The Emperor's Handbook: A New Translation of The Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius

In the tradition of The Art of Living and Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations—a practical book of timeless advice from one of the most powerful individuals in history—available for the first time in a highly accessible translation, including several unique features for contemporary readers and users of daily wisdom guides.

Essayist Matthew Arnold described the man who wrote these words as “the most beautiful figure in history.” Possibly so, but he was certainly more than that. Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire at its height, yet he remained untainted by the incalculable wealth and absolute power that had corrupted many of his predecessors. Marcus knew the secret of how to live the good life amid trying and often catastrophic circumstances, of how to find happiness and peace when surrounded by misery and turmoil, and of how to choose the harder right over the easier wrong without apparent regard for self-interest.

The historian Michael Grant praises Marcus’s book as “the best ever written by a major ruler,” and Josiah Bunting, superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute, calls it “the essential book on character, leadership, duty.” Never intended for publication, the Meditations contains the practical and inspiring wisdom by which this remarkable emperor lived the life not of a saintly recluse, but of a general, administrator, legislator, spouse, parent, and judge besieged on all sides.

The Emperor’s Handbook offers a vivid and fresh translation of this important piece of ancient literature. It brings Marcus’s words to life and shows his wisdom to be as relevant today as it was in the second century. This book belongs on the desk and in the briefcase of every business executive, political leader, and military officer. It speaks to the soul of anyone who has ever exercised authority or faced adversity or believed in a better day.

Review
Steve Forbes A must read for business leaders. This is a fantastic achievement.

Josiah Bunting II Superintendent, Virginia Military Institute Timeless, magnificent, simple: the essential book on character, leadership, duty. No translation does the Emperor's Meditations better or nobler justice.

Admiral Stansfield Turner Former Director of the CIA All of us today would do well to take counsel from Marcus Aurelius. His pithy aphorisms lay out a philosophy of individual responsibility that should be of great value to each of us, whether in leading fulfilling lives, managing corporations, or leading countries.

Kenneth L. Woodward author of The Book of Miracles David and Scot Hicks have endowed serious readers with a marvelous new translation of a text that still challenges any society that hopes to understand what it means to be civilized.

Donald Kagan Hillhouse Professor of History and Classics at Yale University The wisdom contained in this handbook has been admired through the ages. The Hicks brothers' excellently clear translation happily now makes it accessible.

Jacques Barzun author of From Dawn to Decadence The Meditations is a work I disliked for its flaccid piety and self-concern from the time I read it years ago. But a look for curiosity's sake into this new translation has led me to read it all with genuine pleasure. The philosophical observations are the same but the tone is manly and there is a subtle and agreeable variety as the subject changes from self to the world and to the gods.

Victor Davis Hanson Professor of Classics at California State University This new, accessible translation by Scot and David Hicks of the emperor's famous Stoic handbook reflects far better the flavor of Marcus Aurelius's own style. Americans should read Marcus -- and this new edition now makes it a joy.

A mediocre translation of a great book
By Wintertiger
This review is of the translation, not of the work (which I would rate 5 stars).

The translation in "The Emperor's Handbook" is probably more readable to a general audience than the much more accurate Loeb Classical Library translation, but the writing has been spun into soundbites. Marcus Aurelius did not write in soundbites. This results in a punchier work that is more accessible yet unfortunately shallower as well. The tone of a man writing for his own edification is turned into an almost preachy self-help book. Which is apparently what the publisher wanted, something to follow "The Book of Five Rings" and "The Art of War" as the latest book to help businessmen sound pseudo-intellectual and impress their non-reading fellow businessmen . . . and there are lots of readily-quotable soundbites separated out for easy use.

I am not being snarky. Read the intro and see who their target audience is. See what they are trying to accomplish.

Marcus Aurelius never would have named his work "The Emperor's Handbook," because he was not trying to teach people how to be emperor. He did not write in preachy soundbites.

Marcus Aurelius was a man trying to remind himself how to be a better person and live according to his stoic principles. This translation abandons that basic point.

Possibly the greatest leader in history right here!
By Whiskey Tango
This was my first foray into the works of the classic stoic authors and honestly I'm kind of ashamed to admit that my only real exposure to anything related to Marcus Aurelius before this was from the late great Richard Harris' portrayal of him in the movie Gladiator. That fact is a crying shame because this book is brilliant and should be read by every member of the human race. I honestly think if we put his words into the hands of our youth and made them memorize and live by these words that we would likely have world peace or at a minimum a much better and kinder world within the span of one generation (I believe the same of meditation). I've never had an author drive the point home so well that many of the anxieties we have in life are pointless and a complete waste of time to worry about. Out of all the great points he makes this one he reiterates quite a bit but it doesn't become boring or annoying, in fact quite the opposite. Each time he expresses this idea in a new and thoughtful way.

This book doesn't stop there though. You'll find Marcus' thoughts on courage, on being a good man, and most importantly on how to put this wisdom to action. The translators wisely state in their introduction that the main difference between Marcus and the saints and sages of old and new was that Marcus didn't live in a glass bubble. He didn't isolate himself in a monastery or close himself off from the world. Far from it. This man lived in a very complex and violent environment and he endured some of the most debilitating hardships a man can face (a horrible plague, insurrection, invasions, and even infidelity) and came through each one of them stronger and a better leader. What I like most about this book though is that he didn't write this book for me or anyone else. He didn't intend these words to be viewed by an audience. He wrote them so that he could govern his nation and most importantly himself to an even better degree. To me that means a lot. This wasn't a man trying to impress a crowd. He was just pouring his thoughts down which I believe shows his authenticity and nobility and that my friends is rare. In short this is an excellent book and I would highly recommend that it be read (and re-read) by all. Buy it!

Ancient wisdom
By Michael P. Maslanka
I recently became interested in ancient philosophy and read three translations of Aurelius. For someone just starting out, this is the best introduction. The intro essay is useful. Yes, the translation slips into one too many Hallmark moments, but overall the translation is concise and pointed and, well, more modern. Compare this translation with the Penguin Classic and you'll see what I mean. Here is the Penguin classic:"...both the longest lived and the earliest to die suffer the same loss. It is only the present moment of which either stands to be deprived:and if indeed this is all he has, he cannot lose what he does not have." A bit long winded. Here is the Hicks translation: "...the man who dies young loses not a jot more time than the man who dies old. A man can only be deprived of the present monent, for this is all he has, and how can a man lose what he doesn't possess?" And, Aurelius strikes me as someone who would not write or speak in the more mannered and formal Penguin classic way but instead as someone who cuts clearly to the nub. Get both books, but start with this one.
