, which is to save the Tower. I personally believe that he has probably accomplished this in the past journeys, but it doesn't really matter. The Tower, it seems, is more than just an anchor for existence; it is holy, and will judge those who enter it. When Roland arrives in the Mohaine once again, he is given the Horn of Eld. This can signify many things, but I believe that it signifies that he has pleased the Tower and this will be his final journey. King appends Browning's poem, which has Roland blowing the "slug horn" at the end of his journey. It could be that Browning's poem actually IS the final journey, meaning that the end of Roland's quest is actually right there for you to read about, or it could just be a vision of what his final journey will be like. I think it can go either way, the point is that we know that Roland will have peace, and soon.

Need proof? Let's look back to Jake's final death, a sad scene that will bring even the most cynical reader to tears in light of life's harsh truths. In this scene, Roland promises that he will sacrifice himself to save Stephen King rather than Jake, and his decision is made when he jumps from a moving vehicle to do just that. We all know how it turns out, but the point is that the gunslinger has changed since first letting Jake drop into the abyss in book I. I believe this, along with the care he gave to the rest of his ka-tet toward the end of the journey is what finally pleased the Tower, which awards him with the Horn of Eld. When Roland arrives at the Tower in Browning's poem, the spectators (roses in King's story) in the final stanza are "met to view the last of [him]". I think that King interprets the last of Roland as in the last time that he will arrive at the Tower. After all, King does state earlier in the book that there is "only one place for the poem", which is at the end, as the poem reveals Roland's final journey.

I don't want to make light of the sadness that comes with this ending, because it is certainly sad. The hope combined with sadness and the endless possibilities are what makes this ending so brilliant. I think I've covered the main point, but perhaps Roland has still more to learn and atone for on his final journey, and there are other things to consider. Did time rewind (which his watch rewinding as he approaches the tower and the re-installment of the Man in Black would suggest) or was he simply placed back in the desert? Will he meet Jake again on this journey? Has he learned enough to save Jake rather than palaver with Walter? Are Roland's enemies (Flagg, the CK, etc) so desperate to kill him because they are caught in his loop and aware of it? Could the Horn of Eld symbolize the line of Eld, meaning that Roland is to save Jake thereby restoring "love and light" into his world (and also ensuring that his son will continue in the line of Eld) before the Tower will let him rest? I could go on and on with these, and some of them may be reaching, but I think that if you believe that the Tower has finally begun to award his progress during his damnation then you can believe that he will be able to right all wrongs.

I will miss reading these books, I hope the rest of you take as much from it as I did. Long days and pleasant nights.

a great book deserves a great production

Hemingway's work here is very valuable but the book has a small typeface and it is printed in grey rather than black, so it is awkward to read unless your eyes are perfect. Also the book is heavier than I think it needs to be. Among Hemingway's best work his short stories stand out most, and these articles are worth having along with them. My favourites are about skiing in Switzerland and also Christmas in Europe. The writing should have five stars.

Ernest Hemingway oftens gets a bum rap in literary circles. Sometimes it is at the hands of semi-clever critics whose only writing credits come from the venom they spew. A pity actually because if we latch on to the opinions of others without taking the time of forming our own then we just may miss out on more than discovery. So reviews, even this one, should be taken with a grain of salt.
BY-LINE HEMINGWAY is a good look at the early work of one of the icons in the American literary world. What you find here is some of his newspaper pieces as well as some later short magazine articles that span 30 years and a long lost era. Personally, I think it is one of the best introductions you'll find on the writer and his view of the times. Often, in less that 1,000 words, you'll get a glimpse of how he became one of the leading writers of his time and perhaps, like me, be impressed how well he did it. You'll also get to see the origins of his style and early character development.
In my semi-humble opinion (next to A MOVEABLE FEAST) this is my favorite Hemingway book. But hey, this is just one man's opinion. Buy the book, read it yourself, and then come back here and offer up your view.
