Mirror Lake: A Novel, by Thomas Christophe Greene

Mirror Lake brilliantly explores life, death, love, and loss against the backdrop of rural Vermont and the drama of its seasons.

Nathan Carter, a man in his twenties, moves from Boston to Eden, Vermont, following the death of his father and the end of yet another failed romance. When Carter's Jeep goes off the road in a snowstorm, seventy-nine-year-old Wallace Fiske nurses him back to health and the two become unlikely friends.

Wallace begins to tell Nathan his story, a love story he was prepared to take to the grave with him. It is a tale of passion, of obsession, and ultimately, of tragedy. Along the way, Nathan, suspecting that Wallace is not telling him the whole truth, sets out to discover for himself what happened here at the edge of this small mountain lake fifty years before.

In the process, Nathan not only discovers Wallace's dark secret, but also finds himself transformed by the experience, leading to an unforgettable conclusion.

The novel unfolds between each man's present and past, and reveals the loves and passions that have defined their lives.

Mirror Lake is a brilliant and suspenseful first novel about love, marriage, friendship, and betrayal.

From Publishers Weekly
Greene tells a predictable story of infidelity, love, loss and male bonding in this well-crafted but somewhat stale first novel. Nathan Carter is the 30-something protagonist who finds himself emotionally bereft after the death of his father, so much so that he drives north from Boston to Vermont and ends up starting a new life as a rural mailman. After a weather-related accident on his delivery route, Carter befriends 79-year-old widower Wallace Fiske, who helps Carter sort out his troubled love life while slowly revealing the story of his marriage to a woman named Nora. The farmer describes the pivotal crisis in his marriage, when a farmhand became attracted to his wife, a fierce attachment that led inexorably to violence. Greene is a reasonably engaging storyteller; the relationship between the two men develops in intimate, minimalist scenes that capture the flavor of smalltown life. The female characters aren't as well developed as their male counterparts, however, and on the whole readers may feel that Greene paints his characters in familiar, bland strokes: "We were each running from something. I was running from my father's death and from the shallowness of a life incomplete without shiny, new love. Wallace was running from something far more profound: a past that haunted him, a past he could not escape, and a story he had never told to anyone."

From Booklist
His father's death propels Nathan Carter from Boston to Eden, Vermont, where he takes a job as a postal worker. One of the stops on his route is the Fiske place, home of cranky loner Wallace, and for months the two are caught in a cat-and-mouse game of delivering and refusing to receive the mail. A snowstorm finally throws them together, a friendship develops, and Nathan finds himself on the receiving end of Wallace's oral autobiography--in particular, his marriage to Nora. Meanwhile, commitment-phobic Nathan meets Kate, the daughter of the bartender at the local pub. As their relationship deepens, Nathan learns more of Wallace's story, which has all the ingredients of an elemental rural tragedy--farmer's wife, hired hand, vengeful husband. Greene's first novel suffers from credibility gaps inherent in the story-within-a-story form--do we really believe a cantankerous recluse like Wallace would confide in Nathan this way? But the assured prose and strong sense of place help make up for any lapses in plot. Mary Ellen Quinn

Review
Bret Lott author of Jewel Mirror Lake is a taut psychological drama that carried me through from first page to last. Mr. Greene's is a bright new voice in American literature, a voice that can render exquisitely the sharpest truths of the human heart and the finest details of a passing landscape all at once. May many more books follow Mirror Lake! -- Review

Youngish man befriends older sad reclusive elderly mean

Unusual story. Youngish man befriends older sad reclusive elderly mean. They both add to the other's maturing and thoughtfulness. I listened to this on CD. Was not terribly fond of the reader but the story kept my interest. If possible, I would have given 3 1/2 stars.

A finely crafted, beautiful and moving novel.
By A. Lehmann
Mirror Lake is an exceptional novel. The two main characters are incredibly "human", the conflicts compelling. Greene's descriptions of the Vermont countryside convey the ruggedness and beauty of that landscape as effectively as any I have read. The frequent juxtaposition of descriptions of the foreboding and flawed yet wondrous natural setting perfectly serves to emphasize the development of character and plot in a way that is both moving and natural. Greene's characters, exceptional pacing and melancholy voice captured me, both in terms of emotional impact and taut story telling, as few novels have. I plan to revisit "Mirror Lake" in the near future. A fine achievement. Highly recommended.

the mystery of the lake
By A Customer
I sat in my back yard and read and read and read. I had to put it down to prepare dinner or I would have been there throughout the night! I LOVED this book! I particulary enjoyed the character of Nathan who told the story. He is a young man who befreinds a difficult seventy year old man who holds a secret. I could not let go until I discovered that secret.
I found the descriptions of the scenery in Vermont, whether it be the trees, mud season, snow covered mountains, rushing rivers or whatever. fascinating. I I have never been to Vermont but am already planning a trip based on what I have read. The title "Mirror Lake" is appropriate because it plays a large part in the story. If there is an actual Mirror Lake, I would like to find it. I intentionally seek out first time authors and this book is one of the best in that category that I have read. It reads with clarity which I do not come across often. I can visualize the characters and can certainly see it as a film and hope that that will be the case. There is something for every reader: love, mystery, beautiful scenery, characters you can believe in. I am looking forward to re-reading it - I found myself cheating by skimming through it in order to find answers!
