Could Confucius hit a curveball?
Could Yoda block the plate?
Can the Dalai Lama dig one out of the dirt?
No, there is only one Zen master who could contemplate the circle of life while rounding the bases.

Who is this guru lurking in the grand old game? Well, he's the winner of ten World Series rings, a member of both the Hall of Fame and the All-Century Team, and perhaps the most popular and beloved ballplayer of all time. And without effort or artifice he's waxed poetic on the mysteries of time (“It gets late awful early out there”), the meaning of community (“It's so crowded nobody goes there anymore”), and even the omnipresence of hope in the direst circumstances (“It ain't over ‘til it's over”).

It's Yogi Berra, of course, and in What Time Is It? You Mean Now? Yogi expounds on the funny, warm, borderline inadvertent insights that are his trademark. Twenty-six chapters, one for each letter, examine the words, the meaning, and the uplifting example of a kid from St. Louis who grew up to become the consummate Yankee and the ultimate Yogi.

From Publishers Weekly
Offering advice that does and doesn't make sense, baseball-great-turned-author Yogi Berra along with coauthor Dave Kaplan has penned a new tome, What Time Is It? You Mean Now? Advice for Life from the Zennest Master of Them All. For Berra, it's apparently not over yet; he appears to have plenty of knowledge to share on subjects as diverse as the importance of attitude in life to the plusses of exercising regularly. Each short chapter begins with a quote, such as "I Ain't in a Slump. I'm Just Not Hitting" and "It Gets Late Early Out There"; the strange quips are followed by brief anecdotes that explain to some degree just what Berra means. For example, his statement, "It Was a Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity, and I've Had a Couple of Those" leads off the chapter on chances and breaks. According to Berra, opportunities are "always going to be out there" and may appear out of the blue. The short, sweet advice in this book will appeal to the young and old.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This pleasing book is a romp through the alphabet, from "I Ain't in a Slump. I'm Just Not Hitting" to "You Saw Dr. Zhivago? Why? Aren't You Feeling Well?" Vignettes filled with Yogisms-alleged and real-transcend the baseball diamond and shoot from the hip about life. Berra's reminiscences convey lessons about character through commentary rather than lecture. Readers who don't know the man from his baseball days will recognize him from ads and TV interviews, and they'll enjoy his bite-sized pieces of advice. His experiences with some of the most renowned sports icons lend credibility (as well as flavor) to his thoughts about focus, ethics, teamwork, and gratitude, plus the difference between matters you can shrug off or that he considers worth the sweat. This is a great title for readers who need a dose of confidence or a refresher about fair play and respect (of self and others).

Not a memoir, exactly, this book rests somewhere between humor and good advice.

I only like books I'm going to like
By Travis Newman
I still dont know what inspired me to buy this book, but after every page, I was glad I did. This book was a very unique combination of philosophy, self-help, humor, historical sports and general good writing. I had never been familiar with Yogi Berra other than some of his more famous quote but I understand his way of thinking now and I believe some of the secrets to life lie between the covers of this book.
The book never gets dry, points arent beaten to death and he doesn't try to cram his personal way of thinking down your throat. I like that and really was able to take more out of this book because it approaches everything in a very level-headed and laid back way. There were a lot of interesting stories that presented a nice way to explain a situation. I also appreciated the fact that there were references to very recent happenings as of 2002. There were also some comical and cartoonish illustrations that started off or ended each chapter and the chapter names were "Yogi-isms" which was also a nice touch.
The only problem I had with this book was that I ended up reading it too fast because I couldn't put the thing down. I was very impressed with Yogi Berra, he is truly the man, the myth, the legend that people have made him out to be and I believe that meeting him one day has just been put on my to-do list. As far as the book goes, I highly recommend it. It is a smooth reading book that you will enjoy and recall upon in the future. As I stated, I only like books I'm going to like, and this was one of them.

Yogi takes time out from life to explain it all for you
By Lawrance Bernabo
When it comes to the wit and wisdom of Yogi Berra you have to realize that are two types of Berraisms that you have to keep separate. First there are his classic examples of logic, where they sound wrong but they make sense, such as "Ninety percent of this game is mental and the other half is physical" and "It ain't over `till its over." For example, the latter works because "over" has two different meanings in that sentence, which reflects the fact that baseball does not have a clock. Second there are those that are simply the man misspeaking, such as "I want to thank everybody for making this night necessary" and "You saw Dr. Zhivago? Why? Aren't you feeling well?" Do not mistake the two forms because there is a major difference. The first category is the important one because it proves that while he was uneducated Lawrence Peter Berra was one of the smartest people to ever walk on a baseball diamond. You be sure to distinguish between the two types of sayings that serve as the basis for this book "What Time Is it? You Mean Now?: Advice for Life from the Zennest Master of Them All." (The title would fall in the second category for my money.)
All of this, of course, assumes that Yogi actually did say any particular comment in the first place (we give the man the benefit of the doubt although he admits he did not say everything he has said). There are twenty-six of these sayings, arranged in alphabetical order using the most liberal of standards¸ each with a black and white illustration by Alan Dingman. We are then provided with several pages of reflections and commentary by Yogi, which work in stories from his family life and baseball career. I wonder whether Yogi was actually given these sayings and then proceeded to hold forth on this thoughts or whether Dave Kaplan interviewed the Hall of Fame catcher and then cut and pasted them into this volume. Not that it makes much of a difference, but I am curious. The main thing here is not the recycled sayings, most of which I have heard before in my consumption of all things Yogi (in the fourth grade there were three of us with the same name and I had a catcher's mitt so I was actually called "Yogi" for a year), but to hear what he has to say about the mysteries of time, the meaning of community, and the omnipresence of hope in the direst circumstances (and you thought this would just be light reading). Smart move of Yao Ming in one of his first commercial to team up with Yogi, the most loved and loveable sports figure in the United States today.

"Just let them go out and play and have fun."
By Jerry Guild
This little book is a great read and full of down to earth ideas that will be usefulto the readers in their everyday lives. We have all heard of the one-liners attributed to Yogi.Even if you are still up in the air whether he actually said all these things;you'll really see the thoughts behind these statements.

It's hard to believe that there was ever any other Baseball player who had more love for the game, and that was from the days when he and Joe Garagolia played pick-up ball as kids in St.Louis, all the way through the major leagues, and now in his retirement years. Not only that, you'll see from this book that nobody appreciated more the privilege he had to make a wonderful life and living "playing a kids game".

Yogi tells us the things that helped him through life and he explains the principles as well as any professionally trained person could do.

Most of all,he doesn't preach. he just tells us what has worked for him and should work for anyone ,through his years of observing life.In his own words,he sums it all up with:

"You can observe a lot by watching."

Thanks,Yogi, for all the enjoyment and fun you have given so many of over the years;and also for putting your thoughts in this terrific little book.

Tracy Ellison, the star of Omar Tyree’s Flyy Girl and For the Love of Money, returns in this bestselling novel, Boss Lady.

Everybody’s favorite flyy girl is a little bit older, a whole lot wiser, and just as sassy as ever. After a series of triumphs in the world of letters and acting, Tracy takes on the dazzling world of Hollywood’s A-list players to film a project close to her heart.

Told from the point of view of Tracy’s cousin and personal assistant, Vanessa, Boss Lady chronicles the trials and tribulations of adapting the story of Tracy Ellison’s life. In this novel, Flyy Girl is becoming a major motion picture and Tracy is prepared to do anything and everything to tell her story and to make sure it's done right, from screenwriting to producing to designing. In the meantime, she’s also juggling the highs and lows of her famously turbulent love life. Is it better to remain single and committed to her career? Or is she ready to take the plunge and embrace the married-with-children life?

Written with Omar Tyree’s irresistible urban style, Boss Lady finds the author’s best-loved character at the top of her game, thoroughly in charge, and taking life strictly on her own terms.

From Publishers Weekly
Tracy Ellison Grant is in charge again in Tyree's latest Flyy Girl novel (after For the Love of Money and Flyy Girl), this time as mentor to her go-getter younger cousin, Vanessa Tracy Smith, who narrates this glitzy urban story about the payoff of hard work. Tracy Grant rose to fame earlier with her autobiography Flyy Girl, which she parlayed into a booming career as a screenwriter, actress and producer. Now, an adoring and ambitious 16-year-old Vanessa moves from North Philly to L.A., and the novel tracks her three-year meteoric rise as Tracy's personal assistant and protégée to Hollywood powerbroker. Vanessa quickly learns the Hollywood game and takes the initiative to create a Flyy Girl franchise, including a sassy clothing line, while also pushing her older cousin to turn her autobiography into a movie. Tracy, Vanessa and friends hit the road to launch the Flyy Girl brand and conduct nationwide Flyy girl movie casting calls, a coming-of-age trip that teaches Vanessa important lessons in life and business. Snappy dialogue and the inspirational plot make this a readable story, but the plot drifts along without a climax—except for the evening a 20-year-old Vanessa loses her virginity. Devotees of the Flyy Girl trilogy will enjoy this addendum. (July)

From Booklist
Since Flyy Girl was first published, in 1996, Tracy Ellison has matured from a 17-year-old Philadelphia boy-crazy teenager to a successful celebrity living large in superficial Hollywood. This new novel is told by Vanessa, Tracy's younger cousin. After an unfortunate incident between Vanessa and her mother, Vanessa goes to Los Angeles to spend the summer with her older cousin, Tracy. Vanessa has the same no-nonsense, in-your-face attitude that Tracy displayed in her youth. After making L.A. her home, Vanessa earns her cousin's trust and becomes Tracy's personal assistant and confidant. Vanessa is fanatical about branding the Flyy Girl name into an international marketing blitz. Her enthusiasm and commitment impress Tracy enough to give the idea a chance. Vanessa and four of her girlfriends accompany Tracy to Philly for a Flyy Girl casting call. The huge turnout energizes the group and convinces Vanessa that the project must move forward. Tracy confides some of her future plans, which only fuel Vanessa's drive and determination. Lillian Lewis

BORRRRRRRRIIINNNNNGGG!!!!
By Danielle Leigh
Boy! Was I disappointed!! This book deserves a negative number! How many times does the word "Flyy Girl" have to appear on one page? I was so innundated with the word that it gave me a migraine! I also despise when authors pump themselves up by reffering to themselves in their own book! How tacky!!! I struggled to get through this book, and NO! it was NOT an easy read! I kept picking it up and putting it down again trying to will myself to finish this tragedy! This is coming from someone who can finish a "GOOD" book in 5 hours. Don't get me wrong, I liked Mr. Tyree's other books but my gosh, man, u coulda done better than this! What? were the publishers hounding you to hurry up and finish a book? Does anyone want my copy? This book was all over the place.A whole lot of plugging and marketing ploys. The only thing i got from it was reminiscing about the ol' days when I grew up in Philly and how much I really miss cheesesteaks and hoagies!!

Mad I brought this book
By Elegant Beauty
I brought this book thinking that it was going to be as good as the first two but I was very very wrong. I'm sorry to say but this book boring. I had to force myself to read it. The only reason I read it was beacuse of a 6hr car ride and I had finished the other books I hade with me. I don't know what Omar was thinking with this one. He must be trying to get a movie deal, and then there is a web address[...]I think he was just trying to promote his clothing line and record label.

We Hold the Keys to Our Own Success
By A Customer
My husband gave me this book for Christmas and I read it with excitement, hope and a renewed feeling of joy for my Latina heritage.
Dr. Nogales looks into the traits we ALREADY possess, our strengths passed down to us from our grandmothers and mothers and shows us how they are useful survival skills. She gives wonderful examples of real world women who've used these innate skills to reach success in all walks of life.
What I particularly admire about Dr. Nogales' writing is that it is not elitist- it draws upon women's wisdom and shows the timeless wisdom we've all had access to from our female role models.
Whether you're rich or poor, educated or not, this book can reach you. It touched me and I recommend it to other women, Latinas or not.
I will use this book as a reference for my clients.

YOU GO GIRL! LATINA POWER!
By CHAKAKAN
The question of why we as Latinas do the things that we do in our very own unique way may be answered in this enlightening book. When I was growing up and I would question the "rules of the house", my abuelita always had the same answer for me "that is the way it always has been done" she used to tell me "and you are not going to change things...a si que, aguantate". Written by Ana Nogales, Ph.D. with Laura Golden Bellotti, Latina Power is not your typical self-help book; it is a book that encourages self-awareness. Latina Power expands on the cultural traits Latinas have naturally inherited from our varied indigenous cultures. The book also shows Latinas how they can use these traits to enrich their everyday lives.---Inspired, in California

Tarantula, by Bob Dylan

Music legend Bob Dylan's only work of fiction—a combination of stream of consciousness prose, lyrics, and poetry that gives fans insight into one of the most influential singer-songwriters of our time.

Written in 1966, Tarantula is a collection of poems and prose that evokes the turbulence of the times in which it was written, and gives a unique insight into Dylan's creative evolution. It captures Bob Dylan's preoccupations at a crucial juncture in his artistic development, showcasing the imagination of a folk poet laureate who was able to combine the humanity and compassion of his country roots with the playful surrealism of modern art. Angry, funny, and strange, the poems and prose in this collection reflect the concerns found in Dylan's most seminal music: a sense of protest, a verbal playfulness and spontaneity, and a belief in the artistic legitimacy of chronicling everyday life and eccentricity on the street.

it is what it is. like another reviewer said "only dylan can explain this" you can either read deep into his thoughts or think it is mostly rambling. it's really all in the reader's experience. the fact that we can even get a personal glimpse into his mind have this in our possession is great.

Essential for Dylan fans
By Bill R. Moore
Dylanophiles have long tired of (..) literary critics saying that Dylan is "not really a poet; this book does something to put the lie to the accusation. It IS poetry, though not in the "conventional" sense. The majority of the book is written in a style of prose poem/poem/prose poem (repeating the cycle for however long the poem is), and then closing the piece with a written letter signed by some character from Dylan's imagination. As you may have surmised, the prose poems are of the type that Dylan wrote for the linear notes to Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited. And yes, the poems are in the style of the poems that Dylan wrote for The Times They Are A-Changin' and Another Side. Precious little of it is literal; it is almost wholly written in the rambling, seeming stream-of-consciousness style that Dylan introduced in the aforementioned prose poems. He was highly into writing allegerical fables at that time, and this book abounds in them. Dylan fans will certainly enjoy this book a lot. It gives a peak into his creativity and writing process like nothing else really does. This is Dylan unpolished, not buried beneath the stream of re-writes that produced such masterpieces as "Visions of Johanna." There are references to many of his songs and lyrics within the poetry - whether this came from those, or vice versa, is anyone's guess, but it's a fascinating glimpse into Dylan in any case. You can get something out of these poems. They are fun to read, and have a quick, rolling meter and cadence that all of Dylan's poetic works seem to have, and this makes for interesting and thought-provoking seat-of-the-pants reading. Dylan fans will revel in it. Probably, those who are not already taken with the author will not be converted by this book. This book is actually a less-than-stellar book in the eyes of many (admittedly, by Dylan himself, who held off publishing it for 5 years), and, though interesting and thought-provoking, it is a very ornate and abstract work, without also offering the insights into life that his lyrics have always offered. So the merits of this book for those who are not already Dylan fans is questionable. On the other hand, it is certainly essential for Dylanophiles, and it certainly is a further contribution from Dylan to the field of poetry, and a more legitimate one in the eyes of many. Here's hoping that it helps Bob win the Nobel Prize for Literature that he so geniunely and truly deserves. It is not a cultural opinion, but indeed a fact, that Dylan did more for poetry than anyone else in the 20th century - at least in the sense of bringing it to the masses. And he certainly re-defined popular music as we know it. This book is a further gem in his canon, and helps show a small part of the reason for why Dylan means so much to so many different people.

Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? The Carter Family & Their Legacy in American Music, by Mark Zwonitzer, Charles Hirshberg

The first major biography of the Carter Family, the musical pioneers who almost single-handedly created the sounds and traditions that grew into modern folk, country, and bluegrass music.

Meticulously researched and lovingly written, it is a look at a world and a culture that, rather than passing, has continued to exist in the music that is the legacy of the Carters—songs that have shaped and influenced generations of artists who have followed them.

Brilliant in insight and execution, Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? is also an in-depth study of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter, and their bittersweet story of love and fulfillment, sadness and loss. The result is more than just a biography of a family; it is also a journey into another time, almost another world, and theirs is a story that resonates today and lives on in the timeless music they created.

From Publishers Weekly
The Carter Family, Virginia mountain musicians who composed, performed and recorded hundreds of folk songs beginning in 1927, finally get their due in documentary filmmaker Zwonitzer's comprehensive biography. To say that the Carters, who inspired such legends as Chet Atkins, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, had a profound impact on popular American music is an understatement. Zwonitzer follows the Carter family's history from the 1891 birth of A.P. Carter, the musical founder, up through the late 1970s, offering background on the social, economic and technological developments that spawned American folk, country and rock music. The Carter family got its official start when A.P. dragged his wife, Sara, and his pregnant sister-in-law Maybelle to Bristol, Tenn., to sing for a record company scout. The Carters' performance with A.P. singing bass, Sara and Maybelle singing harmony, and Maybelle on guitar earned them a recording contract and a legendary career that spanned three generations. Family and friends reminisce about the forbidden love affair that broke up the Original Carters; Hank Williams's attempt to shoot June Carter; how June and Maybelle Carter sustained June's husband, Johnny Cash, through his drug addiction; and other colorful episodes from the Carters' lives. Zwonitzer writes with flair, weaving anecdotes into a compelling study that will intrigue historians and music lovers alike.

From Library Journal
With an eye for biographical detail and just the right helping of the vernacular, documentary filmmaker Zwonitzer and Hirshberg, the author of biographies of Elvis Presley and the Beatles, tell the historically important and fascinating story of the Carter family and their music. From the original 1927 recordings of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter, through the 1940s and 1950s tours of "Mother" Maybelle and her daughters, to the marriage of June Carter and Johnny Cash, the history of this family of country musicians and their legacy unfolds through well-written prose. Highlights of the book include a chapter on the importance of the Original Carter Family's broadcasts on the titanic Mexico/U.S. border radio station XERA and the authors' material on the roots of some of the songs found, reworked, and newly composed by A.P. Carter songs that link modern country music to the traditional folk music of the 19th century. This is not, however, a thorough study of the individual songs themselves. Through the many anecdotes and quotations, garnered from interviews with surviving family members and from study of previously published material, the Carters and their associates come across as real people perhaps the book's greatest contribution. Highly recommended for all public libraries and for academic libraries with a focus on American vernacular music. James E. Perone, Mount Union Coll., Alliance, OH

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The Original Carter Family's 300-plus recordings, many of songs considered traditional and authorless, are the bedrock of country music. In arguably one of the best country-music books ever written, Zwonitzer (Hirshberg gathered facts, found informants, and goaded Zwonitzer into realizing the book) shows that Alvin Pleasant Carter (1891-1960) gathered old songs but habitually, and often genuinely, improved them. His wife Sara (1898-1979) and sister-in-law Maybelle (1909-78) did the same, less prolifically, and Maybelle created unique guitar and autoharp accompaniment styles that combined rhythmic and melodic lines. All three grew up remote from urban amenities in largely self-supporting families, but they weren't innocents. Pleasant craved recognition and drove the trio's career. Sara's haunting voice anchored their music for as long as her homebody reflexes allowed, but finally she left Pleasant for one of his younger cousins, with whom she settled in California. Maybelle became a trouper, brought her three daughters in when Sara and later Pleasant left the act, and finished as a revered country-music elder in son-in-law Johnny Cash's road show. The original trio members' contexts, Ralph Peer and the beginnings of the country-music industry, and the Carters' immense Depression-era success on megawatt "border radio" are just some of the byways Zwonitzer pursues as he stitches miles of oral-history testimony into friendly, informal, but never oafish prose. Magnificent. Ray Olson

A Book By Which Others Will Be Measured
By Foster Corbin
There is not a dull page in this 397 page account of The Carter Family. The writers manage to strike a happy medium between a scholarly treatise and a popular biography, something I find very appealing. In addition to being a biography of the Carters, the book also is a history of country music in the first half of the Twentieth Century roughly and a statement on rural Southern sociology of the time as well.
The book is full of information that I suspect is told for the first time as well as trivia many of us knew but had forgotten: For example, there was a time when soft drinks were called "dopes" in East Tennessee. I had forgotten that and that my aunt wore Blue Waltz perfume. (There is a funny account of Maybelle's breaking a bottle of this dreadful perfume she was using as a slide for her guitar in a recording session.) I laughed out loud to learn that Helen Carter, who could learn to play any instrument almost immediately, was having trouble with her first accordian. It took Pee Wee King's telling her she was playing the instrument upside down to get her on the right track. The Original Carter Family was the first group to let the women lead as opposed to being backup singers. The less than admirable Ralph Peer of the recording industry coined the term "hillbilly" for the kind of music Carters and other country Southerners played in the early part of the 20th Century. There is a good account of A. P.'s collecting mountain songs all over the South. That contribution alone would make him a giant in folk/country music. Finally we learn a great deal about both generations of this great family, from A. P., Sarah and Maybelle to "Mama" Maybelle and her daughters. I was pleased to learn, for example, that Maybelle was as good and kind a person as she always seemed to be. (She even sat with sick people for part-time employment at one point in her later life when country music was in an eclipse.) There is a poignant contrast between what apparently was the long and happy marriage of Maybelle and A. P. Carter's brother Eck and A. P. and Sarah's marriage that ended in divorce. Certainly there is nothing more heart wrenching than Sarah's dedicating a song over the radio (apparently in the presence of A. P.) to the man she married after her divorce. The song was "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes." Coy Bays, the intended recipient, heard the song all the way in California and came to Texas for his woman. In the many years that A. P. lived alone thereafter, he never stopped loving Sara. She was preceded in death by him. Both of them are buried, however, only two rows from each other (even though Sara died in California and had been divorced from A. P. for many years) in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Maces Springs, Virginia with identical tombstones. Above their names and dates in beautiful pink marble are perfectly round 78 records and the words "Keep on the Sunny Side."
This is a really fine book. Even folks not interested much in this sort of music should find it fascinating. It is the one by which later biographies of the Carters will be judged.

Clinch Mountain and beyond
By Jerome Clark
To all but a few of us -- that "few" being those who knew them personally -- A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter have always been little more than stoic, unsmiling, unreadable faces on the covers of Carter Family reissues. Mark Zwonitzer, assisted by Charles Hirshberg, manages to put breath and life into these three giants of country and folk music. Though they were ordinary people, they possessed an extraordinary gift, and it took them far from the shadow of their native home in Clinch Mountain, Virginia, and into the ears and hearts of people all over the world -- yet without ever revealing very much of anything about themselves.
In a number of ways, this is a sad story. Alvin Pleasant Carter emerges as something of a tragic figure. He is also by far the most interesting personality of the three, even if not possessed of the stunning musical talents of Sara and Maybelle. The book comes most to life, in my opinion, when A. P., without whom none of us would have heard of the Carter Family, is at its center.
As a purely human story, Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? -- the title comes from one of the family's most doleful songs -- will keep you reading far into the night. In focusing on the personal aspects, however, it foregoes the sort of deeper musical analysis some of us would like to have seen. It also lacks a discography, which one would have thought essential to a volume of this kind. Even so, this is a welcome, informative book which treats its subjects with an appealing warmth devoid of sentimental gloss.

Rags to Riches Chronicle of First Family of Country
By rodboomboom
Seamless tracing out of these people out of the hills of Virginia who till the end, didn't see themselves as any different from the rest, other than they liked to play and sing music, and people liked to listen.
For one such as I who never knew much about those behind the likes of June and Johnny, this was revealing. Strong characters of A.P. and Sarah and Eck and Maybelle, et al, form the nucleus of this formidiable foundational country/folk.
The ties with the likes of Atkins and Hank Williams and Elvis and Nitty Gritty, etc. are documented in such a unasuming and relaxed way that it seems as though you're there in their warm hospitality which they showed to all who came to Clinch Mountain.
The reader will surely take away fond stories, such as: Maybelle's panic to find instrument for June to play as approach Texas radio gig, writing chord changes on autoharp, June recalling Mom's admonition "You will learn to play the autoharp this week;" or Cowboy Slim borrowing Maybelle's guitar, only to lose it in a poker game; to dreaded Al Gore Sr.'s singing.
Appreciated spiritualness of the Carter's. Interesting point Zwonitzer makes on page 311: "Sam Phillip's boys--Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash--were raised on gospel and country music. .... But their hit songs were the yearnings of the flesh. In fact, by the mid-fifties, everybody seemed to be sings about the scratching the big itch, and Maybelle's more indirect and innocent songs of woodland cottages and myrtle, dewy roses and heavenly light, were starting to feel a little dusty."
Author is real wordsmith. Reading this book is like putting on that ole pair of bluejeans that feels so good and comfortable. Fine example of written documentary of seminal musical group to this country's rich musical lore.

Cosmopolis: A Novel, by Don DeLillo

Now a major motion picture directed by David Cronenberg and starring Robert Pattinson, Cosmopolis is the thirteenth novel by one of America’s most celebrated writers.

It is an April day in the year 2000 and an era is about to end. The booming times of market optimism—when the culture boiled with money and corporations seemed more vital and influential than governments— are poised to crash. Eric Packer, a billionaire asset manager at age twenty-eight, emerges from his penthouse triplex and settles into his lavishly customized white stretch limousine. Today he is a man with two missions: to pursue a cataclysmic bet against the yen and to get a haircut across town. Stalled in traffic by a presidential motorcade, a music idol’s funeral and a violent political demonstration, Eric receives a string of visitors—experts on security, technology, currency, finance and a few sexual partners—as the limo sputters toward an increasingly uncertain future.

Cosmopolis, Don DeLillo’s thirteenth novel, is both intimate and global, a vivid and moving account of the spectacular downfall of one man, and of an era.

From Publishers Weekly
For a book about a 28-year-old new-economy billionaire with a "frozen heart," Patton adopts a distant, machine-like narrative tone that has all the warmth of the computer HAL in Stanley Kubrick's 2001. It's a fitting approach, as the asset manager at the novel's center, Eric Packer, is hardly an avaricious tycoon, but rather an insular and literate egotist who seems more given to detached, philosophical reveries on everyday trivialities than to serious business analysis. That, too, fits, as this novel from DeLillo (Underworld; White Noise) takes place entirely in one day as Packer's life unravels while he's driven across Manhattan to get a haircut. He remains aloof both to listeners and to those around him, and Patton's understated reading imbues the proceedings with the subtle edginess of a mild drug. That's not to say that things are completely monotone, though; Patton also deftly portrays characters ranging from Packer's gruff, paranoid head of security to his aging Italian barber, one of the few characters who seem truly human. But the book is really an extended meditation, and while Patton's pitch may be perfect, the recording isn't for everyone.

From Library Journal
Unlike his sprawling masterpiece, Underworld, DeLillo's 13th novel is short and tightly focused, indeed almost claustrophobic. Most of the action takes place inside a "prousted" (cork-lined) stretch limo, as the reclusive financial wizard Eric Packer is chauffeured across Manhattan for a haircut. Thanks to a presidential visit, antiglobalization demonstrations, and a celebrity funeral, this journey takes up most of the day. Stuck in traffic, Packer anxiously monitors the value of the yen on the limo's computer. Using the car as his office, he summons advisors from nearby shops and restaurants. His physician gives him a rubber-gloved physical exam in the back seat as Packer discusses imminent financial ruin with his broker and angry crowds block the streets. This work most closely resembles The Body Artist in its brevity and straightforward narrative flow. However, the earlier novel was written in an uncharacteristically warm, poetic style, promising a new direction for this important writer, while Cosmopolis reverts to the standard DeLillo boilerplate, perceptive and funny but also brittle and cold. This, coupled with the book's dated 1990s sensibility, makes Cosmopolis a step backward rather than an artistic advance.

From Booklist
It's April in the year 2000 in the cosmopolis of New York. A day of epic gridlock due to a visit by the president and a violent antiglobalization protest. A good day to leave the white stretch limo at the curb, but assets manager Eric Packer, 28, buff, ruthless, and obscenely wealthy, insists on being driven across town to get a haircut. His chief of security objects: there's a credible threat against his life. But this only encourages Packer, who likes to rule his domain from his high-tech chariot, where his employees crawl in to make their reports, where myriad screens carry the ceaseless data stream of the currency markets, where a doctor performs his daily check-up. Quasi-mystic Packer is obsessed, on this fateful day, with the yen, strangely aroused by graphic coverage of the murders of other major financial players, and keenly aware that he has the power to pitch the entire monetary system into chaos. Packer is, in short, a monster--a man who has lost his soul in an accelerated world without heart. And DeLillo, master novelist and seer, tells the surreal, electrifying story of this dehumanized moneyman in English scrubbed so clean and assembled so exquisitely it seems like a new language. By turns breathtakingly poetic and devastatingly witty, his descriptions of today's urban reality--extravagantly kinetic Times Square financial displays (information as "pure spectacle") presided over by gigantic billboards of the "underwear gods"--make the present seem like a forbidding, to-be-avoided future. "We need a new theory of time," muses one of Packer's advisors. No, suggests DeLillo, we need to reclaim life. Donna Seaman

A fine book. A worthwhile read. I hated it!
By Linda Linguvic
I was reluctant to read this novel even though it was highly recommended. That's because five years ago I read and reviewed "Underworld", another of this author's novels, and while I thought that the writing was brilliant, his world view was very disturbing. But I was curious about Cosmopolis. And it was short, a mere 209 pages long, a book I knew I could easily read in one sitting. It took me more than one sitting to read however. It actually took me several weeks. That's because every time I put it down, I was reluctant to pick it up again. Perhaps that's because it rings so true and its blows fall so close to home. And, of course, the disturbing world view I had expected was there in all its glory.

The characters aren't real. They're not supposed to be. Everything in this book is larger than life. And everything has an exaggerated bitter sting to it. The setting is New York City and the geography is familiar. It's some time in the very near future, when big-moneyed corporate executives rule the world even more than they do now. Eric, a 28-year old billionaire is one of them. The storyline is about him setting out to get a haircut and all the action takes place in a single day.

Eric is in a white limousine which is equipped with every convenience the author could think of. He has several bodyguards too, and a market analyst who interprets data from world markets constantly. People visit him in his limo, including a doctor who gives him a daily physical. Eric also manages to have romantic encounters with three different women as well as his wife. He makes choices that have him lose his fortune in the stock market. His car is attacked by anarchists. He has to pause and watch a funeral for a rap musician. And he even gets involved in working as an extra in a strange and upsetting film. And, early on in the book, the reader knows Eric is hurtling towards real disaster.

But the book is more than this storyline of course. It is an indictment of the capitalist system that once held out such hope. It shows the shallowness of the people, making every single character seem like a little marionette on strings and the whole tale one big puppet show.

This is a fine book. It is a worthwhile read. I just can't help it though. I hated it.

Recommended only for literary buffs who relish discomfort.

Witty and incisive
By Barbara Klein
Don Delillo is the perferct author to try to understand the rise and collapse of the economic bubble as the century flipped into Y2K. He has penetrated a number America's peculiar cultural hysterias: environmental fears (White Noise); conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy (Libra); Moonies and mass marriages (Mao II), and now this latest mass hypnosis masquerading as economics. The objects of Delillo's scrutiny are cultural phenomena rather than human foibles. His characters become icons for certain events, metaphoric translations. They could not endure quotidian existence. They are not human, and this quality may repel some readers. Yet, there is satisfaction in the way Delillo gives articulate form to something the reader will have sensed, something recognized as familiar in recent experience.
Delillo also has a wonderful sensitivity for words. He makes some fun observations here about the argot of the Internet and high tech culture. I had not before recognized what a quaint anachronism "Automated Teller Machine" is. Delillo treats his readers to a number of such observations about our language. I believe that Don Delillo's "Underworld" was without rival the best fictional work about America in the twentieth century. This is a much narrower work, but it displays the wit and penetration that shines in Delillo's best works.

The Gardners proclaim this to be a "stand-alone interactive guide," but it will appeal most to fans of their Motley Fool Investment Guide (1996) or their just-released You Have More Than You Think: The Motley Fool Guide to Investing What You Have (1998). In their trademarked (literally!) Foolish style, these two brothers provide the charts, graphs, questionnaires, and pop quizzes necessary to help people assess their own financial status, set goals, and develop a plan and method to reach those goals. The Gardners help make investment principles clear and are very effective in reaching those who may be put off by more traditional financial planning guides. Although their advice is quite sound, they serve it up irreverently and make it clear that they do not take themselves too seriously. David Rouse

Go from a 'fool" to a "Fool"
By Brent Senske
I consider reading about investing about as dull a subject as I could imagine. This book has me looking for more. An absolute breeze to read and understand. I actually knew the answer to a question asked on TV's "Win Ben Steins Money" because of this book. Forget about winning money, after reading this you'll be excited about investing it!!

Great supplement to Investors Guide.
By T. Geoghegan
After reading TMF Investors Guide, I decided to give the workbook a try. It was worth the look. It guides you through all of the techniques described in the Investors Guide. With pencil and calculator in hand, I went through the entire workbook and now really have a clear picture of my own financial situation and how "foolish" investing will work for me. This book helps to clear up some of the hazy concepts that you might read about in other Motley Fool publications (ie. Foolish 4 and other Dow techniques). I say this is a great book to go through after reading the Motley Fool Investors Guide. It contains the same irreverent humor and lively writng and really reinforces everything the Gardners teach.
