This extraordinary collection offers an unsurpassed chronicle of human endurance, resourcefulness, courage, and luck -- in the most perilous circumstances and against the greatest odds. From the depths of the oceans to the highest mountaintops, on every continent, and even in outer space, here are more than twenty riveting stories by explorers, mountaineers, sailors, pioneers, adventurers, and ordinary people who faced mortal peril...and lived to tell about it.
Fiction cannot rival these true accounts, all of which have been selected for the quality of their writing as well as for their inherent drama. Ranging from the time of the conquistadors to the present day, the pieces are almost all written by eyewitnesses and participants -- including John McCain, who endured agonizing torture in a North Vietnamese POW prison; James Lovell, who commanded Apollo 13 during its harrowing return from an aborted lunar mission; and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who cheated death after crashing his plane in the Libyan desert.
Skillfully edited by John Letterman, whose introductions to each piece provide background and historical context, these memorable stories allow us to experience firsthand the determination and courage of men and women whose lives are on the line. We are transported to Antarctica, where blinding winds and horrific cold torment Ernest Shackleton's men; to the scorching deserts of Arabia, where Wilfred Thesiger is engulfed by sandstorms and punishing heat; to the South Pacific, where the surviving crewmen of the Essex begin an epic 2,000-mile longboat voyage after their ship is rammed and sunk by a whale.
At times inspiring, at times horrifying, and always riveting, this book vividly chronicles the fortitude of a remarkable group of men and women who have written powerfully about the struggle to survive in the face of tremendous adversity.

From Publishers Weekly
True stories dealing with "human courage and perseverance in the face of mortal danger" have enthralled readers for generations, and this volume attempts to bring together some of the "most exciting, moving, and inspiring pieces ever written" on the subject, from the years 1528 to 1973. Letterman, who has worked as a literary agent, editor, translator and bookseller, does succeed, as this is a comprehensive anthology containing some of the best-known writings on adventure. There are sections from Antoine de Saint Exupéry's Wind, Sand and Stars; passages from first mate Owen Chase's journal of the demise of the whale ship Essex; and selections from James A. Lovell's account of his Apollo 13 flight. Although most of the entries (a good number of which are excerpted from much longer works) do deliver drama, not hearing the entire story may leave some readers feeling unmoved. Nonetheless, it's a stirring collection that could inspire inquisitive minds to seek out full texts. Maps.

From Booklist
Ever since Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm kick-started the genre, publishers have been releasing true-life adventure stories as fast as humanly possible. Many of them are tepid, barely interesting books clearly issued to capitalize on a publishing trend. Thankfully, this is not one of those. Going as far back as 1528--the year of a particularly disastrous sea voyage between Spain and the Americas--the book offers 23 stories of survival, all but two of them told by the people who were there. Thus, a former inmate at Colditz, the notorious World War II prison, recounts his escape; astronaut James Lovell describes what it was like aboard the crippled Apollo XIII; and explorer Ernest Shackleton recounts his ill-fated 1914-17 expedition to the South Pole. Obviously, the book draws on previously published material, but that's fine: locating some of this material on our own would require an expedition of a different sort. Letterman has done the hard part, and we enjoy the benefits: an assortment of death-defying, awe-inspiring tales, all under one roof. David Pitt

In their own words....

...and that's part of the problem. I thought this book was "Ok" as indicated in my rating but I found many of the stories, especially the earlier ones which begin in the 16th century a bit hard to get into. Possibly because the flow of the language was something I wasn't use to and didn't particularly care for. It also made me a bit nuts that these poor people, after suffering all kinds of torments and travails would praise God because it could have been worse! Talk about seeing the glass half full. The tales that I did like I found too short. Ok, it's a compilation and I understand the limitations but I have pretty much decided that I'd rather read a longer more detailed true adventure story (written in the third person perhaps)than a collection of "Reader's Digest" versions. All that being said if you are not familiar with for example the experiences of the Andes survivors or the crew of the whale ship Essex this book is a good introduction and will undoubtably whet your appetite for "the rest of the story."
